Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon ring in the holidays with their 4th teaming in MGM’s MRS. PARKINGTON (’44). Based on the novel by Louis Bromfield, it’s the story of the beginning of a legendary dynasty and features wonderful costarring roles for Agnes Moorehead as a French advisor (Oscar nomination), Edward Arnold, Lee Patrick, marvelous Gladys Cooper, Frances Rafferty and Tom Drake. Big, lavish and so romantic, filled with warmth and humor, it’s perfect for curling up in front of the fire. Happy Holidays from all of us!

Merry Christmas!
Steve, you are a joy to listen to!!❤❤❤❤❤💋💋
Thanks a million!
I attended a tribute to Greer Garson at the SMU film school, and was fortunate to sit next to Sidney Guilaroff at dinner. Greer was there, as well as some of her co-stars, like Cesar Romero and Fred MacMurray, who brought his wife, June Haver. A few years after that, I dated Gayle Fogelson, Greer's stepson. He didn't have a very high opinion of her as a stepmother. Apparently, the Fogelson kids called her "Dear Greer" (as in Mommie Dearest). Loved her movies - thanks, Steve, and Merry Christmas.
Well, long ago I gave up the notion that the stars were anything like their screen images. I love the movies though! Happy Holiday! Steve
I'll have to add this to my list. Agnes Moorehead looks so strikingly gorgeous!
She is and that accent you won';t believe. Aamazing performance! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQMy stars and sattellites, as Endora would say, that sexy French Accent she used.. WOW!! she sounded like another famous Redhead, Isabelle Huppert, who was born and raised in Paris. So to Ms. Moorehead, that's a compliment on the accent.💜⚘️
Greer Garson and Buddy Fogelson had a ranch in New Mexico which included land that was the site of the westernmost battle of the Civil War, the Glorieta Pass. Greer Garson left the ranch and house to be included in Pecos National Historical Park.
When I visited some years back at the Visitors’ Center there was an introductory film narrated by Greer Garson.
Greer Garson did host at least once Saturday Night Live.
Well, then good for Greer. Se left alot of money to the acting department at the state university too.
AGNES MOREHEAD AS THE FRENCH FORMER MISTRESS! ...oh man, you know, sight unseen, that that's gonna be fantastic....
And Charles Laughton as a charming Prince of Wales? Man, I need to stream this tonight!
Merry Christmas, Steve. Thanks for the gift🎄
Well, you're right about the first part. It's not Charles Laughton, though I ,love him, it's Cecil Kellaway, who is pixish and charming! Have a ball this holiday! Steve
❄🌹❄Agnes Moorehead was such a classy and powerful woman, I think I'll check this movie out just to see her performance.
❄ I love your cardinal display...have a HAPPY WINTER SOLSTICE STEVE !!!
You too! I think you'll be wild about Aggie in this one! Steve
Have to finally check this one out due to your great overview. Totally agree Agnes Moorehead should have had an Oscar for "Magnificent Ambersons," but it was Teresa Wright who beat her in the Supporting category (Moorehead's work was so great the NYFC gave her Best Actress, as they didn't have the Supporting category in play back then).
I know. She should have been up for Best Actress. They seldome did that in those days. She wasn't known enough, and was typecast as a character actress.so they slid her into the Supporting catagory. End of story. Happy Holidays and thanks for watching! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Never thought about her as lead in "Ambersons" (I guess because of the ensemble nature of the film) but she was amazing, and I would've loved to have seen a double nomination for her in both categories, ala Barry Fitzgerald in "Going My Way." Happy Holidays!
@@slc2466 That double nomination for Fitzgerald was a travesty! I've never been a fan of that film or that performance and think Cliftoin Webb should have won hands down for "Laura". As for Aggie in "Ambersons", she couldn't have competed with the steam roller that was "Mrs. Miniver" and Hollywood didn't like Orson Welles, so she had to carry that along with her. The fact she was nominated would have to do. Thank heavens the NY Film Critics got it right. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I think the NYFC win helped her at least get a nomination, as "Ambersons" wasn't much of a success, even with a Best Picture nom as well, and back then of course there weren't as many pre-Oscar awards to consider before the nominations. Would've loved to have seen Webb win for either "Laura," (way up there on my list of favorite movies) or "The Razor's Edge," wherein I think he was (at least) equally terrific.
@@slc2466 I totally agree.
Wonderful movie...flawless cast and Agnes Moorehead as a glamorous temptress was a fantastic surprise.
I know! She could really do anything! Enjoy! Steve
This movie is a gem and big classic...... I love always the team Walter Greer...... No movies like this one today unfortunately...... Star and studio system was unique and unforgettable, magical
It's very magical indeed and just right for the time of year. Disfunctional families at Christmas and a great love story besides! Happy Holidays! Steve
You've sold me on this movie, I loved the Mrs Miniver films and of course Agnes Moorehead who was a great actress. Thank you Steve
I read her stiff upper lip, noble and strong woman roles in the early 40s were needed and much beloved during the war years. We needed this kind of woman to keep everyone focused on the war efforts. Then starting in 1945, when the war was over a dark and cynical mood was pervasive in the US and then film noir took over. Greer just did not fit into that type of movie genre. There were just some leading ladies whose star status rose but was defined by a certain era and their time was over. Plus, she was beautiful in real life with her striking red hair and that beautiful and perfect diction. Thanks again for another awesome video and you are indeed a gift that keeps on giving, cheers!
I agree with you, I also think it had to do with the changing tatste in the audiences once the boys came home. When Greer was in her heyday, the main audiences were the women on the homefront and she represented all the strength and faith they had to muster. to keep the country and homefires burning. Then, the men came home, began making the choices of what to see and her audience gradually declined. appy Holidays and thanks for watching! best Wishes; Steve
She should have made some Film Noirs. (Can you imagine?)
We really are tuned to the same wave length, definitely one of my favorites! Major drama and you can never go wrong with Agnes Moorehead. Merry Christmas guys!
I love this one too and agree, Aggie is the best! Happy Holidays! Steve
Never heard of this one. Thanks Steve. Always loved Aggie. She breaks your heart in "Ambersons". She looks amazing in this. Can't wait to see it. Merry Christmas to you and Johnny.
She will knock you out in this! Enjoy! Steve
Happy Holidays, Steve and Johnny!!🎄
You too!
Fantastic! Loved this review. I really enjoy the background and side information you give, along with the movie review. I never get tired of you Steve! Happy Holidays!
TRhank you for the lovely compliment! SO appreciated! Have a wonderful holiday season! Thanks for watching! Steve
This looks like a great movie to nibble popcorn through, in snug winter jammies. Agnes Moorehead had a career BEFORE Endora! Thank you for highlighting her endearing performance, even the wild chick in *Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte* . Merry Christmas, all!
She was incredibly versatile. Nominated for four Oscars.
Thank-you, Steve. Over the years you introduced me to movies I might have missed, even though I'm a huge classic movie fan. I'll definitely be on the look out for "Mrs. Parkington"; Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon were always one of my favorite duos. The happiest of holidays to you, and by the way, you are as handsome as ever!
OMG!Thank you for the compliments! I'll give you an hour to cut that out . I hope you have lovely holidays and many thanks for having watching TOQ! My Very Best Wishes Always: Steve
Oh thank you so much for this Christmas present! This is one of my favourite movies ever and you certainly did it proud! This time of year, I always love hearing Greer Garson's beautiful voice narrating The Little Drummer Boy. Merry Christmas to Steve, Johnny, and the whole Team TOQ and thank you for another year of fabulous videos!!

