Pretty much, while recently Japan has started putting F-35s on their helicopter carriers that's relatively new, and for decades they didn't have an aircraft carrier. Being an island nation who's domestic food supply and exports are heavily involved with seafood, and having so many extra islands to manage, having a good maritime patrol is vital, it makes perfect sense they'd want a capable strike fighter with good range.

The F-2 wound up being heavier than expected and the composite wing developed cracks. Ultimately it led to an aircraft with a higher wing loading and lower thrust to weight ratio than the F-16.
This was remedied back in 1999. However the recently cracked wing is speculated to be due to seismic activity. Although that aside, Lockheed Martin and wing issues go hand in hand so it's not all that surprising.
I'm sure there must be arguments for the smaller control pannels and smaller wings, too (reduced drag instantly comes to mind). These are so simple changes, I can't immagine they didn't come to mind when the F-16 was designed and if they did, I can't immagine them just ignoring them for no reason what so ever.

@@cptnsparky - If your nation has a tight military budget, then of course cost matters. Not every nation can afford a fleet of the latest bleeding edge jets. Some make do with last generation jets.
At the time Japan had limitations on how big their armed forces could be. So they decided to take a quality over quantity approach hence the price and multirole nature. The F-2 was also built to stay in service a lot longer then most fighters. They are still in active service while Japan's recent F-35 purchase was to replace their ageing F-4 Phantom fleet.
@cptnsparky the F-2 costs nearly as much as the F-15. The original intention for the F-16 was to be a cheaper fighter, of course I'm not saying it's bad at all, the Japanese make fucking amazing weapons systems.
F2 also has a quantilum link to their own 10 story tall gundam drone for ground strike missions.

It is a licensed copy of the F-16. The Japanese upgraded it because the US does NOT sell advanced avionics/weapons suites in international sales.

@@HuiYingHong-b8q Bro, are you really using WW2 era aircraft as an argument here??? LOLOLOL
They do sell them, it just depends who the final customer is. Japan would/should be OK for a sale of advanced avionics.
@crosslink1493 the issue is when u have upgraded planes like the F2, the world would have already moved on to even better planes which make the upgrade pointless. Might as well just buy planes from established sellers Like US or Russia.

Operational requirements from JASDF included at loading cap. of four ASM w/ 450nm combat radius (primarily against the Soviet) - any fighter capable of at the time.
Alongside with the delicate situation of US/JP economic tensions and political relations, Japan had ultimately gave up on domestic and ended up joint development based on F-16.
They were coerced into it and had to give up all the new developments they made as "technology sharing" for free while the received licenses and no information regarding F16s parts/specifications they received.

The F-2 was based upon the F-16 Agile Falcon, which was a low cost version of the f-16 that was not successful.
@@G1NZOU Perhaps they should have gone with the F-15E instead, which I believe has more range and faster. Plus it enables better commonality with the F-15J that the JASDF is flying.

I agree.. I feel like they have paid and showed enough that they are not like their previous generation that fought us during world war 2.. they are a great ally to America and the world.. also that would put China on a leash on doing whatever the hell they want in the far east coast area..
That airframe comparison, if real, is an entirely different aircraft
