The Trip That Beat Us Ep12- We’re done

- We have been recuperating from the bad weather in an AirBnB and hoping that Carol’s shoulder will recover so we can get back on the road. We pick a sunny day to take a walk around the village of Burneside and along the banks of the River Sprint.
The following day we have to leave the comfort of the AirBnB and lo and behold it is raining again! We park up at Arnside for a fry up followed by a quick walk to stretch our legs then head off to our spot for the night at Lakeside at the southern end of Lake Windermere.
The following morning we have booked tickets to visit Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s House. Our tour of the house gave us an appetite so we drive into Hawkshead in search of breakfast baguettes.
Next we need a walk so head up to Tarn Hows for a circuit of the tarns in the beautiful afternoon sunshine.
As the sun starts to set we head up to Walna Scar. A hair-raising ascent and forecast of driving rain for the next few days is enough to make up our minds to head home. Only 5hrs 38mins if we take the M6 toll road!
This episode was filmed 27th February to 1st March 2022

Excellent! ❤️ That trip was wonderful to watch despite the weather! Personally I love a good storm! I know you both do as well but it seemed a bit too cold. Anxious to hear about Carols shoulder but realize you need a break! Well wishes to you both😘

Thanks Carol and Ken for taking us along.
You’re welcome. Thanks Jay 🙂
Hello Carol and Ken, new sub here , i just wanted to comment on how sweet it is to see when Ken films how Happy Carol is , just shows pure love ;
Thanks for subbing and the lovely comment 🙏😊
Your storytelling, editing of clips, visuals, narration and use of music really is top class. Add to that how likeable you both are, makes this channel essential viewing. Thank you, and sorry the trip ended earlier than anticipated.
That’s very kind of you, thanks Richard 🙏
What a great end to a wonderful holiday and I'm glad you never had any damages to the under side of your van.
If you get up that way again Handsome Brewery that you passed brew some beautiful beer.
Good luck on your summer travels and can’t wait to see your videos on your return.
Shame the brewery was closed ☺️ Thanks for watching 🙂🙏
Enjoyed this series. I am a quilter so I paused the video at Beatrix Potters place to have a good look at the quilt on the bed. Thanks for taking us along.
Glad you enjoyed it Glenys 🙂
Haha there you have Newfoundland and Labrador in the one (the dogs) ❤️ great video
Lovely photography thank you for taking us with you. Have a nice rest but please do come back x
Some of those roads are absolutely scary. Love the pictures.
The Bobbin Mill was once owned by my husbands 3 x gt Grandfather Jeremiah Coward. We often travel from Suffolk to Ambleside to do family history research.
Wow, how interesting. We really enjoyed our visit and guided tour of the bobbin mill when we visited in 2017 🙂
Hello Carol and Ken. I enjoy this vlog, even more as it is your last one for a while. Thank you for all the effort and enjoy your break 😁 👋
Thanks Anita 🙂
I throughly enjoyed this series .
storms ,floods ,snow wind and rain make for memories in their own right .I’m sure it’s a trip you will reminisce over many times …..and lovely to hear my favourite music again
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Spent my day driving into and around the Amish countryside looking for strawberries to make some strawberry and banana jam. Not many to find. I was put on a list for maybe 2 weeks. Great adventured that you shared with us. Thanks
Thanks Marie. Good luck with the strawberry hunt 🍓🙂👍
I know it is past days. But I’m so sorry Carol had shoulder troubles. I love Air B&B’s and so far, have not been disappointed! I know by now Carol has healed! PS. Adorable crazy dog!
Thanks for your concern. Yes, Carol is much better now. We love AirBnBs too 🙂
The sky looked good for the morning finally.
You are true champions and much
Admired. Waiting for the next
Adventure.
Thanks Richard 🙏
That looked a wonderful place to walk dog's. It looked cosy and welcoming the air b and b. Oh frogs are the bane of my life, as a young girl someone put a frog down my vest and i screamed until my friend got it out.I'm watching this while tucked up in bed. Enjoy your break, but hoping you won't be away for to long. Loved seeing Beatrix potters home. XX ❤️💙
Glad you enjoyed it Margaret. That frog incident must have traumatised you for life!
@@LifeistooshortCK Yes it did and to make matters worse it was still alive 😱 XX ❤️💙

