We all leave archives of information behind us, whether its photos or diaries they offer us a rich a tapestry as to who we’ve been. In 2021 Guy Mankowski was given the unseen archive of Kristen Pfaff, member of the cult band Hole. Using her archive of personal effects to create a portrait Guy discovered that the person emerging was extremely different to their public persona. Now he shares the radical idea that by delving into our own archives and exploring our past selves we can reappraise who we truly are.
Dr Guy Mankowski was singer in the signed band Alba Nova. He is the author of novels including ‘Letters from Yelena’, which was researched in the world of Russian ballet. It won an Arts Council Literature Award, was adapted for the stage and used in GCSE training. He also writes about music, and penned ‘Albion’s Secret History: Snapshots of England’s Pop Rebels and Outsiders.’ He is a lecturer in Creative Writing at Lincoln University. During lockdown, he found himself in the unusual position of being given the archive of a famous pop star, an archive that even her family hadn't opened... I lost a sibling to drugs in a similar way to how Kristen Pfaff died. The idea we can unbox who someone really was from what they left behind floored me. Just added this to my list of books to read. Stunning talk.
I'm reading Perfume at the moment, Kurt gave it to Kristen before he died and then tragically she followed suit. She was very talented, smart, beautiful and i think she made a lot of people jealous because she was genuine without even trying. idk. I have a big appreciation for Ms Pfaff.
Perfume is an incredible novel and the insight it shows into Cobain's perspective on the human condition I think is fascinating as he always had such an empathic side. I think you are right with what you say about Pfaff. One of the many aspects of her that have been overlooked in the popular narrative about her is her incredible ability to enter any situation- as an artist, an activist- and make it a success. The book explores that quite a bit.
@@guymankowski3358 I can't read to read you're book. About 10 years ago I came across Kristen. You're right it does become Kristen after a while lol. I read everything online I could, doing a deep dive. I was amazed at her story and how everyone described her as a beautiful soul. Can't wait to read the book.:)

@@izzydeadyet7336 I think Eric was to be feared. He was the last to visit her, gave her H. Jealousy seems to reside with him, her ex. He admits in an interview, when asked about KP, that people are dead because of his actions. H*ll hath no fury like a man scorned.

Do you have a relative called Leopold who was in the army? I know, strange question, but there is purpose behind it, I think I have a photo of him but I'm unsure.
I cant describe the happiness that this book will finally be published. I’ve heard about this project from Guy, Sara and Jason for some time and can’t wait to read it.
I knew Kristen from 4-14 years old. We were childhood friends. This is for those who want to know something about her.
I was 5 when I met her, awkward, with few friends (none really). Kristen and her mom moved upstairs from us in an apartment in Amherst NY. She was a ray of sunshine (no exaggeration). We were instant friends. She loved people and her love for music started early.
She played the piano (when she was a few years older). We had many sleep overs and I remember listening to Barry Manilow records with her. She was smart, and popular all through school.... had many friends.
When we were 14 and 15... we had a sleep over planned on New Years Eve and made plans to see our boyfriends (we weren't supposed to)... ordered a giant pizza (not supposed to do that either...) lol... got busted by our parents later and got in trouble for that one.
At that age her musical taste changed.. she got into lover boy, reo speedwagon, kansas, and eventually fell in love with the Doors. I remember she thought Jim Morrison was "beautiful". For me, I sensed a darkness over Jim... but she didn't see it. It is haunting now that he died at 27 years old of a drug overdose, in a bathtub (supposedly) of all places...
The last time I saw her was in the mall in Amherst. She was off from college on break (about 21 years old then, and in her punk phase, I can confirm that). I never saw her again after that... had no idea what happened to her.
The strange thing is, about a month before her death - I decided to pay her mom a visit. It was then that I found out about her fame... etc... all of that. Her mom showed me a magazine with Kris on the cover with Hole. At the time I was 28 years old and of course thought "how cool". But the truth is, she had NO light in her eyes, no joy. Not even a shadow left of the girl I knew....
Kristen befriended me when almost nobody else would... and she was so much FUN!!! When she came over, it was always a party, WITHOUT drugs!!

thank you for sharing this 💞 this is very interesting, and I agree with you on the fact that Kristen didn’t seem very happy when she was in Hole. She just looked depressed, and in a couple pictures, she looked so done. According to some people, she didn’t get along with Courtney very well and Courtney was potentially verbally abusive towards her.

