I can’t tell you how much joy I get out of watching Simon, with his wealth of knowledge and craftsmanship ,sharing it with Yannis. Yannis is a delightful and hardworking young man willing to learn whatever is put before him. Bravo to two wonderful human beings.
I love the music BUT I prefer hearing the true activity whether it’s silence or banter between the workers. It makes us feel we are actually there observing on site. I just love Simon’s explanations and hearing Yanis occasionally.
It's hard to believe the kinship you feel for people you've never met...what a dynamic duo in Simon and Yannis. Can't help but smile in the way those gentlemen connect.
@@aiglonducal314 Well, he told us his reasoning. It didn't match the rest of the kitchen, which was important to him, and he plans on putting in more cabinets and needed counter space! He also explained that if he replaced the doors to match the rest of the kitchen, they would be as large as the doors leading in and out of the kitchen, making it look like another exit. His reasoning made perfect sense. The old (rather cheap) built-in will still be there, and they were considerate enough to stash the doors in there (along with the spirits and cup) for anyone in the future who finds it. Wait for him to finish the room, and I think you will agree it was a good move. 😊
It would be good if it was possible to open it from the other side of the wall to recover the space and make a nice place for storage or display purposes. Assuming of course that its not a load bearing wall.
Well done Billy it does look far better without the ugly doors. With the dresser I take it you mean a Welsh dresser not like our friends across the pond with a chest of drawers? A good excuse for more Brocanting
As a Southern girl, I am delighted that you chose so well the gift left for the future! And kudos to Duncan for so patiently taking apart what he just recently completed. The kitchen gets more amazing each week. Billy, you are setting a very high standard for the rest of the building!
Billy, for North Americans (Canadian and Americans) a dresser is a chest of drawers that holds clothes. A buffet is the type of furniture that comes in 2 pieces: a bottom that has cupboards with doors (either glass or wood) containing saucers, serving plates and dinner plates. The top is often detachable that is usually either glassed doors, open shelves or covered doors - this piece is often half the depth of the bottom. Most of the time, the shelving top part is identified as a "hutch" or "buffet hutch". On the shelves there is a dado indentation near the front of the shelf so that you can sit a dinner, saucer or salad plate in it and lay the back top of the plate against the back of the hutch. On these hutch shelves, many people display their fine bone china, lead crystal glasses or family mementos. Hope this clears up the confusion.
How wonderful to see the growth in Yannis, both his confidence and skills have developed so much. It is also great to see how comfortable he now feels with the camera, I enjoy his intros and impromptu fun that he has with Alex.
It's lovely seeing yanis and Simon working together again, I have never seen a plasterer as good as Simon is, and yanis is such a hardworking young lad, he has a wealth of teachers in you all ❤
Billy, in United States, a dresser is a piece of bedroom furniture that holds clothes. In a dining room we had a buffet cabinet. I believe in the olden days they were referred to as sideboards. My Mom called ours the Hutch. It held her good china dishes. Our Hutch was located in our kitchen. Just a tidbit of information from my family growing up in the USA. Everything looks so beautiful. Joyce❤️🙏🇺🇸
I’m from England and a dresser is what I know is a ‘Welsh dresser’ very fashionable again in the 80’s , don’t quote me but it would have cupboards below and a area above to display your best china i.e a plate rack & cup hooks under the shelves ❤
@@paulakershaw5452 Hi Paula, great information from history. Maybe that’s were Americans’ learned the term dresser. Could of been brought over from the Welsh and or English newly arriving in America , back in the day. Nice hearing from you. Joyce🌹
In Canada a dresser is a chest of drawers in the bedroom for holding clothes such as socks, TShirts, underwear (tighty whiteys) and other bits and bobs. In a kitchen or dining room we call them buffets with a hutch on top or side boards. I imagine you will find a stunning piece to display/store dishes etc. Thanks for another great daily, on all levels. Crack on!🙏❤️
Exactly. The only thing I'll add is that a buffet is generally wider (the width of a triple dresser) and a sideboard is generally about 1.5 times the width of a single dresser.
