- Plans to stop young people born since 2009 ever smoking are being debated and will be voted on later.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's bill aims to create the country's first smoke-free generation in a major public health intervention.
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill would ensure anyone turning 15 from this year would be banned from buying cigarettes, and also aims to make vapes less appealing to children.
But a number of Tory MPs have told the BBC they won't back the bill.

I am for this ban. I care for all the children. So many will be saved but yes many of the really disobedient will still do it and that's up to them but so many children will find it too much of a hassle or will think wait, why is it banned it must be really bad.

You dont have a problem now. But if and I hope you dont, if you ever diagnosed with lung,mouth or throat cancer due to to smoking or heart disease or stroke which smoking can contribute to too, then I'm sure smoking wont be much help for your raised anxiety levels.
I have very had anxiety from a traumatic life. But there are other ways to help. Including going for beautiful walks and exercise in general, watch comedy and just laugh when you can, seeing friends, breathing techniques, meditation, doing a relaxing hobby like art, puzzles etc.
Get off the fags and get better health. Also get therapy. CBT is helpful and worth doing. Find your trigger for anxiety.

To be honest it’s a good thing, I started smoking at 16 thinking it was cool at lunch in school, now 27 and it’s one of my biggest regrets
Yes its also an expensive habit in this country and has been for a while, I gave it up in the early part of this century, so instead of an ashtray full of dogends I have actual stuff to show for my hard earned pennies. If I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have started either.

I think the best way to ban smoking is by making it uncool, just like smoking became "cool" because cool movie characters did it, we should try to promote the uncoolness of smoking in the same way.
instead of teaching elementary school kids about questioning wheither they are a boy or a girl, the should be teaching and showing them videos of the effects of smoking and taking drugs!!

This is truly absolutely spectacular news. I’m so relieved this is actually going forward. This is a landmark move not just for the UK, but for smoking laws around the world as a whole as a benchmark. I can’t wait to see how this goes going forward.

Look around you almost 80% of the world population received a COVID vaccine yet nobody has died or experienced any side effects of which there are none if you understand how they work.

Why not ban 'unhealthy' food? Heart disease and obesity kills more people than smoking.
You would have to police this properly. Otherwise I feel like this would open up a black market, where kids will find ways to obtain it when it's not regulated, and end up with laced items with who knows what. You know what would actually end this? Raise prices. Make it hard to pay for. And run ads where you compare the prices/money wasted VS what they could be using that money for instead. And if that doesn't work, give incentives for not smoking. Give tax incentives for youth who proclaim they don't smoke and run programs for youth/festivals where the common theme is no smoking, and use the money you're bound to save on a decrease in hospital visits to pay for it.

It's law in Texas to ask for ID if customer looks younger than 40. Signs in every place that sells tobacco alcohol tapes etc.
@@autoimmunitycurse Texas seem too extreme but a very similar issue affected me just last month for buying a harmless super glue, despite being closer to 40 than 18! In general the maximum age to challenge ppl in the UK is 25! 🙄

It's an odd approach to banning smoking. But the argument that centre around personal freedoms are deeply flawed. We're not free to do tons of things: attack people, steal their stuff, etc. I don't see why it's such a difficult concept for some to accept that maybe people shouldn't be free to profit from a highly addictive product that has been proven beyond all doubt to do so much harm to people's health. The difference between the health of my mum and my aunt who are sisters two years apart is crazy. My aunt is the older, and she is so fit and active still, yet my mum can barely walk any distance, and it's all because her lungs are so damaged from 50 years of smoking. And even though she's managed to quit, she'll never recover. It was a decision she made when she was still a child, and probably her biggest regret. It was her own choice, but I personally think it should never have been one that was made so easy to take.
Cheers for sharing that though! Still people are already aware of certain smoking dangers and shouldn't have to be patronised not to smoke by these bloody Tories! I stopped smoking 🚬 10 years ago. I have no desire to smoke. I don't even like the smell if burning tobacco. Yet, when I see laws banning cigarettes sales, or restrictions on where you can smoke, etc......I get upset! I used to dream about smoking for at least 5 years after I quit. I actually get anxiety attacks when I see someone smoking. They're so hardwired in me!

I feel like alcohol does more damage to peoples health, families and friendships.
No smoking definitely does more harm to health. Most people drink, only a small fraction smoking these days, but smoking still causes way more health problems in total. Of course yes alcohol is more of a social/societal problem.
Guess it's because I've seen how alcohol destroy families and friendships, ruins physical and mental health etc. Something I see happening in my own family too. Its ripping the family apart and the two alcoholics in the family are struggling with mental issues now and losing their empathy towards others, aggressive and not to mention is killing them. What makes this harder is the fact that they are good people and alcohol has changed them.
More people hooked on this poison that not only negatively impacts the drinker but all of those around them too. My brother has lost his job and sinking fast. My mum is now getting liver issues.

