hi everyone!!! thank you so much for sharing all of your favourite ice cream flavours with me in the last video comment section!! (I loved reading them) what are you guys working on this week? let me know all the details!
“There’s only one birthday. But there can be many birthday outfits.” TOO TRUE! When I was a teen, I celebrated all month. Then in my 20s I took the whole week. Maybe I’ll go back to those practices with many birthday outfits. Love it.
Hee hee. I was taught you “should” iron your pattern pieces back in the day. Super cute playful dress. I love how you incorporate that childish element in most of your creations. I Love the fitted drop waist in this dress! Well done! I’m working on a Ren Faire ensemble. The chemise is done. Next up the stays. I’m sure it will take a couple of mock ups starting from a pattern. End goal is to have my own pattern that fits perfectly, and get better at boning and cording. Assuredly it will be easier than I’ve made it out to be in my head… 😆
HAPPY BIRTHDAY WEEK!! I just recently found your channel and I’ve got to say, you are absolutely adorable!! Cheerful, bubbly (even in your low moods 😝), bright and colorful!! I am a 44 year old mom of 2 grown kids, wife and retired nurse who bought a sewing machine 18 months ago because I want to learn to sew SOOOOOO BAD but has been too scared to take it out of the box! But I love the patchwork crazy loud nobody else has kinda clothes and you have inspired me to take the leap and just do it! All that can happen is I mess up and learn, right? 😂 😂❤
Go for it and maybe take a few classes at a local shop to get familiar with terms, the machine, and so on. Rosery Apparel is a good RUclips sewist that creates really simple patterns for simple and pretty dresses. Excited for your sewing journey! Forget fear! Jump in and sew! It's really fun, frustrating too, but the rewards are worth every effort!!!
I love the color palette you used in your dress fabrication, it’s very joyful! The collar is extremely fun. I’m working on a new Jasika blazer by Closet Core patterns, but instead of using their instructions I’m using Claire Schaeffer’s instructions in her book “Couture Tailoring.” I also decided to make it out of viscose for summer, which means that steaming the pieces into shape is…not as possible as my first wool version. But I love all the hand work in Schaeffer’s book! It certainly takes longer, but the results are beautiful and it’s very soothing to do. I can just put on a podcast and sit at my table and chill in a way I can’t at my sewing machine ❤
This week I'm working on a cotton toile for a 1930s inspired slip dress! I found this stunning black with beige roses silk fabric at the op shop and it ✨ spoke to me ✨ and whispered "slip dress". I was also super inspired by the Rodarte dress Kendal Jenner wore on Easter weekend! I'm using the foxglove slip dress pattern by Sadie on Etsy and just swapping out the sleeves for a puffy sleeve I have in a simplicity pattern (can't remember the pattern name). The cotton toile turned out sooooo much better than I had hoped and I think I'll definitely be able to wear it! I'm glad I did a toile though so that when I chop into my op shop fabric know what I'm doing 😊. I also got to practice cutting on the bias and installing an invisible zip. One of your videos I watched this week you said you found picking up new skills from patterns and trusting the process helped your sewing skills and I'm also finding the same!! Thanks for this video, I have a vintage pattern for a drop waist dress so similar to this so maybe I'll give it a go next ❤
OMG you’re so adorable.. Ironing is my least favourite part of sewing but you are so passionate about it😂 Love the colours and the super girly vibes yay🎉
Happy Birthday!! What a lovely, lovely dress for the occasion. I'm designing my own dress pattern for my sister-in-law's wedding this summer. I'm done patterning and working on the first mockup. it'll be a pretty pink linen with a circle skirt, and a complex bodice, with a dirndl front, shirred back, puff sleeves, and ruffle details. wish me luck finishing the bodice mockup!!
You are such an adorable, charming and creative young lady! If you were my daughter (more likely grand daughter), I'd be so joy filled to claim you as one of my own. I love your fearless and whimsical fabric selection! And mixing and matching the buttons... Again, fearless and simply brilliant. I'm not through the video to the reveal yet... Can't wait to see your one of a kind creation. Lovely young woman, you inspire me! (I'm 61, so I take liberty with the endearments..😁). 😘💞💖💖
17:10 I never thought to gather skirts in two sections before. That's genius! Makes it more manageable, and makes the gathers more even 😃 I always learn something from your videos 💕
My projects? I am upcycling and mending the giant pile of clothes that wasn’t working for me anymore. I thrift almost exclusively and a lot of it needed work! I’m still very much learning to sew so this is good practice. I also have a braided recycled rag rug made from my children’s too small clothes going, and a knitted cotton sweater tank in my spare time. I stay busy!
There're always HALF- BIRTHDAYS! I love watching you; you inspire me so much! You're doing so many of the things that I've been WANTING to do. Right now I'm not in a position where I can sew, so I'm PLANNING and PLOTTING! I've been wanting to make PATCHWORK jeans (also, JUST jeans) since I began garment sewing. BTW, I'm absolutely horrid at machine sewing; however, my hand stitching is quite good. I'm binging your channel, watching and rewatching. Thank you for your wonderful work - it's all SO beautiful!
couple things, your buttons are supposed to be vertical which is one way to maintain your center back or center front line. if you are to have horizontal button holes then you need to mark your button hole start on the center line of the placket. dont shift your buttons over from the center line cuz that will miss align your garment
I'm so so surprised you decided to sell that dress! It fits you perfectly and it seems like it's so your style. Very cute!! Loved all the fabrics you chose.
