Trying to build up my home studio setup now. Your videos have been so much help. I figure my main mic will be an SM7-B but I would love to keep a few 58s in my toolkit.

Good choice! The SM57 is a great alternative to the SM58 if you will be recording mostly instruments rather than vocals.

We settled with 4 Shure MV7's for our podcast studio. Great mics for the price. We chose the dual interface MV7 for flexibility, but if I'm honest, we haven't used the USB interface on these yet.
Our first incarnation with the studio used Shure SM58's and it sounded fine.

Samson Q2U here for simple one-man podcasts and Zoom. Dynamic, both USB and XLR outputs, sounds very good with most voices. And just $69 MSRP. I use it with the foam pop sleeve and a shock mount to a simple desk arm.
When portable, I use the USB out and a desk stand. Easily carried and rugged. No interface needed as the PC USB supplies the power it needs. It has a headphone output built into the mic with a TRS jack. Very simple very easy. Plug n play with Win11.
For higher quality, studio-only use, I use an EV RE20. It works pretty well on a boom (out of frame) or desk arm (in frame). The RE20 is mostly for a fashion show. In A/B tests, most listeners can't identify the RE20 from the Q2U.
But there's about a $390 price diff. The Q2U is the workhorse.

Last year I picked up a budget USB cardioid microphone by Uhuru for about $75 CAD. Although I don't do any podcasting or any professional audio work that requires the use of my voice, I'm surprised at how great the sound quality of the mic is overall! It's great for playing games with friends, and I've even streamed with it a few times. The mic also came with a boom arm, pop filter, and a foam cover. So even if I want to upgrade my mic sometime, I'm sure I can still use those accessories on my new mic.
Great video overall as always :)

The Yeti, which I have had for 10 years at least, has absolutely NO isolation between the capsule and the base. If it's on your desk you will hear everything. If there is a hard drive (spinning type) on the desk, it will sound like a factory. If you put a cup down, it sounds like someone dropped a plank at construction site. The capsule is good but the overall design is stupidly and fatally flawed.

Great video, your work is really appreciated. I've started a few years ago with a Blue Yeti (pre Logitech), and now I'm on a Midiplus Studio 4 interface, an Audio-Technica AT2035, a desk arm and a K&M mic stand... plus a few XLR mics in between 🤷‍♂ Midiplus is a good enough brand in this part of the globe... I'm considering getting the Lewitt Connect 6 as my "endgame"... if that makes sense. Cheers.-

Question. I have, in my recordings, mouth smacking & a "razzle" in my voice (kinda if you start strangling yourself, and talk at same time). Which is pretty annoying... Have added lots of filters with different settings. But this might be a source-problem, aka: my voice? And not the mic itself? Not dehydrated or talking too much (more the opposite), eaten apples/tea to make mouth less dry. You got any advice for me to get rid of this? And if you wonder, I have a $100 USB, Studio microphone, condenser, with pop-filter and sponge cover. Not the best, but..

    • @AudioUniversity
      @AudioUniversity  Год назад +1

I’d recommend a condenser microphone (USB is ok). Whichever mic you choose, place it within a few inches of the person speaking if they have a weak voice. You may want a pop filter so you can get the mic closer without worrying about p-pops.

It was rebranded as a live performance mic and sales took off, making it an industry standard live microphone for many years since.
    SM(Studio Microphone)58.
Billy Idol's engineer, Mike Frondelli used the SM58 on much of his vocals.

You should take a look at the Earthworks Icon, Icon Pro, and the now cheaper Earthworks Ethos. Super clean and fast mics, not for every voice, but man I like the accurate response of them. The SR314 and SV33 are so so good, but probably out of most people's budgets, the latter more so than the former.

Informative video. It caught my eye because I own one of the mics in your thumbnail (RE20), and just bought a Yeti X.
I’m not a podcaster or RUclipsr yet, but I have an interest in voice over work. I selected the RE20 after trying both it and the SM7B in person at Sweetwater. I found the RE20 was a better fit with my voice; I recommend people try different mics if they can. I used the RE20 in making 50 or so hour-long recordings of newspaper stories, for a service for the hearing impaired.
I bought the Yeti X just this week, for my first attempt at a public-aimed RUclips video. Shooting it at my brother’s place, and it’s just not convenient to move my RE20 with shock mount and arm.

Thank you so much for your videos! I record computer training with a "green screen" setup, etc. I think my audio requirements are similar to a Podcaster. We want the mic off camera because I'm typing or waving my hands to describe a concept, etc. (I've hit a few microphones). It is also difficult if the mic is between me and the computer monitor. We have tested several setups. We had great sound from a dynamic like the SM58, but I would get a neck ache from trying to posture myself in a position for good sound (close to the mic) without causing problems for the monitor and camera. We tried a Yeti XLR and Samson CO2s as well. We are currently using the Azden SGM-3500L mounted above the camera, and about 24" to 36" away. I have not read or heard of others using a shotgun in this manner. I was wondering your thoughts and if you think we should be doing something different. The room is mostly treated with acoustic foam. We find each square makes it sound just a little better.
