I'm an SLR guy. The Nikon FM2 is my favorite camera I own -- compact body (about the same size/weight as a Leica M6), amazing lens selection (tons of vintage Nikon options + modern Voigtlander pancakes), great build quality (all mechanical + light meter), and 1/4000th top shutter speed. I also have a Leica R6.2 and it's great as well.
I prefer SLRs when using longer lenses and rangefinders with wider lenses (35mm and wider). SLRs allow for more critical focus when using longer lenses, while rangefinders provide a more environmental view which allows me to see subjects entering and exiting the scene. For an everyday carry camera, I prefer rangefinders for their compact form factor.
SLR are the kings of function but sometimes you just want a little rangefinder to tag along for the day. So every photographer can justify owning both.
For me: I prefer using SLRs for the convenience of framing, focusing (the ones I use have split-prism focusing), and lens selection, but I will be the first to say they are the gawkiest things to have hanging on your neck. Not to mention having any kind of camera like that seems to make people nervous, even when you're not taking photos.
@@thelonelytimbit in my experience, when it comes to weird cameras like that, people tend to be more intrigued than anxious. I've got a Mamiya Universal Press that gets a lot of looks and questions, usually people asking if they still make film for it 😂. You can probably tell from my name and avatar, I shoot a lot of Polaroid: that format always seems to tickle people to see.
Used to love SLR until I started using my Leica M4-P.. it is just much more easier to focus and compose.. plus shooting a RF in low light settings means that there won't be a fat mirror slap to ruin that shot.
An awesome thing about older film cameras is that /generally/ you can afford to own both Rangefinders and SLRs and use them as the mood/situation calls (well if you are a dumb butt like most of us....). Ofc the Leica are super pricey but there are still plenty of somewhat reasonably fixed lens rangefinders which I honestly think people should try out first before they buy an M camera and decide Rfs ain't for them. Use the same camera until it is an extension of your arm? Ain't nobody got the time for that, I use a different camera every day. Another win for Rangefinders is that /generally/ (at least for older lenses) they had the far better performing wider lenses (well anything wider than say ~50mm) because the lenses don't need to be retrofocal designed (no mirror means they can be closer to the film plane so they don't need special glass to adjust the focus to be further behind than it would be for their focal length). This is also why modern mirrorless lenses can be so much smaller/higher performing than dslr lenses of just a few years ago. I assume the Mamiya 6/7 glass is stupid sharp at least in part because of this. And well not having a mirror and a quieter shutter means you get less shake and thus better images at slower shutter speeds too especially if you got a leaf shutter. That said, being limited to not focusing very close (usually 0.7m irc) on RFs is indeed a huge bummer and a huge W for most SLR lenses. That and I think super fast aperture lenses are usually pretty inaccurate on rangefinders. With Rfs is you do need to keep an eye out to make sure your distance scale etc is matching your patch and your camera hasn't gone out of calibration. I have ruined at least some photos by buying a 'mint++ camera' only to realize the focus is off. Though ofc with slrs if the mirror/groundglass is not set properly you have an even more annoying problem. I do love my rangefinders (just shot a roll with the old Leica IIIf and my Bronica rf645 is arguably my most reliable and decorated camera), but I gotta say watching the image come into focus on a Hassy screen never gets old. >_
Still till this day, since 2015, I have the Olympus OM-1 as my only film camera. Never looked for another camera since it gets the job done. The results are phenomenal.
@@BadFlashes I hope you will like it! It’s not a camera for everyone, couple of friends of mine prefer a rangefinder and all have the m6. But as far as I know, it’s considered to be one of the popular SLR’s around. For me it’s perfect but to each their own of course.
Not a rangefinder person, mostly because all the lenses I have are SLR lenses in M42 mount. *But* I find rangefinders much better than SLRs for taking photos of moving objects. All my SLRs have the fresnel lens focusing circle in the viewfinder and I don't find that as accurate as a rangefinder, or a split prism focusing aid. I have a Zorki 4K, btw. That camera on its own is small, but the ever-ready case for it (which you have to use if you want a neck strap) adds some bulk to the body (and that's after I cut off the front cover, as unlike with similar looking Praktica cases, the Zorki case's front cover can't be detached). Also I find myself more caring about the feel of the camera than anything else, I have a Mamiya Sekor SLR, it's only 1/500s, the viewfinder needs cleaning, but it's beautifully built, the light meter still works and is very accurate, the winding lever is so smooth it makes you want to slow down. My Praktica is feature wise a better camera, but it doesn't feel nowhere near as dense. Also the winding lever is stiff, but relubricating the lever needs disassembly I'm not ready for.
