You guys need to get a aerial photo of the property, frame under a plexiglass frame and y’all can mark up different ideas on where to place things.

yes, they need 1 color copy for their "before" Cog Hill Farm and another taken "after" Cog Hill farm. But also ask about the black & white "sketches" type & have a few photo copies made in "LANDSCAPE" size that you can draw on.
Another suggestion is to get colored mylar. Cut out shapes of the houses, barns, out buildings, chicken coops, goat gratos, and garden shack and any other buildings permenant "fixture" sized to scale of the property picture. Then place them on the land where you think you would like them to be. If afterwards you don't like it where its at move it. Better to make the mistakes on paper and be able to pick the "building" up & move it than later not liking something too small or too big or in the wrong place.
In real life you would be S.O.L. or a huge cost to demo & rebuild where you want to move it to.
Also develope that spring for emergency water. Using a hand pump & springbox, great for an off grid "guest house" you could rent out or use yourselves.
The old creek is man made with a sand bottom. The new creek is nature made with a "creek" bottom (stones like river bottoms) of course its spring fed and will be cold all year round. You might even get some brook trout if you fish.

Mary Carl is such a delight to watch, so mature for her age, she is extremely polite, modest, not impressed with her popularity, just down right loveable, smiles. Your site is one I watch as often as you post. I am an over 80+ grandma who lives alone with my small dog; due to arthritis I am challenged with walking, you are my entertainment & delight to watch on those long covid days
& nights, we are cooped up here in Washington state, not much Church, shopping & galivanting around. Your chicken coop is clean, your critters are well cared for, your gardens are wonderful, I really like the Emu, (my favorite) wish I could run like he does. smiles. You & your family are the "BEST farm family" to view in my opinion. Thank you, live long, live strong.

Vegimite - you can use it in beef stew and pot roasts - you do not taste it, and it adds a depth of flavor. The Glenn and Friends cooking channel uses marmite which is a similar product.

I almost “fell out” when Jason was talking about the solar lights on the greenhouse and he said it looked like a “juke joint”!!! I thought that I was the only one who used that term nowadays. Well... juke joints are alive and well in south Alabama and north Georgia! Congratulations on the new farm! When I was ten, Star Wars came out, and I was already playing French Horn..I fell in love with the Horn and symphonic music, I eventually won two separate auditions for fifty two week orchestras as a first chair, Principal Horn..I even got to record with John Williams, did that for twenty five plus years before becoming disabled, so yeah, tell MC to find her passion, and not be afraid of changing, and of working hard..

There is a DIY video on Facebook right now that mirrors exactly what your family is about to do and they are videoing every step of the way. It is called Good Simple Living, shows a family picture of the bearded Dad, wife and 4 kids getting ready to start their journey, and relates the decisions made and the steps they took. The father was a 14 year member of the Vancouver, British Columbia police force, married, with 4 children ranging in ages from maybe 7 to 15 (guessing) and their dream was to become homesteaders in a large area, so he retired, they moved from Washington to Idaho, got their beautiful property, and got started cutting grass and setting out their pole barn to be used as their initial home and large storage area which initially held their large trailer inside it (that they lived in for 6 months), building materials and former household items they took with them. Then, the animal pens were erected, animals moved in and each step of the way with each days construction was daily videoed step by step. Fascinating to watch what this couple were able to do together, all on their own, only bringing in additional help for certain jobs, with very limited personal construction knowledge before they started. The wife is amazing as his building partner and what these two have built is pretty impossible for most people, but just shows how a dream can materialize. I hope you give it a look from right at their start and are as fascinated at both their ideas and accomplishments as everyone is.

Try adding a teaspoon to a tablespoon of vegemite to soups and pasta sauces. Vegemite is so concentrated but it has a rich taste that enhances foods when it is used sparingly. A little goes a long way but it adds another depth of flavor to more complex recipes. :) Your Australian friend rocks! That was so thoughtful of him/her/them.