Another great video guys, I was up there in April, like you I was surprised 50p for a wee, that's really taking the p......
Carol, thank you for the maps inserted.
You’re welcome ☺️
What a beautiful house on the Hill Top.
We used to go to Arnside for caravan holidays when I was a child. We children were warned about the quicksands but played on the “beach” anyway. Another year we stayed for a week in Hawkshead, it was so hot that the tar was melted on the roads. Strange that’s what I’ve remembered for probably 60 years. Went to Tarn Hows too. Thanks for the memories.
Glad we could bring back some happy memories for you Angela. Those must have been such great holidays 🙂
I have really enjoyed this trip. Dont be gone for to long. Thank you.
Thanks Clare 🙂
@Life is too Short
Some very nice locations Ken. Sorry to se it finish. Loking forward to the next one.
Thanks Rupert 🙂
i'm still amazed at sharing one lane. thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much… enjoy your break., hope to watch your next adventure.
Cracking last day. Cracking paths and cracking lanes. Thanks. Enjoyed that. Oh, and loved the wrap up sequence at the end.
Thanks Euan 🙂
In the past I commented that your music sound levels were too high to hear be able to hear the dialog. You said you would work on that. Well I here to tell you you got the levels perfect. Very professional. This was the best on yet! Thank you!
Glad to hear it David. Thanks for the feedback 🙂👍
enjoy video as always, so much to 👀, yummy 😋 food as always.
views and scenery great.
Carol go and get your shoulder scanned, to be on the safe side.
take ❤
Thanks Moira. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂👍

...but what a fourteen days they were!!! I am just sorry that my reader didn't bring this to me a day earlier. It was a truly grand finale. Thanks K&C - bring on the next lot 😄YAM xx
Thanks for watching, YAM and all your lovely comments ❤️
Thank you for taking us with you. Always beautiful and we watch every one. Hope Carol, heals up. All too familiar with shoulder problems. Pain it a rough journey. Be blessed.
Thanks Terry 🙏
Very nice montage at the end of this video. This whole series was entertaining. I hope Carol's shoulder is better.
Thanks Philip 🙂
Another super series, hats off to your tenacity I wouldnt have lasted 14 days in those conditions. 🎉🎉
Thanks Gwen. It did put us off camping in the winter but tempted to try it again this year 😁
Great video as usual guys.. I've said it before ken... perfect voice for snooker commentary... I just think yis are great 👍
I will have to give that a try 😁👍
Live in watching your floor so much they are so interesting and you explain everything so clearly photographs so stunning take care and stay safe
Thank you 🙏
Well you both deserve a rest although I will miss you and your wonderful videos.
Thanks Larry 🙂
Lake District looks lovely. Hope Carol's shoulder is better.
Thanks Susan 🙂
Another beautiful video from my favorite you tubers, beautiful couple and so real. Love it, thanks
Thanks for watching Gerald, you are very kind 🙏
Love the Air B&B’s. It so nice to be able to do some cooking and washing. Much better than a hotel to me. Lovely series in spite of the gloomy weather. This is the second time I’ve watched it, and as usual, saw things I missed the first go around. Thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks for watching, again 😁👍
Thank you again Ken and Carol. I love the little things you notice like the spider and the cat in the sun. It’s those things that make it real and also relaxing. Have a good break and come back when you feel ready. All the best- Sarah
Thanks Sarah 🙂
Great Trip have a good break 😁
I really enjoyed this adventure and 14 days is a long adventure in my mind. We usually do weekends, a week or 10 days. I hope you are both fit and healthy. Looking forward to your next adventure. Take care Gill
Thanks for watching Gill. We are both fine and enjoying our break ☺️
An excellent 14 days. Don’t blame you for going home with that weather on the way.
In spite of the weather that still looked like a great trip and you both just got stuck in, with the help of a bacon sandwich or two! The Lake District is a fantastic location and I loved the footage of Hill Top. I’ve passed it many times but I’ve never been in because it’s always so busy. I think now I will definitely make the effort to go. Thanks as always for sharing a really interesting and professional video.
Thank you Sylvia. We appreciate all your lovely comments 🙂
I was amazed to learn that tree roots are deep when they have to find water. I live in a wet climate so trees come down easier because they don’t have to dive down for water. We live next to a ravine and every year we hear one come down, too wet.
Never realised that 👍
That cottage was amazing inside, well equipped and decorated with no expense spared. One tense part of the otherwise relaxing video, was the steep hillclimb expecting something coming down the hill. Fantastic series! Great adventures.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
really enjoyed that wee vid of you folks, keep her lit.., PS good driving skills, but you were lucky a car even a walker was not coming balling down the hill would have defo killed your momentum in low gears. good stuff x
I concur with Jay. A 14 day trip is a booming success and the weather was not cooperating at all. Hope Carol's shoulder gets better quickly.
Thanks Clara 🙂
Really enjoyed this video. I went to school at Casterton near Kirkby Lonsdale and later we used to have a caravan at Hill of Oaks and then a holiday home, a little cottage in Bowness so I know the Lake District well. It’s been a lovely trip down memory lane, it’s a beautiful part of the world.
Glad you enjoyed the trip down memory Lane. It is indeed a beautiful part of the world 🙂
I did reply earlier but it hasn’t appeared! 🤷🏼♀️ if you go again you should visit Kirkby Lonsdale, it’s a lovely village, some great walks, Devil’s Bridge, Ruskin’s View. Also just up the road on the back road between Casterton and Barbon there’s Barbon Terrace, a really quiet spot at the side of Barbon Fell, which is also a great walk. We used to climb it early and have breakfast at the top! It’s a narrow track but there are recesses where you can park, overnight too without issue, great views. Barbon is a lovely village too, good walks, packhorse bridge and the Barbon Inn is an old traditional pub. I filmed this video a few years ago, on my return journey from Barbon Terrace to Casterton. Casterton School is where the Bronte sisters went and is the school “Lowood” is based on in Jane Eyre.