@@BadFlashes Also a reason why I miss my Spotmatic. Also not in the best condition, it was plagued with issues (electronics died, shutter issues or light leaks), but again - an M42 mount camera that feels incredibly dense, works with every lens I have (which at the time was only an East German 50mm Pentacon lens, lol) and overall feels great to use. It was the ES Spotmatic, with aperture-priority mode, in black painted brass.
I really want to try a rangefinder. I am getting better, but I sometimes hunt too much trying to find focus with my SLR. It's made doing more street style stuff much more difficult then when I did it with my mirrorless digital camera.
Maybe I am weird but I personally find rangefinders way way easier to focus in low light and tbh easier to focus overall which is why I have been gravitating to them. Using the Contax rangefinder mount cameras (Kiev iia and Contax ii)
At this point you can go to any fleamarket anywhere and pick up some sort of range finder and some sort of SLR together for under 40 bucks or multiples of both. No point not having both.
I shoot rangefinder and SLR cameras. The Leica M6 is my favorite 35mm rangefinder and the Nikon F2 is my favorite 35mm SLR. The Fuji GW670 is my favorite 6x7cm medium format rangefinder and the Mamiya RB67 is my favorite 6x7cm medium format SLR. At one time, I also shot medium format TLR cameras, medium format folding cameras, and large format 4x5 inch view cameras.
I learned on an FM, and bought a N2000 when I was 10. I have an FM3a, but I don't use it as much because I like the light up metering of the FM2n I have. I've never had a rangefinder, but I can't imagine not having split image focusing.
Love the video!!! Also, I love your podcast. A while ago, you mentioned in your New York video that you interviewed gxace and David Imel. Are there plans to release that podcast? You 4 are some of my favs in youtube photography.
I just got gifed a canonet, I've been using the canon ae-1 from my pops. When I got my first 2 rolls from the canonet almost half my pictures were blurry xD i can only blame myself but focusing is definitely different.
For me, the right answer is simple, I like capable pro 35mm cameras like the Nikon f4, and the Canon 1N HS which can take my modern digital lenses. I like the plastic fantastic Nikon N75, which are so cheap there is no pain if you step on it, not to mention it is light as a feather. I like the old German TLR cameras (Rollei Rolleiflex, Zeiss Ikon Ikoflex) which give that fun inverted look down the chimney (I also have the prism finder) and also have the very satisfying shutter CLUNK. Well, I also need my Calumet 4x5 cameras, with a sheet of film the size of a slice of toast. Digital is fun too, but a roll of Lomo purple or some deliciously grainy Ilford Delta 3200 do not have digital analogs. Those are the ones I use the most, but I have others. So I guess the answer to "Which camera is right for you?" is the one I am using at the time, for me. For digital, it's Olympus for MFT {great for a steep hike}, Canon and Nikon full frame. The best camera is like the best tool. You don't saw with a hammer and you don't hammer with a saw. But a workman can grab a tool and make something nice with it. No reason to restrict the tool box to a single Philips head screwdriver. IMO-YMMV. Yes, but "What if someone was going to make a law where you can only have one camera!?" The answer is simple. Hunt him down, peel off his skin with a potato peeler, cover him with honey and stake him to the red ant hill. To gently dissuade legislation of that nature. ;-)
Star Wars references on point. Also I bought the bessa r cause of your videos great camera, although I think after owning it I’m more of a slr fan than a rangefinder, I just like the focusing prisms better on my slr than the ghost image lineup on rangefinders, but bessa r is still a great great camera!

I’m a longtime rangefinder shooter, and I have to admit that an SLR is superior to a rangefinder for virtually every given purpose. If I could only have one 35mm camera, it would be an SLR. But I love 35mm rangefinders. The simpler the better. My favorite is the Argus C3. No frame lines, no meter… I love how basic it is.

7:25, you should hear the stories of how the actors picked and sometimes argued over lightsabers at the prop table. It ranged from “idc” to “I’ll pay you $x.xx” to paying prop guys extra for custom stuff because continuity from a previous film wouldn’t allow the one they wanted. It’s pretty funny.

