I once I said to her "you're more South African than you are Malawian because you were born here, live and only visit Malawi occasionally, you relate to being SAn more than Malawian". She said no! Even though she's lived in SA all her life but she was raised culturally as a Malawian, she made examples about the food she eats at home, language etc... It's a really tricky situation but how are you representing South African women with a Nigerian name? 1st thing that comes to mind when one sees that name is Nigeria not South Africa. Being South African is more than just being born in South Africa. Which of our South African cultures does she represent? Motho wa teng when she thinks of traditional food the first thing that comes to mind is probably egusi hai bathong no.

She's a beautiful girl, and should be embraced as a citizen of this country, However, in my personal opinion, she can't be representing S.A as an individual in a beauty pageant or on a global stage. Judges are usually western so they wouldn’t go beyond which area she grew up. But an indigenous blk South African should represent sa (it can lead to more work and opportunities). I have to disagree with you. Already you are starting the conversation by making a false equivalence between Rugby and a beauty pageant. Both these things serve different purposes and play by different rules. A Rugby league is about citizens from individual countries forming a team to play for the country they reside in. Don t get me wrong, you can play for your country of birth. You can play for the country of your parents or grandparents birth. You can play if you are a citizen of a country you weren't born in. But once you play a senior official game for one country, you can't change to another country. Those are the rules of rugby. That's why beast could represent South Africa in the rugby league. South Africa doesn't have a single identity. If she has a South African ID card, she's a citizen. We went through this in about 1975 when Vera Johns was Miss South Africa and it came to light that she was born in the then Rhodesia. She was not allowed to represent us at Miss World. I think it's about legality. Is she legally South African? Did she grow up here? Then cut her some slack.

There is a term called "acculturation", meaning you mentally and emotionally adopt the culture of the country you resie in and lose the characteristics, traits and identity of your birth culture. It takes years, but eventually you would feel uncomfortable and "strange" should you return to your land of birth. The hypocrisy of it all, "Miss South Africa" as a platform is an international one. People from around the world follow our queens because of what they have to offer and the missions that they serve. Chidimmas identity and cultural background hold no weight AT ALL on an international level. Miss South Africa 🇿🇦 represents all people and that includes other African people across the African diasporas. To solely base the conversation on her roots alone is such a limiting and divisive way of thinking. Honestly guys you all should be ashamed, embarrassed and shocked at what comes from your mouths, because Chidimma would not be the first person who is first generation anything to represent a country. For us especially who follow pageantry, a few names come to mind (i.e.): Maria Thattil who represented Australia at Miss Universe 2020 as Miss Australia did so, so beautifully and honourably. She was also met with the same kind of apprehension by locals (with her being seen as not Australian enough) even though she was born to Indian immigrants in Australia and grew up all her life there. She understood the cultural landscape of the country, the rhythm of its people and how important it was for her to represent that and other minority communities who form part of a society that is a cultural melting pot. So, just like Maria. Chidi in the South African context cannot and I refuse should never be painted as being less then or not worthy just because of her cultural background. She was born here, she grew up here, she went to school here, her social life is and has been primed by South Africans and South Africa. She is South African - period - regardless of her cultural and ethnic background. And let's be aware of the state of our country, South Africa is home to over five million immigrants (from all over the world), there are kids just like Chidi who have grown up and only know what it is to be South African. Those kids also need to see themselves reflected in her, our country is way too progressive to be held back by such small mindedness. In 2020, a South African Xhosa lady won Miss Universe Great Britain. She represented Great Britain incredibly despite this association of being 'foreign' and as a result of her impact earned herself a spot as a top 21 finalist at Miss Universe. The point being her the cultural identity of Great Britain was never lost but the world however got to appreciate its cultural diversity- all of this happening because of the kind of strides Jeanette created whilst reigning with said national title. In 2012, a South African lady born and raised in Soweto and early in her life moved on to the US. Represented the state of Maryland and became Miss USA 2012 shortly after Olivia Culpo won Miss Universe. She was celebrated !!! Ascending to the position of a national ambassador, is not only a cultural accomplishment. In fact Miss SA is not a cultural pageant. It is a leadership platform where young women of this country advocate for pertinent social causes and lead through advocacy based work and other various impact driven campaigns. Seeing as there's so much grievances around her (Chidimma) being a semifinalist, I think she's truly the perfect person to win and lead the conversation on how your daily xenophobia is shameful and harmful, how it denys her her own local identity and ultimately how this affects our nations social currency within a continent where honestly we as black people of it should be standing tall as one.