And to you and many thanks for watching and for the lovely comments! Steve
You did it again -- another movie I'd never heard of! Thanks, Steve and Merry Christmas from Hawaii.
Ha! Mission accomplished! Happy Holidays in Hawaii! Best; Steve
I Love this film! Agnes Moorehead's Oscar Nominated Performance is Brilliant, on top of Greer Garson's Oscar Nominated Gift of a Performance. Without a doubt, Gladys Cooper is unbelievably underrated!
I agree. It's loaded with the very best of the MGM stock company in a lavish production! What could be better? Steve
A PERFECT movie for staying in and bundling up during this freeze! You did it again, Steve - thank you! And all the best of this holiday season to you and yours.
You too! It os the perfect winter movie. Get cozy and enjoyt! Happy Holidays! Steve
I have not seen this movie.
after this story of yours now I have a great desire to see it.,... I will do everything to find it.
thank you so much Steve ❤️
You won't regret it! It's fabulous! Steve
I’m a huge fan of Edward Arnold. He was never bad in anything he did even on radio. Played great villains. Thanks for a another wonderful video & Happy Holidays!
I agree. Arnold was so versatile and when , on the rare occasion, he got a lead role, he ran with it1 Happy Holidays! Steve
So glad you squeezed in a review before Xmas. Mrs Parkington looks right up my street, love Greer G/Walter P pairing & can’t wait to see Agnes M go to town on this part. I grew up w Bewitched & Endora was a favourite, she holds your attention in every scene. Thanks as always for bringing us such a diverse collection of films, your reviews really do set the tone & add to the enjoyment. Merry Xmas to you, Johnny & the team. Xxxx
I delighted you enjioy them and thank you for watching and for the lovely compliments! Happy Holidays! Best; Steve, Johnny & TOQ Gang
Merry Christmas, Steve. You have such a talent for making these classic movies come alive. I haven't seen Mrs. Parkington yet, but I'll bet it isn't as half as entertaining as your review. You keep this up, and I have no doubt others will see what I see; Steve Hayes, you are a national treasure. And Happy New Year and hugs to everyone at Tired Old Queen at the Movies!

