Hey Josh you should youtube changing motorcycle tires using zip ties and see what ya think. I've used this idea several times it's the only way I'll do it now.

First, this new mechanical series with Joe is indispensable and thank god it lives here on the internet for all of eternity. B, 2 seasons with my local shop changing tires plus the gouge they put in my beautiful gold cross spoke rims....then watching you guys...it will only take 3 seasons and the Rabaconda will pay for itself. Keep it up Joe and you're gonna be a STAR!!
I’m an automotive tech and Joe is 💯 spot on with tire balancing machines. Shops I worked at the guys barely knew how to run them and for sure didn’t know how to calibrate them.. I figured out wrenching is more of a hobby for me than a profession and I’m too slow and meticulous to make good money at it.. lol. Granted not having come backs is the goal, but still too slow.. lol.. The last shop I worked at has a very fancy tire balancer and I ended up being the tire guy..
Little tip for anyone that doesn’t know.. If you are struggling to break the bead on a tire spin the tire slowly walking it around while using the bead breaker. Motorcycle tires can be pretty tough to break the bead..
Although that tire machine looks pretty janky. My knees don’t hurt thinking about being on my hands and knees on the concrete spooning the tire off.. lol

When i changed the tires on my dual sport it was 98 degrees and i didn't have a fan or stand. It was 2 spoon bars and piece of particle board on the floor to prevent damage to the hard wood floor of the shed. It wasn't as bad of a time people were making it out to be. Simply because i let the 2 new tires sit ontop of the SUV in direct sun for 2 hours before i put them on the rim. For balancing i used 2 floor jack stands and the tires axle bar to find the heavy spot.
Damn that stand seems like a life saver, I wrestled some shinko 777's for my sportster and I was hating like doing in on the garage floor and decided to use cyclegears free tire change with purchase for my next set on my striple but that was a 3 day ordeal and in a different city so a long drive. Thank you guys for this, great content, makes me wish i lived in florida so i could ride with you guys!

You know what, I'm actually getting a new front tire put on next week because I wasn't confident in dealing with bead sealing and other tire shenanigans... But Joe did a great job in convincing me that it's not all that bad. I might do it myself next time.

I've poor boy'd my fair share of tires over the years, last ones being during covid lockdown, a set of four 31-10.50's. One thing I have never attempted is fork seals, and I have a little bit of oil showing on one and gonna have to do it before to much longer. Any advice from the Surgeon and the Jedi would be awesome. Loving these vids and all the vids really. Thanks!

So this year i tried balancing beads and got motion pro bead budy highly recommend them .
I've probably changed 20 tires by hand with no stand. For a bead breaker, I used a old bumper jack, putting the base on the bead and jack it up. It works slick as shit.

Man, I really appreciate all the info from the Mountain Jedi. I have really enjoyed his informational videos. Even though as a mechanic i have done all these things, but he pointed out a lot of tips and tricks that are helpful, especially with the balancing.

As someone who only has a small amount of confidence when working on a 70's or 80's Japanese dirt or street bike. I have a desire to learn how to do at least regular maintenance on my 2005 Dyna.

Two further tips. Warm the Tyre in the sun or with a heat gun, makes life easier. Also start and finish at the valve stem then you can push it up to keep front snagging the tube.

I have changed 7 tires on 4 bikes in the last 2 years on my knees. That stand sorta sucks, but better than on your knees. (One knee replaced and the other one hates me. Ha )

I do mine on a mat in the driveway/garage with spoons. The first time was fun. An 05 sporty with factory tires in 22. I do have a manual press that I used with wood blocks to break the beads though. Be creative and the journey makes itself.
I also find leaving the new tire to soak in the sun, if available, helps with mounting it. If no sun, then a hair dryer or heat gun (carefully) will help relax the tire and make installation that much easier ...
Here's one about Harley rims for ya. Most of the 70-80s sportster rims that were spokes were boranni rims. so what you say . Well they completely were hand made in Italy. Hand formed , hand drilled for spoke holes, and assembled. If I remember correctly there were 3 different rims. The most valuable were the high wallers . On the inside of the rims was a type of serial number that indicated what motorcycle it was built for and manufactured for the brand of bike. Now these wheels were built for cars ,bikes, motorcycles, and race cars from the early teens or twenty's of the 19 th century. Including Ferraris . They are valuable. I have a few of them polished up they look real nice !

Best tip I've picked up without a tire machine is using the bikes kick stand to break the bead or lay the tire under a vehicle and use an inverted scissor jack pressing between the vehicle and tire
I just changed my tires for about the 4th time and it doesn't get easier, but I'm glad to have done it myself.
This content is very helpful to those of us not skilled enough to be a "surgeon". I can ride them, but I can't fix them. Joe's nature seems to perfectly align with the idea of teaching. He is very calm in his explanations and does not panic when things are not as expected. I hope we can get much more content with Joe. And as always, Josh thanks for keeping it weird.

