- What can you do with one of these? I run through how I created a track using a whole load of functions as a single patch on the Analog Solutions Colossus Quartz. It gave me 5 big juicy tracks on analog beef that worked together as a single entity.
There are 12 VCOs, 8 Filters, 8 Envelopes, 4 VCAs (plus 8 in the filters), 2 noise generators, S&H, random voltage generator, 2 spring reverbs, 2 ring mods, 2 32 step analog sequencers, an oscilloscope, touch control keyboard with 16 step sequencer, 2 31x15 pin matrices, a 10 channel stereo analog mixer, and 2 XY joysticks... ie a fair bit to play with. All analog of course.

Can’t afford one but very glad that synths like this are being made. Great demo as well.
That's usually my go-to response to cool things I can't afford too. I just love to know that stuff like this exists somewhere and makes it into the hands of people who gets a lot of joy out of the potential for self expression it has. If I had the money and space for something like this, sure I'd get me a Colossus, but I am also happy with what I have.
Where Moog left off, Analogue Solutions took it from there.
indeed and while I cannot afford one, I love my smaller scaled down Analog Solutions Leipzig a lot.
Looks more like EMS Synthi 100 to me.
It's amazing that there's a company out there who are willing to create these massive semi-modulars and I'm so happy they got one of these into your hands. Look forward to hearing more from you with this incredible piece of craftsmanship. They need to get one of these to Vince Clarke!
Fantastic machine. If I won the lottery my order would be straight in. It does sound fabulous
"Can it do modular beeps and bleeps and blops". Otherwise known as robot farts.
It's good fun watching you play with this. The stuff of dreams. Thanks!
This synth is such an ambitious project. A very rare company will dare to develop such an expensive and bold kit of musical hardware. Obviously this thing was built with love to analogue synths of the early era. Will it become as iconic as a system 100m some day?
This video was a real treat! Thank you for sharing this, Starsky.
The colossus series definitely pushes the envelope
all 8 of them !!
pun intended 😛
What a Great video! I'm loving the sound of Analogue Solutions!
Great work! Especially liked the outro - thank for sharing :)
I’m in love! This is beautiful.❤
WoOoW, what a great track and demo! I'm quite happy that this video was not filled with 15 Minutes of uninterupted bleeps and blops, instead you made it hard to sit still 😄
Analogue Solutions make some fantastic gear that's for sure.
Before you take it back you should definitely patch it up to
be an 8 voice poly synth monster
Epic synth! Epic demo track! thanks for sharing. :)
Fantastic video, I loved watching it. This makes total sense. My end game that cured my Gear Acquisition Syndrome for good was to buy an EMS VCS 3 Mk I in great condition, many years ago. After that, my lust to buy more analogue ceased. The very long and productive journey of Tom Carpenter came to a similar conclusion and Colossus was created.
I sold my VCS3 to the founder of Clavia a long time ago, they used it for analysis to model their Nord synthesizers. Thought I made a deal, selling it at three times the money I bought it. Today turns out it is six times or more, but yeah... You can make a life altering decision, buy the Colossus, and it will be the ultimate rabbit hole for you to go deep deep down for the rest of your life. You will never regret it.
Wow! That was amazing.
OMG! I don't even wanna know what this thing might cost. Marvellous device and I really liked your patches. More of this and stuff like this, please!
over 100k easily
Tom builds great synthesisers!
I love my Telemark v2 + Oberkorn mk3
This is so cool it’s like the kinda poor mans colossus. It is very beautiful 🥰
Best Colossus demo so far.
I had the privilege of playing with a Synthi 100 in Uni...great to see a re-envisioning of that classic...if I had the $ and space, I'd buy one for sure.
What an absolute dream.
The sounds of course could be generated in a multitude of other ways. But the the massive interface takes it to another level.
Yeah the size is great. It draws you in.
Pure Joy 😊
Fantastic and I’m not even into modular. I just love analog synths.
you need to release this track my dude. wow. amamzing.
Cheers.
When you have something like this, do you need anything else ? 12 VCOS 4 + 4 filters 😍 Impressive
Wow, now you know what happens when you mix Supermang with Synthesizers.
This is fek off sounding, that bass is so rubbery, reminds me of Underworld stuff.
I love you use the keyboard to transpose which can be a limiting factor of your set OR it enhances it as you're only as creative as what *you* do live.
This is the ultimate system imo, it's just so hands on, I'd prolly prefer it in an angled solution, just means you can get to the bottom stuffs easier, I'm lazy but with your back Supes, who cares?
Thank you so much for making this vid, it proves a few things, people who say modular isn't musical clearly are clueless on how to make music in the 1st place.
If you know signal flow, then you should be able to comfortably make music with modular.
Yes this setup goes beyond some others, but it is also very well laid out, you still have to patch in everything, I just see it as an absolute playground.
Thx Kent, you're a STARsky.
What a beast. Great synth too 😂
Cheeky.
thank you!
Wow..this is huge..!
masterpiece
You can also definitely tune the oscs to track nicely and in tune with each other over a large range using an external sequencer with scaling function if you wish! It's pretty solid in that regard actually.
