I was taught when doing cursive that you shouldn't lift your pen between letters so I never thought I was doing that wrong until now. Thanks so much for your help!
Yes! That is true for formal cursive, but hand lettering is kind of different. It's like a combination of a freestyle cursive but adding in the thick downstrokes and the thin upstrokes... because of that factor, it's helpful to break up your strokes so that you can refocus on how hard you are supposed to be pushing! At the beginning, it can be hard to transition from thick to thin strokes without that little pause. If you were just doing cursive with a pencil or regular pen, you wouldn't have to lift up your pen though - I hope that makes sense!
Hey! Quick question. What is the name of that green pen you used in the very beginning? Can I find it on Amazon? Also, thank you for creating such a helpful and candid video!
Thank you!! I seem to never get notified of reply comments... only the 1st comment people make! But yes Marvy uchida colorin brush markers - I love them so much!
Miss Option yeah! plus it's easier for me to control and my work looks a lot better with it than when i use brush pens. it's also really cheap, and as a broke college student, it's honestly heaven for me.
trust her when she says it takes time to get used to your brush pen, and it takes a lot of practice. it took me a week to get used to the brush pen and i’m still continuing to practice my calligraphy. practice really does make perfect
#4 and #5 are so true of any creative enterprise. I can't tell you how many times I've had to tell people to just keep practicing, don't be discouraged by someone who's been drawing for years and years especially when you are just starting out! They didn't start out at the level they are at, and I promise expensive supplies are not a shortcut. I'm really glad you brought this one up.
8:12 My face was stuck in a position where I just opened my mouth and opened my eyes wide open for 5 seconds straight when I saw purple ink coming out of a gray artline stix
Just started learning modern calligraphy. I got super excited to be able to make the letter “a”. It was awesome. Those basic strokes are critical. Thank you so much for your time.
I got a little notebook when I started hand lettering, to practice in class (ha i know :)) and looking back I'm just really proud of how far I've come. Thanks for making this!
Thank you so much for posting this video. Many hand letterers and calligraphy people make it look so effortless, so when I see my work it looks like chicken scratch. Thank you for sharing :) I feel better now :)
Practice really is the key. I'm a beginner at hand lettering and wanted to try differents pens. I bought one tombow dual brush and was disappointed because I didn't like it. But I kept trying and after months of practice (not every day but from time to time), I think I'm beginning to understand how to write with it. I'm also a lefty so I don't know if I'm having more difficulties than a right handed person 😅 Anyway, thank you for the tips!
As someone literally two days into hand lettering/calligraphy, this video was a HUGE help. The rest look interesting as well! I will be subscribing, watching more, and keep this video in particular up when practicing. Thank you!
I just wanted to tell you THANK YOU. I wanted to start hand lettering for a while, but it always looked intimidating and overwhelming, so I never started. Thanks to you, I feel that it is possible. 💖💖💖
i've been practicing hand lettering for months now.. for some reason, i find it sooo difficult on thin stroke using brush pen like Tombow dual brush or Koi brush pen.. Only fudenosuke pen works well for me at this moment. U make it soooo easy.. i just cant figure out what else to do. :(
Hanafi Ishak you might also want to try harder tip brushes first to try and get the thin strokes. Soft tips are harder to control and get a thin up stroke without being shaky
I agree, comparison of your old to your new is actually hilarious!! I still have a LONG way to go, but looking back at when I started, I've made huge leaps! It makes me feel a lot better about where I'm going and makes me want to keep going!
I love calligraphy and have been wanting to learn it for years now and then finally doing it. I have watched so many videos on calligraphy and they either confuse you or they just don't know how to teach another person and it shows in their videos. You are a gifted and natural teacher. I subscribed instantly after just watching you for a few seconds. Thank you so very much for making the videos and for being such an excellent teacher.
This was a really great video! “I will not compare myself to strangers on the internet!” Wow that’s good! And it’s so simple but I think we’ve all done it at least once. Like you said we have no clue how much time they’ve spent on perfecting their craft. Awesome! I needed that refresher!