Still fun that you checked it out, Simon and Yanis. Great teamwork on the kitchen, as always! Getting so close!!! Enjoyed the secret stash for future builders. lol
I’m glad the kitchen cupboard has been plaster boarded over. The height of it made the door to the kitchen look too low. Nice touch with the gift for the future. What a great team, I know it’s not a mistake, Billy attracts good people. Big love to you all ❤
Just for fun-your Jack Daniels is made in a “dry county”😊 in Tennessee, USA, so you can tour the plant-but no free tasting allowed. Still a fascinating tour if you are ever in the area.
I have been there several times. The tour used to be FREE! Every time we went, they took a photo of our group and mailed it to us. Twice they gave us a nice gift when we left. One was a wood cut print and another was a big bottle of JD spring water.
This channel is just such fun to watch. There is always a new project, a trip to the DIY store, finding a treasure, redoing the wires, walking in the garden, taking the junk to the tip putting on the Osmo or whatever each day brings it is a joy to watch. Alex catches it all for us to watch. It will be so sad to have Simon leave again. He & Yanis seem to be a great twosome. I was thinking that booze should be well aged if & when it is ever found😂!
The way you added the clear coat to the windowsills was absolutely perfect. By coating both sides (and the endgrain) you can reduce warping as well as rot. I have seen so many warped windowsills because they were installed untreated and were only painted/coated on the top afterwards. This is especially important in a building that has big temperature swings.
Simon is seriously the best teacher! I learn so much about rennos from watching these and other renovation channels but he really takes it to the next level with his explanations. Love the roof rack trick for the longer plasterboards. Simon seriously needs his own channel!
I love it how that you have taken one of the worst, most abandoned spaces in the convent, and have turned it into a light bright and wonderful space! The nuns would have been so impressed with what you have done with this kitchen!
❤ Loved the music intro Alex. This kind of Irish romantic fresh violin sounds. Excellent. Good to see the dynamic duo, Simon and Yannis doing great work. Crack on boys!!!🎉🎉🎉
You put your heart and soul into the kitchen and still again repeating in library and sanctuary...obviously you are contagious in a good way Billy; so brilliant ...and obviously inspiring your team. Like others, I am just grateful to be getting a little dronette view of it all. thank you.
Smooth as Tennessee Whiskey 🎶 Just love your choice. Billy, changing your mind, nothing wrong with this.... Best to do it the way you want, then look at it with regrets. You are a perfectionist, it can be a cross to bear... The kitchen is a masterpiece, and you had a vision and it's come to fruition 💖
In the states the piece you’re referring to as a “dresser” we usually call a “breakfront” or a “buffet cabinet”. “Dresser” in the U.S. usually refers to a piece of bedroom furniture, usually with a mirror on top. Have been with you from the start and love your content!
Yes I was going to say I understood what Billy was talking about. But in the US , a dresser is bedroom pice of furniture. I love this channel. It fun and interesting. I love all the hard working people. The kitchen is a masterpiece. It's beautiful great work Billy. You whole family is talented. God Bless you, your family, and all your hard workers ..
I would call it a buffet or sideboard. A breakfront usually has a glass display hutch on top, and the center section projects out further into the room than the sides do; hence the name.
I love your sense of history in the making with your hidden bottle of Jack Daniels! Super idea. When my mother, Pearl, was at the funeral home, I brought in a string of pearls for them to put on her before closing her casket. I told them that this was for the future archaeologists to find. My brother slipped one of Dad's favorite beers into his casket. These are small things, but they give us a feeling that there WILL be a future and we are part of it. I should like to add how much I enjoy the music you have chosen. Crack on.
I wish I could be around for whenever someone in the future finds your gift. Every time I see the kitchen, it still warms my heart to see how beautiful it is, considering what it looked like when you guys started.