And don’t forget Peter Lawford Thank so much for this amazing review and all of the others this year Steve . I think the sign of one who makes great reviews is someone who makes me want to watch a movie I have never seen before . Thank you, thank you for this spot-on review of an epic film! Mrs. Parkington could get the miniseries treatment today it has so many intriguing stories packed into one gorgeous film. Greer Garson so commanded the screen in every one of her roles, ditto the wonderful Agnes Moorehead. The happiest of holidays to you and Johnny and your families! Looking forward to more great reviews in 2023♥️

Well, the holiday wait is over, Steve, dear. What a lovely good film for the holidays and what a lovely presentation. I do detect holiday warmth coming from you. the film does have high production values as you have high presentation values. Thank you. Happy Holidays.
Oh My Gosh! You make me blush a bit! Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing from you in the New Year! Happy Holidays! Steve
I think I might have seen some of Greer Garson's films on TV like on the ol Turner Classic Movie channel. She was stunningly beautiful. So will have to see if I can locate and watch this one. Wow, what a storyline! Btw, the production values just hits the roof.
Right?!? MGM at it's best!
Good actress, but sheesh, she was always so haughty! And I can’t look at Pidgeon now w/o thinking of what he was doing to Scotty Bowers (or at least what Bowers claimed he was doing) . . . 😀😀😀
Oh please, who doesn't like a- head? Happy Holidays! Steve
I wish Scotty Bowers hadn't written that book😥

A GREAT REVIEW AS ALWAYS, STEVE!! My favorite part in MRS. PARKINGTON is when Greer Garson discovers her husband has made it his mission to destroy every rich family in NYC who snubbed him one night at a dinner he hosted. (It might be kinda cool to have that superpower sometimes, if you know what I mean...) I thought for sure you'd do another terrific picture for Christmas this year starring (one of your favorites) Miss Bette Davis, Monty Woolley and Miss Ann Sheridan (who in my opinion comes close to stealing the picture): 1942's THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER. I would love to see you review that motion picture!! Merry Holidays From One of Your Biggest Fans in Chicago!! xxx ooo
I try and find ones that aren't as familiar , but still have the setting or the holiday spirit. Tha Man Who Came To Dinner is on my list! Happy Holidays and Best Wishes to m y friends in Chicago! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ YOU'RE THE BEST, STEVE!! I just finished reading the original New York Times review by Bosley Crowther of THE MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER and he said that "One palm should be handed Bette Davis for accepting the secondary role of the secretary, and another palm should be handed her for playing it so moderately and well." Can't wait for your Monty Wooley and Billie Burke impersonations!! Happy and Safe Holidays, Steve!!! xxx ooo
@@wanderingtreeestate You too! have a wonderful time! Best; Steve
Another one I need to watch. ESPECIALLY because of Agnes Moorehead, one of my all-time favorites. And she’s allowed to look beautiful for once.
She's amazing in this. She was one of the most vesatile actresses of her time. Orson Welles claimed she could do anything.
Merry Christmas, Steve and Johnny! I spend a good bit of the holidays watching your videos so thank you for being part of my tradition. You bring so much joy! I have been looking for an old movie that maybe you can help me track down. It's about an actress from a small coal town in PA who dies in Hollywood and wanted to be buried back home. It's supposed to be somewhat based on a true story. Any ideas? Have a wonderful holiday!