Your tips have made my brush lettering many times better than before. I was making the mistake of not lifting the pen. But now that I have corrected it, I can seriously see a marked improvement. Thanks for this video.
I've been doing handlettering for a while, but I stopped doing it, sadly. But now I want to start with it just again, because it makes me feel calm and I get rid of stress or anything. And those tips are really useful! Thanks a lot, keep up the good work... and the lovely drawings!
i was writing slow at first and i thought i was doing it wrong so i started writing fast. i was writing each stroke individually then i starting writing in a whole stroke. basically, this video made me realise that i should trust my gut more. thanks so much!!!

I remembered watching this video when I still don't have brushpens.. And the purpose of watching is bcs it's so satisfying.... But now I'm back bcs I've afford my very first brushpens and I'm learning calli for real nsjdjs
I've never seen anyone else using the Marvy Uchida Colorin for brush lettering. I picked up three different packs of them (pastel, natural, and primary) and I really like them. It's is so nice to see someone else using them since most videos feature Tombows.
Yes!! I totally agree! I bought them not knowing what they were, but couldn't pass up the colors and they turned out to be one of my very favorites! Thanks for watching!
Your talk about comparison motivated me a lot. I compared myself to others who draw my style and though every one who sees my art says its really beautiful i feel like i would stop comparing now. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😁😁😁😁
i practice almost every day and fit in hand lettering whenever i can. i have a whole sketchbook dedicated for hand lettering. practice definitely helps especially when wanting to learn how to do something new. 😁
This video helped me crack the code to handlettering! Instant improvement with these tips, especially the point about lifting your pen! I'm off to take advantage of your sale! Yay!! And THANKS!!
The reason why write so fast is that my hand is too shaky! I know I'm not meant to be an artist, but man, I like hand lettering a lot, even though all of my creations end up looking terrible bc of my innate disadvantage :/
Actually your shaky hand is perfect for landscape artwork! Nature doesn't have "straight" lines. Look at mountains, tree branches, rocks; you can create magic.
three years late, but I only draw lines fast bECAUSE I'm an artist. It's actually an artist's techniques to draw lines and curves fast to avoid making them shaky, ever see why check marks are almost always smooth than slowly drawing on an underline? The issue is that lettering is different, slowing down can help make it easier to switch from a hard to a soft brush stroke, it's a complete different technique than what's taught for lineart based artwork. As someone who did cartoons and manga art before lettering (and has shaky hands), it's a pain to write slowly.
This literally helped me! When you said that you should go really slow when hand lettering, I did it and I saw MAJOR improvement on my writing. Thank you so much!
This is exactly the encouragement that I need!! I’m at the stage where I can letter, but I just hate my handwriting and keep finding myself throwing away perfectly good words because “they’re not good enough”. Thank you so much!! Also, I also frayed my tombows in the first week because of printer paper ;)
Thank you so much for sharing! I totally understand - it took me a long time to quit picking apart every individual letter and just take the entire piece for what it is! It is definitely a process but a super rewarding one! Thanks for watching! (and ugh to the paper! I feel like tomboys should come with their own paper! Haha!)
This is a great post. Thank you so much for the tips and the encouragement. I’m brand new to hand lettering and watching you or others do it so quickly and effortlessly frustrated me because I didn’t think I was doing it correctly, or that All of my practicing was just wasting time. Your “real time” lettering was a HUGE help for me. :)
I haven't tried a lot of hand lettering but in general when I write or draw as a left handed person, with for example gel pens, I angle my paper and shift my supporting point away from my wrist. Maybe try to think back to how you would write on a white board and see if you use any special techniques that you can use elsewhere as well. 😊
I'm so happy that RUclips suggested this vid! I love #5, especially as a beginner! It's hard to remember that we dont know how many times someone tried to write something perfectly BEFORE they posted it! "No comparisons with strangers on the internet!" YESSSSSSSS! You've earned a new sub in me!!