kristen pfaff has never failed to give me inspiration. you don’t hear people talk about her often, except whenever they say “oh yeah she’s that dead hole bassist” but i see much more than that. i see someone with a genuine musical talent, a genuine personality, a staple in the grunge movement that you won’t ever hear about, and just a great person that just got taken too soon. she should get more recognition.
good point and your observations are perceptive, I think. I was surprised going into the archive just how rich her life is and how many successful phases it had, from activism to Janitor Joe and Hole. Like you I'm keen to reframe her life beyond her death and focus on all she achieved with it

@@lawdawg6730 more on this in the book but Kim Deal was one of the reasons Kristen picked up the bass and she learned Doolittle from front to back to become the bassist she is. So your comment is very astute.

The hard copy of Kristin‘s diary had the pages ripped out during the time when Kurt died. Was/is there an audio version?
the diary recordings I talk of are separate to the diary you reference. Janet Pfaff has copies of the latter I've not seen but she has spoken of her considering sharing them in future
Yeah nah and no one has ever seen the original without pages ripped out I don’t think
Probably somebody removing all traces of evidence of the week Kurt was supposedly missing and suicidal, according to his wife only. It's known that her passing was also staged.
There is no pattern of her ripping out pages of her diary only for that week when Kurt found dead. If that is not screamingly obvious than nothing it is.

Hi thanks for your kind comment am grateful for your interest. The missing pages are from the paper diary that were in her mothers possession and covered the time Cobain was missing. The diary recordings cover various but different times it seems, including when she was in Hole, recording Live Through This, and in the process of getting clean.

And quite bizarre to hear them first hand from a time capsule, about a world we only imagine we understand as fans. I found the comment you made about the contents and how some of which would make headlines intriguing. I also love that your passion for music and musicians has brought you to your ability to write so your audience can absorb with the written word. I know as a creative, that thoughts are much easier to express with words or pictures.

I am glad this book is being written and that there will be so much of her in there, in her own words. There is much to write about forgotten' women of grunge. I'd love you to do something on Mia Zapata next as I went down that rabbit hole recently and I believe her story deserves to be told.

I am not sure why I first looked into Kristen Pfaff tbh, But I was not prepared for what would be on her tapes and in her archive, the richness and influence of her experience of an activist or just how much she meant to people beyond those she personally knew.
I've looked into Zapata and found the story haunting. I am tempted to write a book about her next but I see there is one coming out again soon. She was a radiant talent and it is tragic what happened. I want people to know more about Mia Zapata.

I enjoyed watching this-as a longtime fan of Kristen-29 years! I find myself looking back at what my teens were like in the 90’s compared to what it’s like for teens today-& it really isn’t much different as far as feelings go…Yes experiences are different for everyone but life is a journey & from a sociology perspective its very interesting to look into other’s experiences as well…It helps me find other people that are similar to me in how they relate to others & the world at large…I’m really interested in Guy’s work now…after seeing this quick video-I’m going to research him…

Thanks Brad. Even now I'm still getting new revelations on this book and my agent is now pushing this afresh to US publishers. I'm in a cafe in the UK where I've just updated it with even more new information! There is also a lot of film company interest in depicting her

I agree. Jason Pfaff has accumulated hours of interview footage with people who knew her best and I draw from it in the book. A film- possibly entitled X-ten- will happen. We've had interest from showrunners about adapting the book as a film which we're keen to do.
Best I can say is I rode the bus with Kristen in middle school, and had a crush on her cuz she was certainly gorgeous. I met her mom years later when I was working in Orchard Park NY at a multimedia company, what a wonderful woman.

This is a very interesting talk....I hope his book has much success, I think what happened to Kristen Pfaff is a tragedy, not only for what she could have done musically of course, but what she could have done for the rest of her life....anyway I will keep a look out for this book when it is published.

Her death should have been investigared. I dont buy that she OD'd. Her car was fully packed and ready to go. Old Courtney Love has alot of blood on her hands.