I have tried to love/like rangefinders & I have tried a lot of them, including Leica, but it just isn't happening. I feel so much better with my Olympus OM-1.
I really wanted to like rangefinders, but I just couldn't. I've got a couple, and while they aren't leica's (which I'm sure make the whole thing somehow more magical), they've been enough to convince me that I just don't get on with it. I like close focus detail shots, and I never quite trust the calibration. I've just had to accept that I'm an SLR kinda guy.
I just checked. it's a type K. it even came with a little chart explaining all the different focus screens for the f3. id send you a photo of it if I could @@BadFlashes
The answer to your question is obvious. SLR or Rangefinder? Get both of course. Shoot whichever kind of camera you feel like using on any particular day.
Correction time: Speak for yourself buddy. The M6 misses a part of the rangefinder assembly that causes flaring in certain situations and makes it harder to focus in low light. Most Ms before the M6 and the newer Ms and M6 don’t have that problem and can focus in very very low light. Rangefinders have also been used by journalists and street photographers for a thousand generations because once you get the hang of it they’re much faster and reliable for most people to focus with. I get that this is a preference thing but after having used many many SLRs and rangefinders friends and myself can get focus much more reliably with rangefinders than with SLRs. The second thing is that framing in-precision is camera dependent and again something the M6 is worse at than older Ms. I have to note that I don’t have experience with Voigtländer rangefinders so can’t say anything about their focusing or parallax correction. I personally use rangefinders because I can focus with them faster and more reliably, they’re less obtrusive than SLRs, quieter, and have much less shutter shake. Meaning on a good day I can reliably shoot handheld at 1/8th instead of the almost mandatory 1/60th of SLRs. I’ve even been able to get a perfectly sharp shot at 1 second once.
Sorry, SLR all the way, rangefinders are black magic or witchcraft or somesuch. Seriously though I like my viewfinders to be 100% coverage and so sharp it makes your teeth itch. :-D
TBH: the lack of a true viewfinder is something that annoys me about rangefinders, they are also more inaccurate. SLRs developed for a reason. I have a Mamiya Universal Press. Technically the Universal is both a press camera and a rangefinder. I don't really like it... Rangefinder framing are even more unnecessarily inaccurate and film SLRs are already inaccurate with their framing. SLRs were developed for a reason to deal with the inaccuracies of box, and rangefinder cameras. SLRs also deal with the problems of a viewback in keeping the camera light tight 100% of the time. In a modern world there is no reason to use a Rangefinder except as a fashion statement... I am not belittling you for using a Bessa either. Great looking camera, but really... There is no reason to have on except on a shelf like my Universal Press now :P Rangefinders don't have a wide viewfinder built in with frame lines, they also don't work very well with telephoto lenses beyond about 135mm so yeah.... I REALLY don't understand rangefinders personally, and I have one... But its your own choice, if you want to use something that sets you back at this point about 50years in camera development... Knock youtself out...
Quite liked your video, but gosh those star wars jokes were so annoying... Not every film enthusiast is a star wars fan, or even saw all those series you are talking about...

What, no coverage of TLRs? 😆
Nice, fun rundown ending with great advice (buy both).
Welll idk no room for it. Lol
I have tried to love/like rangefinders & I have tried a lot of them, including Leica, but it just isn't happening. I feel so much better with my Olympus OM-1.
the pink one
I like pink
I really wanted to like rangefinders, but I just couldn't. I've got a couple, and while they aren't leica's (which I'm sure make the whole thing somehow more magical), they've been enough to convince me that I just don't get on with it. I like close focus detail shots, and I never quite trust the calibration. I've just had to accept that I'm an SLR kinda guy.
And you know what… There is nothing wrong with that! 🚀🫶🏼
You are of of the most underrated photography RUclipsrs ever ❤
Also what’s the name of your lens bag?
Aw thanks!!! Also check my description 👍🏼🥳
It should be in there.
@@BadFlashes thanks dude
Awesome vid bruh! It’s rangefinder for me!
Good choice! 😜
I was thinking the exact topic today. You’re definitely on my walls fr
I know allllll
Nice video. I haven’t used any rangefinders. I have them just haven’t grabbed one, yet.
Your weekend task hahaha
SLR's simply because they have legendary zoom lenses but also who needs scale focusing when ya got autofocus and mid roll rewind 😳
Who needs autofocus 😆🤣
@@BadFlashes personally I'm Sony gang. it's nice being able to interchangeably use Minolta Af lenses between the A9 35mm and the A7 Mirrorless.
