I'm the photographer behind the photo at 38:50 :D Yes, the entire thing is a mic stand, everything is connected. Was taken with a 85mm F1.8 at close range. I have never shot this band, and I never knew what was going to happen. I was simply at the right place at the right time.
I also shot the image at 1:04:18! The stage was almost at the same level as the concert goers area, was probably 0,5m difference in height. Was also taken with the 85mm F1.8. I was new when this was taken, and I agree with the crop. The thought behind this at the time was the light behind him that I thought was cool.
Dude! I LOVE the shot at 38:50! I can understand their dissatisfaction with the bones on the left side but I think those bones actually add to the image. Good job on that!
Yo those are both great shots, and I personally love the breathing room the subject has on the later image. What bands are those?

Hey I took the first one featured, I'm a promoter/rep for gigs and picked up a camera just over a year ago so I like to dip my toe into taking some snaps from on stage/side stage which is a place photographers usually can't get to (who's gonna tell the promoter to get off stage ha) - this photo is from a queen tribute at the Newcastle O2
It was a ballad aye, the only thing the singer asked for was the house lights off which made everyone get their phone lights out

Awesome shot! So all the lighting is totally natural? Some people were thinking the cell lights were photoshopped but it looks great to me! -P
@@FStoppers I don't know how to photoshop so it's all natural aye 😂 Just the grading itself I messed around with until it landed like it looks now - the website & RUclips has been great for learning btw, props to everyone involved with it I bloody love it
Awesome shot man! I really like the perspective, it puts you in shoes of a musician and gives you a feeling of stage. They say in critique that it should be about the musician and not the crowd but the fact that you have this unique perspective of really cool moment is what sets this photo apart from all the others. Great work!

the photo of the stage with the fireworks has been composited. if you look at the explosions and the smoke you can tell that multiple have been copied
Agree - most of the fireworks are mirror-imaged horizontally. As a composite, it's ok though - just not a true pic of a concert.
Plus the horizon wasnt dead on and that usually one of the first things mentioned.
Yeah that's so obviously mirrored, with a couple of clones just to try to hide that... In this day and age where people's attention span is about 2 seconds that's great, but they should have been transparent about it upon submission (and remove the watermark)
34:12 that is Zach Blair from Rise Against, they are quite the active bunch, I love that shot!
I can't believe neither one of them noticed a lot of the fireworks in the image at 54:53 are perfect mirror images on each side of the frame. That NEVER happens with real fireworks. It leaves me wondering if almost all of the fireworks were photoshopped in?
It leaves me wondering whether either of the guys doing the critique know what a true good/great music photo looks like. They are giving 3s and 4s to stuff that I would delete.

Last photo is from a Nothing More show. The stage is set up like a jungle gym for the lead singer to climb & jump off.

Jeff Beck is sensational, a real musician's musician! I've seen him a few times, including at the Royal Albert Hall in London which was incredible. Keep on rocking guys!

@@FStoppers It's not been touched on before on here and think it's an progressive subject which more Landscape Photographers are doing. In my opinion, real estate has already been done on this channel and is a little boring, this is subjective, but that's just my thoughts on the matter.
I am agreement with both of you, I found myself Rating each photo also. There were some that I really liked, some of the others looked rather "fake" IMHO. I personally would have done a bit more post-processing on some of them. This was a great video to see because i want to do some concert photography to see if it is something i might me interested in venturing into. I love listening and watching the "Pro" photographers and i find myself taking mental notes to try and make some of my photos better. So, we'll see how they turn out as soon as i am able to a local venue.
I'd be super interested in seeing what constitutes solid 4s and 5s. I'm not arguing with the scoring. Just wondering what DOES make a world class concert photo. And.. I always make sure I get plenty of the drummer... and keyboards.. bass.. sometimes, I even get the sound guy. ;-)

Also, what do you (fstoppers and the community) think about the new highly restrictive photo contracts that some artists are implementing? (Ariana Grande is the main one to come to mind)

The last photo of Johnny from Nothing More was from the tour with Ghost I think...you should have seen the rig he was one before that shot. They put on an excellent show!