Why are we always twisting the true meaning of the statement " South Africa belongs to all who live in it, Black and White"... conveniently, especially foreigners, twist it to mean they also have an indesputable right to be here because according to some of them, the SA Constitution gives them that right. For some odd reason, we fàil to find and quote the context in which this important statement was made and added in the Constitution of SA. The National Party totally refused and utterly denied the Black people of South Africa any right to call themselves SAns, hence the breaking up of SA into these many different "homelands", a badly thought out idea to push Blacks out of the 'real' South Africa in order to be able to refer to the country as White South Africa. And so it came to be that when the Freedom Charter was drafted, one of the first statements to grace that Charter was that "South Africa belongs to all who live in it, Black and White," in a defiant vow that South Africa is for Whites only as the Whites contended, and that Blacks have their own homelands. There were no foreigners at that time save only for the few who worked on the mines, and that Charter was not even meant to include those...it was a South Africans only affair between Blacks and Whites. So please, give context when you quote the Constitution...it is for South Africans only not for foreigners.

Its not that complicated, when a child is born s/he takes a father's last name traditionally we all know that especially if the father pays damages (I know its controversial name but that's what its called) if parents are not married and its obvious when they are married. I have to disagree with you. Already you are starting the conversation by making a false equivalence between Rugby and a beauty pageant. Both these things serve different purposes and play by different rules.
A Rugby league is about citizens from individual countries forming a team to play for the country they reside in. Don t get me wrong, you can play for your country of birth. You can play for the country of your parents or grandparents birth. You can play if you are a citizen of a country you weren't born in. But once you play a senior official game for one country, you can't change to another country. Those are the rules of rugby. That's why beast could represent South Africa in the rugby league.
A beauty pageant such as such as this is different. It's not about the individual themself but rather what the individual represents as a symbol which is the country. Yes this girl is South African. Yes she's a second generation Nigerian. Yes she grew up in South Africa and can probably identify with our culture. However her name is the point of contention and what it represents. As much as she may be South African, her name represents a foreign identity to what this country is not accustom to. Her name alone is enough to rule her out of the competition because it's does not align with our identity which is what the contestants is supposed to represent.

We went through this in about 1975 when Vera Johns was Miss South Africa and it came to light that she was born in the then Rhodesia. She was not allowed to represent us at Miss World. I think it's about legality. Is she legally South African? Did she grow up here? Then cut her some slack.

