Great video! My undefeated #1 is the freedom! You get to do whatever you want. #2 is the diversity of stuff you do and come across. Everyday brings something new (at least research wise)

Thank you professor Rillig for sharing your reasons.
I like learning new stuff, especially those intruding into my field from other fields. I also like teaching students coz it makes me feel that I am preparing a new generation of people who will serve their community in a better way.

What I love about academia are conferences and workshops - as they bring together all the aspects you mentioned (plus one gets to travel to cool places). Also: Great video and overall a really nice channel, I truly enjoy your helpful and uplifting content here and over at TikTok!

Thanks a lot for publishing those videos about academic life. The average video out here about academia is so depressing!

Personally I would also add the possibility of working on multiple stuffs (I think you called it smart multitasking once). When you kind of get stucked in a project, you have almost always another project where you can put your hands and work

There's nothing not to like about academia for free and curious minds, that is if you can get a position to begin with

I'm just an undergrad student who was dreaming of working in big companies like Pepsi, L'oreal etc but now in last year my mind is totally changed, whenever I see people who work in corporates complaining about bosses, overtime etc I always think "Why to stress yourself when you have different options, life is too short to be stressed"!
Becoming a lecturer is so fun and way better than working in a 9-5 corporate office where everyone is snake.

Both the corporate world and academia have their issues. All the best for your journey....

Yes I agree, but still I think academia has way better work life balance than corporate. Thanks!

The opportunity to travel and meet different and interesting people is one of the big reasons that I want to become a professor
