Budapest was my last holiday abroad almost 2 years ago now and I loved it. My favourite part was the synagogue I’m not Jewish and had never been in a synagogue. We did the tour and learned about the Hungarian Jews in the war although it was so sad, it made me cry. There are stories of human kindness of people too, saving and protecting the Jews by making them citizens of other countries. There’s a weeping willow tree memorial in the grounds that’s moving. More Hungarians where sent to Auschwitz then from any other country in 147 trains. Although it was so so sad it was very interesting and made me grateful for the freedom we take for granted today.

Hi Julie! thanks so much for tuning in and it’s great to hear of your experiences of Budapest, they sound incredibly moving and poignant. We visited Auschwitz last year and it was the same, truly harrowing and heartbreakingly sad and we walked away forever moved by the experience, and determined to make our minutes and seconds matter because we are just so fortunate. Have a great week and thank you for being here, means a lot to us as always.

Julie me too been to Budapest and Prague, 2 of my most favourite cities in Eastern Europe, WW2 had in these cities the greatest after Poland and Russia Jewish communities. Visited both the Museums you speak about. And all the shoes over the boardwalk over the Danube, they found out that 800 000 Hungarian Jews were exterminated. Sad history.🙏💖🌺🥰

Mind blowing cave stalactite and stalagmites takes thousands of years to meet. Monumental. Did you go to the largest underground lake in Austria. We did and did boating. It was creepy. I feel claustrophobic and cannot stay underground for too long. I was on official business trip to Budapest, Hungary, East Germany, Kiev and Moscow in 1988. and history happened in 1989. So I have memorable memories of Budapest and went inside the Parliament building for a meeting. Nostalgic watching your vlog.

Then that amazing roof is like bead work , the colouring and pattern is great . You will find lots of home educating groups on Facebook (it forced me to have to start using social media!) and you'll also find world schooling groups on there that you can join and be part of a like-minded community. There is also a chap called Stark Raving Dad on there, who I recommend checking out. He has some great insights into home educating and is amusing with it. I would also recommend looking at the work of Peter Gray - I have just read his 'Mother Nature's Pedagogy' collection of essays, which are a lovely insight into how children learn. Then there's the late John Holt, who was a teacher but actually recognised the value of child-led learning and moving away from the education system. And there are endless podcasts too. @@TheNewbys Well, I thought it is obvious.
Would you say that the Brits left France/Normandy in the middle ages? Although the French/Normands/Angevines occupied and ruled Britain it was still a separate Kingdom, it was never part a French state so it could not leave it. (I hope my understanding is right, I am not an expert on this)
The Soviet Union was a (unvilling) union of states, among others Latvia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and of course Russia. Yes, Russia was only one of the Soviet States (in theory they were equal parts in the union).
Hungary, Poland etc. were never part of the Soviet Union (there was a short lived Soviet state in Hungary at the end of the Firs World War but it had nothing to do with the later established Soviet Union).
The Soviet Union (or rather the imperialist Russia) simply occupied Hungary and stationed troops there to make sure a "friendly" form of regime runs it, but (alhough formal) the sovereignity of the Hungarian state was never compromised.
Eg. Hungary was a member state of the UN but Latvia, Ukraine and all the member states of the Soviet Union were not existed as separate states and were not members of the UN.
What you could say is that Hungary left the Warsaw pact (the military alliance of the Russian sphare of influence), abolished the single party political system forged by the Soviets (1989) and hold free elections (1990), demaned the withdrawal of the Russian troops (finally the last Russian/Soviet troops left Hungary in June 1991).
Lesser known but even under the Habsburg dinasty the Hungarian statehood was never compromised. So in fact there was no such a thing as Austrian Empire in Hungary, ot was always a separate state, the Hungarian Kingdom. The Habsburgs were crowned as Hungarian kings beside being Emperors of Austria (two states ruled by the same person: personal union). Only this way did they have the right to rule the Hungarian lands. Without the Hungarian Crown there was no constitutional right to make laws valid in Hungary. Under the old Hungarian Constitution only the Saint Hungarian Crown had political power, the persons did not. When crowned the person assumed the constitutional political power from the Saint Hungarian Crown and could make legally valid decisions. That is why the first thing an occupational force wanted is to grab the Saint Hungarian Crown. So did the US whan they stolen it in the WWII. They returned it only in 1978.
The Saint Hungarian Crown is on exhibit in the Parliament building.

@@TheNewbys : I liked your video as always. As a native Hungarian, let me clarify a bit our history with the Soviets. After WW II. Hungary became a part of the Soviet BLOCK but not the Soviet UNION. BIG difference. We had a well guarded border between us. There were nations who were a part of the SU (focusing on the European ones: the three Baltic states, and Ukraine, and Moldavia, and Georgia) Hungary always was a separate country with different language and culture. The Soviet Army so called "liberated" Hungary from the German occupation in 1945, and then they remained for 44 yrs to "help" to develop Communism. It seemed the majority of the citizens collaborated with the Soviet system, (mostly out of fear) but there was a large number of people who did not agree with it. They tried to brake out from this control in a bloody revolution in 1956, but failed. Hundreds of thousands left the county, many got imprisoned even executed, but also the hard line communism got a bit lighter after. There were still Soviet soilders present in the country, but more invisibly, but Hungrian communist rule the political life. Finally Hungary could manage a peacefull political transition in 1989, and all the Soviet soilders left Hungary. The "chimney cake" is a big deal in this area but not only in Hungary. Four countries" people believe it's their own original recepie. The Hungarians, the Romanians who are more likely the Hungarian minority who live in Transylvania, the Slovakians, and the Czech people. All we make the same cake on the same way, and try to attract the foreign visitors on the most touristy spots. The local citizens don't eat it on a regular basis, and never make it at home. It's more like streetfood but definitely not a fast food. Keep traveling, exploring and learning the world. I envy you.
