  • I have heard a lot of high end audio speakers including not limited to wilson audio, magico, focal, martin logan, etc and I hands down think that these Alta alec speakers to be the most musical to my ears under $20~30k and are a true bargain for $9000 USD/pair

    Not to be one of the grammar police squad... but I think when you say "tilt" you really mean "toe in" or "toe out" . Tilt means changing the angle of the horizontal plane, for example, tilting the cabinet backwards to time align the tweeter with the other driver.

    • @onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475
      @onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475 3 года назад +7

      Ah, but the correct term for rotation on that axis is "YAW", (+or-). (Not "toe-in". If we feel the need to be vigilant about this ;-) ).

    • @markcarrington8565
      @markcarrington8565 3 года назад +2

      Toe-in works too, meaning pivoting around a vertical axis. Ask a race mechanic who sets up the wheel alignment of the car. 😉

    The Alta Alec sure sound very impressive. The base of this speaker to go Down to 32 Hz is great there are some power subwoofers that can't even go this low. I like the sound of active speakers because they can give a clean base. I had lots of speakers from different brands never was fully happy with them. Until I listen to power monitors speakers and they sound fantastic. I would really like to audition these.

    Hi Jay
    Thanks for the reviews you post,it's good to see/hear different speakers even though some of them aren't accesible for many of us☹.
    There is a Polish company called TAGA Harmony which are producing good speakers ,in my opinion,and I own the model tav 606 se.
    Unfortunately few reviews found on internet about this Company portofolio and those are mainly in Polish .
    I wonder why they are not reviewed by western channels?
    Can you search a bit their speakers performaces and maybe you could make a review if you would be able to access any of their models?
    Thanks
    Best regards

    Alta Alec is awesome I heard them The only brand I like better are YG Acoustics. With them you can get IT ALL pin point imaging, sweet top end and real smoothness at the same time. for the money Alta is a win. If you want endgame for 24k-250k YG is king. Alta is like a Rolex Submariner...YG is like a Patek Phillipe without the nasty service costs! Just pay once cry once. Get these enjoy them until you can get YG later in life when you have 50-100k for the next system.

    Thank you for this good video. As always honest. Very nice speakers. I myself am a longtime fan of High-end and music and High-End home cinema. I believe what you say about the speakers. I have a question. Have you ever heard the Kef Reference Model 4.2 played on good equipment? M curious. I think this model Kef sounds very good. Literally all genres. Of course tastes differ. But am really impressed with the Kef Reference Model 4.2. Normally I want different speakers every 1 to 2 years. But I have had this Kef for 3 years now and one day I will get other speakers, but I will not sell this model 4.2. They stay. Peace and love and of course High end. Greetings from the Netherlands Limburg Maastricht. Especially keep going. Find your videos very nice and interesting. Until the next guy... 👌👍✌😘😉

      I've heard both. The Alta Audio are definitely the "better" speaker. They seem to have a very good frequency response and drivers that can pump out a ton of detail. The Gershmans, however, are a warm and soothing speaker to listen to. I personally enjoy the Gershmans more, but that's because I like something fun and easy to listen to, rather than something that gives you every little detail in the recording.

      Thanks. I like the Altas for a small/ med room. They just look amazing. I’ve mostly had domes, need to try something modern but I think I’d buy a new Kef active LS50 to use with my turntable and experiment. The Gershmans would probably work great in a bigger room. I listen in an approximately 7ft triangle on the long wall of a 15 by 12 room. The Altas just look so cool but so does much of this high end or retro high fi.

The ceramic Tweeter is absolute Magic. Right now you could get their reference 2.2 speakers for 10,000 for the pair. 143 lb each with 9 in woofers 7 in inch midrange and again the magical ceramic. I made the cabinets furniture quality with multi layers and they weigh 90 lbs a piece I used high end components but I know how good those drivers sound with the right crossover. Similar design to Apogee Centaurus Slant 6 or 8. TL woofer and ribbon tweeter. However, the Apogees have BIG ribbons so the crossover is very low (well below 1kHz?). I have the 6 and it’s an amazing speaker but not capable of concert level loudness. I’ve damaged them by playing big bass. The sensitivity is also low 80s, so they need lots of potentially damaging power. For slam and concert level sound that’s clean, I have JTRs.

    The woofers appear to be Dayton Audio, and I have the 8 ohm version in my Linaeum LT1000 - which are also transmission line cabinets. The bass is wonderful. The moving mass is just 23.6 grams. I have the 8 ohm version, and this speaker uses the 4 ohm version.
    What is the crossover point for these speakers? Edit: Alta Audio says it is 2000Hz / 12dB/octave Linkwitz Riley
    And I think we could do with more transmission line speakers - many people think there are only sealed, ported, and open speakers. But transmission line is possibly the best combination of strengths, for great bass.