I’m actually working on a birthday dress too! But it’s for my little 6 year old friend lol. She has a July birthday and wanted an “American Flag Dress”. So I’m taking inspiration from Shirley Temple style dresses for the silhouette, which I think will look super cute!
Wow, wow, wow! The whimsy on the dress! Love that! Currently have all my sewing projects on hold as I do the worst task in sewing: cutting out/assembling printed paper patterns. I've been working my way through my stack of 20 that I've accumulated over the last year or so 😅
Happy birthday! You have most incredible colour sense for your patchwork. ❤ I’m working on my May the Fourth dress! It’s my third annual and it got me back into sewing this year after a months-long slump. ☺️
Happy Birthday Carly! I'm a brand new, beginner sewist. I'm very ambitious and going to try and make my first item of clothing! We'll see how it goes. If it's a flop, I'll be happy to learn along the way :)
Your videos are so filled with joy! Your style inspires me to be more child-like and adventurous with my creations ❤ Right now, I am on month 4 of a sweater knitting project that I am in love with, but eager to wrap up so I can start on something new!
So cute! I just happily stumbled across your RUclips today 🩷 I've started sewing again after like 20yrs 😅 it's a wild ride. Also hello fellow Aussie 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
Happy birthday! You make me want to try out some vintage patterns ha:) currently working on the green pepper polar lodge jacket that i had to hem 7.5 inches because i am a tiny thang lol but the fleece im working with is red snakes on black and it's coming out so cool! can't wait for your next vid 💛
Amazing! You’re right, my six year old self would be all over that dress. I think it actually has a similar cut to one that legitimately was my favourite dress in pre-school. Core memory unlocked?! I just finished a petticoat for a dance happening tonight (lol) so I’m deciding on my next project right now! Very inspired by that collar on this dress.
Yes to the buttons question. I have a shirt with buttons down the front that has around 7 or 8 left to do and it’s been sitting there unfinished for months at this point. 😬 I need to bust it out so my project can finally be done!!
Buttons and button holes are the bane of my existence, right next to invisible zippers! And it hasn't changed in the million plus years I have been sewing. lol
Sooo stinkin’ cute! I have had the pattern cut out for weeks now, for a pair of elastic-waist balloon/carrot/clown pants from Style Arc, I just need enough floor space to lay out my fabric. Also I’ve got low-key obsessed with the idea of making a top with princess seams, and putting invisible zips in the princess seams so my almost-4-month-old can have… access 😁. I think I might try the idea with a simple tee pattern first (also from Style Arc) and then if it works I could try with a fitted pattern! Honestly Carly, I find your videos so inspiring, I feel like you give me sewjo ❤
O Carly you are one beautiful gem - i am also a freestyle sewer i alway though i should follow a pattern but funny enough i find patterns overwhelming and i have to constantly adjust ( just me)
Have an awesome birthday ! Your dress looks very cute ! I'm working on a pattern test at the moment, a cute barbie pink wrap dress to get me sewing in the midst of a pretty stressful exam year !
Just finished the Cass wide leg culottes by the fabric store. Not feeling amazing, They're basically clown pants. I will try the Magda Crisp Linen Pants for more shaping. PDF printed, this time I'll also stick it together in the kitchen rather than on carpet so it's actually flat and I gotta figure out how I want to piece the fabric together cause I do not have enough to just cut the panels...
I’m starting to work on a wedding party outfit for one of my dearest friends this week, tulle skirt and a crop top, I’m so excited,🫶🏻 happy B-day week Carly🎂 OH AND I have question for like minded sewist friends here: Tell me your favorite pattern creator here or on etsy, please, I’m looking for recommendations! I follow Silversaga patterns and Roberts Wood DS, but I have 2 pieces of cotton with floral print that I would like to let stand out on some cute summer tops, so my idea is something minimalistic yet beatiful and interesting, I don’ want the print to get lost in ruching or to much intricate pannels🤔 thank you for reading and your suggestion🫶🏻
I just got a dining table and now I need to sew placemats! I love being able to create custom dining linens. I've always wondered... What's the point of two gathering rows of stitches (vs one row)? I tried to Google but must be using the wrong wording!
Two rows gives you more even gathers, plus it’s more sturdy, and you’re less likely to pop the thread(s) while gathering, and having to start all over. Doing a test run on a short pieces of fabric using one thread and two threads will show you how much nicer the gathers are with two rows. 👍
Very pretty! So here are some of my suggestions which you may consider and take ir leave as you wish. I do not intend to be critical because I do admire you and your creations and enthusiasm. 1. White or pastel shoes with pastel clothing. 2. When sewing with interesting patterns on the cloth, fairies, castles, paisley, etc., take time to thoughtfully place your pattern pieces so that the images on the fabric are featured nicely on the garment. It's a bit fussy, but I promise you'll love the results. This dress pattern has come to life in your hands! Well done!
hi everyone!!!

currently making 18th century stays for a renfaire!
This video inspired me to thrift some vintage Unicorn sheets to try making my first dress. Your dress is such a vibe!

I love the colors! The silhouette looks good on you!
You've encouraged me to start sewing again, not anywhere near this level of course, but excited to one day get there hah ☺️
