Hi Harry. The best part of this video was you saying that over the years you have learned to relax and become more playful. As a photographers assistant, many moons ago, the uptight, insecure, pain in the ass photographers were a nightmare to have to spend time around. However, the relaxed, playful, openminded ones were a joy to spend time with for the clients and myself. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Brilliant. I had a friend that was a huge Radiohead fan and he lived in Oxford for a while. He once walked past Thom York in the street, and because he'd spent so much time looking at the Radiohead posters on his wall, instinctively said "Morning Thom" like he was saying hi to a colleague or friend. A few steps later, it hit him and he turned to see Thom scratching his head, trying to place who the random guy was, that acted so familiar.
Thank you for sharing this story. It’s heartening to hear that this absolutely brilliant band is made up of individuals who are equally as thoughtful with how they interact with others.
this is so awesome. photography is just as much of an art as music, & it’s nice to see musical artists have respect for people who work in other mediums.
Just first class and a touching story of a great band…. Love the idea of the second shoot. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us, I have learned so much from you already
There is more - extremely valuable - practical advice in this video regarding how to shoot musicians/bands than in any explicitly how-to video I have ever seen. And with my very favourite band. This is just brilliant--thanks so much for sharing! (I can see why Colin was so interested in your photographic work - since he's just released his own book of photos of the band. And he's always seemed like such a nice, down-to-earth bloke, too. As his response to the jacket incident demonstrates. What a cool guy!)
Came here to say the same about Colin's book. Got mine a few days ago, he's clearly a great subtle photographer, no organised shoots but excellent at capturing a moment.
Thank you so much for these videos - Harry, you're a really engaging storyteller and a sterling wordsmith. I'm looking forward to descending the rabbit-hole of the rest of your channel!
I enjoyed this story - thank you for sharing it. It's great to hear insight like this from people who lived and breathed it. I got double enjoyment from it as a rare shooter of film still, and a fellow Hasselblad shooter. Loved seeing those 120 Tri-X strips.
Love the story of both shoots and jacket. Going to go out on a limb here and suggest that your videos should be curriculum material for any course that includes portrait photography. I don't give such a compliment lightly. There are many great portrait photographers out there who maintain an enigmatic presence and keep their approach and techniques closely guarded; but your management of ideas, design, composition, and most importantly; getting along with people (with a bit of added pleasant pushiness) is an inspiration.
I have listened to Radiohead practically daily since I was 16, super envious you got to do this job, crazy that you got to photograph them before they really took off. The idea to have them take the photos at the end was also so fun and on their wavelength. As always thank you for sharing your stories! Edit: Love the Colin story at the end! It makes sense considering that he is releasing his own photobook this fall on Radiohead.
Very nice... and especially the moment when you tune the mood with the background music... very subtle yet noticeable, gives a nice sub-tone to the speech... Thanks!
I do remember how around 2003 I had an mp3 CD with several Radiohead's albums. It was the time when I started listening to their music more and more. The booklet that came with a CD was full of band photos. I still remember how I liked Colin's black leather jacket! I was looking for a same kind of jacket for years and found one online only this year haha.
Interesting as always, and a treat to hear about finding some regular old human rapport with the bassist in the band. Possibly the best shot of yours I've seen 08:18
While visiting a friend in Oxford we took a Sunday morning walk to a shop round the corner from their house. Tom York was walking towards us on the other side of the street. He looked very rough. Moments later walking out of the shop was comic and actor Rory Macgrath. He looked even more hungover. No camera on me at the time.
@@fredandharryborden I doubt they hung out together. Or even knew the other was close by. Oxford like London the chances of spotting a famous face in the street is greatly increased.
Always been a huge fan of Radiohead’s visual artistry as much as their music. Stanley Donwood is one of my favourite artists as a result (similar thing going on with Underworld and their creative agency, tomato). Now I have another photographer I have actually loved since seeing your work in Select and really all over the UK music press in the 90s (I was addicted to music and computing magazines as a kid, they were my internet before the internet) I gotta say I always love hearing these tales of Radiohead being amazingly nice people, they’ve definitely mellowed with age as well and I’m as happy for them as for those who have to deal with them day-to-day, haha! Sadly I’m a fan of some music made by slightly less nice, or should I be kind and say slightly more uncompromising, even those with allegations amongst them - the fact is, if one wants to be precious about the moral conduct of the people behind the music one listens to, then very few musical products will actually make the cut - particularly where classics are concerned. So yeah it’s ultra cool to hear of unbelievably huge artists who obviously express a lot of their own incompatibilities with our modern mores, but somehow manage to retain their compassionate kindness - as we all should. Ok shut up now Chris. Thanks for these videos.
Sorry but the laws of alternative rock photoshoots say the band members should stand outside, with several feet distance, looking bored in a random direction.
As established by the prototypical rock band, who everyone from The Beatles to Radiohead to Zeppelin to Rage Against the Machine look up to…. Faith + 1
Quick note on the technical side of things - the audio on this one seems a bit quiet and slightly muffled, lacking a little in treble. Really enjoying your videos. Absolutely cracking shot of Radiohead taking their own photo under the lighting rig btw. Peace x
Thanks mate much appreciated. I had to mess with the audio as Harry's jacket was rubbing against the mic. Such a nightmare but appreciate the heads up! Glad you enjoyed as well :)