#14 is Charli XCX and it's such a freaking awesome photo of her!! I'd love to tell the photographer who shot it. She totally WOULD use this photo - either because she also likes it or for satire. I agree with the standard critique about if it's going in the portfolio or not and crop on the arm, but she brings so much energy that I really think the shot captures that with the hair flip and makes me so excited to see her live again in a couple of months.
Disappointed that mine didn't make the cut, oh well. Love the CTC's!
For the highest rated image, I feel like the cell phone "flashes" were either added or replaced in post. They all look identical and the color temperature doesn't vary much. Also, the light would only come on to take the shot or for video, are there really that many people shooting at the exact same time? The dazzle and flare of the flashes seems a little pumped up, almost too much. I think if a slight be more of the artist were visible and the flashes weren't so distracting, it would be better.
I thought is was the constant lights phones have now. It would not be hard for the front guy to ask everyone to turn on their phone lights and wave them . It might be faked but I didn't get that impression initially.
@@batsonelectronics Let me clarify: I think the flashes were in the image, and I believe the glow they cast on the crowd, but I think that every flash was replaced by a fake sun-star. All of the flashes seem to have equal intensity, color, shape, etc.
@@eformance I closed the video so not going to relook. You may be right. That wasn't my impression when I saw it but I didn't look super close so I can't stand behind my belief 100% as I didn't look very close. What you think is absolutely possible.
Totally natural because I don't know how to do any of that stuff 😂 noted the distracting factor though I see that (I took the image hence replying)

boy you guys are tough but correct. i agree with all of your crop suggestions. it make me feel good that you said you shot 1000 images at a concert and deleted 99% which i do. this video is very good

The very last pic was a band called nothing more . The pic wasnt actually of the drummer but of the singer who does some percussion stuff
those some good shots - some are pretty aight.
1:07:50 Band is Nothing More. They're great and do a bunch of cool shit on stage with improvised instruments. Subject is the lead singer.

Thanks for these vids really enjoy them but it’s backwards. The best image should be held until the end and the crappiest image should win a tutorial!
Then some people start to shoot bad photos on purpose just to win without any effort to be good.
(first photo) The neg space over his head! I agree! It would have been a "better" composition if this was an outside photo with a clear, starry sky. I love the isolation of photo #4.
Those speakers in the photo at 17:30 are side fills...Same concept as the floor monitors
Isn't the image at 47:20 a composition? There's something about his face that's off and then there's the pedalboard which is photoshoped in (look at the cables).
I dunno, you think that is a composite? Cable and pedal board look pretty real to me. His boot is over the cable. -P
@@FStoppers the cable looks cut out, the shadow under the board makes me wonder as well as the shadow under his shoe (it has sharp edges and it seems to be square). Like the image anyhow :)

PHOTO 4: B&W pianist- Cropped too close and I think is too soft and/or too much shadow. Then again, the subject and composition are exquisite! And I agree the angle of the shot is unique, adding much more detail than the average pianist photograph. I would have given a definitive 4!
PHOTO 5: TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOUR COMMENTS! This should have been the winner! The X shape creates a new and unique composition for me to try! I LOVE THIS ONE
PHOTO 6: Too much going on...crop closer and light shining on artist only would help a lot. But there is only so much you can do with a shot that wasn't good in the first place
Shot of Steven Tyler is just not good. And I LOVE AEROSMITH! And I would love to have the image in my collection had I captured it myself but it wouldn't go in my portfolio nor would I have submitted it to FStopppers for a critique.
The flamethrower shot....ok....so I think this is a great shot for a heavy metal band. The bones in the foreground add depth, although, after a while, they begin to be a distraction. The chain above his head may be part of something, I am assuming a part of the equipment (maybe the microphone) but I would have removed that in post. Although it may serve a purpose for the show, it serves no purpose for the image. Otherwise, this is an awesome shot given the genre! 4.5 and with some edits, maybe even a 5! And I am not a heavy metal fan necessarily.
#14 - No...just no..not a fan of this photo....you must have had a better image to submit. YOu're clearly talented because your exposure is perfect and the subject is crisp. But it was the wrong photo.
ANd the X photo is freaking AWESOME! the exposure, the contrast, the composition, but why the watermark though? Especially straight through the center??? Quite arguably the winner with the exception
PHOTO # (Yellow and Black) without the watermark, I'd give this one a 3.5. And I would have liked to see a sharper image throughout OR more motion in the subject with a larger aperture for a sharper background. otherwise, the slight camera shake appears to be a mistake. The photograph's subject, the composition, and contrast are AWESOME though! Nice job!
PHOTO # of bloody faced singer....expsoure is too bright I think. Maybe I am stereotyping and jumping to conclusions but I would think this band would want to portray a darker and dramatic image. This lighting is quite the opposite. It is flat and drab.

