The G14 is thinner, lighter and better looking. What do you guys think?
No replaceable RAM, bo!
The thinner is nicer. But not sure if I really like the look of this new style they are going for. I would have to see it in person. Also I have a question. For the usb c one is thunder bolt 4 and the other is usb C 4. Do they both accept power delivery? And if so how much do they accept?
Why would anyone need 3k on a 14in?!!!!!!????????
@@MrSaljstnWhy not my unfriend?
amazing, but which do you think is better, Lenovo Legion Slim 5 14 (also OLED) or the new Asus G14?
4:20 "Don't let the speaker grill fool you" I thought you were going to say "they both still suck" lol. Speakers are something that windows laptops seem to never be able to get right for some reason. These do sound much improved and looks much better compared to older models 🎉 thx for the coverage. Looking forward to more!
reliability has always been an issue with these things. Had one and it broke on me; many people online also had that issue. These are literal unicorns, but quality control and issues plagues these machines. I took it to a repair shop and they even said this is the most common laptop that comes in for problems. If you get lucky; these things are incredible!
Also, just really weird firmware issues too. I connected my 2022 version to a 4K TV and it completely disabled the use of the USB C ports. Only fix was to remove the actual battery and reconnect it. Wtf, Asus?
True, that’s why I went Lenovo way
I've had a 1st gen for about 3 years now and that's got its quirks too (GPU waking after sleep, USB-C charging stupidity etc.). Never had much luck with battery life either. Pretty sure I won't fuck around with gaming laptops any longer since I now have a proper PC.
Dell XPS is way more better in terms of everything, and it last for 9 years so yeah
@@sowonkunbetter except for price, performance, ports, etc…. The dell has its own issues with reliability
I just bought the G16 2023 one , 2 days ago. I love it so far. It has the i7 and 1TB, It had the Nvidia card which I like. I hope it will last 4 years and then I'll run Linux once I get something with 32gb of ram. This is my first ASUS product...I think they're doing things like no one else. Can't wait for what the future holds!
if I am not mistaken, 2023 model has replaceable ram.
The new must more much more expensive, so you didnt miss anything 😎
i just bought it for creating videos and playing games like 7 Days to Die. should rung smooth on here. my son and i play nintendo switch mostly,,,so i have games on therre too

A 16 inch laptop with soldered ram is an insult.
Mathew, i just commented to Dave how beautiful i think this looks. I think the white when it becomes available is a designers dream, if they love minimalistic designs. I know i love it.
Hey Matt great video! Do you know when retail models will be available?
I cant wait for these to drop! do you when they will be in stores exactly?
Will always signal boost big, thin and light laptops WITHOUT a numberpad. This looks awesome and I hope other manufacturers go this route or at least offer the option this year.
yea cuz numpad is so useful when youre.... umm... well.. yeaaaa no
Huh?
Thank you for a nice review! What's the release date?
the new design is so good
but i wanted a all white color instead of silver
I currently own a g15 2022 model and a year ago june 2023 the screen had many coloured lines appear on it . I was really worried and took it too the service center . Because it was inside the warranty period they changed the screen for free . When i asked for why the screen suddenly had this problem , he said that the most replaced part in these laptops are the screen . So i am worried about the new designs . They are much thinner (which means less air enters ) , side vent holes have been taken away . These are really bad descisions when it comes to gaming laptops
I don’t like the slash on the lid but I need to see it in person.
That G14 is a gorgeous device, and the improvement in the speakers is really impressive.
Thank you for talking like a normal and calm person. ❤
lol you’re welcome
I'm so hyped for the new G14 but as every gen releases, prices get higher and higher. The OLED screens looks so good, but I worry about screen burn in for those long gaming sessions or for school work. And ive always admired the g14 for trying to break boundaries as a 14 inch gaming laptop, but not being too expensive for a laptop that fits so much in such a small form factor. But ever since the 2022 gen, the price is too expensive, might just wait for prices too fall
Why would anyone need 3k on a 14in?!!!!!!????????
Now, I regret buying G14 last year.
Don't even worry about burn in. You won't cause any sort of burn in at all when using it for school or gaming. You could leave it on for 24 hours straight and be fine. There might be image retention, but that usually goes away when you turn it off and back on again, or if you do a pixel refresh.
@@Mike-pd6npWhy are you so sure?
@DarkHill43 because there have numerous tests and first hand accounts from people who have used them daily for years. Normal use will not cause burn in. At most, it'll cause image retention. RTINGS is doing an oled burn in test where they run a bunch of oleds 24/7 to test burn in, and even then, it takes a loooooong time to see any sort of effect.
Due to the aspect ratio - will some games now have to run with black bars on the new version?