I put a split prism focus screen in my f3 and I get best of both worlds
Do you know the type it is?
I just checked. it's a type K. it even came with a little chart explaining all the different focus screens for the f3. id send you a photo of it if I could

Any plans on doing a video about the Kiev 4AM in the background?
Nice Video (Y)
Hahah no it’s not fun to use 😝
Started with SLR's before getting an m6 after watching your m6 vid, imo SLR's are more beginner friendly
✈️🔥🫶🏼🇺🇸🥳
Phantom Menace is the best prequel. Fight me
I won't ... someone else might hahahaha
I’ve never seen a Space Wars film, and now I don’t think I have to.
oh .... you dooooo
The answer to your question is obvious. SLR or Rangefinder? Get both of course. Shoot whichever kind of camera you feel like using on any particular day.
#preach!
Thank you for keeping it 100 for film.
hundo!
I just wish rangefinders were as accessible as SLR's, I keep finding great SLR's for under 100 bucks and wish it was the same all around :/
Yeah I totally get that for sure
Anybody tell ya you have too many cameras?
Uh huh, thought so.
And episode 4 A New Hope is the answer. 70s baby!
Haha no such thing as toooo much 😂
i want both🥺🥺
do it!
Love the amount of star wars references in this episode
Hahah a sick
This video is going to blow up faster than Keira Knightley’s career after her portrayal of Sabe in 1999s Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
F***K YAS ... you know the vibe
You never considered a TLR? Come on man!
well I do have one .... it's just not in this vid
good job !
Thanks!
Woah, you guys met David? How cool is that.
David’s great!!!!! One of the best out there. Keep watching because there’s a lot more David coming.
For me SLR 100% I just don’t get along with Rangefinder focusing.
Yeah I can understand it
Have you ever heard of Starwars? I feel like it's something you might enjoy.
😵💫😜😗
Correction time:
Speak for yourself buddy.
I’ve even been able to get a perfectly sharp shot at 1 second once.
what was the correction? Rangefinders are the best! lol 😝
@@BadFlashes Point taken ❤️
Team SLR til I die (or get rich enough to buy a Leica)
Hahaha bet
Which camera is right for me? All of them.
yes yes and 100000000% YAS
Episode 4. Obviously.
Wow lol
@badflashes you gotta start at the TRUE beginning. 1977 baby! 😂
Why choose??? Have both
I mean, that’s the real point to the video. Lol
TLR!
They are great 😊
Cha porkman outman geesa. Mee teesa rodda co pana pee choppa chawa.

Ahhhhh yay
This video was rough on someone who doesn’t care about the Star thingies. 😖
Well I guess that means you need to catch up lol
10:52 ... Yo have you always been filming yourself with anamorphic lenses? Is this old* news?
* Other than the video being 10 months old
I don’t remember shooting anamorphic on this episode lol
👌👌👍👍✌✌✌✌😊😊🌹🌹❤❤
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Sorry, SLR all the way, rangefinders are black magic or witchcraft or somesuch. Seriously though I like my viewfinders to be 100% coverage and so sharp it makes your teeth itch. :-D
I mean ... I tots get that 4 sho
Ryan Reynolds explaining cameras. Subscribed.
hahahah oh yeah ... ill take that 😜
TBH: the lack of a true viewfinder is something that annoys me about rangefinders, they are also more inaccurate.
There is no reason to have on except on a shelf like my Universal Press now :P
Rangefinders don't have a wide viewfinder built in with frame lines, they also don't work very well with telephoto lenses beyond about 135mm so yeah.... I REALLY don't understand rangefinders personally, and I have one...
But its your own choice, if you want to use something that sets you back at this point about 50years in camera development... Knock youtself out...
Haha I guess I’m an old soul
Quite liked your video, but gosh those star wars jokes were so annoying... Not every film enthusiast is a star wars fan, or even saw all those series you are talking about...
I’m glad you enjoy the videos but Some people like references to Star Wars some would rather it be Star Trek … the video I make are for me and hopefully someone likes them… but I know not every reference will be enjoyable to all.
Thanks for tuning in tho! :)
69th like! Nice
🎉 🥰
Uhhhhh marry me?
Ahhhh shit … little too late yo sorrry 😂
I don’t think this voice is suitable for children, it’s too seductive!
Gonna talk me into buying another camera…
