Great review. I've owned two Mju ii cameras and I'm quite relieved to find that you had the same focus issues I did. The camera refused to focus on a person! I assumed it was me, but thanks to your honesty, I no longer feel like a complete failure.
I've always had a super tiny Minolta point & shoot on me for a few years now. The lens is crazy sharp and it never misses focus. In addition to that I typically have a Fuji X-T2 with the 23f2 (gasp! digital!) slung over my shoulder. It's a relatively compact and powerful daily carry.
Hey! I've got the mju i and now you have a mju too! ( ii :)) I've heard lot's of people have trouble with focus, I don't get it unless the unit is faulty. I've owned two mju i's and I've never had a problem with focus. Those early '90's P&S's have a more primitive focus system, you really need to lock on focus on the subject with a shutter half press, get the solid green focus confirmation light before shooting with a full shutter press, that's it. Well, it works for me anyway. Thanks for the vid!
My mom owned one of these cameras when I was a kid in the 90's it was great camera it took sharp pictures and it lasted well over a decade, definitely brings back memories.
Since you like the clamshell on the Stylus and you like oddball cameras, you definitely should look out for an Olympus Infinity Twin. This thing is a twin lens reflex point & shoot: there is a periscope mirror inside the film chamber that drops down to allow you to select between wide(ish) and telephoto modes. Two taking lenses on the front and weatherproof. While a bit big when compared to the Mju, it's a decent performer in my book.
the only point and shoot i got is a nikon zoom touch 500, not as pocketable lol normally why i stick to slrs plus i can shoot weird film stocks like orwo dp-31 at iso 6 😂 side note if you or jason want any rolls of it i will be happy to send a few to each of ya
I have the original Mju and the Mju Zoom. Love them both, but the original Mju is just such a joy to use. The Mju hardly ever misses focus and the Zoom misses a few more, but no more than any other compact I've used.
If you ever get the chance to play with a Fuji Natura Black f1.9 don’t pass it up!!! Everything on it is in Japanese so im not sure if I ever use it correctly but the photos that come from it are amazing
Oh hey, I got one of the earlier versions for $8 at a thrift store. One of my luckier finds. I appreciate that it has a good fill flash, great for slide film. Do I wish it had manual controls? Obviously, but for what I got it for, I'm not complaining at all. Anyways, back to draining my bank acount shooting slide film.
@@BadFlashes not at all. More money to blow on slide film. I bought a bunch of hard drives for a new nas today, and soon I'll buy a new GPU. After that though, I'm going to get the things I need to develop film at home, and that's when things will really get moving.
Funny enough I bought one of these Olumpus Styluses last year at a thrift store out in the middle of no where for a dollar, only for it to be one of my favorite point and shoots still to this day! There's like 4 or 5 different versions with all different specs, but nothing beats that clamshell style power switch on the front UGHH
I got rid of my Mju2 because it gradually became unpredictable with light leaks. I bought it brand new about 6 years ago so it had no previous owners. I did love the quality of the photos, but for the outrageous prices they're going for now for a piece of plastic... you could buy a Nikon F2 and a good lens for basically the same price. something that will most likely last you 20+ years. Saying that, my go-to point and shoot is the Mju1. glass isn't quite as good BUT they're half the price and I havent had any light leak issues with it yet
Super solid! It’s apples and oranges in comparison I know. But dang if you can find a Mju 2 for $10 and you get 5 or 6 years of great shots out of it then that’s amazing… but I wouldn’t pay full price personally
I've had a few of these over the years. (all have died) I love the camera, but wouldn't pay the average going rates for this reason.. $15 on the other hand.. lucky. On all but one of mine, one of the problems was similar to your hit rate issue. I've taken one apart before and underneath the shutter button is a little piece of plastic to keep the 'half press focus' from going all the way down to keep it functional. It'll often break or wears out from age. The camera will still shoot, but you won't really have an ability to focus properly. If I had to guess, I'd think this might be your problem.
Ill go out for you Kaleb! I just picked up a voigtlander Bessa R after seeing your video on it thank you for the valuable information you gave on that! One day ill have an M6 as long as you dont buy them all
Dumb fact I learned from my clothes historian sister - the little pocket on jeans is called a watch pocket but that's just the name of the type pocket design and placement. It was included as a space where you could keep coins, nuts, bolts, etc because they were work clothes. It's likely no one ever kept a pocket watch there until the modern era.
Love the videos, you don't get enough love --but, to mention, I Subscribe and get updates but cannot ever recall getting your videos in my feed --just saying. But I get all the videos from your boy, again and again --even one's I've watched. Not sure why this is, but you are not the only one --perhaps RUclips just has its favorites. Keep doing awesome things!
The only, and I mean ONLY thing I hate about the Mju ii is the tiny viewfinder optics. It's fumbly because of how you have to move around either your face or camera to get a clean full view of your framing.
i find that i have the same issue with my olympus zoom 130. the focus is very hit or miss. that's why i prefer shooting with the pentax espio 150 SL. gem of a camera
You should try out a Contax T! No missing focus unless you miss it yourself since its an aperture priority rangefinder camera 😉 Also tinier than the mju!
I got the same focus issue on my Mju II. Super simple compositions with a single person in the frame and the camera decides to focus on the background, why? Reliability aside, I'll still continue using it because its size is so ridiculous that I almost forget I have it on me.
I’ve shot roughly 30 rolls through my mju 2 and have maybe 5-10 pictures in total with missed focus, but I have the Zoom 70, don’t know if there is a difference!
Might be something wrong with your MJU II. I've had mine for about 8 years now and never had any real issues shooting people or other subjects. Also, it's a 90's cam 😀
Have the mju - i, and produces stunning images.. even as the flash is not working..bad flash!! (pun intended) . Focusing issue is same, so can't take too fast snaps, specifially with low iso films.
EDIT: My comment was for non-fixed lens versions. Sorry. I had one of these, but I got rid of it, reason: The light seals around the zoom elements will eventually erode away and at that point the camera is not repairable, really. You can still take great pics with it, however you will have a thin circle of light on your picture that intrudes in from the sides about 20% crop. Cool camera, but really hard to find one without that issue and prevent that from happening anyway. So, for anyone curious about buying one, keep that in mind before you drop a couple hundred bucks on it. Ebayers and such don't test for this.
Hey I have one of these! Or rather, my wife Sarah has one. She just uploaded a video to my channel showing it off. Please ignore her when she says stuff about me kidnapping her and locking her in my film cooler. All lies!
I ditched my Mju II after 3 rolls for the same reason as you do: my unit just won't focus when it's in a bad mood, even it's a still shot with subject right in the middle of the frame. I guess I wouldn't say it's as epic as Mewtwo, but as unstable as Mewtwo.🥲
Way over hyped. Owned all three of the MJU versions and a stylus zoom. Slow between shots and the meter will underexpose shots. It’s a cool clickbait camera gets likes on Instagram and RUclips