Thank you so much for watching & commenting! I TOTALLY agree! It's so hard not to compare or think everything someone does is perfect all of the time! But we are all at different levels and having different types of days (like my over caffeinated days my lettering is all kinds of crazy! Ha!) so I'm all about progress not perfection! Thanks again!
The comparison comment is so true. I am guilty of watching video of video and inspiration quickly turns to comparison. The sped up videos do make it look effortless and I loved how you slowed it down and did it in real time. I think that really helps people see that it takes time. This video was so helpful in breaking down misconceptions! I learned so much! Lift your pen! Who knew? Haha.
Yes! Thank you so much for watching! And I am definitely going to try and add more realtime lettering into my videos! It's so hard to do an entire video in realtime because sometimes I have an hour of footage that would be so incredibly boring to watch in realtime - but I will try to add more clips in to show it for at least a little bit! Thank you for commenting!
annaa ! Ik this is late but that’s what I thought before I saw this video, because I have excellent cursive (I learned it before print) so I thought I was supposed to do brush lettering the same way. This explains why it was so hard 😅
I wanted to step up my bullet journaling by hand lettering and you videos are awesome and motivational! Subscribed cause I want to see more and get better!
Thank you so much for your honesty in this video! I feel like this advice also goes for any art videos. I want to be versatile in art and so I'm always watching videos on different art mediums and crafts. I would get caught up in the "I have to have the nice expensive tools like them to make my art better" thinking but I realize it doesn't matter if I don't practice. Something about artist making art with less expensive tools is so much more thrilling and cool! I love that you use both Crayola and Tombo markers :)
Oh I hear you! I tried lettering as a lefty for a few days because I had so many people asking about it! You guys definitely have an additional challenge but I've heard that the biggest/simplest thing is to just go reallllly slow. Good luck!
I’m a calligraphyst and lettering has been so easy for me, I’m right handed✍🏼but the really difficult time, came when I had to do calligraphy in an Intuous pad with the Intuous Pro Pen😩 it taked a lot of time and practice to make a progress 🖥⌨️🙆🏻♀️
Thank you so much! I almost never even posted this video because it was a blog post for a while and it was so wordy that I never really knew how to share on here! I'm so glad it was helpful for you! And thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing these tips! Question: The HP Premium Choice Laserjet paper is not available in my country (The Netherlands). Do you know if there is some other paper that can be compared with the HP paper?
Yes, I would just look for anything that is labeled as a marker paper at your arts store OR if you have some kind of print/copy center, you could go there and ask for whatever their smoothest paper is. The goal is just smooth paper, but doesn't necessarily have to be this one! This one is just what's easily available to me where I live :) Hope that helps!

Thanks for your reaction Alyssa and HowtoHandLetter. I am gonna ask for smooth paper by a copy store because marker paper is pretty expensive and Rhodia paper is not available here or also expensive.
How to Hand Letter can you tell me what packager these colors are in? For example “brights” or “naturals”. Thanks so much! You produce such beautiful videos!!
Brilliant. I have been a calligrapher for years, 30+, but using broad-edge steel pens. I have also had a go at using steel pointed-tip pens to do copperplate or spencerian, but never used these lovely brush-pens for that style, even though I had a few! All of the things you said applies to broad-edge calligraphy (and to learning anything). Good to meet a fellow 'labourer' on the road to mastery ! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and kind comment! That is amazing that you've been doing calligraphy for so long! I bet you have done some amazing pieces of art! Thank you so much for watching!
