    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Shelby (Julia Roberts) tells M'Lynn (Sally Field) that she's going to have a baby despite the dangers caused by her diabetic condition.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    The title refers to those seemingly frail Southern belles who survive any and all deprivations through whims of iron. Robert Harling's original stage play was set exclusively in a Louisiana beauty parlor where an all-female cast of characters laughed, cried and compared menfolk. The film expands the playing field by including scenes at picnics, hospitals and the like, and by visually depicting the males who never appeared in the stage version. Dolly Parton plays the goodnatured beauty-shop owner, while Shirley MacLaine is the cantankerous town eccentric, decked out in grungy overalls and speaking fluent Trash. Well-to-do Sally Field bravely endures several assaults to her sensibilities, not the least of which is the illness (and subsequent death) of daughter Julia Roberts. The performances are first-rate, with the possible exception of Daryl Hannah's overemphatic portrayal of a gawky hairdresser. The film stumbles a bit in its depiction of the male characters as fools and deadheads, and in the final overlong hospital scenes involving the comatose Roberts, which play like a road company version of Terms of Endearment. Otherwise, Steel Magnolias is a prime example of ensemble filmmaking, lovingly coordinated by director Herbert Ross. (Sidebar: Herbert Ross was reportedly rather rough on Julia Roberts, deriding her lack of experience. The rest of the female cast rallied around Roberts and told the director to lay off or pay the price).

    I think M'Lynn always felt that Jackson convinced Shelby to risk having a baby even though the doctor told her how dangerous it would be. She always felt that Jackson didn't take Shelby's health and feelings as seriously as he could have.

    • @Mia-dt3gl
      @Mia-dt3gl 6 лет назад +114

      I always felt like Shelby downplayed the severity of her condition to Jackson. Since M'Lynn was the only person upset by Shelby's pregnancy (publically at least) he had no reason to doubt Shelby.

    • @ruadhrose
      @ruadhrose 5 лет назад +56

      Mia That was probably the truth to some extent but don’t forget at the beginning of the movie she had told Jackson she wouldn’t marry him because she didn’t want to deny him the chance to have children and he didn’t care. So he knew that having a baby would be a serious risk for her. But also like M’Lynn said normality was important to Shelby and I suspect she was very convincing to Jackson that she could handle a pregnancy without hurting herself.

      When they were at the salon for her wedding M'Lynn told them that Shelby has been really upset lately cause of the doctor saying children weren't possible.

      But he didn’t care or help enough. Shelby talks about it in the play. How he doesn’t help, most of the time he doesn’t do a damn thing and every week he’s off hunting. So it seems Jackson was ready to get married to some pretty thing and didn’t actually care about taking care of her even though he knew she’d need it.

    When I first saw this as a child, I thought it sad that she wanted a baby so badly she would risk her health. Rewatched it as an adult and found it even more tragic because it is hinted at that she’s doing it because her marriage is failing, and she hopes a baby can save it.

    M’Lynn was just trying to be a good mother and save everyone from severe heartbreak if something bad happened to Shelby. Shelby knew the risks but either didn’t want to believe them or chose to ignore them. I get why she wanted to do it but she left her husband a widower and her son without a mother in the end. Sometimes you have to sacrifice what you want most in life to keep yourself healthy. It’s not ideal, but it’s life.

    Its sad that she wanted to have a baby even though getting pregnant and going into labor could put so much stress on her kidney, and her heart. Her mother was concerned because she was told by Shelby's doctor that because of the effects of her Type 1 diabetes in her case that was often quite unpredictable, she couldn't have kids without ending her life in the process. Unfortunately the dread that the mother was fearing came true.

    I just now put two and two together after reading an answer on another site, they mentioned Nancy Beth. She refers to the fact that she's been with Jackson intimately, saying he is "a big hanging man". It kind of sets the tone to the "ladies man" persona Jackson has. It also foreshadows for later in the film, when Shelby bitterly says, "Jackson loves to hunt for anything". I always felt that having babies wasn't the only reason Shelby reconsidered marrying Jackson. I always suspected she feared womanizing on the side would happen.

I had a really healthy pregnancy but when I went into labor I felt like someone stabbed me in my stomach and was twisting the knife constantly. It wasn't until my water broke and I stood up and blood went everywhere that I knew there was a really bad problem with the labor, the placenta detached to early and me and my baby both could have died from it.

    I wonder if jackson really did not take into account how seriously fatal it could be ( & was ) for shelby to have a baby. Please dont flame me for this but shelby saying she would rather have 30 min of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special tells me she knows the huge risks. Maybe she was in denial or thought the drs were wrong but did she or jackson consider the strong possibility that their baby most likely would grow up w/ o a mom ? Shelby has every right to take risks with her life but they really should have considered how horrible it would be for jack Jr to never know his mom. Imagine the guilt that child will have knowing his birth caused her death? Shelby had to think her drs are wrong or she will be a miracle bc if she saw into the future & knew she was gonna die I cant imagine shed want to die or have jack grow up Motherless.
    I also think her mom feels like shelby thinks a handsome young lawyer who could get many women she thinks shelby felt pressured not to cheat Jackson of not having a baby bc mylinn knows that he knows the drs were very clear she will most likely die.
    Also why not try surrogacy if the adoption agents say no bc of her health ?