    That's a Tapered Quarter Wave Tube (TQWT) and was first invented by Paul Voigt in 1930, but kudos to Alta for renaming to "XTL Technology" and trying to patent 90 years old speakers loading theory, what a load of marketing BS.

      Super interesting comment - sounds as if there is a financial back-story to these. As you will know there are quite a few regarded speakers with relatively modest off-the-shelf drivers - though the materials/product cost ratio must be quite something unless they have some stupid serious caps (doubt it...) and 2 way is a lot cheaper to implement!

    Interesting review. One thing I don’t get is who buys this level of product in terms of pricing? I’m a professional with a decent income but I don’t have 9k to drop on speakers. So who does? I’m assuming your audience isn’t just millionaires so how do (relatively) normal people afford this stuff - and how can they justify paying that much? I just don’t get it. Educate me.

      It is about priorities. I spent 9K on my speakers, and it wasn't easy. I have to forgo a lot of other things I would like to buy or do. Was it worth it? Yes, because when I listen to them, it is an EVENT. With the right music, they take me places I can't go to any other way except maybe via meditation or when I run a marathon and get that endorphin high.

      As someone who sold Hi-Fi for well over a decade, the vast majority of buyers were small business owners, with a few corporate bigwigs and average Joe's, thrown in. So the audiophile who owns a auto repair shop, plumbing/electrical business, or restaurant all fit the typical profile. If you really enjoy listening to music in your spare time, chop $10k off the price of your next car purchase ( Spend $45k instead of $55k), and there is your speaker money. Pick thr right brand and they will retain their value better than any car.

    I know this tweeter: Fountek NeoX3.0, it's a good one but definitely not High End. Therefore I use Raal tweeters or Viawave, and that's what had to be used in speakers sold for such a price tag. 350€ drivers, and maybe 50€ basic crossover components ? Wait, the secret is they use Duelund CAST Cu-Sn capacitors ? In the world of hi-fi, if you know how to make gold out of lead, you become a prophet...

    • @nabildanial00
      @nabildanial00 3 года назад +3

      NeoX3.0 = $120, RS225P-4A = $60. So $360 for the drivers and maybe $200 for high-end, boutique based crossovers parts. And it is a MLTL design as well so the cabinet is decidedly rigid/inert even with cheap (but thick) MDF. Could be a cool project to DIY. Lemme fire up my VituixCAD real quick.

    • @Acoustic_Theory
      @Acoustic_Theory 3 года назад +3

      @@nabildanial00 "Lemme fire up my VituixCAD real quick." - Say the fewer than 0.05% of audio enthusiasts who are willing to bother engineering a high-end loudspeaker product from scratch. That's why comparisons of the BOM cost to the final product cost are meaningless - they neglect the expertise, manufacturing, and product support that hi-fi companies provide, all of which adds value to the final product (along with the quality of materials and finishes available). You will probably end up in a different place than Alta Audio did with your own effort, because not knowing what Alta's specific approach was to the crossover and cabinet design, you may make different engineering decisions. But if you want to really smile, use the aluminum RS225-8 as a woofer and add a paper RS150P-8 as midrange, with the same tweeter.

      I hear this a lot. Matching a high efficiency tweeter to a low efficiency TLine is not so simple. And 93dB too?
      In reality: Add in the cost of inert TL cabinets, $500 to ship them, jigs, adhesives, finishes, design expenses, labor (someone has to get paid), real estate costs, power, extensive testing and refinement...(could take months)... driver selection and prototyping, corporate overhead, ect. And someone(s) does need to make money from this to support themselves too. (Besides, i could name a manufacturer that charges $30,000 and uses a $15 dome tweeter by Peerless.) And patenting anything + defense costs a fortune too these days.
      Basically: looking at the answers to a physics exam is different than writing the test.

    • @Jayiyagi
      @Jayiyagi  2 года назад

      3 way is not always an advantage over 2 way designs. Less crossover points, the better. In fact many prefer 2 way due to it being more seamless where the drivers crosses over.

      @lanx0003 2 года назад +1

      @@Jayiyagi Got it, Thx, but my main point is, at this price point, the buyers expect to have a true full-range experience out of it. If Alta could manage to make their two-way design down to 20 Hz or lower, great. Otherwise, they might need to consider integrating it with subwoofer to do so just like Goldenear does. It is extremely difficult to seamlessly integrate a separate external subwoofer to produce a well-defined, controlled bass with fidelity. I just wish there are more competition in the "poorman" Class A louderspeaker territory for the middle class audiophiles.
