@ Ac Cc - You expressed it better than I (or anyone else) ever could have. Back then, standing O's were a badge of honor, and rarely occurred. Nowadays, they stand for virtually anything which has cheapened the standing O. Nowadays, they will give a standing ovation for a good bowel movement.

Yes! It's quite irritating how nowadays, practically anyone gets a standing ovation! You had to have worked you're ass off to earn them at that time, but now everyone wants and expects instant recognition for getting up in the morning and do you're job! Pathetic!!

Calleegirl I remember growing up and watching every Emmy and Academy Awards Show. I was a Tv and Movie buff since I was 12. I love Lucy for sure, and I also remember this broadcast. This is before I knew how Lucy and Desi changed the face of Television. For the last two years I have not watched any of the award shows. I still love my trivia in movies and TV, it’s just not the same anymore.

I was born the year she died. I am obsessed with Lucy. Her show is the only show I can watch over and over again and it feels like it's the first time. It never gets old. Unbelievable how it can be like that considering how many times I've watched every episode over and over again.

I cried for 3 days when she died. I have never cried when a celebrity passes, but Lucy was one of a kind and made me laugh millions of times. Her shows are all still funny to this day. Thank you Lucy for gracing this planet the way you did. There will never, ever be another Lucy.

That's the truth. It seems that everybody gets a standing ovation these days, especially guests on talk shows. The audience stands and applauds for EVERYBODY who walks on stage. A standing ovation means nothing anymore.

If there was ever an entertainer who deserved a standing ovation, Lucille Ball deserved a standing ovation.
Several years later, at the oscars, both she and bob hope we’re given a standing ovation, just from walking out onto the stage.
Shirley looks INCREDIBLE and I love how she uses humor help Lucille get control of her emotions. Class acts, the both of them!
In that moment Shirley did show class. I just wonder how much those rumors about her being nasty and rude throughout her career..not to mention what her daughter (who came across as perfectly truthful to me) has said in interviews.

Yeah, truly admire Shirley. She was a real “character,” even as far as show business folk go, but a lovable one and a genuine, versatile talent who always delivered for an audience. Her legacy to the industry, to me, is much more significant and enduring than her brother’s.

I can tell you what happened, people stopped disciplining their children, we started rewarding people for bad behavior, they started giving drugs to children to control them, we stopped making children obey the rules and criminals obey the law. We elect officials based on their looks and charm instead of their ability to do the work. We started letting people with very little knowledge make the big decisions. Alexander Pope once said, “a little learning is a dangerous thing. This world is going to hell fast. Let an uneducated 15 year old girl living in the projects get pregnant and then give her a welfare check, food stamps and a free apartment is rewarding bad behavior but guess what, she learned it from her mother and grandmother and so on and so forth. That’s what’s happened!!

Today there is waaaayyy to much technology and everyone is like me, me, me, it's all about me. Everyone has their face buried in their phones. Nobody understands true values anymore. The simplicity of life has vanished. I think the last good year was 2000. In 2001 the World Trade Center was attacked and life as we know it was changed forever. That's when all the technology started pouring in.

Lucille Ball always seemed so touched by standing ovations (this one and Kennedy Honors, etc). It’s almost like she didn’t truly believe that she was as loved as she was. I’m thankful that the world was able to see her right up until the end and everywhere she went, people showed her love and told her that she was loved.
I am glad for a brief 9 years to have walked the earth at the same time as Lucille Ball.

She was an amazing talent. From I Love Lucy, to the Lucy Show, From Yours, Mine and Ours to The Stone Pillow. Never did you hear about or see her wasted on booze or drugs. She was everyone's favorite red head. And for those that gave this a thumbs down, why don't you go sit in a corner and eat worms.
How I wish the world could go back to more innocent existence and everyone had the privilege to see the great ones like Lucy perform and show what the true meaning of class was. An American treasure indeed.💕

I can honestly say, Lucille Ball has made me laugh my entire life. I remember being very young in the mid 60’s, and it was always a treat to watch whatever show she was in. My bedtime was 9 pm, except on Monday night. I was allowed to stay up until 9:30 to watch Lucy. I was sad when “Here’s Lucy” ended, but it was probably time. I Love Lucy is probably the best comedy television ever produced, and I can only imagine, will still be on 100 years from now. Her comedy is timeless and joyful. Not like today where everything is vulgar. She was, and still is a national treasure. I remember her last public appearance, a few weeks before her death, at the Oscar show. She looked like a million bucks, and then she was gone. Her kind of talent comes around once in a lifetime and we’re all the better for laughing along with her. My favorite episode, that still has me laughing like it’s the first time, every time, “Hollywood at Last”. Who wouldn’t laugh at the scenes between she and William Holden? Her nose going up in flames? Pure genius. I think I’ve gone on too long, but I’m a fan, as should everyone else.