Great courage Matt. Thank you.
Will the G14 finally support USB-C pass through charging?
Idk the G14 was already thin enough and IMO when the Anime Matrix was switched off it looked cool whereas this new led stripe looks like it was added out of necessity to just do something with the chassis design. I have the 2022 model (mostly thanks to your videos on it) and IMO the feel of the chassis is so great. After using MacBooks for more than 10 years the aluminium body doesn't feel that exciting anymore.
2022 G14 is made of magnesium not plastic as some people often describe it. Thats why aluminium does not feel that different. I love the magnesium on 2022 G14. It only has one problem, its fragile on the corners where the screws are sitting....some have recognized small cracks after a while.
when are the retail models dropping?
This thing looks awesome, I watched this when you released the video and I’ve been concerned about vram. How are they not concerned about the 3k resolution in this thing? The 4060 is best at 1080p and 2k already pushes it. Is that not a concern?
What a beautiful compact laptop, can’t wait for the released
Any idea on when will the retail version come out?
These are BEAUTIFUL, damn near my perfect laptop. I love how much they cleaned up the design and gave them that minimal "macboook" look. If these could live up to the same battery life as the 2023 model, then I dont think I could be happier with these besides a future model having something like a qd oled display.
They should have better battery life due to reduced idle & low requirement energy consumption in the CPU as compared to last gen. Pretty much the only major difference in this generation & last generation intel cpus, besides igpus & ai chips
@@charmilli0n wouldn't the OLED panels suck more energy ? Besides the 2023 model was worse in battery usage compared to 2022 model.
@@Gauravmann no, afaik, oled panels are more efficient thanks to the ability to turn pixels completely off when displaying black.
Great Review Matt, this laptop the perfect balance between a MacBook Pro for creators & a massive chunky, dedicated gaming laptop for hardcore gamers. This falls bang in the middle & still looks stylish.
Love to see a comparison between the G16 and the Macbook Pro speakers
But 400 nits is not hdr. Macbook has 600 nits and can go above 1000 nits. Mobile phones and tv, too.
I love the improved speakers and the nicer screen on it, the glossy OLED instead of the the matte LCD with the cheap feeling plastic frame around it is certainly a step up aesthetically.... not sure if I'd say the same thing about the exterior design though. Of course its all subjective, but I did love the older design, feel like it treaded the correct line between looking sleek (unlike most other gaming laptops) while not being too bland and boring, meaning it stood out compared to macbooks, zenbooks, dells, HPs, etc. This feels like it just went all in on making yet another 'bland' all metal laptop. Im sure the material quality is improved but it feels like it slightly lost its soul with the redesign
(also, sidenote, but the gpu downgrade is crazy, going from potentially having a 4090 w/ vapour chamber cooling to a 4070 at only 70W is a massive reduction in performance, even if the old chassis could never fully handle the 125W 4090)
The 4070 is at 90 watts
they made the right decision. It looks so much better. It's thinner/lighter, and will come in configurations that most people buy. Maybe 1% bought the 4080/4090 versions. I was never fan of the raised hinge design
I feel the opposite, this is a Macbook alternative design and it appeals to people who would typically be buying Macbooks otherwise.
Been using the 1st gen G15 (4900HS and 2060) since 2020, pretty happy with it.. over the years I upgraded the ram, added more storage.. changed the battery a couple of months ago, i really abuse the battery.. haven't really had any issues with the laptop, except for some quirks on Linux, and I'm guessing thats mostly due to Nvidia and Wayland.. might just upgrade to the G16 this year
I snagged a 2023 G16(i9-13900H, RTX4060) for CA$1700 from Black Friday and I have to say this made feel like I should've waited a month longer for this sneak peak lol. That being said tho I'm really happy with my 2023 G16 the screen is 1440p, 240Hz, great color accuracy and upgradeable SSD and 1 RAM slot for future upgrade heck even the speaker was already better. This is a great step in the right direction for the Zephyrus line for sure!
It'll be interesting to see if they manage to keep cool under load.
I have the 2022 version of g14 but i have questions about Thermals and performance as the older models tend to get hotter when u push it. They are following the design philosophy of Razer in my opinion but looks more premium. And will it be worth the price paying for that will be a good question to ask.
Ok, when the proper review of retail units will be ready? G16 should be ready at the end of January if I am not mistaken? And g14 one month after?
Im 6 minutes into the Video and the comparisons so far have all been to the 2 year old 2022 model. I sure hope the relevant comparison to the 2023 model are coming soon cause display, speakers etc were also improved in the 2023 model.
