      Yeah that episode on level 12 with the trolls where they could have finished me off with a stronger hit was one of several lucky points. And without a super jacked-up mace or a two-handed sword, I can't see how this game can be beaten. I feel like there will never be enough special weapons (e.g. wands) to defeat tough enemies without eventually having to go hand-to-hand.

    Winning Rogue is a great feat, congratulations! I tried to beat it many times but never went after level 16. I was only able to complete the game by cheating with the save files.
    A small question: any reason why you didn't use the diagonal movements (keypad 1-3-7-9 in the DOS version)? A sort of self-imposed challenge or you were playing on a laptop?

      I thought that the point of the OG game was to Save a file but when you reload that save file you can't save scumm to get the win. If people that want to cheat at this game they use what I heard of as batch files. I'm not versed in using DOS. Only have the commands in DOSBox to play the game. Like when you load up a save file you can't revert back to that said save file if you know what I mean. How the original designers intended it to be. Press Capital S to save the game. To load a default savefile in the DOSBOX after you mount the game something like rogue/r OPPS rogue.sav to save.

    Thank you so much for this video! Ive never been able to find the amulet and now i can finally see how the endgame looks like. I expected dragons to be the worst enemy, but i can see that they are not aggressive and in the end, griffins are the real assholes. Sometimes you were extremely lucky ! But i guess you need to be to be able to finish this game. I've learned a few tricks by watching you playing, so i guess i will try once again to finish it by myself. But i will probably fail lol

      Its definitely better to be lucky than good in this game. You probably noticed a couple of times where I could have been taken out by trolls in the early stages. Re: dragons, they normally will chase you when you enter the room, but since I was wearing the ring of stealth, they didn't attack. But yeah, in my experience, without a really powerful mace or 2-h sword and some special magic item, griffins will take you down every time.

      @@janjic , here's one thing that might help against medusas: if you meet them in a door or passageway and get confused, press "f" and then the direction arrow toward (or away) from the M. 3 things could happen -- you attack the M, you run in the other direction, or no turn is played (nothing happens and you can try again). Normally "f" and a direction will move you an unlimited number of spaces in that direction until you hit an obstacle, but when you are confused, it doesn't do the same. This gets me out of some jams (e.g. when fighting M at 1:02:26)

    Man, that was a gamble on the Jabberwock in Level 23. They could have up to 120HP, but you killed him after just 4 hits. Didn't even throw darts or arrows from afar first...great job though!

    • @daveanthony7351
      @daveanthony7351  Год назад

      So I had the balls to tackle the Jabberwock because when I first got close to it, you may notice I got that "Your mace gives off a flash of intense white light" message. That's because when my weapon got vorpalized on level 8 (approx 9:35 mark), it got vorpalized for a specific enemy,. However, I didn't know what enemy that was until level 23 and I got that message. "Vorpalized" means that for that specific enemy, you can add +4 to your weapon's dexterity and strength when fighting hand-to-hand. It was a calculated risk but one in which I had probability on my side. I wouldn't have fought hand-to-hand had I not seen that "flash of white light" (meaning voraplized weapon) message.

    I'm currently at the point where you're on Level 9. At this point I'm still very surprised you beat the game with this run. Other than the mace, the double whammy on cursed armor made it look like it was going to be a bad run.

    • @daveanthony7351
      @daveanthony7351  Год назад +2

      In my experience, the armor is not all that important. Don't get me wrong -- having real high armor means enemies may swing and miss you slightly more often, but high armor value doesn't seem to lessen the damage you receive when an enemy hits you. Strenght points and rank/experience level are more influential in this respect (getting to experience level 9 allows you to fight trolls effectively for instance). Also wearing a ring of stealth is the ultimate game changer for later levels.

  • @Muqqua
    @Muqqua 3 месяца назад

    Why do you unequip the ring of stealth in corridors?
    In case Dave doesn't reply, does someone else know?

    • @masondelang1403
      @masondelang1403 3 месяца назад +1

      I think because rings, when worn, have this weird side effect of making you hungry more often, which burns through your food. (This is a very strange part of the game.) The stealth ring has the greatest value in rooms rather than passages, so some people might take them off when traversing passages, especially if they're short on food. One exception to this ring/hunger rule is a slow digestion ring which makes you hungry LESS often.

    I've beaten this game two years ago, now that it's on Steam I'm playing it again :-) But it's difficult, those bloody griffins are screwing with me and the ur-viles are hard to hit.

    • @daveanthony7351
      @daveanthony7351  3 года назад +2

      The ur-viles have super high armor and aren't usually easily beatable until you reach level 11. If you happen to have a staff of striking that will hit it every time. Staffs of drain life will usually defeat them immediately if you have HP >= 60. Other wands (lightning, fire, etc) will hit them with decent frequency as long as have decent strength. But they are real bastards, no doubt.

    • @janjic
      @janjic 3 года назад +1

      @@daveanthony7351 Thanks for the tips! Usually I'm highly suspicious of staves and wands and try to use them only as the last resort - except for my favorite ones, namely those for slowing monsters and those for polymorphing them. I'll try this strategy next time. I usually start running straight for the exit as soon as I reach level 16 and if I meat ur-vile in the process, I often use potions for freezing or confusing on them (if I have them, of course).
      On an unrelated note, do you know how to compare the strength of different kinds of weapons? I know that two-handed sword is obviously stronger than my starting mace, but if I have, say, a mace +2 +3 and find a two-handed sword +0 +0, which one should I keep?

    • @janjic
      @janjic 3 года назад +2

      @@awaynergy5147 No, those will probably get you killed. Griffins are too strong for them. Until you get strong enough to fight griffin hand to hand (which usually won't happen before finding the amulet), if you have to face it, try using one of these strategies:
      1) If there's a maze nearby, run for it. Griffin won't go into it, but will wait at the room entrance. So you go to the maze, regain health, go back to the entrance, hit the griffin, get hit in the process (but only once!), retreat and repeat. Works every time, unless something appears right behind you.
      2) Use the wand of slow monster. When he gets next to you, zap it with the wand. It will hit you immediately, but if you survive that first hit, you get two moves for his one. So you move back, he will move next to you again, you hit it, it misses the move, you retreat, he follows you, you hit it again, it misses the move, you retreat... and repeat 6 or 7 times, depending on your strength and weapon. This should work similarly if you have the potion of haste self.
      3) Throw the potion of paralysis on it and run for your life.
      4) Throw the potion of confusion on it and run for your life. Alternatively, you can try to kill it while it's confused, but that's a bit risky, since it can probably kill you with two or three hits.
      5) Use the scroll of hold monster and run away.
      6) Use (i.e. drop) the scroll of scare monster and kill it. It won't attack you while you are standing on the scroll. But this scroll is best saved for when multiple monsters attack you at the same time.

    • @daveanthony7351
      @daveanthony7351  3 года назад +2

      @@awaynergy5147, As pointed out by @Aleksandar Janjic, griffins are too strong to be taken down in a single blow by the staffs. Maybe 2 hits from a lighting, fire, or cold but it's a risk since they won't hit every time and charges are limited. Slow-monster staffs work as does standing on scrolls of scare monster. Other than that, scrolls of hold monster or monster confusion may buy you some time to create some distance from the griffin and then maybe you can throw bolts or arrows.