One good thing about the Pole Barn House, it would be handicap accessible. It's all on one floor and you could just walk/roll in.
I do have problems walking and steps are becoming totally out. This summer I will be adding a ramp to the door next to my driveway. I built this house in 2008, it is all one floor and open concept. But, my 3 porches have 3 or 4 steps and it's getting harder to climb.
My son recently built his house and they enter the house from the attached carport. The master bath shower is huge and you can walk/roll right into it. They do have a basement and would need a lift chair for stairs. However, they can drive the car to the back of the house with a handicap entrance just like the one on the carport. Plus all doors are and hallways are wheel chair accessible. This is their forever home and they built it for any disabilities that may or may not have as they age.
What ever you do with the new farm you will love it and it is always your decision and dreams. Have a blessed day, stay safe and healthy 🙏🥰👍👌🙏🦅🔔🗽🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸🙏🇺🇸

Please tell Mary Carl. that becoming a Veterinarian is not easy...it's a lot of schooling. My wife is Vet, our oldest daughter is currently in her 2nd year of Veterinarian Medical School. I'm a surgeon. And our youngest daughter wants to go into medicine. However she hasn't decided if she wants to animal or human medicine. Probably she'll become a Vet too. Our kids grew up around a lot of cool and different animals. Their compassion for animals is so beautiful to watch.
About 3 years ago, the State of TN brought us an abandon Mt. Lion for my wife's clinic to nurse and prepare for release back into the wild. However, the Mt. Lion (Dolly) ended up bonding with humans. And it was determined that Dolly wouldn't probably survive in the wild. Hence for the last 3 years we've had a Dolly integrated into our family. At the time we got Dolly as a 3 month old cub we just got a Doberman puppy. So for enrichment for both animals. We allowed them to play with one another. Fast forward to today, the Doberman (Abby) and Dolly, are best of friends. They both live inside and outside. Usually around midnight, both animals come in and sleep on our bed. If it's raining, both prefer inside. Just thought I would share a little family store with the Cog's and their Viewership.

I am pretty much a Homesteaders junkie . I watch several different channels ( that's how I found out about your RUclips site). A couple of them have found that it was cheaper to purchase a sawmill and fell some trees on their own homestead. I don't know what kind of trees you have but , if you have trees that you can use, why pay exorbitant prices for wood. Plus, after you have your house and everything built, and if you decide that you are done with the sawmill, you can always sell it.
I am so envious of you. We always seem to be a decade or two too late - or in my case, a half a century . You are living the life that I wish that I could have. Please, savor every minute, even the bad ones. They will make your mental scrapbook so complete.

Give it time and you’ll get used to it. If not then use in stews, casseroles and soups to flavor. Good on yer for giving it a go.

I use painted cedar fence boards for three of the chicken houses I built. Cheep and easy for this 78 year woman to handle. The price here was $1.69 each now is $1.98 each. Still workable.

As long as Marycarl can pay her bills and is happy, she will be OK. I think avian vet would be an incredible career for her. She's already got so much experience and she truly loves birds.

I believe it's inflation that's driving the costs of lumber. But I think it's also to discourage independence, because it seems it's starting in the items you need to achieve that goal. God bless Shalom

My cousin and her husband made a darling house for them and 2 children by putting together 3 railroad cars. As much as you've done with the airstream & camper, you could do it easily. It was so cute and very economical

Hey Jason, Brooke and MaryCarl, I just thought you should know that MOST chain saw bar and chain oil IS NOT petroleum-based. It's usually used canola oil so it shouldn't be of any concern regarding your cutting the hay bale with your chain saw.

I find the two of you care deeply for all things and are a pair made for each other as a mirror of thinking... no humping up about I did this or that. At least in all the right ways. As much as most all care, no one is free of a mistake, you guys fix those... a great attribute to have. I now believe in this channel more cause of honesty and integrity.
