  • In this episode of Giant Machines, we'll take a look at deadly giants lurking in the dark waters of the oceans. These massive engineering marvels make Captain Nemo's submarine look like a lifeboat.
The Triomphant-class submarine is a class of ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) designed and built by France. It forms the backbone of France's nuclear deterrent.
The Vanguard class is the largest submarine type ever constructed in the United Kingdom, and the third largest type of vessel in Royal Navy service. The Vanguard-class submarine is 492 feet (149.9 meters) long, with a beam of 42 feet (12.8 meters) and a draft of 39 feet (12 meters).
The Ohio class is the biggest submarines ever built for the US. This class consists of four cruise missile submarines and 14 ballistic missile submarines which carry almost half of America’s active strategic thermonuclear warheads.
Each of these $713 million Borei class submarines are powered by an OK-650 nuclear reactor, AEU steam turbine, a shaft, and a propeller. This class is the first in Russia to run on the pump jet propulsion
    system.
Although the characteristics of the Belgorod nuclear submarine are a well kept secret it is known that she was developed from an uncompleted submarine of Antey-class project 949A. The length of the submarine is increased from 505 ft (154) to 603 ft (184 meters) making the Belgorod the longest submarine in the world.

There's no room for error in sub design and operation. The ocean pressure constantly wants to crush them. A number of US & Soviet subs were lost to accidents. The US submarine, "The Thresher," is a potent example of a tragic loss. Unable to surface, it sadly sank deeper and deeper until it imploded at over 1,000 feet deep with 129 souls aboard. God Bless submariners.

I served on the USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN-641) Blue Crew from 1971-1975 after two years of training. She was one of the original "41 for Freedom" Polaris ships before undergoing a refit to Poseidon missiles in Newport News, VA. I made 5 120-day patrols to help keep America safe via nuclear deterrence. GO NAVY!
