My favorite song from this game isn't even from any of the race tracks it's the credits theme. Gets me teary eyed thinking back on all the memories. Just sounds really good too
Yeah, same! Seeing all the racers going by in the order they finished in at the end of the Grand Prix as well with the triumphant crescendo as they all drive off into the sunset...its just lovely
It's true, there are actually two separate credits tracks (one for 50 and 100cc, one for 150cc and mirror) and both are great with a lovely little tinge of "game over" melancholy.
The bowsers castle at 29:24 is honestly the most memorable of all the bowser castle tracks for me. It was the correct amount of difficult and i hope to see it return in MK8
The tss tss instrument in luigi’s mansion is called a cabasa, it’s a percussion instrument made of steel beads on a wooden cylinder. Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood music major
Cheep Cheep Beach is actually pretty good for a beach track in my opinion. The tide thing is pretty nice, and the music is some good beach vibes. Not too remarkable, but it’s alright. Though maybe I’m thinking a little more of my time with it in MK8. 🤷
even though i found you not too long ago, i love your videos and tier lists!!!! so fully entertaining, and your personality is magnetic!! plus most people don’t include music rankings and i appreciate it so much, especially when you’re able to find little elements in the tracks. thank you for all the work you put into what you do, musty!!!!

Double dash was on of the first video games I ever played and the first mario kart game I played. I love it and I will always love it. I love the chaos the items bring. It’s chaotic in a fun way
Cheep Cheep Beach should at least be above Yoshi Falls and Desert Hills. It’s certainly not the craziest course out there but it’s a perfectly inoffensive relaxing beach course.
In defense of the retro tracks in MKDS, it was Nintendo’s first time actually implementing retro stages (not including Super Circuit) But I hard agree; the stage selection could’ve been a lot better
my favorite tracks are tick tock clock, rainbow road, airship fortress, wario stadium, and waluigi pinball. MK DS also has a special nostalgic place in my heart.
Aight I gotta say there’s always a lot of slander for DK Pass but one thing people are constantly forgetting is the CRACKED item box before descending the summit. If you’re far enough in the lead and can bunny hop your way up to that box, it’s just another layer of fun for the map.
I may be biased, but I do agree with the chat that delfino square deserves S tier. I had basically mastered it, and without even having to use the steer turbo (my ds had the R button that was almost gone, so I ALWAYS picked tartosso with the panzer with max control and took curves like a champ xD)
speaking of compressed soundbytes from old games: When Mario says "Let's-a-go!" when entering a level in SM64, I always thought he said "Mexico!" as a child lol
Racetracks: 16: Figure 8 Circuit (Has nothing except a basic layout) 15: Yoshi Falls (How do make a bad Yoshi track? Terrible Mushroom Cup!) 14: Desert Hills (Yet another frustrating, bland desert track) 13: Mario Circuit (Yay. Mario Circuit. That’s cool!) 4: Peach Gardens (A simple but effective banger imo!) 3: Bowser’s Castle (My personal favorite variation) 2: Airship Fortress (A banger! So many awesome obstacles!) 1: Waluigi Pinball (One of those crazy Mariokart themes) OST: 14: Desert Hills (I already forgot what this one sounds like) 13: Yoshi Falls (Another very forgettable track with forgettable music) 12: Tick Tock Clock (A great track with mid music tbh) 11: Cheep Cheep Beach (Regular beach music, but I love beach music) 10: Circuit Theme (Surprisingly good for such bland tracks) 9: Rainbow Road (No strong feelings on it either way) 8: DK Pass (I actually really love this music so much) 7: Luigi’s Mansion (The snake sound carries this whole OST) 6: Peach Gardens (Accordian Guy deserves a raise) 5: Bowser’s Castle (Mixture of ominous sounds and rock? Yes, please!) 4: Delfino Square (Reminds me so much of Sunshine! Love it!) 3: Shroom Ridge (The remix is better, but I still love it sm) 2: Airship Fortress (Matches the intense atmosphere of the track itself) 1: Waluigi/Wario (Do I even need to explain this spot?)

Good tier list, Mario Kart DS was my 1st Mario Kart game, so I'm a bit biased, although I was shocked when i found out a few years ago that some DS tracks were watered-down versions of their double dash counterparts.
You're my favorite youtuber to watch Mario Kart content on. Love the way you look at the tracks and OSTs, but I love the humor you and chat have the most about these videos. It's absolutely incredible!
I really appreciate the spinning gears in 8D's Tick Tock Clock because you need to time your tricks to get the boosts, even if it means you aren't taking the best racing lines. Then they say, "Just glide over this cool section lol"
30:00 What makes the Spinning Rod of Doom extra evil is how Mario Kart DS's weight classes affect the gameplay. Usually with other entries, a heavier kart just means less acceleration etc. But in DS, heavier karts can send smaller karts FLYING off the track by simply approaching them (like the Wario in Luigi Circuit GBA). It's like watching billards. So it adds an extra bit of challenge when you're on the rod and say a Donkey Kong is rapidly approaching
Love the tier lists as always Musty, amazing video! The courses weren't the strong part of this game minus a few great ones, but the other modes made it very memorable and nostalgic. Also I just realized how much Yoshi Falls sounds like DK Mountain??? Nintendo trying to pull a fast one on us

I can 100% confirm that if you hit someone at the peak of the loop on Rainbow Road you do fall off. I'd do it all the time against the ais; just drop a banana in the middle of the road as soon as the bottom screen flips around
To be fair on the Retro Tracks, DS was the first game in the series to do that so they were still working out the kinks on how to remake them. Also transferring them from a console like for example the Gamecube to the less powerful DS

Honestly agreeable but I'd have elevated maybe 5 or so tracks a tier above where they were, personally pretty big DK Pass fan. Its more about sharp turns and maintaining speed through the boost ramps. I think a remake could really give it a glow up
