I watched this movie on TCM last week and now I can't stop thinking abour it
I wanted to see this as a 9-year-old back in 1975, but instead, my parents took me to some bomb about a fish or something. It might have been called Jaws, IIRC. Wonder whatever happened to that movie? Meanwhile, Doc Savage has spawned multiple sequels and is known as the first summer blockbuster.
The fish movie was a major disappointment. If only they had a bigger boat!!
The funny thing is you just know that Doc Savage would have made Jaws his bit*h if they were in the same movie
If they're ever going to make Doc Savage into a good movie, they should get director Joe Johnston out of self imposed retirement. Guy did great period pieces with The Rocketeer and Captain America: The First Avenger, I think he could sell it the right way...

Before Superman their was Doc Savage the Man of Bronze.
Damn right it predates Superman including the words like fortress of solitude I don't know why the rock don't want to make this movie he's exactly how dark Savage would look in physique and looks he's perfect for the role.
Damn right I don't know how DC comic got the word fortress of solitude trademark and copyrighted when they had it first.
I used to buy the books based on the cover and that's what made Reading fundamental one did I have an imagination as a kid
In fact, in the ad for the Doc Savage pulp magazine in the early 1930s, the word “superman” was used to describe Doc.
I've never read confirmation of this, but I've long suspected that "Clark Kent" was named after Clark Savage and 1931's Kent Allard, The Shadow.
I don't know about you guys, but when I was really young and this movies came, those green floating snakes gave me few nightmares.

Yeah that's the Stuff I only saw it once back in 1975 but those snake spirits had me wigged out for weeks if not months. I am so thankful my mother told my brother not to take me to see Fantastic Planet, I could only take so much.

I was a huge fan of the series of books. I was so excited to hear about the movie. I FINALLY got to see it at a Star Trek Con. I had forgotten just how terrible this film was!

Much better idea than Johnson playing Jack Burton. Great opportunities to make this an excellent movie, either in period or updated. The 1975 version is campy and I understand Ron Ely was told to play it seriously, which pissed him off when he saw the results.

I was at the first showing, before its premier and was expecting it to be serious, but came out campy. George Pal was there and looked a bit disappointed that came campier than it should've been. I don't know if George Pal intended it to be campy.

Doc Savage is not quite a DC Hero. He is a Conde Nast property although DC, Marvel and currently IIRC Dynamite have all licensed him by turns.
And there is considerable evidence that Doc was the one to introduce the concept of the Fortress - and even both the names "Superman" and "Clark"!
Oh right, I got confused as i remeber reading a Batman, Doc Savage the Spirit, Team up one time.
And I didnt know that, but im not surprised that superman was late to the party on that.
Heck it like Batman with the bat cave, that was introduced by the movie serials in like the 40s.
yet again superman was so different in his first ever story, protrayed as a villian, he basically became the foundation for superman's nemesis later down the line Lex Luthor.
I saw that team up, but Doc Savage is pulp fiction (181 short, 100ish paged novels), while Batman is from the comic books.

The Rock is playing Doc Savage? Please God no. This looks awful.
The movie from the 1970s was almost a spoof, like the old Batman TV series. The books, which date back to the early 1930s, are serious and fun reads. The character is great. He's like James Bond, only with almost super human mental and physical abilities. He's also an inventor of all kinds of cool things, which he uses to help him fight crime. He has five trusty side kicks, each top experts in some field. He uses his abilities to fight crime.
Doc Savage predates James Bond and Superman. So, he's an original character and a great American fictional hero that, I think, has been neglected.
This could be great if done right. Or, it could be like the cheesy 1970s movie. Ron Ely was well cast in it, but the scrip and directing was terrible. The movie was a joke.
+ORagnar Exactly! Doc was a true Renaissance man, thats what made him really great. I'd love to see Doc on the screen again but I worry if his true essence will get lost by writers trying to compete with the Avengers, Ironman and Captian America movies....
