  • Welcome to Cat School. The target stick is a valuable tool that provides a clear signal to move cats from one position to another. I use it in various training scenarios, including teaching lots of fun tricks and skills, backpack training and training outside amongst all the distractions.
    This video shows you three methods to target stick train your cat and discusses overcoming the biggest challenges in target stick training.
    Thanks for clicker training with us,
    Julie and Jones

    this is going to be EXTREMELY helpful with transitioning my semi-feral outdoor cat to indoor life. She doesn't like to be picked up at all so hopefully i can guide her with a target. Thank you!

    You make it look so easy! My cat seems insulted by my using the target stick. I’m not giving up- no more treats without a little work lol

    My cat does great for finger targets but struggles with the stick. Will have to do some more exercises

    It never occurred to me that clicker training has been difficult because of her lack of food motivation, but that's probably what it is for us. We got her recently and are still trying to figure out what she likes.

    Oh shoot, I just realized I skipped the “pretend to put the treat down” part and I’m also not clicking early enough. Thank you!!!

    Thank you, I'll try to follow your recomendations. My kitten hunts the target stick, and I can't train her normally. ))))))) It seems that she's more interested in playing with the target stick then in treats. )))

      See if you can find more exciting treats and try to train her before meals so she's hungry :) Good luck!

      Can the target stick be used to encourage cat to get off counter or furniture that you do not want them on?

    • @CatSchool
      @CatSchool  2 года назад +1

      @@chattynurse Unfortunately, you don't want to do that because you will be creating a chain: go on the counter -> touch the target stick -> get a treat. In other words, you are reinforcing counter jumping. Preventing counter-jumping is a better approach.

    My cat is terrified of the sound, but only in specific situations. When I click in before giving her dry treat placed by the target stick for using her scratching pad she does fine. When I use the clicker as she is approaching it for a lickable treat she completely freaks. I'm getting her used to following the clicker without the sound for now. I will gradually add the sound later. Meanwhile, when giving her the dry treat after she uses the scratching pad I am continuing to click it, but am getting close to her as this concerns her a bit, but she doesn't freak. She just looks a bit nervous then cautiously gets her dry treat.

    Where did you find the small treat ball you use on top of the target? I’m having a hard time finding something the right size.

    Does this only work for kittens and younger cats? Can older cats be trained ? Like 11-14 years. I just want to know if it’s realistic for me to start training an older cat.

      I started to train our kitten when he was half year old maybe. Sice then he loves to learn new skills. Our older cat is now 12 yo, but likes it as well. Learns slower, but it is getting better. Depends only on your attitude to training

    my cat wants to train with the stick but she is too scared of if, she keeps her distance. any advice?

    • @CatSchool
      @CatSchool  2 года назад +2

      Try pairing food with the stick from further away. For example, show her the stick and throw the treat. Over time, gradually decrease the distance. If you need more support please consider joining our online platform: www.catschool.co/membership

      Get a clicker. Teach your cat, that click means treat. Click, give her the treat. Click, give the cat the treat. Repeat, repeat and repeat. It can take few minutes or few days when your cat connects the sound of the "click" with the treat. Cat loses attention after +- 10 minutes. Be patient

      Get them lots of scratching posts & carry them to it as soon as you see it. That, plus using it myself as a way to teach my kittens, is what helped me get them hooked on them instead. It took about 3 weeks of consistently doing this to redirect them.