I've been hyped for this one!! I plan to buy a G14 for college soon, so I'll have to see how sales go with this or last year's model. Super pleased with this year's design though, I like how there's a black model!
hm a little sad that the fingerprint scanner was removed, I didn't see that coming
aw and the soldered ram is sad
And wasn't expecting the switch to OLED displays! I wonder how it compares to the mini-LED it used before.
Also, so glad to hear the thermals and fan noise have massively improved!!
How reliable is soldered ram these days? I know what seems like back in the day, that was a sure fire failure on laptops within a year and half maybe 2
Something im super stoked about is the open lod not being a kickstand, its more closer to a razer/dell build design. Definitely stoked to see benchmarks on g14 models!
are both of these laptops fully built with cnc aluminum instead of plastic and magnesium?
you mentioned the fan noise is a lot less - I have both the 2023 g14 (4060) and the 2023 blade 14 (4070), and the fan noise between the two is hugely different. The blade is leagues quieter and cooler, despite having the more powerful GPU. Would you be able to compare the fan noise to the 2023 blade 14 (under load)?
What do you think about processors, I really like g14 but can that processor compete with a new intel chip?
Does the right side USB-C port on the G14 accept USB Power Delivery?
Matthew, does the new zephyrus series laptop have usb4 240w charging standards supported? I bought a zephyrus duo 16 2022 and Asus promised they will roll out official bios to support usb4 240w but so far no news yet
Wish to have Mini LED screen option for both models, regarding RAM, it is just way for Asus to make customers pay more for higher configuration models. Design is great!
@MathewMoniz what outfit you are wearing in this video? It looks cool
So good to see PCs finally going for aesthetics.
Improved displays and speakers, new design that looks really good. Let's see how they perform.
Nope. This thing is not even HDR.
@@steffdia7080who cares about hdr lmao
Uhh practically the same processor and GPU capped at 4070, I don't see any reasons for holding my breath. Just waiting for discounts on 23 model once this launches.
does g14 is going come with intel ultra processors and type c charging with gan chargers ??
yup i think its finally time to upgrade from my 2020 G14, as long as they do not overheat i am down! they look soo good
I wouldnt think about upgrading my 2022 version😂 Love it too much and performance gap isn't big enough
@@g.eberling8700 I have 1660 ti, no dlss is pain
Hopefully flow x16 will stick with ryzen AMD cpu...more efficient for thin and light
On the G16 I notice that the 4080 and 4090 both have a TGP of 115. Will there be a performance difference that justifies the cost? How will this compare to Razer 16 4080 and 4090?
I like how thin the new one is but I like the matte display on the older model
The m16 2024 ... damn its gonna be absolutly amazing. depending on how they do their thing i might chose the samsung gb4
I say, the Legion slim series finally has a rival design wise. Lets see if they can keep up with the Legions in terms of performance.
This G14 2024 looks exciting though. I'm intrigued. I have the Zephyrus G14 2023. I'm about to do a review about it but its kinda late for it
Do the review.
Actual consumer reviews are always helpful man. I have the first gen 21 G14 and as a long term user it's riddled with issues like drivers, black screens, not starting up, or battery life suddenly reducing to just 2 hours. If it was not for the super helpful reddit community I would have cried on wasting so much on this.
How is the 23 model holding up ? I am planning to buy it at discount once the 24 drops.
@@Gauravmannstrange, but I don't have so much issues with my 2021 g14. It works great, even on Ubuntu/Fedora and Windows 10 (still didn't updated to w11, cause it's garbage)
Hi mathew
Wanna know are the speakers better than MacBook Pro 16
Reason I’m asking coz I’m looking to buy a windows laptop with good speakers as I haven’t used a MacBook.
Would be helpful if you have any reference.
Thanks
And as usual like you tech videos
im curious how high Your voice can go when You exited LOL ;)
Those are gorgeous! They really stepped up the design this year.
With the 2023 models, the G14 was the most instereting, but now the G16 seems to be the one to get.
A laptop that weights 1.9kg with a 4060/70, 90whr battery and 2 nvme slots is pretty dope. Also the fact that Asus is one of the few manufactures that make a 16in laptop without a numpad, so its got a centered keyboard/mouse (Awesome).
However, OLED? Really? I hope they still make it with a IPS or the Mini-Led from last year. Nothing wrong with OLED, but its just another thing that will go wrong faster that it should.
Go wrong faster then it should and cost more than it should considering for example my use case where I use my laptop 80% of the time connected to an external monitor... Why would I have to pay extra for an OLED? Even if I'm not using external screen I still wouldn't mind a classic IPS. Meh... Also the soldered ram is a bummer, they should've shipped it with 16gb soldered and 1 ram slot available. Idk... depends on the price, if it will be fair for Europe i might consider it but that's another area where they failed. G14 2023 was 1300$ in the US while >2000 EUR in Europe. Hope they will fix this.