PS: my previous comment included a google maps link, perhaps that’s why it didn’t publish? I’ll try again in a separate comment.
Yes it doesn’t like links outside of RUclips. Here are the coordinates of the parking spot that you can put into any maps app. If you go onto street view and turn to the side you’ll see the recessed area...

beautiful scenery, food looked yummy at the pub. hope her shoulder gets to feeling better, and its nothing serious,
Thank you. The shoulder took a couple of months to heal but is all good now 🙂👍
That was a good trip! Like the flash backs at the end. Hope Carol's shoulder is feeling better.
Carol’s shoulder is much better now thanks 🙏
Carol’s shoulder is much better now thanks 🙏
Thanks for the warts and all video. I like your channel and have found it interesting to follow with the notion of getting a motorhome. This has now confirmed that it is not going to be.
The anxiety of hoping to secure a safe overnight parking is totally off putting. I now realise why we see so many camper and motorhomes parked up on people's drives and never moving.
B&B and the Mercedes will be the way forward for us.
It can be tiring searching for a good place to stay overnight and would certainly not suit everyone 🙂
14 day trip in winter is definitely an achievement and it has been great to watch 👍 thanks Carol an Ken
Thanks James 🙏
Awesome trip. Love Beatrix Potter cottage. I bought the collection of books for my daughter 40 years ago, and now my grandson has them! Our version of red sky at nite sailors delight, red sky in morn sailor be warn. ☺️
I Always think its sad when its time to head home but you have done very well on this trip having encountered all weather conditions and the cold days, and as you have to improvise in a small van it takes some planning, although you are well organised, but i think it can be tiring as well being on the road for long periods, It brought back memories for me this time as I know the areas you covered so well, look forward to new videos in due course, enjoy your break, Regards, Colin.
Thanks Colin 🙂
@@LifeistooshortCK Can I just add I think the Music you chose for this video was really atmospheric especially towards the end when you decided to make for the M6 and Home, Regards, Colin.
Excellent. Didn't beat you by much. Heroic stuff in my opinion.
Thanks Willie ☺️
What a beautiful lake region.
Oh Ken, you old romantic, you and the kissing gates. Thanks guys, a lovely series, shame about the weather, but then it was February. I do hope your shoulder is better now Carol, you were very professional putting on a brave face for the camera when in pain Take care. Thank you 👍
Thanks Simon 🙂

Nice tour of Beatrix potter home, and not forgetting the delightful walks.
Thank you Susan 🙂
Might only have been 14 days, but they were certainly epic. Thanks once again for taking us back in time, must be 30 years since we were last in Hawkshead and walked back from the Old Man of Coniston down the Walna Scar Road! Steep doesn't come close!! Take care and enjoy your break. Knowing you guys, it won't be long before we're sat watching you with a cup of hot chocolate. 😉📺☕🐕🚙
So glad you enjoyed it. Take care guys ❤️
Another great trip, thanks for taking us along. Enjoy your break, no rush, but like so many others, I look forward to your next adventure.
Thank you 🙏

