    Thanks for another great ride Chuck. The car her character dies in along with Cary Grant's character in Topper was a custom bodied Buick.

    A bit crunchy with the gears, but that's probably due to a lack of experience with that particular gearbox and clutch brake. On a Phantom you don't really need to change down on corners. Bags of torque low down.

    I find town cars strange. If I were a rich person a long time ago, I wouldn't have been able to resist driving these big, powerful machines myself.

    Thanks for another great video Chuck. Does him twisting the lady around have something mechanically related to the hood latch or is that just some kind of superstitious tradition?

    • @RideswithChuck
      @RideswithChuck  10 лет назад

      I'm not sure. Good question.

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 10 лет назад +1

      Take a look at the shape of the lady and her flowing cape/wings. If you put up the hood without turning her around you'll knock her off her pedestal, and chip the paint in the hood in the process.

    I like to know what did they do for a heater in those days,you guys looked cold

    • @RideswithChuck
      @RideswithChuck  10 лет назад

      I don't remember there being a heater in this car. We were comfortable though.

    • @dlwatib
      @dlwatib 10 лет назад

      In the days before car heaters they used lap blankets (which they called lap robes). There is a robe rod across the back of the front seat which you can see below the limousine window in the video at 5:50. They used to hang the folded robe over the robe rod when not in use. Usually cars had robe cords instead of robe rods like this Rolls.
      Cars continued to have robe cords even as late as the 1950s, though by that time there were very few robes actually in use because most cars had heaters. I actually remember a vestigial cord/strap on the backs of Cadillac seats as late as the 1960s, but by that time they didn't go all the way across because the front seats were notchback, so they would have been useless to hold a full sized lap robe.

      +elizabeth v cherry These cars do not need a heater. The firewall is aluminium and the engine heat comes through into the passenger compartment. With the windows closed there is adequate heat for the passengers, even in the winter. On my vintage RR I leave my window open to keep cool.

    He needs to double clutch this car so the gears don't grind.

    Any idea why RR went from OHV at that time to F-head until they switched back with the V8? Also, you should have (if possible with copyrights the way they are) played Celluloid Heroes by the Kinks :)

      +William B. The Overhead valve engine was patented by David Buick in 1902 and GM didn't let rivals use it.

      The small horsepower 20, 20/25 and 25/30, large horsepower Phantom 1, 2 and V12 Phantom 3 all had twin overhead valve heads.

    Is this one of the Springfield US built Rolls before they changed to 6 volt systems and 3 speed trans?

    • @arburo1

      This is a Springfield Phantom. It has twin coil ignition whereas the Derby Phantoms had one coil and one magneto. The engine is also reversed left to right to allow space for the steering on the 'wrong' side. RR never built Derby or Springfield cars with anything other than 12 Volt electrics. The Springfield Phantom I was the last made in the USA. Some Derby Phantom II's were built for the USA market. These had serial numbers starting with an A.

      @@arburo1 Very interesting, I wish I could find out just out who wrote about the alleged 6 volt 3 speed gearbox thing, I just checked "Kings of the Road" by Ken W. Purdy and all he states is that only a few hundred were made in Springfield between '21 and'31 not surviving the depression.

    • @arburo1
      @arburo1 3 года назад

      @@adoreslaurel RR made 1703 Springfield Ghosts, 1921 - 1926, and 1241 Springfield Phantom I's, 1926 - 1931. It's all documented in RR Motor cars by Bird and Hallows. 1964. More than a few hundred!

      Dear Chuck, I live on Long Island NY and been attending car shows for over 30 years. The best is a AACA meet held at Westbury Gardens on the first Sunday in June. Over the years I have seen a Hudson Italia and a Kasier Darrin. About 450 cars exhibit. You may consider filming this meet. Westbury Gardens is a beautiful Gold Coast estate that once belonged to the Phipps family, and is the subject of a wonderful coffee table book Halcyon Years........thx for answering my email

      I went for a ride in a Kaiser Darrin a few years ago. I will put that video up one of these days. I'll keep your AACA show in mind but it is a bit of a trek for my budget,,, which is none existent.