I am a 6th generation South African with the unfortunate surname of Malan. I have lectured in a number of non-European countries and currently lecture Culture, among other things, in China. There is a term called "acculturation", meaning you mentally and emotionally adopt the culture of the country you resie in and lose the characteristics, traits and identity of your birth culture. It takes years, but eventually you would feel uncomfortable and "strange" should you return to your land of birth. Part of the issue here is whether WE feel comfortable when "other people" adopt our culture or not. Love your videos. It's good to debate such issues. Keep doing what you are doing. The hypocrisy of it all, "Miss South Africa" as a platform is an international one. People from around the world follow our queens because of what they have to offer and the missions that they serve.
Chidimmas identity and cultural background hold no weight AT ALL on an international level. Miss South Africa 🇿🇦 represents all people and that includes other African people across the African diasporas.
To solely base the conversation on her roots alone is such a limiting and divisive way of thinking. Honestly guys you all should be ashamed, embarrassed and shocked at what comes from your mouths, because Chidimma would not be the first person who is first generation anything to represent a country.
For us especially who follow pageantry, a few names come to mind (i.e.):
Maria Thattil who represented Australia at Miss Universe 2020 as Miss Australia did so, so beautifully and honourably. She was also met with the same kind of apprehension by locals (with her being seen as not Australian enough) even though she was born to Indian immigrants in Australia and grew up all her life there. She understood the cultural landscape of the country, the rhythm of its people and how important it was for her to represent that and other minority communities who form part of a society that is a cultural melting pot.
So, just like Maria. Chidi in the South African context cannot and I refuse should never be painted as being less then or not worthy just because of her cultural background. She was born here, she grew up here, she went to school here, her social life is and has been primed by South Africans and South Africa. She is South African - period - regardless of her cultural and ethnic background.
And let's be aware of the state of our country, South Africa is home to over five million immigrants (from all over the world), there are kids just like Chidi who have grown up and only know what it is to be South African. Those kids also need to see themselves reflected in her, our country is way too progressive to be held back by such small mindedness. The world looks to us as a reference of diversity and a richness in inclusion. We seriously cannot be so proudly thick headed and go as far as nulling out an incredible woman just because "you all" don't agree with the circumstances of her identify of the particulars of her heritage and the likeness of it. It is honestly such a disgraceful mindset to carry as an African.
Zozi is a Xhosa woman who broke boundaries and glass ceilings for young girls and women of colour all over the world. Her win as a black African Miss Universe was not only meant for South Africa and still today it isn't. She is cherished universally outside of her own personal identity as a South African Xhosa woman but as a black African global icon.
In 2020, a South African Xhosa lady won Miss Universe Great Britain. She represented Great Britain incredibly despite this association of being 'foreign' and as a result of her impact earned herself a spot as a top 21 finalist at Miss Universe. The point being her the cultural identity of Great Britain was never lost but the world however got to appreciate its cultural diversity- all of this happening because of the kind of strides Jeanette created whilst reigning with said national title.
In 2012, a South African lady born and raised in Soweto and early in her life moved on to the US. Represented the state of Maryland and became Miss USA 2012 shortly after Olivia Culpo won Miss Universe. She was celebrated !!!
Ascending to the position of a national ambassador, is not only a cultural accomplishment. In fact Miss SA is not a cultural pageant. It is a leadership platform where young women of this country advocate for pertinent social causes and lead through advocacy based work and other various impact driven campaigns. Seeing as there's so much grievances around her (Chidimma) being a semifinalist, I think she's truly the perfect person to win and lead the conversation on how your daily xenophobia is shameful and harmful, how it denys her her own local identity and ultimately how this affects our nations social currency within a continent where honestly we as black people of it should be standing tall as one.
But the thing is ,these countries you mentioned are not the same , like our history is not the same .Dont forget that in South Africa people just got the opportunity to showcase their culture and be proud of it and people want someone who culturally understands them .that commonality of our history ,similar beliefs and very different cultures makes South Africa South Africa .thus is a national thing .and I feel that yall are throwing the word xenophobia around loosely.besides what culture will she represent which is a whole event within the contest . Why are we always twisting the true meaning of the statement " South Africa belongs to all who live in it, Black and White"... conveniently, especially foreigners, twist it to mean they also have an indesputable right to be here because according to some of them, the SA Constitution gives them that right. For some odd reason, we fàil to find and quote the context in which this important statement was made and added in the Constitution of SA. The National Party totally refused and utterly denied the Black people of South Africa any right to call themselves SAns, hence the breaking up of SA into these many different "homelands", a badly thought out idea to push Blacks out of the 'real' South Africa in order to be able to refer to the country as White South Africa. And so it came to be that when the Freedom Charter was drafted, one of the first statements to grace that Charter was that "South Africa belongs to all who live in it, Black and White," in a defiant vow that South Africa is for Whites only as the Whites contended, and that Blacks have their own homelands. There were no foreigners at that time save only for the few who worked on the mines, and that Charter was not even meant to include those...it was a South Africans only affair between Blacks and Whites. So please, give context when you quote the Constitution...it is for South Africans only not for foreigners.

You can look at the sports national teams of all the countries you listed and look at the beauty pageant winners of those countries and you will see the difference. Sports is more concerned about performance over representation.

If she was born in SA by Italian parents, with an Italian name, looks Italian and speaks like an Italian then yes I would have a problem with that. The problem here is not a race thing it’s asking the question is she a good representation of what a South African women is to represent all South African women on the world stage.

In sport it is ok because it is not an individual that represents but a team. So it is a team of SAns based on citizenship. Long story short a ndebele woman from Zim understands SA culturally and even knows atleast one SA language.
