    One of the most unsettling things I witnessed in dying light 1, was during nightmare mode at night, during a storm. I had just escaped pursuit by three of the volatiles (one was an alpha) I was hiding in a pharmacy with very little health and waiting to get more from my medkits. This random biter comes to the door of the building, straight up stands there staring at me, and WAVES at me, before walking away. What I find WILD is how Techland already had lots of zombie models in the 2020 build of the game that can be seen in this famous 25 minutes demo and while they weren't as good as the OG ones they were miles better than the current ones and seemed to interact much better with the world lightning. I really don't get it why did they rework all NPC models and most of the animations between 2020 and 2022. Some of them look more detailed now but I don't think it was worth the effort tbh. It feels like they decided to completely change the artstyle in the middle of the development which is mind boggling to me. After over a year from premiere of DL2 I just believe that something went horribly wrong during the making fo this game. I have heard from some people who had an insight into DL2 development that they were really surprised that the game came out somewhat playable in 2022. If they will ever make DL3 I hope they will stick to the DL1 as close as possible. I supported most of the gameplay changes in the DL2 before the release but now it's pretty clear that most of them were a mistake.

Useful cause the volatiles can't see the normal flashlight.

I've been a huge fan of Dying Light for years, but I haven't made the leap over to DL 2 because of all the issues that still seem to plague the game. I've considered buying the game a few times recently since I've got an Xbox series S now, but it seems like the game still has some serious issues no matter which platform it's being played on. I think there might be something missing on a fundamental level that can't be patched out or "fixed," it's hard to say exactly what that might be. I'm looking forward to Dead Island 2 honestly, that looks like it has the potential to be a truly amazing experience.

      @@80skidgrownup00 Yeah, I guess we'll find out soon enough. I saw a video with the devs talking about the mutilation system they're implementing and it looks awesome. Your attacks will cause specific damage based on the type of weapon you're using and there are also different visuals for each level of damage you inflict upon the zombies. It seems to start off with superficial damage in some cases with your weapon cutting through clothes and outer flesh, but the more you attack, the more you end up tearing into a zombie's body and getting beyond the bones and into his guts etc. I'm not sure if I explained it properly, but it definitely looks super cool. The weapon variety is looking good as well and we'll have access to guns which is a plus in my book. The visuals look pretty good to me from what I've seen so far, but it's hard to say what the overall style will mean for the experience. They're not going to have to worry as much about the sort of direct comparisons that naturally arose between DL1 and DL2, so that makes things a little easier for them in terms of criticism I guess. All in all I'd say that Dead Island 2 looks very promising, but we'll just have to wait and see to know for sure.

    I think the 2nd game really departed from the zombie love letter idea. Despite the story, the biggest strength of Dying Light is its seamless blending of all these legendary zombie variants into one place. There’s a George Romero mural in the Slums. The environment itself was considered to provide fuel for set pieces that were intended to be love letters to different parts of zombie media. Like how at one point in the slums you can find the bus from 28 days later full of fresh virals. It’s a random and tense encounter you can stumble upon and if you know you know.
    The second game seemed to abandon this part of the game. The filled the world with just purely the middling story. Without that secondary goal of paying homage to their roots there was less motivation to build out the world. You’d think they’d focus on story but they gutted all the story last minute.

    I'm actually somewhat happy about the new looks. Remember this. Dl2 is 10 years after the outbreak, not a month. The skin for example of the volatile shows a evolution track of the volatile. The normal volatile from the first had minor and thin gray skin. The alpha or evolved volatile developed more gray skin and thicker/harder skin to protect it. It's makes perfect sense 10 years later, a volatile would be incased in this natural armor. Things like the goons stop looking human the more the virus has gone rampant as it had more time to evolve. The biters are going to look decayed because they roamed the streets for a very long time in the elements. Etc. Etc.

    Hi. I was a Technical Animator on the first game and the 2nd game (Rev1 we called it internally before the Rev2 "reboot" and my departure). Ignore my username, my son is big fan of South Park.
    I love many of the points you raised here, they're points many staff would raise to various other discipline, but sadly nothing would ever come from it. We had a relatively smooth-ish dev cycle on DL1 but sadly Part 2 was the complete opposite. We suffered from 2 internal reboots (one of which was due to outside-studio politics with a writer) and the 2nd was due to pressures to ship. A LOT of content had to be cut, optimizations were skipped over and there was many "shortcuts" and "smoke and mirror" methods applied to the core systems, which me, as a Technology team member, really frankly pissed me off. A lot of the stuff we had from Rev1 is only just making its way into public branch (things like animation systems, visual nuances and character design). I think this game, had we been given another year or two, could've been a true fan favourite and live up to that first game we made.
    It was a stressful project was Part 2, more-so than most. I am very proud how team came together and made it as best they could with what resources and support they had, inside and out. I hope future entry take note on Part 2 development and don't suffer another terrible launch in my view. stay safe all. widzenia