Merci Muriel. Vous êtes très gentille 🙂👍
That was a fantastic trip, I loved ever minute of it, thank you, it didn't be you, you both done marvellous, it no fun in the UK in winter, thank you again, and God bless the both of you
Thanks Dallas 🙏
I very much enjoy your trips. Please don’t quit. Regards from Canada🇨🇦!
Your mention of Sir Donald Campbell reminded me of a our van trip last year in Australia. We travelled over 18000 km and one of the highlights was visiting Dumbleyung in Western Australia where Sir Donald Campbell made his world record in 1964 on Lake Dumbleyung
Didn’t know about his record at Lake Dumbleyung. He certainly was courageous in his record attempts.
George the dog in the red van! Too funny! Love your videos and touring with you two. Thank you so much for them, and now it is time for you to go home, relax and take a break.
Hope Carol’s shoulder gets better soon.👍Cortisone shots work wonders for certain causes of joint pain.
Thanks for watching Suzy. George would certainly be a step too far for our little van 😂
Lovely views despite the rain and clouds. You’ve had your fair share. The water was so still. Like the ticket holder👍. Love frosty mornings. Wow - Beatrix Potter’s house! So immersive. Wonderful. Definitely good idea to go when it’s quiet. You can get vegan bacon and sausages Ken 🤣😂 though your baguette looked very satisfying. What a great walk Tarn Hows was. Cows in panda suits😂. Not much room for you in the van if you had George. That road 😬 Walmart Scar looked fabulous. Aw we were heading back south from Skye at the same time as you were heading back. Just a few hours ahead. Good trip. Hope all is well and you will be back on the road again soon. 😊🧙♂️
Thanks for watching guys and we love reading all your comments. Looking forward to seeing your next trip 🙂👍
Another great series to add to your playlists and very enjoyable to watch as always.
The longer outro I suggested is beautifully done and I can now click the like button in plenty of time on the old smart tv. Well done 👍
Thanks for that 🙂👍
lovely green and mint old car in that driveway
ok, Carol sometimes looks like "Robby the Robot" when her jacket cords stick out. Much love, thanks for sharing.😀
😂🤖😂
I'm so glad you enjoyed this trip in spite of the weather. I did too. There were some great tips as always. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Carole 🙏
Thanks! Miss you two. I hope you’re getting ready to enjoy the holidays. All the best,
Susan
We will be back as soon as we have the next series ready. Thank you for the super thanks, it’s much appreciated. ❤️❤️❤️
Superb series as always, Carol and Ken. Many thanks for taking the time and effort. Hope you are both well and hope to see more from you soon. All the best.
Thanks Craig 🙂
Epic journey, you showed us many interesting areas... Thank you
I think next year you should go back to the Isle of Man for the TT 😊really enjoy watching your channel. Have a great rest and I hope your shoulder gets better Carol.
We would love that ☺️
Thank you for sharing your adventures with me/us all. You are both inspirational in so many ways; but the most special gift you have and share with us, is your fabulous relationship.
I look forward to spotting you one day or at least your 'Little Red Van'
Enjoy your rest, both of you. Best Regards from Preston, Lancs
Thanks for watching and your lovely comment 🙏
Hi Ken and Carol, another great vid in a wonderful part of the country. Enjoyed it many times, sometimes even without rain. All the best. John
Glad you enjoyed it John. Thanks for watching 🙂🙏
Hi. Noticed Ken squinting when driving into the sunlight. I always wear a cap with the brim dipped to mask out the sunlight along with flip up sun shades. That really works for me.
Thanks for the tip Michael, good idea 👍
Lakeside was a beautiful park up.
i was thinking, if this is February, then i do hope Carol's shoulder is better and/or been looked at. didnt realise the time span before, on the other vids. Have a good break and all the best from New Zealand. collin xxx
Yes, Carol’s shoulder is much better now, thanks Collin 🙂

Loved every video, thank you. Please don’t stay at home for too long. 💚
Beautiful spot! I don't think I could drive there! Your roads look more like our bicycle paths.🤣
Great videography!!
Hope your feeling better Carol. You might have a frozen shoulder, you might have strained it, that can take a while to get better. Go and see your Doctor. Love to you both. ❤
Thanks Jayne 🙂
Grateful for the videos & look forward to your next travels great series thank you really enjoy your trips..
Cheers Lee 🙂👍
I’d say being out for 14 days was great! Not a defeat in my opinion. It’s good you’re taking some time off for a bit. Rest up and I’ll see you again when you’re ready. Blessings, Carol n Ken. Mary
Thank you Mary 🙏
Tomato ketchup on a sausage and bacon roll? Disgraceful! Only mustard or HP sauce will do! 😉😋 Beautiful b-roll, Ken. This is the Lake District of my Swallows and Amazons childhood. A sheer delight! 🥰 Great series guys. Looking forward to the next one. 😘x
Carol is with you on the HP sauce ☺️ Glad you enjoyed what we showed of the Lakes. Take care 🙂👍
Seems more like natural end than being beaten. Looking forward to seeing your travels aboard sometime
Great video chaps 👍😀
Excellent content as usual. Thanks for sharing the memories.
You’re welcome Graham ☺️
Brilliant travelogue series, really enjoy your footage - the journeys, towns/villages and landscapes plus your awesome narration and conversations. Covid scuppered my travel plans to UK, it's been wonderful to have discovered your channel and I have watched 80% of your channels content living vicariously through your playlists. Thanks Carol and Ken.