Well done Gentlemen, the cupboard is covered with a secret surprise, windows are caulked and sealed, more of the wood is being Osmos, and then discovered they put bags of cement in the ceiling lol. Who would have known? Very ingenious for the nuns. lol Have a wonderful day
You are correct Billy - they are called dressers and often called Welsh Dressers. Lovely episode as always. Please get everyone to sign and date the new beam when it goes in. ❤️
Looks so much crisper and cleaner line on the wall with the cupboard gone! Well done Billy for your foresight. Simon and Yanis made great progress on it. The surprise behind the wall will be a wonderful find for someone. ❤😊
Simon, you explained it perfectly. Anyone who's seen a sheet of plasterboard, and if you watch this channel, you've seen plenty, will understand that it needs to be kept flat and that the roof rack channels only being a meter apart doesn't work. Yes, I think the word is 'dresser'. I remember years ago watching what was called 'Good Neighbors' in the US, can't remember the British name. Tom and Barbara (Felicity Kendall) Good as the main couple, with Penelope Keith & Paul Eddington s neighbors. The 1st time I saw a dresser was on the set of that show and I was so envious. I'm sure I'll be envious of the one you find.
Those bags in the ceiling are beyond strange and yes, I watch murder shows. However, it is possible something precious is hidden inside the concrete, perhaps some of the missing treasure/artifacts. I would simply have to know. :)
Here in the USA we call a furniture piece used in a kitchen or dinning room such as you have described, a buffet. The same sort of piece minus the top dish wrack can be used in a bedroom for clothes storage, usually having a mirror above, is called a dresser. Whatever it’s called you have excellent taste and I’m sure it’ll enhance the already stunning kitchen. The level of renovation and restoration that you are doing is great and a thrill to witness. Thank you for sharing this journey.
What a great idea putting the whisky bottle behind the wall, I hope you dated it. Why in the world would the put concrete on the ceiling, Billy the stove looks great.
Awesome job Billy, Yanis and Simon! The kitchen looks amazing without the cupboard and a kitchen dresser would look fantastic along that wall. Watching Duncan at work is fascinating too. It's a pity that bag in the ceiling wasn't full of money instead of cement. 😂
Well done, Billy on your vision for the kitchen. It was a great inspiration to add a little surprise behind the plaster board. Your team is so fun to watch. Cleaning as you go is wonderful and actually makes the work area safer, easier and more pleasant to watch.
It could be a dresser - that has a high back with shelves you display your silver and china on. But it could also be a sideboard, chiffonier, or buffet. Lovely work from everyone
I would have taken out the old thrashed cupboard and replaced it with a new built-in china hutch. With three or four full depth plus extension drawers, shelving(glass or wood) with recessed lighting, enclosed with glass doors.
The kitchen is looking better every day. I think the term you are looking for is not a kitchen dresser but rather a sideboard (buffet cabinet). Thanks for putting some Tennessee Jack there, nice touch.
Here in the US we would call a Kitchen Dresser a Buffet (no shelves above) or a Hutch (with shelves and plate rails sitting on top. Also known as a Welsh Cupboard.
I have to say I enjoy every video, watching the progress and witnessing the skills and team work of all involved but the music choices that accompany every video are just wonderful! Well done Simon on the roof rack reinforcement . Many years ago my husband and I bought wooden tongue and groove doors as part of a bedroom renovation. We tied them to a very small roof rack and they ended up as splintered wood scattered all the way along a duel carriageway in North Ayrshire!!! A lesson learned 😂
Love seeing the kitchen getting its finishing touches. Great to see Simon again and that Yannis has turned into quite the carpenter! The “Dresser” for the kitchen in America is called a “China Hutch or China Cabinet”. And if it’s just the cabinet without the shelf we call it a “Side Board”. We use “Dressers” for clothing. I love hearing the differences in the language and culture. Tell Michael we miss him terribly on his channel and he needs to “Crack On” back on “Doing it Ourselves”. lol and a big South Georgia, USA hug to Gwen and the babies! Love your family and channel! You’re doing great Billy!
