As long as the ball goes backwards from a player's hands while passing even if it bounces foward or can sometimes float slightly foward it's not deemed a foward pass.

I know this is an old video but I've only just discovered you, so hi. Great to see an American getting into the NRL!
The forward pass rule, its a bit complicated. Because the ball can 'float' forward after being released, it's not as cut and dried as just saying its a forward pass. At full speed, with a player running and passing to another player at full speed, its almost against the laws of physics for a ball not to float forwards. The ruling is that the ball has to go backwards 'out of the hands' of the passer. Here's a video that explains the concept pretty well. ruclips.net/video/box08lq9ylg/видео.html
It's a very annoying part of the game but they just haven't figured out the best way to rule on it in real time, and then via replay, YET. They will get there eventually though, I'm sure.

Thanks for sharing this. I hadn't heard of the float forward aspect of the rule so that's a new wrinkle for me.

Yeah basically if you’re running at 30km/hr (top speed), you’d have throw the ball 30km/hr backwards just so doesn’t travel forward. So when running virtually all passes are forward relative to the ground.
That’s why the forward pass rule is “forward relative to the player”

That said, there are a lot of passes, short ones mostly, that are blatantly forward and one poor referee is hard pressed to see them. Flaw in the game’s officiating

Australia Rules Football more fast moving and higher scoring games in NFL. With forward pass in a treat judgement call is pass interference is a judgement call

Hi you should watch the world club challenge Wigan (British) Vs Penrith from a few weeks ago? You should give the British super league our main rugby League.

I watched the highlights of that game and also watched last year's World Club Challenge between Penrith and St. Helens from last season. I remember there was at attempt to put a Super League team in Toronto which would have been cool but the pandemic ended that.

The World Club Championship is not a fair contest when one side has to travel 24hrs to play a pre season game usually hung over with jet lag, its on the oppositions home ground and is controlled by Superleague officials. In Australia this game is not taken seriously especially as the side that goes over is not necessarily the same one that won the previous years competion they will still be in the process of sorting out new combinations. For the NRL clubs winning or losing doesnt really mean much I think they are being pressured into playing it by the ARL in the interest of promoting the game internationally. The last thing that an NRL club needs is for their top players to be injured in a pre seaon game that offers nothing more than bragging rights for the winners.

@@user-bi8wp6wy3l super league team won over in Australia last year just saying maybe play it usa then it's never taking seriously when you lose. Play in a league with no relegation try that.

@@dawnfairclough345 Maybe they shouldnt play it at all especially just prior to the start of the regular season. If an NRL club happens to lose one of its top draw cards through injury in a game that really means nothing it wont only be a blow for that clubs chances but their fans are going to be absolutely ropable. If there is an appetite to watch a properly contested club competition then the top 4 finishing teams of each league should play in a knockout competition at the end of the season. . It could be held somewhere on neutral territory like in the US or even Dubai just as you suggested (which the NRL did in Las Vegas last week) it would be a fantastic opportunity to promote the sport of rugby league to the world. The Superleague is producing some really talented players and we are seeing more and more of them coming over and playing in the NRL but that current world club championship is treated as a side show in Australia rather than a serious competition.

The judgement of a forward pass isn’t as black and white as you make it out to be. If you are running as fast as you can and you pass a ball laterally it still moves forward as the ball has forward momentum. This is NOT a forward pass as long as the ball comes out of the hands sideways or backwards. Add to that the person making this judgement is running along with the players and will not be perpendicular to the pass. We don’t have 32 referees on the field and stop the play just to check things out like NFL.
They have trialed tech to judge this but as you can imagine it’s not a clearly defined motion.