There will be an IPS panel option
@@EnzoFoove are you sure about IPS option?
@@BentoMMYup, there will be non-OLED screen options available
@@EnzoFoove For G16 only?
Can screen on G16 open 180° or is it limited now?
Nice design but I think I would have preferred the 2023 design on the G14 with upgraded CPU/GPU, a mini LED display on lower end models and the black colorway for US consumers.
Nice new refreshed model. Personally, I dont mind solder ram, as long its 32 gb in base model and priced reasonably.
I don't think it's 32gb in the base model since it says up to 32 gb
It's not. 32gb will be rare and probably paired mostly with 4080 instead of 4060... sucks
base model has 16 lmao
changing materials in 2024, does that indicate the previous model was not good enough?
Thinner 👏 ≠ 👏higher 👏 quality 👏
Why would asus lose its own sight on their product identity? All i see here compared to 2023 is a potential burn in oled display with lower brightness compared to the mini led version of the 2023 model, a capped option of gpus since you can only get up to a 4070, they removed the vapor chamber, made it even thinner (worse temps respectively to 2023), removed their original animematrix idea and decided to put a tacky 50% of the new "X" twitter logo single color led strip, and i could keep going. Only positive thing here is that the 2023 models (which you didn't mention in this video for your convenience in making the 2024 version sound better compared to 2022) will get cheaper. Good video anyways
Wb the battery life with Intel processor? I want to buy
Hoping for a 2024 flow lineup this year
any idea about Flow 16 2024?
When you receive the whole retail model, kindly include information about battery life and performance in your review.
A quick question about g16, is there an option to lower the refresh rate from 240hz to 120hz to get longer battery life? as I will not be using 240hz while I'm not gaming, but also I can't use 60hz because it feels dated to go back on 60hz.
Will do And yes they have dynamic refresh rates so you can lower it to save battery life.

Is the battery life improved and also is the armory crate software buggy because I really like the g14 and I want to see if it going to be better than the razer blade but with a lowe price (and yes in my opinion i think the razer blade 14 is better but the g14 looks better this year)

Did they discontinue Zephrus M16 model?
You compared the Keyboard on new models with the 2022 instead of the 2023. Because the keys on the 2023 are white not 'yellow' as on the 2022. So that 'issue' was already solved in the previous version. I like the overall design on the new models better, but still prefer the all white colour of the old models, and think its one of the best looking laptops I have ever seen. I don't know how I feel about silver/white combo.
Yo Matt tell Asus to tighten up them hinges on the screens. They wobbly af! 😂. Design looks great though.
Yes, but how is the cooling? The 2022 model had good ventilation and could reach temperatures close to 100°C (if we don't consider the fact that hot air was expelled onto the screen near the connector, causing it to expand and display glitches over time). Here, I don't see any intake or exhaust of air except underneath the computer.

I love to see this. The design is much more like a razer blade and I like it. But I kinda expect it to start at 2000 Euros.
That G16 looks nice, but the power limit on the GPU for the 4090 model is not for me. However, this is a nice laptop.
7:40 the problem I have with this is that even if the 4080 is power limited, it crucially has 12gb of vram VS 8gb on the 4070. I have the 4080 g14 and that extra vram is the main reason I bought it. 8gb of vram for a 1600p display, let alone 1800p is definitely going to struggle in modern games without using aggressive dlss and lowered settings.
125W 4080 is at least 30% faster than a full power 4070. I hate these sponsored content.
its likely more that with the case size and its thermal and space issues. The HP Omen 16 has a slim version and its 4070 gets beat sometimes by 4060's due to how limited the 70 is in the casing. The 80 is a bigger die and likely even if power limited to fit into the G14 the extra vRAM wouldn't mean much at that point with how much the rest would be hamstringed. SO they just decided to not offer it. HP seems to have made the same decision on its new 14in. Razer did it for its 14in Blade as well. I'd be surprised if the 14in XPS comes with more than a 4050 or 4060
@@KeithSchwerin I understand why they went with a 4070 maax because of how thin the device is. That said, I would rather this be called something like the flow x14 and have the g14 be reserved still for more powerful hardware. That said, it is good that the old model will still be available.
Actually it is the most beautiful I have seen ever as a gaming notebook. It is like Macbook version of gaming notebooks.
My question is: Would you consider the G16 a good Macbook Pro alternative? My intentions are content creation and gaming, which is the limiting factor on a Macbook besides the Apple OS. I absolutely love Apple's hardware, but would like to stick to Windows with more options.
This might be the very best computer that ships to the market in 2024. From an engineering standpoint, it's absolutely bonkers! and I'm a Mac user.
What about the M16?
