    LA NORIA
    Directed by Carlos Baena
    A NightWheel Pictures Film
    www.lanoriafilm.com/
"The minute you press play and the initial images of La Noria wash over your eyeballs, one’s immediate reaction is a simple “wow”. Maybe you’re more jaded than me, and the sheer insanity of modern CG animation fails to move you, but speaking for myself, despite 10,000 hours of short film watching under my belt, a life-long love of animation, and the existence of recent photo-real short films like Garden Party, the level of design polish in great, commercially-minded 3D animations can still take my breath away. Fortunately La Noria has a couple of minutes of setup in the beginning, because shortly thereafter my breath taken away again for altogether different reasons.
The annals of CG horror shorts in this sort of mainstream style is rather limited-"9", by Shane Acker, certainly played in this space, and "Alma" is a creepy holiday classic. Both films are over a decade old though, and neither can really match "La Noria" for sheer terror. From the monster design which feels ripped out of some the most twisted corners of the Resident Evil game franchise, to the tense horror-chase mechanics, this film is, in spite of its seemingly kid-friendly design, truly adrenaline-producing.
The story itself is a touch less impressive, but ultimately satisfying. It has elements of heart-string pulling, as it focuses on a ferris wheel-loving child who is torn up over the loss of his father. Gathering photos and other mementos together into a sort of shrine, the child’s heart-ache seems to birth the darkness that soon threatens him. Details from the photos hint at a back-story-the military uniform his father wears for example-and naturally create associations in one’s mind to the work of Guillermo Del Toro and his masterpiece "Pan’s Labyrinth". While this setup is nicely pulled together into a cathartic and feel-good ending, it is mainly table-setting for the action, which is intense, and in comprising the bulk of the 11min runtime, quite long by short animation standards.
One can’t question the exquisiteness of this action-a spooky old mansion, replete with string lights and stained glass windows, provides a splendid backdrop for scrambling chases and doors frantically being shut in the face of grasping monsters. More so than even the design quality, it is in these sequences that the experience and skill of director Carlos Baena seems to show.
Baena has over 20 years of experience in animation with tenures at Industrial Light & Magic, and Pixar on his resume, with credits that include work on massive franchises such Star Wars, Toy Story, and Jurassic Park. Produced under the banner of his own production company, NightWheel Pictures, Baena took advantage of his status as co-founder of Artella, an animation platform that allows for virtual collaboration, in the creation of the film. Baena used the platform to source a diverse crew of independent artists to work on La Noria, with over 100 contributors ultimately joining the project, hailing from all over the world.
The result paid off-not only is "La Noria" a stunning showpiece for Baena and Artella, it has received widespread acclaim, winning dozens of awards, including Best Short at Tokyo’s prestigious Short Shorts Asia. Dropping online this week with an exclusive post on Variety, the celebration from worldwide audiences is sure to spread. As for Baena’s next steps, he is currently set up at Paramount Pictures. Details on his projects there are under wraps for now, but with luck, we’ll be seeing a feature film from Baena on the big screen in the near future." - S/W Curator, Jason Sondhi

As a filmmaker, your biggest challenge is not making a film, but getting your film seen. This is no small task and requires numerous efforts largely unrelated to the craft of filmmaking. The film community has been fragmented across tools that were never meant for them. Something is missing-something to bring us together. This is such a wonderful short film that symbolizes coping with grief. Even so, I just love the concept of monsters that would normally scare children; actually looking out for them, protecting them, or helping them. And I wish this kind of topic was touched upon in films and stories more often, it’s so good.

In my opinion, this movie gives a nice image of what depression can be like. Depression often leads from loneliness or hard times in your life. In the beginning of the movie, the boy is alone in a room with only dim light (which isn't positive for your emotional well-being either, but also represents how depression can cast shadows over your entire life), where he is struggling with something which just doesn't work. Then his demons appear and come after him, but the more he runs from them and tries to hide them, the more places in his life become 'infected' and inaccesible. Eventually he decides to take charge. He decides that his demons aren't something he needs to run away from but instead just live along them while creating the room he needs to be himself. Once you can do this, you may actually brighten up the world around you with use of your own memories and experiences. And although your demons may never really go away, you can just look at them from a little distance without really being affected by them any more...

The message is : We shouldn’t run from our monsters ( pain, agony, guilt etc. ) but instead listen to them. They have the key to the light.
Edit - Let me clarify myself. The western philosophy is based upon escapism. They suppress their emotions in the name of morals and then tag the suppressed emotions as monsters. These monsters are your creation.
If you want to let go then cry when you feel like crying, blast when you get angry, laugh when you feel like laughing. Don’t suppress it.
The eastern philosophy believes in let go. Be free and be in the present. Not in the dead past.

