This video series has VASTLY IMPROVED my short game! My short game 100 yards and in was literally embarrassing. I took this advise to the range and after a few miss-hits, I started to hit consistent shots with great impact one right after the other. I then took it to the course and I became very confident getting the ball to the pin! Thank you so much for this video... playing golf is fun again!
This has been super helpful, thank you. I haven't taken any lessons, I'm just teaching myself through your videos and I have started to improve massively!
Rick, thank you for putting these three video lessons together. I have adopted these techniques in my pitching game and they work great. I now have control of my distance for all my wedges and 9 iron from 100 yards and closer. I feel much more confident in laying up to any distance within 100 yds. of the hole so I can attack the pin. Your descriptions of how to incorporate these techniques for distance and height control are very easy to understand. I also very much enjoy the videos of you and Peter Finch playing together and the chatter between you both while you're playing. Very entertaining, I look forward to future videos from you and Peter. Ton Mason - Houston, TX.
I improved my chipping a lot by following Phil Mickelson's ideas on the subject, He did not believe in the clock work idea but I think Phil did not understand that it was the body that turned to a point putting the arms in the time periods to start and finish. With Phil's chipping philosophy I cut a lot of strokes of my game, Yesterday I played 18 best ball using three to four balls trying to improve my game. I usually put in all balls I am playing that hole so I am also playing worse ball game as well. I used the clock work idea with the body being dominate in the swing and found that I did very well. Thank you very much Rick and Pete for doing a very good job on presenting this. Oh for those of you wondering about my Best Ball game. It was 109 degrees here in Las Vegas and nobody on the course so I could take my time and practice a lot per hole. My secret is to drink a lot of water three to four hours before going out and keep up the boozing with the H2O. I do not dehydrate so much and feel good during the whole round. Of course I am acclimated to this weather which makes a big difference as well. Las Vegas Duffer, Joel
The reason I like Mr. Shields is that I can relate to him. This video, in one golf game, helped me. I have played golf for a long time. I am 73 years old and chipping has always been my weakest link. I watched this video and followed the instructions and even my caddie and playing partner wanted to know what happened to me. Thank You JD
This video is the reason my short game improved and I managed to drop my handicap from 21 to 15 in the last 3 months. I found it very useful between 20-50 yds
Hi Rick, This instruction video was, hands down, the most helpful and the easiest to understand and incorporate into my short game. It has changed the way I play golf and has made a tremendous difference for me. So much more than any other personal lesson I have had or video lesson I have watched. Excellent stuff. Thanks so much.
Awesome advice! Took this to the practice area and course today and what can I say... it works wonders! This was always my fear shot because I thinned and shanked it most of the time, often leaving me in a worse place than before. Thanks a ton!
VASTLY IMPROVED INDEED!!!!!! Thanks Rick. I have applied this technique and thanks to a lot of poor iron shots I have had to use it - a lot. And my score have been about the same because my pitching and long chips have been so much better. Keeping my arms tight and using my body has mostly eliminated the chunks and thins and applying height control has made flop shots so much easier and I have so much confidence now under 90 yards and around the green. I used to fret about half wedge shots, now I feel like I am going to get it close (as long as I keep my dumb head on the ball). Thanks again Rick you are the best free golf teacher a guy could have. Now back to the striking irons video and practice of course.
great vid. my coach has been working with me on this very technique, and it's dramatically improved my short game. and you're absolutely correct... it's a very consistent method, because it's very repeatable. looking forward to Part 2 and 3. thx rick!
I like to pretend I’m gonna actually learn from these techniques when in reality I’m gonna go out and blade every ball with my wedge like I normally do
Superb video Rick. I watched this yesterday and took the technique to the course today. I cant believe how much better my pitching was? The key was staying connected and use rotation. Thank you, very much appreciated. I am also trying to incorporate more rotation in my full swing. 👍
I know this series is really old, but man I seriously just wanted to say thanks! Strike the ball well with my drivers and irons but man inside 100 yards I always seem to never get the contact I need with my wedges. Implemented a practice sesh on the range and engrained it, and I broke 80 the last two times I went out. No more duffs or more skulls, just great contact that stuffs my distance and leaves me close! Cannot say thank you enough. You da man!
Great video!! I have been using my body more and shots are more solid and hit the greens more. It is easy to hit with the arms and I have to think one though, “use the whole body” in the turn back and through. Thank you for sharing.
lol i completely forgot about this intro, it’s so nuts having a new youtube account, all my favorite golf and fishing channels are suggesting me super old videos i haven’t seen in 7 years lol
I have broken my personal course record twice in 8 days and this video is a big reason. Made some nice up and downs with this technique of using the body but keeping arms close to the body. It makes this shot, once one of my weak points, so easy. Thanks Rick!
Thanks Rick!! After shanking a number of pitches last week I watched your videos, practised at a pitch n putt during the week and have just come back with a PB from my local course ... including rolling one straight into the hole from 39yrds!! Great technique... easy to follow .... confidence returns to my pitch shot! Thank you again, great stuffm
Winner of a video, been searching for "is a wood the same as a driver?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Reyuhaffad Underlying Recognition - (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now ) ? It is a good exclusive product for discovering how to revealing an effortless golf swing technique minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my buddy got great success with it.
WOW, awsome video! I watched it twice and then went outside and hit about 50 balls in my backyard, more than 90% of them went up and straight :-) I used a wedge and a 9 iron. Thank you for simplifying the swing this way, it works.