Well sorry I happened to think it was a bit funny Because a lot of people will say that practice makes perfect to boost peoples spirits and make them practice more She said progress which is true but that’s not usually what people would say 😐
Curl Gurl Yes! And it’s all fine, just was for you to know the reason😊 Practice makes perfect is a super famous quote, but iS a little difficult to write perfect letters, don’t you think so?☺️
I am 12 and I started doing brush pen lettering a while ago and I started off with tombow dual brush pens because in the beginning they really help to get thick and thin strokes once your hand is set ot the grip! I guess everyone has different views about products. #love u and ur videos😘
thank you for your wonderful tips and how you spread positivity, i almost fell down after times and times trying to improve my strokes but now i know practising is the key ❤️ lots of love
Your kind manner, clear explanations and positive attitude really made this a great video. You have a lovely handwriting, and I thank you so much for sharing these tips! I have subscribed!
Hi, I am a beginner to hand lettering and I did not know which video to refer....my friend recommended this channel n it is soo good subed u....n yes u made me realise not to copy other hand letters
Oops it sent too soon. Thanks so much for taking the time out to help us. I kept backing up the video to hear the name of your website. Finally got it and then you mentioned it again at the end. I can’t wait yo share this video. Thanks again for spending the day to help a beginner.
Great video ! Thanks for all your tips. I can't be more agree with you about "Comparison" ! I do art for years and just started calligraphy and for both comparison is the worst thing to do. It's different from inspiring when you run out of idea but comparing your work with others kill the joy as you said and burn all motivation to improve yourself. Gotta watch your other videos ❤❤❤
This Video was very helpful for me. I think you chose a good way to tell us that every lettering pro had been a noob like me and many others. First I only wrote fake calligraphy because I hadn't had any type of brush pens, but a few weeks ago I get some pens. I'm not very good at all, because the thin up strokes were send form hell, but this video helps me to keep being motivated. Ty 💫
I am so thankful I stumbled upon your video. This is wonderful and I can't wait to check out your Instagram and blog. I have been doing calligraphy with dip pens, nib pens and chisel markers for over twenty years. I was recently gifted to sets of brush pens and I can't for the life of me figure them out. There's an old dog, new tricks joke here somewhere. But I finally feel hopeful that I can learn to use these brush pens and maybe become as comfortable as I am with my 'old fashioned nibs.' Thank you so much?
I was taught when doing cursive that you shouldn't lift your pen between letters so I never thought I was doing that wrong until now. Thanks so much for your help!

Thank you for commenting!
Omg I thought you were supposed to write a word in one
same :v
Learn new thing everyday
Jocelyne Espinoza i think its because that’s called cursive, its a common misconception that cursive=lettering but it ain’t
I bought a Bristol board pad. It works great for lettering.
Seeing you write everything like that is so satisfying
What pens are you using at the very beginning I love the blue and green.
I think these are sold separately.
Thank you!!
The very first pen (green one) is the Marvy Uchida Colorin brush markers - I LOVE them! They're linked below and I first found them at Michaels!
I love that saying..."Comparison is the thief of joy" great video!
Yes! Such a true statement! Thank you so much & thanks for watching!
can you use tombow dual bruhes more?
Thank you so much for your honesty in this video! I feel like this advice also goes for any art videos. I want to be versatile in art and so I'm always watching videos on different art mediums and crafts. I would get caught up in the "I have to have the nice expensive tools like them to make my art better" thinking but I realize it doesn't matter if I don't practice. Something about artist making art with less expensive tools is so much more thrilling and cool! I love that you use both Crayola and Tombo markers :)
People always compliment my penmanship, but being a lefty makes lettering so difficult :( I just bought some pens, but it’s tough to push vs pull!
Oh I hear you! I tried lettering as a lefty for a few days because I had so many people asking about it! You guys definitely have an additional challenge but I've heard that the biggest/simplest thing is to just go reallllly slow. Good luck!
I know right! I’m also a lefty and I’ve been practicing for about 3 months but I still get some difficulties :(
@@yssuhh I'm a lefty but if you are innate in cursive or calligraphy, that will be a very big advantages
It's not easy for a right-hander either !!
Hands down, this is the most honest and helpful video on this subject. Thank you for sharing.