I was not familiar with this film. Thanks again for a great review! I found it online last night and watched it. Wonderful!! Ironic that Greer talks about the gaslight she'd never seen before. That year she lost the Oscar to Ingrid Bergman for "Gaslight". Greer and Pidgeon were second only to the screen team of Powell and Loy in number of pairings. Another great Christmas Eve movie is 1947's "Christmas Eve" -- lots of parallels to "Mrs. Tarkington" -- wealthy old lady with family of ne're do wells. MERRY CHRISTMAS Steve and Johnny!!

Happy Birthday, Tracy! How nice to hear from you and many happy returns. Steve
It's so nice to see you, Steve! I had not heard of this movie but I really want to see it now. Wow! Thank you for saving all this culture, I mean, how many people alive today are aware of this movie? Would you ever do maybe a more modern movie? I think that might be very interesting! Cate Blanchett, maybe? Of course she played Hepburn (though I admit I have not seen The Aviator. I should do that. But I have seen many of her scenes and she is tremendous, as always.)
Cate is tremendous, especially in "The Aviator," but there are enough people commenting and keeping up with her career. I like to keep the memories alive of the great classic actors, who gave so much and left us such a bounty of amazing work. By the way, I have done more modern films; " Far From Heaven", " Brick", "Maurice" "My Beautiful Launderette" etc. Check with my RUclips site and you'll see the past episodes! Happy Holidays! Steve

After Greer Garson's notorious Oscar speech for "Mrs. Miniver", which lasted ten minutes or twenty minutes or one hour (!!), depending on who's telling the story (one story says that they had to bring out a chair so the presenter could sit down) the academy wasn't going to run the risk of a second Oscar for Greer.
Even so, I just may spend my Christmas Eve with Mrs. Parkington.

Steve, I love your appreciation of these movies, and the background. I've seen most of them, but you always add something. Love your place, and the cardinals. Have you seen the TV version of The Little Foxes Greer did (on RUclips)?
No I haven't. It would be nice to see her play someone nasty. Thanks for watching! Happy Holidays! Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Same to you!
Dear Mr. Hayes: I have loved your channel for a long time and rented a lot of the films you recommend. I especially loved the VIP's, the Lion in Winter, and Sudden Fear. Would you consider reviewing "Feud" on FX? I am sure you have heard of it. It's a limited series about the feud between Bette Davis and Your Girl Joan Crawford. I would love to hear your opinion. God bless you and keep up the great work! Tell John I love him too :)
'll tell him! . However, sorry to disappoint you, but I only do classic films. I feel that If I stray off the beaten path, I'll lose some credibility. I'm glad "Feud" got made, although I had a few problems with it. However if it leads people back to the originals that's terrific. Thanks so much for watching! Happy New Year!
Merry Christmas to one and all from England.
I just got back from twoo weeks in London! You really do Christmas right! Magical! Best Wishes and thanks for watching! Steve

Hey guys: have a great holiday!
You too! Steve
Where can I watch this full length movie??....I have searched everywhere. Please help someone???
If oitUbe or TCM aren't screening it, the best thing I can recommend is check out Ebay or Amazon and pick up a previously viewed DVD of it. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I don't have a DVD player anymore and my Television doesn't have the slot on the side of one to put one in. I've checked Amazon and nothing. I live in Australia and our cable network once had the TCM channel on it until they removed it after 10 years with no explanation. I have taped it then and it stayed in my library but when I had to reboot the cable box due to a storm a couple of days ago, it simply wiped out my movie. I even tried buying it through You tube and it wouldn't accept my credit card details when I was going through the motions. I'm am livid. Any other suggestions 🤞🤞🙏🙏
@@georginaagathos8391 MOVE!...sorry. Whadda' a delimma. So sorry you're going through this.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Move??...I'd rather stay in my country where I'm safe and not have to worry about getting shot. Thanks but I'm good here. 👍