I don't think that's the messenge tho. Listening to our monsters can get some people really depressed and even might end up suiciding. Rather than that I think the message is to let go of the grief, sadness and loss and remember the good times he had. When he let go the sadness and grief the monsters dissapeared.. When he saw the good memories the lights started showing and he ended up being happy with what he made.

Look up the meaning of "broken hearted" in either the Hebrew or Greek. It will all make sense. I think Hebrew because their words are verbs. If I recall, Broken meant something like ripped, shredded, the way a ship can be shredded when hitting rocks, or predators can tear the flesh of their prey. And some even die from broken heart syndrome. It's a real thing. People who haven't been there don't understand, or want to pretend to ignore it.

They kicked me out this year in the middle of the night and I left with my belongings wandering the street. I was crying and in pain. I didn't have anywhere to go. In this world losing your parents is the worse thing that can happen to you. I am living alone now I miss mom n dad but I'm happy I'm out of that toxic family. I loved this story very much. It pains me to see such a young child losing his father. There is no other pain than losing a parent, child or pet. It is the emotional bond we create that truly transcends us as humans. I lost my mother 19 years ago and it still breaks my heart when I see or smell something that reminds me of her. I keep a perfume bottle that she would have on her dresser. The smell reminds of our days together. I will never get over the loss, but at least I know she still there in my heart. I love animation and how the monsters of grief showed this young child something truly amazing. A fantastic creative piece about grief and finally some kind of peace.

  • @TramAnh-lz2cu
    @TramAnh-lz2cu 4 года назад +600

I feel like the monsters are parts of the child. He finds them/himself ugly, scary, and hateful. The monsters might be his fear, his loneliness, his anger, etc. The biggest monster is the monster without the heart, which represents his pain of being left behind. When someone you love's gone, it feels like a part of you's gone with him too.
The round tin gear is placed in the center of the wheel, makes the whole wheel work. The wheel is his good memories of childhood. The gear is the heart. His heart is broken when his father - who built up the happy memories together with him - left. He was hurt so deeply that he couldn't find happiness in those memories anymore. Instead, all he had were the feelings of anger, unsuitability, and impossibility. He was disappointed of his father and himself for being left behind.
Back to the monsters, somehow when the child reached his highest fear that he might be broken forever, the gear came to him like a peace sign from the monsters and he was not afraid anymore. The monsters fixed it for him. This is when the same old miracle happens. The gear is fixed and he can feel that he is fixed again in the good old memories and finally lights reflect in his eyes, again. As I said before, the monsters are parts of himself, so it's him who fixed his own heart??? That is so miraculous. Unfortunately, this is only a miracle in a fairy tale because no monsters in your internal world would want to help you to make them disappear, in reality. The wheel can only/or mostly be fixed by external force. Therefore the only way to get rid of the monsters in you is to talk to somebody else. Someone trustful and love-ful enough and is willing to help you.
Urgh my English is so bad but nah I don't wanna care about word choices and grammars at 2am.

It's incredible to rewatch and see that the monsters aren't taking or destroying his things, they're collecting and reassembling them into something new! They may not be pretty to look at, but they're meant to serve a purpose. Besides that, they only ever reach out to him. The way they look, move, and sound and their habit of breaking the old structures of the loney house are what makes us afraid of them. I don't believe they ever intended to harm the boy. Such a brilliant short film!

This truly is an amazing depiction of a shattered boy running from his pain, when in reality, all he needed to do was look at it for the monster that it seemed to be. The scene when the picture hit the floor was very moving. He saw shattered memories of the past and tried running from them, hence the monster in the corner. When he finally screams at the mirror is a beautiful moment of realization for him. He just lets his grief out instead of bottling it up. This video teaches a beautiful lesson that we can all learn from☺️

