Makes it easier to learn and understand with other Akans language like twi, nzema, ahanta, etc. As you go deep, it’s harder to understand unless you speak it. Akan (Twi) is the main language. Depend's on the Region though. In Central Region it would be Fante and Twi but both are similar Akan dialects like British English and American English. In Accra it would be Twi, English and Ga. But knowing Twi would be enough.

    • @wilsonhowie2968
      @wilsonhowie2968 2 года назад +4

      Ghartey is a name specifically from Winneba and it's surroundings. Many people assume it's a GA name because of the (TEY) ending but it is EFUTU/ FANTI name.

      @ThatKiddVic 2 года назад +1

    • @wilsonhowie2968
      @wilsonhowie2968 2 года назад +2

      @@ThatKiddVic Most names ending with TEY are likely GA and ADANGBE who are collectively called GA/ ADANGBE. LAMPTEY, QUARTEY, ALLOTEY, LOMOTEY, AYITEY are examples of GA names and MANTEY,AFFORTEY, KORTEY, NORTEY are typical ADANGBE names.
      There likely might be some connection between the GHARTEY name and the GA/ADANGBE people since WINNEBA, a coastal fishing town is just a few kilometers away from the GA/ADANGBES who are also Fisherfolks originally.
      Funny thing is GHARTEYS are almost always from WINNEBA and nowhere else. Other typical WINNEBA/FANTI names are GHANNEY, GHANDOH, GHALLEY which i believe are anglicized from some other FANTI / AKAN names like GYAN, GYAMFI.
      GHANSAH is also a FANTI name but found in most FANTI communities. Fantis actually were creative with names, words and sound and still are till this day which makes the Fanti language so unique among the AKAN languages.
      You will have to live among Fantis to be able to decipher what is being spoken in most cases unlike TWI which can be " picked" up just about any where in GHANA.

    Here is an actual explanation I will give you:
    People/Nation: Akan
    Language:Akan
    |
    ----- -----
    | |
    Mfantse Twi
    Branch Branch
    | |
    ----- -----
    | |
    (Gomoa, Ekumfi, (Asante, Akuapem, Wassa,
    Nkusukum, Iguae, Akyem, Kwahu, Brong)
    Breman, Agona)
    There is also Nzema, Bawule (Ivorians) etc, but for the sake of the video I am focusing on the Mfantse and Twi branches of the Akan language.
    These branches serve the same purpose that the French branch, Italian branch, Spanish branch etc serve in the Latin language, as demonstrated below:
    Language:Latin
    |
    ----- -----
    | |
    French Spanish
    Branch Branch
    | |
    ----- -----
    | |
    (Parisien, Congolese, (Castillian,Mexican etc)
    Quebecois etc)
    French and Spanish are both Latin but different varieties. They can both understand about 70-80% of each other but there are enough pronunciation and vocabulary differences to separate them into their own languages/branches. Within these branches they also have their own dialects. This is the same case with Mfantse and Twi.
    To conflate the two would be the same as arbitrarily calling French, "French-Spanish" because Spanish is the most widely used form of Latin today. There is no such thing as "Fante-Twi", that is an odd neo-ideology in Ghana today amongst a very specific clan of people. I have heard no African/Ghanaian linguists, researchers, Ghanaian or foreign universities, or traditional knowledge that claims Mfantse as a Twi variety. Here is an article that does an okay job at also speaking on this: yen.com.gh/172963-fante-tribe-culture-language-clans-food-traditional-wear-facts.html.
    There are way too many vocabulary and phonetic differences between Mfantse and Twi to be considered of the same branch.
