@@ArtySubu well actually everything! :D I also like mixed media and I take daily notes in them too. I've used colored pencils, watercolor, gouache and acrylic gouache and even oil paint (with gesso first), and the sketchbook can handle everything! :D
Aww, thanks. Yes, on Instagram (same name). I want to add that I am fascinated by how you create so much from your imagination. I am so tied to following references, but I found it inspiring how you used them sparingly.@@ArtySubu
I'll check your Instagram out. I'm barely on there these days, just post and hop out 😂 maybe I'll do a video about how I translate ideas to reality. I've always drawn better from imagination than from life, guess that's how my brain works?! Try an exercise of looking at a picture for 5 mins and then put the reference away and try drawing what you THINK you saw. It'll improve your observation skills and also your illustration skills! Let me know if you try it 💛
I have been using the A4 talens with cork cover and white paper. It is my go to, and I managed to find it at the art store near me in the standard A5 size this weekend too. So, I did stock up. 😂 Really enjoyed watching your process Arati! 😍
Ooh fab! I wish I'd found the cork cover first, to be honest, because I can't write my name and date on the art deco patterned cover like I normally do 😂 thanks f9r watching!! 💛
@@ArtySubuhi, you could create a strip or a circle of white gesso or white watercolour ground - and write on it with a permanent or acrylic markers. I did this on my cork cover and it worked well. If you want a circle you can create a template (cut a circle out and use the negative space)to ensure it stays round. I bought these sketchbooks in several colours and formats. I ❤ them.
I used the Talens book several times after seeing online folks use it. I decided I don’t like it. I feel like Cason XL mixed media or watercolor is just as inexpensive and better paper quality. That said, I know many like it.
i didn't think i'd enjoy the creme coloured pages but i actually LOVE them, i much prefer them to the white pages and won't be using that one at all i don't think. it just fits everything i do so perfectly. i do light watercolours and ink, works surprisingly well but like you said, can't use too much water. if i end up with a more wet page than normal i just put a book on top of the page before it's fully dry and that removes basically all of the potential warping. but yeh, the creme colour makes the watercolours look so nice and gives a nostalgic look to it. i will def be getting more of these once i have filled up my little pocket size sketch book! they are so cheap too!
Haha yes! It takes a LOT of colour correction to get the paper down to white! The other issue to me is the absorption.... Having used similarly priced sketchbooks with much better paper (Art Gecko, Seawhite of Brighton both good for water-based media), I'd still not re-buy the Talens. Even the white one. 💛
The sap green is very big compared to some of mine 😂 The white paper sketchbook is such a pretty cover! I kind of like off white paper but the royal talens is very off white. It makes scanning things in hard sometimes.
@monkeymintaka ha! I've been trying to preserve that sap green as much as possible! About the cream paper, yeah, right?! As it is I have to do extra work to clean up when scanning and for this book I have to go through and remove allllll the inside cream areas too! So annoying! Off white is nice but this is tooooo cream for me.
I hadn't seen any of the others but just checked their website and it's a cork cover plus two printed ones - some roses and a Dutch masters painting of a woman.
@@ArtySubu i had the cork covered one, but the paper didn't take watercolour at all, sadly ! please let us know how your white one is handling wet media compared to the cream/yellowy version
@darklittlepeople Ooh does the cork cover feel nice? 💛 I usually work with gouache or acrylic, but I do own watercolours so will test it. However, these are definitely NOT watercolour sketchbooks! Try the Art Gecko sketchbooks if you're a watercolourist... Lovely paper and takes water well.
Hello! If I was to buy again I'd get the cork cover, I think. Though the one I have (Art Deco black and gold) is very pretty too. The white paper inside is the same in all the patterned ones. The plain bright colours have the cream paper 💛
Thank you! It might take a while since I've got so many unused sketchbooks now 😂💛 have lovely Sunday too! Hope it's sunny and warm where you are unlike colddd England.
Yeah I agree, the 5x5 is too small for me. Have you tried Seawhite of Brighton 8x8? It was one of the first sketchbooks I got in 2023... ruclips.net/video/JH60blLTENM/видео.html
@@ArtySubu Funnily enough I'd literally just got one about a week ago! I bought one of Scrawlbox'c combo kits, which comes with a white one, so you can paint the cover... But I wish the pages inside were a bit smoother, I'm really not a fan of paper with a tooth haha
I like this sketchbook too, especially the extra white paper version! :)
That's great! What do you draw in them? 💛

That sounds exactly like a sketchbook that's perfect for you! 💛
Amazing video. Your channel is so underrated, hope this gets enough recognition. ❤
Thank you for watching! I'd love to know what you liked best about this video 👍
i LOVE the confidence with which you paint/draw/sketch!! It points out to me something I was lacking- I subbed, excited to see more! :)
Aw thank you so much! That's so good to hear... I was hesitant to show the process because I wasn't sure people would be interested! 🤣💛
I loved seeing your bloo jay come together! So much fun. I loved doing Birbfest! (1st time for me)
Yay! I'll check yours out, are they on Instagram? Glad you liked it!! 💛

Yes, I'm going to have to do that! Might try my gesso, tinted with black acrylic paint.
What a great video, thank you so much for allowing us to hear what your thought processes are… it really really helps . Thank you so much

This is so stunning, I love it ☺☺☺

I absolutely love this. I use many of the same tools as you which makes me feel like I must be on the right track since your work is so fantastic 😊
Thank you so much. 💛💛💛 What's your favourite thing to draw?

I agree. I like Art Gecko or Seawhite of Brighton better than this one. 👍🏼💛
I agree! I bought a Talens Book and ended up using it for mixed media projects.
Yep, it's definitely not my primary sketchbook! 💛

Glad you liked it! The paper colour really depends on your personal art style, right?! Not great for me for scanning, but perfect for you 👍🏼💛
@@ArtySubu yeah absolutely. i don’t scan stuff so i don’t have to think about that aspect at least xD i can imagine it’s quite tricky!

so nice ❤ new subscriber
Thank you so much! Looking forward to making more videos for you! 💛
Thank you so much for ur review! May i ask whether posca bleed through this paper? Thank you
Glad you found it useful! Posca does not bleed through, but if you use it in layers the paper does start to abrade a little.
@@ArtySubu thank you so much!
You're welcome! Check out the art gecko sketchbook too, it's a good one with great paper. ruclips.net/video/s2eH27cqKDY/видео.html
@@ArtySubu that’s so kind of u! Thank you❤️
Let me know if I can help in any way 💛👍🏼
The white one doesn't hold the water as well as the cream one does.
Oh, good to know!! I'll test that when I start using it! 💛 But also, would use mostly markers, pencils or gouache in it.
@ArtySubu I am interested in your opinion on this when you try it. Not many people compared it yet. Have a nice Sunday ❤️
Thank you! It might take a while since I've got so many unused sketchbooks now 😂💛 have lovely Sunday too! Hope it's sunny and warm where you are unlike colddd England.
I kinda wish they sold this in an 8”x8” size, afaik they only do 5x5” square format books which is just that little bit too small for my liking…

Ah yes! It's best for mixed media or even acrylic! I like it because it takes most media really well without show-through when I scan in.
Edited: Wish they sold the white paged versions in the U.S.
I'm pretty sure they're on Amazon and eBay! tinyurl.com/ArtCrA5 (*aff)
Too expensive
What is too expensive? The Royal Talens sketchbooks are some of the cheaper ones actually.
