I'm Julie Posluns, also known as Julie, the Cat Teacher. My goal is to help people enrich their cat's life with clicker training. I am an Associate Certified Applied Animal Behaviourist (ACAAB). What harness is that and is it escape proof?
You can check out the Cat School leash walking kit here: www.amazon.com/CAT-SCHOOL-Harness-Leash-Step/dp/B0B4KMQJ58. While the harness was designed to be very secure, no cat harness is 100% escape-proof. Inside the booklet, I suggest multiple methods to employ so your cat is safe outside.
Escape proof isn't really safe. If your cat gets stuffed on something we don't want them to accidentally hang themselves.
LOL. I started with clicker training a few days ago and then found this channel. I'm watching this and one of my cats heard the click and came running for his treat 🤣
This has given me an idea to help my formerly feral foster. He has come so far in his socialization but still gets scared when an upright person approaches him. I'm going to try counter conditioning and see if I can adapt the method to get him over this last hump. Much appreciated, thanks so much!
Try getting him a car seat made for pets that has a harness attachment and take him to drive threws.
There's a wonderful black and white kitty in my neighborhood who steps by our house all the time, and as I don't really have my own cat to train, I've started trying to get him used to the target stick. He loves food but he's not willing to do a lot for it, plus he comes by irregularly, so it's quite the challenge. But today I pointed the target stick a bit further away and I could see him staring at it and totally saw the moment it clicked in his head and he started walking towards it, such a satisfying feeling :D

Good luck. I have neighborhood cats who visit as well and I have trained them. Each cat is a different learner. It's up to you to be patient and repetitive. Once they learn and understand one concept the others are easier to learn. You can do it❗The cats in the end will look forward to interacting with you.😸
@@sunflowerbaby1853 Oh yes, he's definitely teaching me patience! Especially with him not coming daily, getting a routine isn't so easy. I hope in summer he'll step by more often and we can make progress at a slightly faster pace :D

One of my barn cats just had a litter and once one of the kittens are old enough I am gonna take one and train her(the kitten I want is a calico so ik her gender already) and I want to train her to be a service animal for me and be able to take her out to places. It's gonna be alot of work but if I can train her right she can help me alot with my depression and social & separation anxiety.

Great video as always. I combined counter conditioning and trick training when my cat became terrified of his carrier (after a particularly stressful vet visit). I would lure him in with treats, reward, and reset. And then we would end the session with some tricks inside the carrier (top removed). He's shown a lot of progress!
I have a question about target stick, I haven't introduced it before, we just learned tricks with me pointing my finger. Would it be confusing to introduce it after we've learned 9-10 tricks?

I just began to train my cat that I adopted 2 weeks ago, he learns so fast, responded to his name without treats and learnt to do some simple tricks. Also your training kits on Amazon came with the book with very helpful instructions to teach the cat several tricks. Is there a way to train a cat to play more gentle to human or other cats? How can i get the cat to look up at me when i’m standing straight? Even if i show the treat he just keeps searching for it on the ground ignoring my talk and missing gestures or he starts to push himself to my legs while purring to ask me to give it. 🤦🏽♀️

could you do a video to show how you got jones comfortable with claw cutting to the point he presents his paw? my cat will let me snip 2-3 claws and then after that gets annoyed (despite the fact i give a treat after every snip)

Jackson Galaxy probably has videos on that. I think he uses treats near the door where the cats are seperated at the same time, using the 2nd method described in this video. Good Luck
Great video! 😀 But how do I start clicker training when I have two cats, and they can't separate during training (or anytime else). How can the cats know who I'm clicking for...? It sounds difficult to me, and I would love any help or insight.
I have trained my two cats to sit and sit up with front paws up (I'm sure there is a name in English for this... 😂), and am now trying to teach them to follow my finger and that it gives them treats... 😊