@@anonymousgirl8706 hello I’m happy to answer. Jesus Christ is more than a prophet and messenger, he is God in human form as promised in the Old Testament to come and bring all the world into belief into the one true God, who is Father God. He started with the Hebrews to bring a special line of people that would eventually birth Jesus Christ our messiah, and God will finish with the Hebrews at the end times and save a remnant of them too, but for now Jesus Christ came to save as many as called all over the world, and those who respond to the call of repentance and faith into his sheepfold, accept Jesus Christ as their only Lord and savior. If you read the beginning of genesis, when eve is deceived by the serpent, God promises through eves offspring, a child will be born to crush the head of the serpent, this child was and is Jesus Christ our savior. He is mentioned and prophesied to come In the Old Testament prophet books, laws, psalms and all over the Old Testament. This is to show he isn’t just some man who claimed to be Gods son, but to prove he was who he said. People believed he would be a great warrior King that would overthrow the Roman Empire, all the world, and make Israel the rulers of the earth. They didn’t expect him to first be a suffering servant who would be sacrificed for their sins and the whole worlds, but over and over the prophets would warn the Jewish people to not sin and disobey God, but they would either disregard or Kill those prophets. And so Jesus came and they did the same to him as it said they would, but it was actually a good thing, anyone who looks to Jesus Christ, believes and confess him as lord and savior will be saved, that his sacrifice, death burial and resurrection saves them and gives them eternal life. The next time Jesus Christ comes back, he will come as the warrior King of Kings, and destroy all sin and lawlessness. All those who trust in him will be saved from this judgement.
Isa 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isa 52:13 Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.
Isa 52:14 As many were astonished at you- his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind-
Isa 52:15 so shall he sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths because of him, for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand.
Isa 53:1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Isa 53:2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isa 53:4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned-every one-to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?
Isa 53:9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Isa 53:10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isa 53:11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Jer 23:5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
Jer 23:6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.’

@@anonymousgirl8706 more scriptures for you, I’m using Old Testament to show you proof that the New Testament is true and Jesus is who was promised:
Gen 3:15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
Gen 22:1 After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Gen 22:2 He said, “Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
Gen 22:3 So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Gen 22:4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.
Gen 22:5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
Gen 22:6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together.
Gen 22:7 And Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” He said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
Gen 22:8 Abraham said, “God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.” So they went both of them together.
Gen 22:9 When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order and bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.
Gen 22:10 Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
Gen 22:11 But the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Gen 22:12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”
Gen 22:13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.
Gen 22:14 So Abraham called the name of that place, “The LORD will provide”; as it is said to this day, “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided.”
Gen 22:15 And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham a second time from heaven
Gen 22:16 and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,
Gen 22:18 and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.”
If you see the part of Abraham about to give Isaac as a sacrifice. Its a spiritual prophecy of God providing his own son Jesus Christ but not sparing him, see how it says God will provide the lamb, Jesus Christ is the lamb slain for the sins of the world. And then how it says all the nations shall be blessed? That’s because it’s not just the promise of the Jews, but it would be to all peoples, as promised here by God, through Jesus Christ his son!
And then there’s this psalm talking about Gods son: Psa 2:1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
Psa 2:2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,
Psa 2:3 “Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.”
Psa 2:4 He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.
Psa 2:5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath, and terrify them in his fury, saying,
Psa 2:6 “As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill.”
Psa 2:7 I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.
Psa 2:8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.
Psa 2:9 You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”
Psa 2:10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth.
Psa 2:11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
Psa 2:12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

@@mmaakk32 sad right? Great animation, but the story is about as flat as a roadkill squirrel. A Monster without context is just an ugly picture. If you want chills you need a story.
I would have made the Boy Blind. Imagine the fear of the scenes then. While we watch horrid creatures sneak up on a child we know can't see them. Then he touches one and almost gets his hand bit off. He runs and stumbles because he can't see. All the while the story of his dead dad is reveled through photos one at a time.
What if the monsters are actually friends and family, and because he's in such a horrible state he can't see them as anything but Monsters coming to hurt him.
I think it wouldn't have been hard to actually make the story good. But writing gets put on the bottom of the list in movies and film. Secound fiddle to cinematography, acting, and even The F-ING music.
That's why the book is always better than the movie, and why they can't make a good movie out of a video game.
      At least in my opinion.😥

I thought it was really a horror film (coz I love horror movies or anything that involves), like real monsters(you know what i mean) but when that monsters gave that last piece to that ferris wheel to the young man, it hits me(my own opinion) that THESE MONSTERS ARE OUR FEELINGS, OUR OWN GRIEF, that sometimes it can make us feel hate and scared to the reality that we didn't know how to accept this sad feelings inside, the emptiness that we felt for the lost one. We tried to push those memories behind our mind. The young boy stared at the ferris wheel and the old photos together with his father. He cried because of the memories that they've been together when his dad is alive and smiled at the same time because ALSO of the memories with his father that will never be forgotten. Those monsters disappear because of the young boy acceptance.

I'm getting sick of people who can't comprehend that a horror film can do more than just be frightening. "This isn't horror" yes, it factually is lol. It has an emotional backbone and deeper meaning, but that doesn't make it not a horror. That's like saying the avengers isn't an action movie just because there's emotional drama in it. People have, for some reason, decided that horror can't have a deeper meaning or purpose other than jump scares. I see reoccurring comments about Haunting of Hill House, Bly Manor, etc, and it's so silly.