This channel is a goldmine for photographers. Thank You for sharing!
The photo of Radiohead under the octabox is such a classic. Great to hear the story behind it, and more.
Thank you! Always appreciate your comments and glad you enjoyed :)
I love these stories where Harry does shoots years apart. They are always so well delivered.
Thank you Harry, what a lovely story told by a great orateur and the nicest photographer on RUclips.
Very kind thank you!
What a great story!, these small vignettes into your working life are fantastic, more please!
👍
What a lovely bloke (Colin).
Radiohead have a savage body of work.
Check out the drummer, Phil Selway, his solo album, 'Familial' (released 2010)
Your channel is so informative. Straightforward and simple. I love hearing the 'behind the scenes' stories.
Thank you ❤🙏
Your stories are like an extravagant dessert you haven't expected and they sweeten the whole week a little.... ty!
Very kind thank you, comments like these are the reason we make the videos!
I just bought his book, after watching your post. Great stories, and subscribed 👍

I absolutely loved this story / video! What a great tale. Big Radiohead fan and photography enthusiast. Good work! 😊
Probably a large reason Colin stayed back is because he is also a photographer
He's a great photographer.

Totally! Thanks for the comment :)
Your style of presenting and stortytelling made me a subscriber. Nice one.

As a lifelong Radiohead fan, musician and photographer, I think this story is brilliant.
No need to qualify yourself, mate. You can absolutely just write “I think this story is brilliant.” and it is perfectly valid. ❤️

I love them as well. I will definitely be trying to get Harry/Colin's Jacket one day!
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you. Love the Hassy contact sheets
I'd love to hear the Ice-T story!! Absolute pure legend! Loving your videos, muchos gracias amigo
It was pretty memorable. We'll do it soon...👍
Everything I've ever learned about the Radiohead lads has only made me love them more.
Cool band, amazing art. Thinking about that new Colin photography book.
Very nice... and especially the moment when you tune the mood with the background music... very subtle yet noticeable, gives a nice sub-tone to the speech... Thanks!
Thank you very much, glad you noticed. It can be so hard finding good copyright free music.
What a great story! Subscribed
Thanks for the sub! Plenty more stories on the way! 😁

These are great, I don't think anyone is doing anything as entertaining or enlightening.
Thank you!
Hah, fantastic Harry. Thank you for that story. Isn't it lovely how much kindness is out there?
Indeed. It's been my experience that most people are inherently good. 😊
This is amazing, I can't imagine the feeling of receiving that signed album (as a massive Radiohead fan)!
Yep - we are also huge fans. I am definitely getting my hands on that jacket one day from Harry!
Interesting as always, and a treat to hear about finding some regular old human rapport with the bassist in the band. Possibly the best shot of yours I've seen 08:18
Thanks for the kind words!
You'll likely have seen that Colin has a photo book out soon.
Yep- we are actually heading to his book launch, excited to see it!
Radiohead was always about pushing the boundaries. There is no other band like them on this planet.
great video, thank you for sharing
Colin sounds like an awesome guy
What a fantastic story!
Also saw a few seconds of Peter Capaldi! Would love a video on him 👍🏻
It's on the list - We just keep remembering people we can do videos on!
@@fredandharryborden ooh I’d love to see the list of people you CAN’T do videos on
What a great stories you have!🙌
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching :)

He rocks the dishevelled look very well. 😂
Brilliant stuff - Colin always seems to have a rep for being a throughly decent bloke
He is really kind. After this video he invited us to his book launch which he didn't have to do.