John, I am probably about the same age as you. I was born in 1961 and started watching Lucy in the mid 1960s as well. Starting in 1967 I LOVE LUCY reruns started on my local WNEW-TV Channel 5 at 7pm weeknights. THE LUCY DESI HOUR ran for a few years on the same channel in the late 60s and early 70s at 9pm Sunday nights. THE LUCY SHOW began reruns on CBS Daytime at 10am, and HERE'S LUCY ran 1968-74 Monday nights on CBS.
My goodness.... when the I love lucy theme song came on, it was like magic. You feel the happiness and laughter just swell up inside. Lucille Ball was royalty in comedy and in life.
I remember when she passed. I went to a gay bar that night, and the drag performers where all Lucy. It was fun and sad at the same time. Now the younger generation has no idea who she is unless they watch retro TV
I think most younger people do know of her because her legacy has been so pervasive.
But they do watch. And they laugh, just as their parents and grandparents laughed. That kind of genius comedy withstands time.

She was so ahead of her time. Without her, there would be no Star Trek. Without her nobody would have seen a Cuban man married to an American woman in 1950's America. She opened doors and opened hearts.
I remember coming home to see I Love Lucy everyday after school.
I also have gone back to the show on a streaming service, and it is super dark and wildly frightening at times.
Much like another show that I had nothing but warm memories of - The Carol Burnett Show.
So here's to Lucy. Long may her memory brighten our lives.

This is so true and back-in-the-day it was unusual for an American woman to be married to a Cuban. That was not covered in the "Being The Recardo's" film. It actually hurt Lucille Ball's career for awhile, but then came "I Love Lucy" and everyone adored this couple.
I’m only 19 but absolutely love I love Lucy. I was watching every episode and my grandma told me one day when she caught me watching it that she’s my great great aunt❤️ I never met her obviously but this video still made me tear up. I’ve always loved watching her and finding out she is my aunt just made me so much more interested and love her even more❤️
Her only sib was her brother Frederick Henry Ball (1915-2007) so if he's your great-grandfather, you've got quite a few interesting ancestors (and not just Lucy)!Thanks for sharing!

Angel Rios one of the most insightful comments about Lucy I’ve ever read, she. Did overcome so much and made a place for herself - the very top. Her only pitfall was to fall in love with a very flawed human being who had to lose , desi couldn’t shake his poor beginning , it stayed with him because subconsciously kept trying to return there. Deep down he felt he didn’t deserve a perfect life that he himself made for himself . Lucy was grateful but she knew she earned it . She died with a man who stood by her , a man who never left her down , a man she wasn’t in love with, there wasn’t a day Lucy didn’t hurt over desi although her tough upbringing told her to stop it and move on. It was still in her heart as she smokes her anxiety about it away but it never went away. It left her bitter at times.

What a special soul to have graced millions through television.

Carol Burnett said she would say, “when do you need me kid”. Maybe her tears are also from the difficult loss that she suffered as a result of her triumphs. Here was an entertainer and a force in showbiz who did as much behind the scenes as she did in front of the camera as Lucy Ricardo. We can't underestimate her contributions to television in the 1950's and 1960's. Many people know about her accomplishments beyond her iconic sitcom, but some don't know that she saved Star Trek from a very premature cancellation. That's just one thing Lucy did during her career at Desilu, a company she would eventually run solo (while doing a second sitcom every week). She knew quality as soon as she saw it, and she seemed to know what the viewing audience would take a shine to. Quite a special lady.

The theme song with Ricky singing always gets me tho lol tearfully when I sing a long especially the episode when you tell him you’re having a baby and he sings “we’re having a baby, my baby and me” get teary with that one lol and although you’re gone you still warm my heart with love, and laughter thank you Lucy ❤️❤️ #neverforgotten
It's not physically possible to watch the chocolate/candy assembly line episode with Ethel and Lucy and not laugh hysterically no matter how many times you watch it. Lucille Ball was truly a legend.

My favorite story about Lucille Ball was when the TV studios (back in the early 1950s) against her wishes refused to give Cuban Desi Arnez top billing by including his name in the title that was to be used for her new TV show, she indeed did.....because of course the "I" in 'I Love Lucy' was Desi Arnez.