Yes, dresser is correct. A place for displaying crockery/deĺf and all sorts of knickknack. My grandmother had a beautiful pine dresser in her kichen. As a child I spent many a visit exploring all the objects she had on display - a wonderful treasure trove 🤗
My cousin and I once transported some large, flat boards on top of his car from a hardware store to my house, about a 10-minute drive. I lived in a little beach town at the time, so the wind coming off the ocean could be high at times. We took the smaller roads because we could go slower, and had to hold them onto the top of the car with our hands despite their being tied into place. It was quite a trip! Looks like your transport was less dramatic! Hoping whoever those workmen are in a century or so don't get overly enthusiastic about demolishing things and break that bottle of liquor. Nice gift for them! Billy, a dresser goes in a bedroom. A similar piece in a kitchen would be a sideboard.
As do I! I’ve heard this many times before Alex started and would love to know the artist or orchestra so I could get the CD. As well as the guitar musician that is often played! Love it! I frequently travel 4 hours to go home and this music would be a great “passenger” to travel with!
In the U.S. a dresser is furniture with drawers, usually in the bedroom . What Billy is talking about, I think, is a hutch, which is a piece of furniture for the kitchen or dining room. It usually has cabinets on the bottom and shelves on the top for dishes, etc. If it doesn't have a top section for shelves, it is usually called a buffet.
Just found your page loving it looking at all the convent videos but will go back to older stuff, love this place the history, I noticed you telling alot of information about the place the different rooms and old items you have brought in from other places with their own history and I thought it'd be great if you hung a pretty scroll framed or something like telling the history of what the room was and info on items there originally and added info for anything brought in and it's history and story. Also I haven't found any videos that tell what you plan on using this place for and I'd love to know! So glad there's people out there like you saving beautiful places likes this
Yeah.... I do admit that finally the wall does look better without the cubbord. I always thought this cubbord would need a Big and imposing 'skirting' all around to become interesting. Well done Billy!
I haul stuff on the roof rack of my Prius all the time. I’ve had to do this same thing with lumber to haul drywall and plywood. I run the ratchet straps through the inside of the car for extra security. I’d never trust that the roof rack won’t fly off. Attached to the frame of the car I know it won’t go anywhere.
In the US, instead of dresser, we would say hutch or china cabinet for furniture that has upper cabinets or buffet for something that just has lower cabinets. I always love hearing the words used by the English.
I can’t tell you how much joy I get out of watching Simon, with his wealth of knowledge and craftsmanship ,sharing it with Yannis. Yannis is a delightful and hardworking young man willing to learn whatever is put before him. Bravo to two wonderful human beings.

Closing in the cabinet gives the space a more clean and balanced look… It was a good decision… Crack On Mates!
What a great idea putting the whisky bottle behind the wall, I hope you dated it. Why in the world would the put concrete on the ceiling, Billy the stove looks great.
That wall is looking so much better. Can hardly wait to see it finished. Good work team.
The room is well balanced now, looks fantastic. Well done all 💕🇦🇺
Here in the US we would call a Kitchen Dresser a Buffet (no shelves above) or a Hutch (with shelves and plate rails sitting on top. Also known as a Welsh Cupboard.
In Australia a buffet is used in a dining room to maybe put food on for self serve or storing dining room cutlery etc.
Dresser is for clothing in America. Buffet is for dining rooms or kitchens for storage of table cloths, napkins, etc.
Love today's choice of music.
The surprise in the old cupboard is genius!
Good on you, Simon.
Between you Billy and your team you all do outstanding work! Looks much better with the old cabinet gone!
Alberta Canada, here where it is all white outside, and absolutely freezing is currently -30 Celsius
Aw Simon, i think that the ceiling needs further investigation.😂 Great work, as always. 😊🏴
What is above? They are still looking for hidden treasures.
Dressers are for clothing, while a Buffet or Side Board is for serving from & storage if silver, dishes, chargers, things like that.
Great time capsule !🎉❤
So glad you put something in the cabinet for the next generation of renovators!
Hi Duncan, such a talented, lovely gentleman.
In the US, instead of dresser, we would say hutch or china cabinet for furniture that has upper cabinets or buffet for something that just has lower cabinets. I always love hearing the words used by the English.
Great to see Simon and Yannis working together again. The Dynamic Duo.
In the UK, a Welsh Dresser is a solid wooden kitchen cabinet with attached shelving for displaying plates and other crockery. 👍🙂