Thanks for your great videos. I just started clicker training with my two cats and I'm wondering how I should react when they don't do the behavior I'm training them for? Do I stop the training and try it again later? Or is there a way to tell them what exactly it is that I want them to do? An example is when I click and toss a treat and want them to come back to me. What do I do when they don't come back and just look at me from a distance?
I would suggest luring them to come back to you with a treat
Are there any ways to stop a cat from biting? How about stopping it from wanting to go outside (or at least stop meowing all the time because it wants to go outside)?
I have two cats. Sweety, a 13-year-old female and a Sparky, 3-year male. Sparky keeps intimidating and harassing Sweety by chasing after her in most cases when he sees her. No aggression looks to be involved. Any ideas how to train Sparky not to intimidate and harass Sweety?

Hello, Cat School. I have been clicker training my cat and he has learned several tricks, as well as harness training and going outside. The biggest problem and fear I have is that he is very scared of other people and will bolt any time another person walks close. He always runs for the house, but one day I would like to take him farther from our neighborhood. I try to prevent him from running and to sit still while giving him a treat (the meat stix you mention), but I'm wondering if there is an intermediate step that I'm missing here to help him get over his fear of people since most of the time he's too panicked to stay still and eat. He even gets scared of other members of the household if he is outside and they walk towards him in the front of the house.
Due to covid restrictions, I cannot invite people over to desensitize him to people this way.
If your cat is too scared to eat the food then you are too close to the trigger. Your cat should be far enough away from people so that he can observe them and eat the food.
How long is the requirement time to train the cat for a specific behaviour ?
There isn’t really a “requirement time” for a cat learning how to do a trick. It’s different for every cat
im trying to train my cat to get over her fear of closed spaces but i dont know how to get her into her ca house to give her a treat can you help me?
May I ask what you would do if the cat is impatient and starts chasing the smell of the treat during training (rather than paying attention to me)? Would it be better to take a break (and hide the treat) or keep trying? He's a Siamese who wouldn't stop begging vocally once he starts until 20+ minutes later..
You might want to try lowering the value of the food - working with your cat's meals instead of treats. It sounds like your cat could benefit from some self-control exercises; I think chair training would be a good place to start: ruclips.net/video/1kvdOyvrlsA/видео.html If you are still having issues, please consider joining our online class where there are lots of troubleshooting resources and you can share a video for feedback on your training.
@@CatSchool Thanks for the tips! Yes he has little self control haha... and easily frustrated. Great analysis... I'll try these exercises and see if I could find a treat that he's less excited about but still desires! Love your tutorials!
Is there any point where they no longer need the treat to behave correctly or be Unafraid?
What is another alternative if my cat is afraid of the clicker sound? I tried to give her a treat when I click but she runs away and require much coaxing to return or sometime does not return to me.
Your goal is to help your cat overcome their fear of the clicker. Muffle the sound in a sock or click it from far away so it's a lot quieter and toss a treat to your cat. I'm sure your cat can learn the click is a good sound :)

Start working with food puzzles: www.foodpuzzlesforcats.com. If your cat will work to find food in a food puzzle, you should be ready to move onto the first bump tutorial - finding food in a cup is the same concept. If your cat has no interest in food puzzles, you need to build their food motivation. Our video on treats can help you figure that out.
Where is your cat school
My cat is very food obsessed, if I had food out in a bowl like in your video, he would eat it all and growl at me if I tried to take it away. I tried hiding treats in my pocket once and he trued to bite through my jeans. Any advice?
Use the training tools - the clicker and target stick are essential for cats that are fast and grabby; the target stick keeps your hands out of the picture while your cat learns the rules. Train your cat on a chair (ruclips.net/video/1kvdOyvrlsA/видео.html) to teach some self-control. Put your treats in a treat pouch. Consider joining our online class for more structure. The good news is food motivated cats are highly trainable!!!

How can I train my cat when she’s so picky about food? She has a food allergy and can only eat rabbit, but refuses rabbit treats and wet food and will only eat the kibble if she must - she’d rather starve than work for it since she doesn’t like it
