That was my exact response as well. As a 52 y/o man...I really didn't want to think of her as anything more than another manufactured teen idol. But, as an Artist I cannot deny true Art or Talent...and the two of them, as a pair, are freaking amazing! My only response was "Wow." That's all I could say. Wow. So delighted to finally see real unique talent being expressed after such a drought. Hope she lives long and is surrounded by stable, loving people.
I wish I could get my 54 y/o dad to love her like I do lol he has insane music taste ranging from Kylie Minogue - The Cure - The Offspring - Skrillex - Rammstein but he won't REALLY listen to her. I'm not quite sure why but one day I'll get him 😂
I think she's wonderful. Most of the vocal coach reactors have said that she's great. There are some people who don't get it and say that she is always breath or whispers all the time. I think it's more complicated than that.
I hate how everyone tries to say she only mumbles. My mother is famous for never being able to hear lyrics in songs and she hears every word Billie sings.
@@cherrybomb1386 Everyone has it own opinion and taste. Do not hate.... try also some other singers like Aurora (Billie love her) or Angelina Jordan. You will see more advanced & talented girls, but without big music industry support.
i was trying to explain her voice to my sister earlier today, and the best comparison i could come up with was “she reminds me of young Judy Garland, or one of those singers I haven’t heard outside of the jazz age of the 20s and 30s.” her voice is haunting, ethereal, and just so very special 💜
What I love about her is her honest portrait of what a performance artist is. I have 50+ years on earth and I am honestly touched with tears and laughter and awe in the music she performs with her brother. She is honest and sincere in her emotions and character. Can’t ask more from her, and we shouldn’t.
Wow this reaction actually made me tear up, that never happens 😭 I think you really hit the nail on the head, she is such a mature and emotional singer, so subtle and controlled. The fact that you recognise and analyse the difficulty and details of the technical aspects of her singing made me really happy, because it’s such a logical, analytical and educated confirmation of how good she is, while also not being totally devoid of being affected by her performance and stylistic choices. Thank you for this. I hope you react to more Billie Eilish live, for example “End of the World” (bbc radio one) or “Bad” or “Bellyache” on Like a version. Her singing on Howard Stern I think you’d also really enjoy. That’d be my recommendations for you! There’s more of course...
I typically hate when people react to artists and have avoided almost all of them even when people throw them at me. It almost every single time feels, somewhat obviously, that the reactor is going for more than to display their genuine opinion, hoping instead to react "dramatically" and play on people's emotions. In the end, if I've seen one, it usually leaves me with one bad comparison I wish I'd never allowed into my head. Anyway, I think I could tell just from the thumbnail you seemed actually knowledgeable and genuine. I'm glad I walked in. The problem is that most people just don't actually know what they're talking about, and it never works unless someone does. You do, I can see that, and I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. Not only did I take away quite a bit of knowledge from what you had to say, but for the things I thought I knew already, it was a relief to hear a real coach--hearing a real coach discuss the voice by addressing the nuance and emphasis we ought more commonly put on communication rather than masterful mimicry is something I see far too infrequently. I'm just delighted that you're here doing this for the world. It's definitely one of the things it needs, given there's plenty it could absolutely do without. Thanks for doing what you do.
It's nice to have a vocal instructor react who appreciates the subtle nuances of Billie's style. There is not a breath sound, pause, or broken note that is not intentional. Billie analyses her performances in the studio and will re-record a single phrase hundreds of times until she is comfortable with the sound. Her brother Finneas is both a great producer, accompanist, and vocalist who has a career of his own. Tough to beat "blood harmony".
I.m old enough to have seen the most of the great artists and Billie is maybe the best artist yet. She draws you in and if your watching her sing you forget to breathe...captivating...she could be Oscar winning actress!
What a lovely analysis of Billie and Finneas! Her singing is so old soul, yet when you hear her interviewed she is clearly a teenager, poised teenager but so young.
Not sure why I'm still surprised Billie's life performance is this crisp. Love the explanation of the breathy soft voice. Her new song 'no time to die' has amazing build up where she plays with her range.
You caught a lot on a first listen. Yeah, her brother Finneas (on keyboards) is spectacular with her. He does this all the time. He harmonizes in a completely self-less way, to the point that the effect is often more that she just has a richer sounding voice than someone is singing with her, or even that it is a processing effect. This song doesn't really show it, but she clearly is also a master of microtonality. "You Should See Me in a Crown" is a good example. I would recommend their piano cover of "The End of the World" on BBC1. She explores a little more of her dynamic range and Finneas does some of his best (sub) harmonizing of this type. And it's such an emotionally charged performance it's hard not to burst into tears listening to it. (and damn those lyrics of the final verse). Now I'm off to see if you've done any of her other tunes.