I frickin' hate changing tires. It always takes me 3 times as long as I budget for. That Rabaconda device that Weems has looks really nice. I don't change tires that often so it's hard to justify buying one of those. I think I've changed 3 sets of motorcycle tires in my life. I cursed and screamed the whole time.

When is it best to opt for an extended 90-degree valve stem?
Every time, imo, I have that on my rear but not on the front and it pisses me off every time I go to check and/or put air in the front. Getting around discs and all that. I'd do it everytime.

Personally, I do it whenever it's "practical"... On Harley wheels, most of the time, the stem is either on the side of the wheel, or close enough to the brake calipers that it's either sticking out at a dorky angle, or you have to turn it so much to clear the brake package that it's not really as useful as you'd think!!( Not to mention being more prone to getting knocked off by road debris!!)

I run rear Shinko 890's on my Victory Cross Country and they've been fine. Just put my 4th one on, stepped up to a 200/55-16 over the 180/60-16. And I don't even balance them other than lining up the dots, smooth into the triple digits.
I need to come up and see The Jedi about my Ural, lol.
I've been using a Rabaconda for about 4 years and let me tell you the money was money well spent. It makes changing tires a breeze and when you change tires as many times as I do as well as all of my friends now that they know I have a tire changer. The instructions from Joe the Mountain Jedi was excellent.
This is great. If that was me, there would be a lot of cussing and sweating and some bleeding. Lololol 🤣

Love it! I've changed countless tires by wrestling them on the floor with spoons and a C clamp to break the bead. Even my kids helped me. But I started by using big flathead screwdrivers on bicycle tires. I usually used Dishsoap, byt now I'll try silicone.
One thing a bunch of guys suggested when I got my harbor freight wheel holder, was to bend the tabs that clamp down on the rim. So it doesn't pop off. And get a big NoMar brand tire iron.
Run across a tubeless with a stubborn to seat bead where I've used ratchet straps placed down center of tire to push sidewalls out...Rare to need it on motorcycle tire but handy tip for heavier lug ATV/lawn mower/small tractor tires.... > Used to see (even in pro shops way back when) old metal trashcan with plate at bottom & steel rod thru center...fill trashcan with gravel,rocks/brick,etc.anything heavy for weight = cobbled up tire change stand... Great video ! I like those longer tire spoons with actual handles.

I may of missed it but if you have rotational tires make sure to double check the arrow indicator on the tires before installing so you don't put them on the wrong direction

I have a super old 6ft tall slide hammer that was my grandpa's that I use to break the beads off my tires. It will give you a workout.
LOVE this!!!! Obviously we all love Joe and being a sponge around him would be a privilege. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that him talking with a cig in his mouth hit me in the feels as my dad did that and I NEVER gave it a thought, until Joe just did it. Brought a smile and was a fantastic memory of my dad whos been gone for 34 years.

I learned SO much from my Dad and Grandpa that stuck with me to the core....both of these Men were a HUGE impact on my life, and the way I approach things, and I miss them both something terrible....

I helped my Dad and uncle change a tubed tire on a CB750 when I was a teenager. It took a fair bit longer, and involved significantly more sweat and indelicate language, as I recall.

I've done lots of dirt bike and dual sport tires, but have never tried a tubeless bike tire yet. Back tires getting getting a little skinny on my Voyager though, so I'm tossing around giving it a crack.

When i was younger, i used to change car tyres with a sledge hammer and a wedge of wood to break the bead still have the tyre levers

There are a lot of shops that chargeca premium for mounting even a brought in wheel. In that case I'd mount my own.
However I pay $15 a wheel for a local shop that has a hydraulic machine and a wobble balancer. That price includes the balance and weights.
$30 an axle for bringing in the bike itself. That's just too derned reasonable for me to muck it up on my patio with spoons and two jack stands + weights.

Great vid! Thank you for the insight. I like to do work myself that way if it gets screwed up i'm the one to blame. Not to mention i can look at everything to have an understanding and an eye on everything. I have a shop i trust for tires and they have really good prices imho so i think until they prove me wrong i'll stick with them for my tires at least.

Tire change instruction - excellent. Tire change stand? No so much.
My dad would take a ratchet strap and go around the middle of the tire causing the beads to push out after taking out the valve guts. For any tires having a seal problem.
The cost of your tire stand and balancer is the cost of having a shop do it! Great video showing diy and the tools!
I worked at a Triumph shop,owner couldnt justify a tire machine. We cut the end off a smaller 30 gal. Drum,lined the rim with a split garden hose to not scratch,and spoons.