Government support equals higher cigarette taxes. At least in the USA. When I started 🚬 smoking, cigarettes were 52 cent a pack ( yes I'm ancient). Now with all the taxes added on cigarettes are $10-$15 a pack! Here in the US, different states have different prices.
Some states had lower prices than others. So, people started to buy cigarettes from different states. The federal government ordered the cigarette sellers to send a list of who in the other states were buying the cigarettes. Those who purchased the cigarettes were sent a bill for THRIR state cigarette taxes even though they were purchased there!

I quit smoking for 6 years now, after 25 year terrible habit. I did it using a vape. Nothing, I mean nothing else I tried before worked to get me to quit. I haven't touched nor want to touch a cigarette again. Please don't equate the two. Flavored vapes help smokers to quit cigarettes. We don't want to only choose tabacco or menthol or mint. Its too close of an association with the taste of a cigarette
They want to ban smoking but everyone seems to smoke weed. Which is also a criminal offence. This legislation reminds me of the ban on smoking in cars with kids in it. Totally unenforceable. Oh and not forgetting some of that generation banned from smoking already smoke.
What about Alcohol , what a joke
This is bittersweet news. I lost a friend two days ago; a 20 a day smoker of many years, she was seemingly in good health but her health suddenly declined and she was diagnosed with lung cancer just three weeks ago. She was in hospice just two days. Incidentally, her husband quit smoking on 1st July 2007, the day the smoking ban in pubs etc came in. He wished she had done the same. Me, I was a Professional Smoker since my Young Days at School I would go as far as saying Smoking was my Best Friend.
But I did get beyond it after a Long Struggle, & now I can't even Imagine Smoking again its not Easy to give up the Addiction but Believe Me you Can.
As for Sunak's Idea Admirable but won't Work, could even make it Worst as the Youth will be seeing Adults all around them SMOKING.
The Way in my Opinion is relate it to Better Health by staying away from Smoking also away from VAPE.

Uhmmm... we did this in the U.S. years ago.
Why not just add an additional 100% tax on all purchasers born after 1/1/09? Even if they still bother their older friends to buy for them when smoking, the inconvenience of having to spend extra money to buy when you're out is going to be 10x more effective than incentivizing young people to store and stash it in bulk quantities so they don't run out.
And nobody talking about diabetes- band the chocolate!

I remember smoking very big cigars on a crowded 8-hour flight at the age of 16. We have come a long way.
Another point of view is that smoking kept most tommies happy 100 years ago, and they were not all dying from cigarettes, but we should have stopped smoking after the end of the 1st & 2nd great wars. We knew then, but still did it.

Smoking is horrendous but humans have used tobacco since the 1st century BC. Some people will always smoke and the next generation will just be buying adulterated black market tobacco full of god knows what, rather than relatively clean baccy from a licensed shop. Why not ban gambling advertisements and further regulate the gambling industry? I think this poses more social harm but maybe it is more profitable

@@internetoldie Actually, I have seen what smoking does to people's lungs. Its very effective to show the harm it does. Dissection of alcohol damaged livers would be an equally hard hitting deterrent. Alcohol was nor mentioned, smoking was.

vapeing has been known to cause pnuomonia because of all that damp steam you'r breathing into you'r lungs. i even heard of a young girl vaper who's lungs actualy rotted with all that dampness & were found to be full of mould!!!!!
Should have outlawed all forms of smoking, while leaving chewing tobacco freely available instead. Chewing tobacco is smokeless and produces zero secondhand smoke against others, chew at your own risks.
Air pollution is worse than the bit of secondhand smoke you get when outside.
On the surface, this is productive in and of itself. BUT it will set a precedent that wil continue with alcohol, real meats and dairy and eggs, and contact sports that can cause long-term debilitating concussions,. When did the insurance companies start directly influencing how we live our lives?

As a smoker, i fully support the ban. We already have safer alternatives such as nicotine pouches and patches. Nicotine by itself is non-carcinogenic and can be useful in keeping you focused through the day. In the past, smoking tobacco was the only way to ingest nicotine but that is no longer the case. Smoking is stupid and harmful.
But that doesn't mean the government should take away personal choices!

Instead of relavent issues like affordable housing, deflect the issues onto more minor issues you can spin in any direction snd recive free political brownie points, but that shouldn't be how they gain influence, both issues should be equally addressed but nope, deflect the big burning issues with the smaller ones people barely recognize as an issue to begin with.
There is no possible way they can ban flavours unless they plan to ban a lot of other items unrelated to vaping. Firstly, you can mix your own flavours and there a multiple websites showing recipes. All you need to do is buy a few litres of VG or PG liquid (or preferably both or premixed). This is unflavoured E-Liquid that contains no nicotine (so cannot possibly be banned under this new legislation). Then either buy some concentrate (do that now to save hassle if they start waving around a ban hammer) or mix yourself flavours from many online recipe groups.
Simply then add nicotine shots to bring the hit you desire and boom... Government fails again to ban something which can be made at home... they are useless!