      In dl2 virals are rarely fresh, they are usually old infected that haven't been weakened by UV over the years, biters have been under the sun for too long and the virus is weak. While virals have seeked shelter every day and the virus prospered in them, virals eventually turn into volatiles (you can see this by older virals having gray skin, little body fat and more muscular physique than biters and fresh virals), unless something causes them to mutate into something else before they complete their volatile transformation. Thats why screamers and demolishers have a split jaw like a volatile, they were viral transforming into a volatile but the virus mutated to take a different path
      Edit: Virus in dl2 is different from the original, same base, improved and changed by the GRE. So method how infected form and mutate is different. In darkness a infected never becomes a biter but goes from viral to volatile, unless it derails into anything else depending on the environment and mutations. While in dl1 they became biters 100% unless mutated. Volatiles were made in nests instead of turning into one over the years. UV also prevents a person from turning unlike with the original variant. Few minutes of darkness turns a normal person so UV lights aren't only to keep you safe from infected but to keep you human. thank you for this video it summed up all my thoughts on DL2 exactly if felt really weird coming back to the game a few months after me and 2 of my friends played DL1 and the following and the DLCs again all the way through and that game just felt so alive like I remember so many areas and little stories and stuff that was just told with the environment and those minute details really add up to the experience I can vividly remember most locations and a ton of times where me and my friends just went to town on zombies blasting away I thought DL2 would be just a story expansion on DL1 but oh boy was I surprised, no to say it isn't fun but definitely not as fun and alive as DL1 those zombies were something else I tell you the dismemberment and little things are perfect we even bought DL1 but DL2 just wasn't worth the gamble I looking at it Dl1 was such a good game I knew we were getting a lot of stuff for our money DL2 should of been a reskin with extra content and a different story except for a whole visual overhaul with all the elements like animations and everything.

    They could just, yknow, copy the code from the original game and just import it into DL2... That would solve the whole not falling stuff and the gore mechanics

    • @snakecof1850
      @snakecof1850 Год назад +2

      unfortunately its not that easy, for some goddaam reason techland made a new engine from dl2 (e3 used dl1 engine btw) which means the old physics system cant just be imported, they would need to basically rewrite a big part of the engine to make it work.

      @Snakecof true, but as long as the coding language is the same, all they'd need to do is tweak it to work with the current engine. Most of the variables should be the same if not very similar.
      Plus programmers have their own way of coding, a bit like how everyone's got a different finger print, so the new engine would most likely follow the same logic as the previous

    Honestly DL1 was just more fun. Better environments, encounters, weapons(guns), just felt more interesting to play through. I still have fun with DL2, but it almost feels like it should have been the first in the series with how much it lags behind DL1.

    The first game felt 'buggy' at first because zombies were falling over on tiny ledges, but then as you got used to it, it became part of the game, hysterical, part of the charm. You started to realize the physics engine, and the biters ragdolling all over the place, was an amazing part of the game, especially when the runners/climbers/jumpers show up out of nowhere and put the fear of god in you.

    It's weird. I published a very simple 2D game and am already working on a new one. I already am trying to work on stuff that looks and plays a lot better than the first. So I don't get why sequels have a habit of just being inferior to the first. It might just be that some of the original guys who worked on the physics system just left, and the newer devs weren't able to replicate it.

    Everybody keeps forgetting that dl2 is literly 15 years later, of course the zombies are gonna look worse that's a lot of time for people to get infected, turn, and the body to decompose. Zombies decompose, you can see veins in the dl1 zombies and bruises cause they got attacked and turned recently. The wounds still look fresh cause they turned maybe less than a week before you saw the zombies. Why does everyone seem to not keep that in mind?

    • @ARStudios2000
      @ARStudios2000 Год назад +1

I know Techland came up with this silly lore for DL2, but there's no way all of the zombies would have survived 15 years. Also where are all of the newly turned? And anyway, my issue is more about how they drastically changed the art style from the original, which is crazy to me

      I'm not forgetting that, of course their appearance would have changed. However they could have conveyed it in a more realistic way. It isn't just the zombies that look bad, the whole art style is nothing like the original and for that reason feels like a different game entirely.

    The art style is down to personal preference, I really don't mind how they look in DL2. Only issue I have with the art design is the Virals. It's quickly established that virals are newly infected who still have greater control over their motor functions, and that they slow down over time and become Biters. In DL1 you can see that, Virals look fresher, their wounds and blood are a brighter red compared to the darker dried-out looking biters, they even stop and cower sometimes when hit as if there's still some shred of humanity left. In DL2 they're identical to the biters in appearance.
    But the physics of the game, and infected behaviour is a far bigger issue. The zombies looking up at you, or swiping at the air when you were out of reach was such a small detail that did so much for the atmosphere. Zombie behavior in DL2 feels so scripted, biters always launch into the same grab attack, interupting whatever you're doing, virals do the same leaping attack with bullshit tracking, so you'll be watching the same small pool of animations over and over again. It's a real shame, because there's some great improvements to combat in DL2 that are overshadowed by bad design.

    I love the lore behind dying light and although I have not played DL2 ik that vitals in the first game will use team tactics.for example if the player is being swarmed with biters the virals will hide behind them till they have an opening. It was such a good game.

    My biggest issue with DL2 is definitely the physics of it all. Just like you pointed out with zombies in DL2 basically being immune to falling, the first time I played DL I was so impressed when a zombie would just wander off a ledge, or stumble over a small curb, and then my first time on DL2 I was on a roof and it took so much effort to knock a zombie down off that ledge, and when I did, their body would fall a few feet before they would ragdoll, and it just looked so bad and half baked, literally made me reinstall and just start playing DL1 again.