Thanks… I was trying to use this as a self contained unit for the demons. You can scale the CV on half of the matrix inputs but it’s very sensitive. If I was keeping this I’d definitely look at something to make scaling easier on multi VCO tones.
@@StarskyCarr cirklon does it well!
Bravo.
I just sniggered to myself at the prospect of what that behemoth would cost if it was built with motorised faders and presets!
nice so how did you afford to buy now just one but four of these bad boys? These along with Moog modular, Serge and Buchla Skylab would be fun indeed.
Haha… it’s on loan. But I’m hoping AS forgets where they left it. 😂
Really nice to see a demo of this 🙏 Tom needs more of this ❤
you will get a message .. had an idea !
It's for things like this I have a sub in my office
I heard it once and i never want to hear it again
(until i can afford one 😂)
what external speakers would you run this through to get the ultimate experience?
That’s a difficult question to answer. Good monitoring is important and depends on lots of factors. Size of room, personal taste, budget etc. I use Neumann KH310 in the studio and Dynaudio LYD7 when filming - settled in theee after many different combinations over the years.
I wonder how binding the setup is. As in: To what degree does it determine your sound? Curious, but hard to test I guess. Probably a bit unreasonable to ask you to produce an album on it, just for me to get an idea of how "boxxed in" on is with such a colossus.
I’d love to make an album on it 😂 I’ll see if I can keep for a few more months… or a year… or two!
Whaaaaaaatttt????? No menu diving.... Balderdash!!!!!
Really cool hopefully you got a couple videos of just music out of before you had to send it back
Okay, gonna kidnap me a Saudi prince and get me a couple of these.
Between this and the Super Gemini we're so spoilt for new gear at the moment. How many mortgages can you have on your house?
👏👏👏👏

SC...did you purchase this mammoth?
Unfortunately I’m not that loaded! It’s in loan. Playing with it today for a clubbing TV episode.
Only synth costing over 2k currency worth the price.
🎧☺️
My shite phone doesnt do this justice.
Easily the best Colossus demo so far!
What is all that? No wonder they call it one of the 7 lost wonders of the world.
tell us about your lyd 7
What do you want to know? I really like the Dynaudio sound. I’ve had BM6, BM10s BM15s plus the Air system. So I know I’m in good hands. I use these as secondary monitors, my main are KH310s, but I still need high def when not in the studio like here.
@@StarskyCarr is the Lyd series better than the previous series?
@@mohammadsadeghfathi what was the previous series? But IU have ti say I've never put them together. My favourite was the passive BM15s, but after buying a air of eggs they sounded really boxy - weird I know, which is when I decided to go for more modern boxes.
Why not just buy a Moog modular? Everyone copies the Moog modular anyways.
This one’s cream.
my Virus is portable and can do more and sound just as good just saying, 2k versus 50k
I’ve got a Virus… it’s a different thing altogether. When it comes to things this expensive price comparisons never stack up. First class vs carriage - budget car vs Bentley… never makes sense!
The original was so striking because of the Synthi 100 look, but this might actually make more sense (as much as this could ever nake sense).
I love what you've done here. You have really shown this instrument for the powerhouse that it is. As I mentioned on Instagram, I'd not yet heard anything convincing from the Colossus up until now. It looks lovely but all the videos have been mediocre at best and never shown anything unique that couldn't be done with other gear. Here by going through the patching and also by having something very musical, plus the noise excerpt, you've managed show what the possibilities are. I hope that AS let you keep it for awhile longer so that you can go really deep.
It struck me that you have a real talent and knowledge for music and synthesis.
Another dofference is that the quartz mixer is bigger than the colossus... colossus only has 6 mixer channels, not 10.
Aaah…. I edited out myself saying a ‘six channel’ mixer and had no idea why I’d said it! Must’ve read it somewhere ages ago!
@StarskyCarr I just realised...
6 mixer channels that can be panned on the horizontal panel, and an additional 4 inputs on the vertical panel that can't be panned but have independent pots for volume control. Although vertical pots are labeled 1-4, they should be thought of as 7-10. I think they feed the stereo outs direct and are not linked to mixer pots 1-6. So indeed, it is actually a 10 channel mixer. 6 pan-able and 4 mono/centred. 7-10 mix inputs are only available on jacks and not pins.
love your channel thanks for the video..
colossal size and cost at $7k for one.. I can spend it much more wisely on eurorack and have more options and portability..
agree while I love such projects the monster Doepfer modular eurorack was less expensive and more fun to build with more choices and better sequencers and oscillators.
Ok I've got about 12 quid in the bank, how much do I need to add to buy this?
6888
Per unit
@@akagerhard each box
@@antitheist2000 You're both right. That's crazy. The correct answer thus is: 20688. I was pleasantly surprised with 6900 quid, but 20688 is a bit steep, even for a colossus!
@@akagerhard*holy fuck.*
Act like it's the early 90's La........ some texan just walked in and stole the colossus... swear down...
