- The STORY OF LOVERS ROCK is a feature length documentary tells the story of an era and a music that defined a generation in the late 70s and 80s. Lovers Rock is romantic reggae that was uniquely British. It developed from a small UK scene to become a global brand through the likes of UB40 and Maxi Priest
Lovers Rock was particularly influential to a new generation of black British young women and men who identified with this music that reflected their experiences. Female artists like Louisa Marks, Janet Kay, Brown Sugar, Carroll Thompson led a 'girl power explosion in it's early phase.
The music provided a coping mechanism against a backdrop of racial tension and riots across the UK as well as being a counterpoint to the male dominated 'roots' scene.
The film combines live performances with some of the Kings and Queens of Lovers Rock with comedy sketches, interviews and archive material.
Interviews include Denis Bovell, UB40, Levi Roots Linton Kwesi Johnson, Angie La Ma, Maxi Priest, Mykaell Riley, The comedy sketches are provided by the likes of Eddie Nestor, Robbie G, Wayne Rollins, Glenda Jaxson. Rudi Lickwood, John Simmit., Annette Fagon.
Good to see that a movie has been made about this British music genre that made a serious impact on the lives of many reggae partygoers back in the 70s and 80s.
Let me tell you my story in growing up in the 70's listening to Lovers rock. It all started when I met a west Indian girl from school, we became best friends till I was 19 then lost touch. I had grew up with her and her family. We both went to the blues and she introduce to me lovers rock music. Since then I was hooked on it. Thank you Jean for the memories of our teens.
laughing out loud in the office at this, my whole body goose bumps, smiling like i don't know what . ooooh the memories ...
Just watched the full documentary twice. Bought back memories of my father the late Lord Koos who produced hits such as Too Late To Turn Back - Alton Ellis, I Admire You -Larry Marshall. Nice start to a peaceful Sunday morning.

An excellent Docu-drama.
MUST SEE!
Extraordinary documentary (EXTRA - ORDINARY) sound system special!
...A quality which is defined by your own standard. "There are plenty of artists today who are continuing the spirit of reggae with great music..." I believe I said this too, earlier. I'm not confused. Your perception ignoring my reassurance that its not condescending. You are correct in stating that about tone. I stand corrected.
LOVE REGGAE !!!!! LOVERS ROCK!!!!!!!

When Black men used to love us....too bad I wasnt born yet! lol nevermine. cant wait to see it
@mbproject21 When I saw this film I was in shock! some footage from our Loves Rock Gala Awards DVD was in it with our name rubbed out . Some of the concert footage was also in it and interviews. The footage was on the tapes that belonged to Castro Brown and were used without permission, Tapes which he was still waiting on. If Shabazz had worked with Castro Brown or Lloydie Coxsone this could have been the full lovers rock story.
@RootsDaughter41926

Anybody know the name of the Peter Hunnigale song that was played for 10 seconds?

Just because you don't see reggae artists plastered on MTV doesnt mean that it isn't popular. Trust me reggae was and still is a dominant genre. My god I DONT KNOW, that's just what her music sounds like in my opinion. Yes, she is entitled to sing to her heart's content, but that does not mean that I have to like it, or hold back my opinion for fear of reprisal...
Can you someone tell me the name of the tune at 2:11 - bad tune!!!!
When is this due to be released?
Mi amor Maxi Priest
grew up on LOVERS ROCK (:
Yes,when man & women whine with one another in the middle of the dance floor or against the wall.Dem time deh sweet.
I love it can't wait
what is the song at the start called?
Have you seen the film?
When black men used to love Black women.... those were the days. Why was i born in this era??
Looks like a great documentary, will it be available in Germany?
Well it sounding like you were. You're going on about this great bond and integration between different people, what am I meant to infer from that? Accept it? Bastardise means to lower in quality, and that is exactly what she is doing. There are plenty of artists today who are continuing the spirit of reggae with great music, so don't get confused. Irreverant? I am simply responding to your comments. And any tone can be derived from text, it' all down to the readers perception...
@menelikshabazz This looks amazing! I have recently watched and reviewed Steve McQueen's Lovers Rock film and would love to watch your documentary in full. Is there also a link for the full version or is it available now on streaming platforms? Thanks