Annerike h same here in Hong Kong~ can't find this HP LaserJet paper line in even the largest retailer stationery store…
I use Rhodia paper- I think it works well with the markers because I've been using it for a month and haven't seen any fraying yet :)

Just found you and subscribed! Wow, this is where all the other people are who love pens, lettering and decorating!
At 7:09, what are those 3 pens on the side (blue, green, and pink)?
They are the Marvy uchida colorin makers! Love them!
How to Hand Letter can you tell me what packager these colors are in? For example “brights” or “naturals”. Thanks so much! You produce such beautiful videos!!
You are such a good teacher, encourager and communicator. God bless you even more
I want to follow you on Instagram but there’s so many “How to hand letter”. How can I know?
Her description box has her insta account
It’s funny how she wrote practice makes progress instead of perfect
Curl Gurl its not funny? i mean it makes a lot of sense
aliyah Yes! Because even with practice, maybe some people won’t make lettering perfect, but obiously and for sure, they’ll make a lot of progress💟✍🏼☑️
Well sorry
I happened to think it was a bit funny
Because a lot of people will say that practice makes perfect to boost peoples spirits and make them practice more
She said progress which is true but that’s not usually what people would say
😐
Curl Gurl Yes! And it’s all fine, just was for you to know the reason😊 Practice makes perfect is a super famous quote, but iS a little difficult to write perfect letters, don’t you think so?☺️
GabykzB yeah
It’s all good I’m just really defensive tee hee 😂
I am 12 and I started doing brush pen lettering a while ago and I started off with tombow dual brush pens because in the beginning they really help to get thick and thin strokes once your hand is set ot the grip! I guess everyone has different views about products. #love u and ur videos😘
Yesterday I just started doing calligraphy as a hobby and I practiced a lot and today I definitely improved😁
thank you for your wonderful tips and how you spread positivity, i almost fell down after times and times trying to improve my strokes but now i know practising is the key ❤️ lots of love
Your kind manner, clear explanations and positive attitude really made this a great video. You have a lovely handwriting, and I thank you so much for sharing these tips! I have subscribed!
This video is gold... especially the last one. Comparison kills souls.
These are some of the best advice I’ve seen for beginners 🙌🏼💕
you make this look effortless! your letters are so uniform and absolutely gorgeous. I could watch you brushlettering all day long
Thank you so much! And thanks for watching!
Such good tips! One of my goals for this year was to improve my lettering and experiment, I have improved so far. I hope to improve some more!
This video is so informative. Knowing videos are sped up alone is worth the listen. I really fell for the faster movements.
I was definitely too fast at first as I genuinely didn't know the videos are so much sped up. Thanks for that insight, so helpful!!
Your voice and writing are just so soothing and I could honestly watch your videos all day long
Aw thank you so much! And thanks for watching!
Hi, I am a beginner to hand lettering and I did not know which video to refer....my friend recommended this channel n it is soo good subed u....n yes u made me realise not to copy other hand letters
I just found your channel and subscribed! You are blowing my mind right now! Your hand writing is so beautiful, it’s exactly what I aspire to!
I love this! Thank you for the encouragement. I’ve recently bought brush pens and I can’t stop wanting to do more calligraphy!!
This was really helpful for me. Thank you for sharing your experience and making it so warm and accessible!
Thank you so much for the tips and positive reinforcement! I’m ready to try and conquer letting again now!
Your penmanship is gorgeous!
But I finally feel hopeful that I can learn to use these brush pens and maybe become as comfortable as I am with my 'old fashioned nibs.' Thank you so much?
your lettering is so mesmerising i had to rewind some parts of the video to listen to what you said
I found your 5 handlettering mistakes video very helpful and look forward to following you on RUclips.
Watched the video without sound and I learned a great deal. Great Inspirational quote at the end about comparison stealing our joy.
Your kind heart really shines through in this video. Thank you for sharing!
I found your video extremely helpful and loved seeing you write in real time! Thank you!!! -side note - I LOVE your writing
Thank you for your positivity!! Beautiful work☺️