Very smart lesson, Rick. I have always known how far each club will go at a full swing. I never thought that given each wedge is often hit at three or four different weights, we should essentially have three or four distances recorded for each wedge as well! This technique has eliminated my need to perform 'feel' shots inside 100m. I now simply consult my list of distances by wedge and strength. Handicap now down to low single figures. Thank you!
Hey Rick, The upper arm connection worked like a charm, especially once I hinged smoothly going back. The most important thing on the downswing is keep sternum steady (over ball) and rotate with arms connected. Thanks.
I incorporated this into my game and it has turned my short game around. Thank you Rick! I know this video is on the older side of things but it still applies.
Hi Rick, thanks heaps for this video I have watched it a few times this week and then took it to the range today and it worked brilliantly. I was far more accurate and got far more loft, heaps of loft and some backspin that I've never had. You are a genius at golf tutoring and my favourite on RUclips. Can't wait to take this to the course tomorrow.
When you talk about setting up open, are you just flaring your lead foot more open and keeping the trail foot square to the target line? Also, are you keeping your shoulders square to the target line?
Rick, love the videos, especially the equipment testing. However, this series just gave me the best practice I’ve had in years. I needed to get back some confidence, and this series was the solution.
Yet another one of Ricks life (or at least golf) saving vids. I've always feared the pitch as I have a tendency to hit the ball thin and watch it disappear on the other side of the green Went practicing my pitching yesterday and tried this method to "lock down" my arms a bit, man what a difference. Some practice balls later I found myself hitting consistently with a bit of turf taken, such a massive boost for the confidence
Awesome video mate. Finally, I have a repeatable technique for my shorter clubs. Your explanation was really easy to understand and incorporate into my game. Thanks.
very good series Rick. i would say it's one of your best vidoes. Do you happen to have a video like this for full iron shots? i struggle so much with hitting my irons consistently
Great video Rick, it's like I'm in England getting lessons from you. I just wish now I wasn't at work and on a range putting this good info to use. Keep up the good videos!!!!!
Great stuff. He covers the details you need and explains why each element is important.. After practicing this technique diligently my game inside 100 yards improved dramatically. Thanks Rick
Hi Rick, Been struggling with pitching so thought I'd hit your RUclips channel first and found exactly what I needed. I do have a question. On your set-up you want a slightly open stance which makes sense, but are your shoulders on line with the target or on line with your feet?
Quick update: I tried the armpit feel at the driving range last night with wedges, irons, and driver. I saw an immediate improvement in ball strike and flight path. It was amazing and left me excited to play again. I've always hit my irons well enough to make up for my terrible driver shots, but trying the armpit feel allowed me to hit CONSISTENT shots with my driver and slightly improved the consistency of my irons. My dad even tried it and hit 8 of 10 drives on nearly the same flight path and distance (he's historically awful with his driver)... Left him amazed and excited as well. Awesome advice Rick!!!
I really enjoyed your pitch perfect video, I though it was very informative and helped me to stop shanking my pitch shots. Watched your video and went out and practiced with confidence. Thanks
This video popped up in my video feed. Rick, it is timely because my short game is rubbish. Unfortunately it is winter now. But also I have a heated driving range and so can practice this during the winter. These are my typical 2nd shots on par 4s and 3rd shots on par 5s if I don't bottle anything elsewhere.
Thanks for the videos Rick, I play off 13 and my pitching quality has held me back, really feel this could help me get to single figures. The 'connected' pitches have been improving my short games, esp in winter conditions with less help from the bounce. Question; on my full swing (driver, long irons) I also strive for the arms and body to have that connected feel at impact. Any thoughts or ideas on this? Obvious at the top of my back swing the arms move away, but as I approach impact strive to reconnect arms with my body for better impact, and club path... thoughts please. Is this right or am I creating problems? Cheers, Ben
This is just what I needed I can hit it to 80 yards from the green and have a 45 foot putt for birdie. Thanks Rick! Think you can do a series on how to optimise practice overall?
Rick, just bought the taylormade aeroburner 3wood after seeing your reviews and all i can say is holly s**t it flies. Against the wind it just cuts through like a knife through butter. I was in shock. Keep up the vids mate 😀
Rick, you come up with some bonza tips occasionally. I haven't even had time to practice this one, but I already know it is going to help. Everything about it speaks sense - and as inconsistent approach shots are what affect my scores more than anything, I am looking forward to trying this latest tip. Many thanks!
Rick I can't tell on the video but do you keep the club head slightly open using the bounce with all these wedge shots? I have a habit of getting too steep with all my wedges hitting them either fat or thin? Thanks and great video!
Great video Rick, I was hoping you'd mention about Staying Centred which you did right at the end. I was surprised you didn't mention this right at the beginning because that lateral move/sway is so common and so destructive and if as I've found, one doesn't stay centred, all the other elements won't work correctly and inconsistency will definitely be the name of the game.
Hey Rick, you don't mention weight distribution. Conventional teaching on the pitch shot advocate more weight on the front/lead foot about a 60/40 split. What are your thoughts?
Hi Rick. Loving the videos. Does this technique still hold up? I find my wedge shots, as a righty, going to the left. Any general ideas as to why this happens? Thanks in advance.

Great video. I just made an eagle chipping in from 80 yards using this technique. Thanks Rick!

Do you have your hips open to target in the longer irons 4-7 or is only for shorter clubs and wedges ?
I agree! Great feel advice with the armpits. Do you think the armpit-tuck feel could also apply to all other clubs/shots to improve ball striking?

What are these white dots on the club face? Saw them on irons woods driver....
Could you explain pls?