No. I'm having fun, I'm bored. I'm waiting to go to work. And I really want fall semester to start again, haha. And I though MTV stopped playing music.
I think some of you are missing the point... THIS PARTICULAR movie also about showing how the music affected other people who may not have been directly associated with the movement!
Yes! i would have loved to have seen artists like Alton Ellis, Vivian Jones, Winston Reedy The Investigators ... I could go on and on I just keep on trying and I'll smile when I feel like crying.. ;o)
Oops sorry got carried away .. anyway... sure it's not definitive but I liked it!
Nothing knew always been culture vultures in all genre of black music. Who cares about white folks and their love for black music, this was about BLACK CULTURE that was created by BLACK people in the UK. Keep it ALL BLACK for once!
Also for the readers amongst you, check out this article I wrote about my experiences (North-west London stylee) in the whole scene: medium.com/@IAmMontag/memories-of-the-dark-black-ecaa8d502eab

#KiwaunAmen
really nice.unfortunately it's like the least of the genre....lots of hardcore reggae fans i know don't really like and patronise it... and i don't know what the future of it will be as i don't see new talents artists coming up and new stuff coming up these days....
@podzillart looooooooooool tru tlks
@empress801 Thanks
@browningbbw I was thinking the exact same lol
Some footage has been stolen without consent and used in this film. THE STORY OF LOVERS ROCK was and is CASTRO BROWNS idea. Castro paid him over £5.000 to film his show and Shabaz ran off with the footage. It took over a year to track him down to get it back. He's still got all our interview tapes and copied some of our concert tapes. He has not mentioned a lot of artists because he don't know of them simple.He has never put on a show never produced a record and never been in a dance yet KMRT
yo yo

...her music lacks any real feeling. She will NOT be remembered. And tbh, I completely forgot about her until you brought it up.
@yObOiWaMo408 Mad About The Boy
Love this time,. Being a white girl enjoying the music and all the parties not always being welcomed I will leave it there.
How did we get from this to bashment
"I just know good music when I hear it." Is quite an elitist or egocentric statement. Wouldn't you say so? You seem like you might be somewhat intelligent. Figure it out. I never once claimed that she was good but at least she attempts to bring some form of reggae music to the masses of those willing to hear. Her presence in the scene also continues to integrate and forward a musical bond regardless of race. My reply was "an attempt to civilize." As the character Will Macavoy might say haha.
Well, I am a fan of more than one genre of music and you only assume that I am subject to one taste. I never said she was good and there are many more artists who do deserve better credit. I'm a musician has been playing for more than ten years. I've heard a lot. And if you were not an imbecile as well you would research into my profile and see my videos and likes as I have done for you. You might realize that we have similar taste - with the exception of that new dancehall and rap.
If you find it insulting while I'm telling you that its not my intention then you shouldn't hold your opinion in such high regard. Take that as you must. Reggae is only popular underground. I'd like it to become a little more popular. Did she do that? How do you know? I thought she said she was raised around the music. I understand that you think her music is a faux, over processed cliche. I understand why you say so, because I play music; I agree. But it is still worthy of entitlement.
Erm ok, I never assumed anything about you, nor do I care to browse your profile to find out your interests. You called me elitist, because I stated that I disliked the artist Ava Leigh, but now you're telling me that you do not think she is good either. So what the hell are we talking about here because Im confused?...
I never forcefully said "be patient." I'm not some megalomaniac god. :) Haha, Why the emphasis on YOU? Don't my other statements answer your question already?
Dude, seriously....Do you love the look of your own text, or what!?