The studio version of this with video was my introduction to Billie Eilish and I immediately began searching for more. I am nearly 60 years old and Billie is the only artist that has created a body of work that I love without exception. She is truly amazing.

billie’s voice is so beautiful, she’s definitely one of my favorites. i recommend listening to her other live performances! she’s always brilliant. i would also love to see you react to harry styles best live vocals :)
I'd love another reaction to Billie Eilish. If you want live vocals, try her Copycat live performance, it's a different style compared to When the Party's Over, but she sings it effortlessly.
I'm exited for you to listen to her other stuff. It's all so damn good. I'm an old school music lover and finally the second coming of a great artist is here in my opinion.
That is her brother, Phinnius. She has written and produced every song in collaboration with him. They are amazing together. Its like 2 halves that make up a whole. She does not perform without him. They are really close.
Her brother is on the keys. He’s producing all songs with her. Probably 70% of a song is his say and work, but they are pushing each other for sure. He’s just such an amazing producer while he is just 22. The 2 produced and just published the new Score for the next „James Bond“ movie. Pretty amazing what they both are achieving in such a short time
Nice reaction. I find the subtlety with which she and Finneas approach both their songwriting and their performances one of their most attractive qualities.
Finneas is indeed her brother, best friend and her salvation. Billie was born into musical family. Her and her brother were home schooled. Thank you for giving him credit for the genius and compassionate soul he is. Wonderful review and explanation. Thank you so much!
I would be very interested in seeing u react to the actual video to this song. Also can u react to her Howard Stern performance and her live cover to Michael Jackson’s Bad?
Super informative reaction! You should watch her 2020 Grammy performance now! Her voice has grown so much just since this video. I think you'll enjoy watching them back to back!
I think part of the reason she understands the nitty gritty fundamentals of singing is because she was in a choir as was her brother. He was actually the reason she joined because she wanted to do what he was doing. I think teaching the fundamentals to any singer especially young people is a great thing because they aren't just for lack of a better phrase, "Britney Spears-ing it". They are learning techniques to really make their voice stand out and really use their voice as an instrument. With the different octaves she can sing even with just the piano and Finneas singing, it really shows her depth and talent. I'm no expert but you can only teach someone so much about vocal ability and the rest is raw talent. You have to have a finely tuned instrument and take care of it in order to properly use it. I think in terms of making you feel emotion and expressing it, she reminds me of Janis Joplin. Janis could sing the blues so bad (good) that she made you feel like you had the blues whether you really did or not.
Ariana's new live album is something you HAVE to listen and react to! God is a Woman and Breathing' are insane, but the whole album will blow your mind.
PK Blondie maybe if u knew that she used to fake her tone to sound chesty... that’s why she sounds really throaty in her oldest videos. also her current voice is light and beautiful (in my opinion)
PK Blondie where did i say fake a chest voice? 🤣 don’t misquote me. she used to lower her larynx and force her mix to be more “chesty” which isn’t very healthy vocally. her natural voice is light and slightly nasal. regarding your complains about her slurring her words: it’s her singing style just like other mainstream artists.
Really enjoying your reactions and technical comments on these videos. Very informative and interesting. May I suggest you react to Angelina Jordan? Besides doing a unique and amazing interpretation of Bohemian Rhapsody (recently on America's got talent, the champions), she has a wealth of songs to choose from, mostly covers, but also a couple of very good original songs. Thank you for the comments on Billie Eilish. I've just started listening to her and I really enjoy her delicate voice. It's like little musical "touches" up and down the scale, just at the right moment when it makes emotional sense. It's nice to know that as a voice teacher, you value communication and connection over perfection and high notes/belting (too much of that, these days). Moving on to some of your other reactions (thanks for picking a variety of people from around the world: I'm discovering people I had never heard.)
Dear John, I love your videos of analysis even though I am not musical at all and I can't sing at all :). I do not hear all the nuances but this is still very interesting to my when is made by you. Thank you. I would love to watch episode with Jessie J.
Such a wonderful, thoughtful, informative analysis. Love it, would love to here your take on some of her other live pieces, like the acoustic version of Bellyache or her cover of Bad by Michael Jackson that she did for Like A Version. Excellent stuff!
