    My postdoctoral interview was rather short. I asked and his response: ‘I only fund foreign postdocs. If you want to join the lab do some research and put together a two to three page proposal for an individual postdoctoral grant along with you CV and a short summary of your thesis research’. A week later my hear my advisor given a reference over the phone and 10 minutes later about setting up time to start flushing out a grant. I learned a lot about how to think about science and why it is a good idea to have a firm understanding of the concepts of evolutionary biology.

      @@mrillig Thank you. Just a suggestion. There are many many videos on teaching candidates how to do well in interview, yet we literally know nothing about the ways of working, the thinking process and decision making by the interview panel in the whole application process. Could you please demystify that "behind-the-scene" part for us all? It'd be much more interesting and helpful to let people know the other side of the story so that we can penetrate into this black box and adjust ourselves more accurately with this unknown but important perspective. For example, I suspect (and based on numerous experiences) many people in the selection committee, despite their higher rank, do NOT read the applicants' application pack before coming to the interview so they arrived with an empty mind or unprepared. Some of them did not pay attention to the candidate's presentation but ask stupid questions in the interview that comes after (not clarifying questions, but asking exactly what the presentation has already covered) etc. etc. Problems like this are many and common, and I suspect it's not limited to particular universities or countries. What do you think?

    Thank you for the video! Can I ask a follow-up question for the part you discussed at the end of your video - the gray area? I interviewed for an AP position in the US. At the end of the interview, they ask me to provide an equipment list. I was reserved because of the reason you mentioned - I don't want to act against my application for being an expensive hiring. I asked if this was an offer. They were like we need to know first and reach an agreement before we can make you an offer. But once we make you an offer, we know it is going to work for both sides. I also need a spouse hiring, which is in addition to the equipment list. What would you suggest to do in this case? Many thanks again!

    • @mrillig
      @mrillig Месяц назад

      For many positions it is pretty standard that the search committee wants to know what you would need to be successful, and this comes up during the interview. A detailed list comes typically later, depending on the country and institution. But during the interview you should know what bigger equipment you will need to have or have access to, for example. And in order to have a good answer it is good to inquire what the general range is for offers. During the interview nobody makes an offer, this happens afterwards, when the committee has had a chance to discuss all applicants, and in many cases once the list of candidates has moved through several other layers of admin (like in Germany). Spousal hire I would firmly place in the negotiation phase, since this is family matters and they have no business to come up during the interview.

I got my PhD 10 years ago, and I believe I don't have a chance in countries like Germany, as most calls I see are for up to 4 years after PhD. Do you know if this is really true? Do you think there are opportunities for mid career researchers looking to relocate? Thank you very much in advance!

      Thanks! So, I was 10 years after my PhD before I returned to Germany for an academic position (of course I am German, so it is a different situation). I don't think the time since PhD is the most important issue for all jobs. But this differs from country to country and from position to position, and between funding calls, as some wish to support more junior people.Good luck!

    Thank you very much. Very important topic and tips. I started watching your videos as a PhD student and used your tips while looking for a position, getting prepared for an interview, at the beginning of my academic position, trying to extend my own network and to create my own research group. Just want to mention that the effort you are given to create this content means a lot to us.

    Amazing as always. Although not directly relevant to me at the moment but there is always a home take message from your talk. I liked at the end about temptation.looking onto others underestimating and overestimating the credentials of selected fellows...😊

    Am I qualified for a position as group leader, assistant professor or similar? This is a frequently asked question, and an important one. Here I share some thoughts on this. Please let me know if I forgot something!

    I am wondering whether these tips are more applicable to fields of experimental research (because you refer to labs), but some general advices I think are also helpful for other research groups (without real labs), with the difference that you don't depend so much on financial resources to buy equipments, materials and so on.

      Absolutely. This is true. As you write, I also think most points will still apply.