This was an incredible Ted talk. You speak with such sincerity and your words are quite movingly resonant. I first discovered Kristen Pfaff as a teen girl discovering my musical tastes and feeling immediately struck by Kristen's photo in the CD 💿 booklet for Live Through This. I've felt an immense curiosity about her ever since. I actually purchased and read Janet Pfaff's book but found it to be more about her own journey through grief as a Mother...a beautiful read. I am craving more insights and information about Kristen. As an avid diarist myself, I've often pondered what I will leave behind. I personally have more than 50 handwritten ✍ volumes...so, I am particularly intrigued by anything to do with what Kristen wrote and recorded. I wish you great success with your book 📖

I have said it many times, and I will say it again- I want to listen to Live Through This, watch the Miss World video, and hear/watch everything else that Kristen did with Hole, but I don't want to see/hear those two people, if you know what I mean.

Pretty cool analogy here, especially using Kristen Pfaff as an example. I loved her. Kurt loved her, and Courtney hated her for that. She was so authentic, and genuine and so talented, three things Courtney could never be. I'd kill to know what she said and how she said it about Courtney! Don't have a date on it just yet but some news on this soon seems likely. One reason the book has kept being delayed is more information being given to me which has needed to be added to it. Hello Lucas. I am a big fan of Kristen and have always admired her. I always find out new information every year or so when I Google her name. I have Janitor Joe on vinyl and recently have heard her speak on an old radio clip. PLEASE pardon me for asking but if Kristen was your aunt...um did you know her. Or did she pass before you were born. I don't mean to sneak or creep into this message but I'm just curious if your father is Norman? Anyways, I hope your are doing OK. Thanks...Brandon.

How many pages will the book be will it be a volume 1 and 2 ?
Thank you for your interest. At the moment it's 74,000 words and one volume. But the more word gets out about the book the more people who knew Kristen came to me with what they want to share so it keeps getting longer. Given that, unless that stops happening, I can well seeing further volumes and editions further down the line

I’d be interested to know more about the full extent of Kristen’s contributions to the live through this album. If she did bring in some lyrics, like as you say for miss world for example, she never gets credited for any writing; but that’s just the way it goes.
You raise a good point. The producers of the record say she was the first they'd worked with who did it all one take. She worked out very innovative bass parts and as well as riffs she brought lyrics in. The book goes into this in huge detail as the first tape of her diary recordings cover this time. A Pfaff fan sent me what she says is demos on RUclips with Pfaff singing on Doll Parts instead of Dana Kletter, who was brought into replace her parts. I personally think Pfaff's singing was excellent and it's a shame those parts were cut.

Probably around 1986 whilst still enrolled at Boston College. We don't know exactly.

Isn’t it interesting - he’s had access to those tapes, opinions & thoughts from the horses mouth. I wonder if there is anything revealing to the players in the Cobain story; Love, Earlandson, Schemel, Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl + others. What were her true opinions & thoughts on those guys and did she help out more than credited in writing the songs.

I would say he's in a delicate situation here! He's been privileged enough to be trusted with Kristen's inner most personal thoughts and its not his motive to disclose what we want to hear. It's a story about her from his perspective and how it relates to us all. We know that he has knowledge that could shake things up but it will come at a cost to him to reveal anything. We want the truth about Kurt and Kristen's passings and getting it will have to come from somewhere else I suspect!

full respect for complete work like this, the talk. But about 10 years ago us around here would have felt like 9 points out of ten about it, now in 2022 we just agreed the 2nd half about himself does not make full sense to us. His closing words kind of tell a sense he is making, we agree with that. But the first half about the artist Kristen Pfaff has - to us - nothing to do with his story. That's 2 opposing points we tell here now. The - to us - weird flavour in his talk is: why is he telling this. Unsatisfied with his own life? Or really because he means there is a red-line showing a major mission that everybody is on - knowingly or unknowingly. Fair. Fine. We think he is unsatisfied with his own life.
or he is not very happy about the limitation by the legal context affecting his to-be-published book. He seems to mention this here in his talk. The legal context that does take effect on his work and the talk - any of his talk about it - forbids him to tell particular parts Kristen Pfaff journaled.
He wants to tell stories.

True stories which some people would never believe could all happen to one person in such a short time.

I found it very moving. It was very respectful, and I suspect that Kristen's family is involved in the project. Armchair detectives usually don't treat things so respectfully and often don't seem to treat the subject with much respect for the family. I appreciated that we aren't just talking about Kristen's suspicious death, but about her as an extraordinary human.
The family picked the right person to trust with something so precious.