In my opinion, almost all of these were snapshots - not very impressive. The image at 14:00 is my favorite.
Having shot music for 10 years I was a little surprised by the generosity of scoring also.

Some of the images are good, others are average. You should have asked the Shooting The Rockstars Facebook members to chime in with their images
Real shame the photo of Sleep (M.Nisbet) wasnt featured. Sure it looked more like a portrait but made a nice change from the obvious, as did the white background on F.Morisset's Parkway Drive shot. Also would of been ace to see the Bluecoats rehearsal (R.Weekley) shown too, very different to the same old same old.
BRING BACK LEE MORRIS!!! You guys went WAY too easy on some of these. I need Lee to bring the heat!!

The band photo which was critiqued ending near @6:50: IMO it was a solid photo. However it did not provide a lot of context -- but who cares, its a scoring image upon contact. The impact however IS riding on the pilexarity (?) of large print vs on a phone.
Go ahead and add more color to the photo. It is graphically flat - which is cool - but the color would provide more spacial impact.
tl;dr application is of importance in this images critique

The first photo I would've cloned out the mike cable. Looks a bit weird with where it is. Just pretend he is using a cordless mike

Give them 2 tablets with the same images, or one big screen. Why guest should lean towards small screen for checking, looking unrespected and awkward
It’s not the algorithm that pulls a video … it’s the artists media person … once the algorithm sees the (c) material … it goes to the artists rep… the. Then decide the fate of the video … some artists just take the revenue from the video ..: others revenue share… others freak out and pull video down..but that’s happening less and less these days
"Submit up to two of your best images before July 23" "New submissions are closed" Why ??
Honestly throughout the video I was wandering, do they have the attention span of a nine year old, they constantly make comments about cropping to the singer alone, about removing "unecessary" elements and removing negative space. Do they completely neglect basic concepts and elements of photography such as, sense of depth, sense of spacing, the documentary nature of photography and how chaotic details add up to the time, date and moment of the picture, things like framing and atmosphere. Even the arguement that they are commercial photographers and they don't care about things like a frame as in total or of composition etc. the dudes completely neglect that magazines, promoter sites and even artists WANT you to show the crowd,they WANT you to show the size of the venues, they WANT you to show elements outside of the musicians and throughout the video they are like "Hmmm yes let's remove these completely essential things from the picture to make the most sterile image possible that all we show is a face maybe with a guitar around their neck".

I'm actually surprised that these are the photos that made it to the top 20. There were at least a dozen or two that were way better than the majority of these.
The CTC is never the top 20 images. It's always a mix of images picked by our editors. -P

How many 'different' photos will anyone be able to take? It's a fucking concert photo. It's all been done. We've seen it all. If someone isn't literally blowing himself up, it's probably not going to be new and unique... wtf...
This Concert Photo CTC doesn't seem to be as bad as the previous (though I'm only halfway done with this one). In the last one, there were some AMAZING shots yet Lee kept criticizing about how he would rate those images higher if he actually recognized the musician in the shot, pretty much insinuating that "Hey, if you aren't shooting Beyonce or Taylor Swift or Metallica, even if its an amazing visual, I can't give you the 4 or 5 you deserve because I don't know who it is I'm looking at".
That was a frustrating watch. Lol. This one, to me, is easier to watch.

Not to sound full of myself but I shoot shows all the time and nearly everyone one of these would have been in my rejects bin. I don't shoot events with great lighting but you can still capture emotion and interaction between the crowd and even the musicians themselves. A lot of the best shots come right at the end of a song, the smiles, the high fives, just that kind of interesting emotion.
I would just record the whole thing in 4K @ 24fps ( or UHD @ 30pfs ) and make notes of good times in the video to go back and look for screen grabs. A Panny GH-5s would handle the low light fine and true 4K is 8.8mp for plenty big images. Use the Metabones and Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 lens. Hell use 2, I for a fixed perspective and move around with the other. It is SOOO much easier to get clean shots now vs. film days.
I mean, you could do this but the quality would never be great. As a GH5s shooter, I can guarantee the quality of a Nikon, Canon, or Sony camera with a 2.8 aperture would look WAY better. 1/24th of a second is just too slow of a shutter IMO to get great looking stills from video in a concert setting. It can be done but isn't ideal. -P
@@FStoppers I shoot my G85 at 1/50th sec or 1/60th and at ISO 6400 or better it looks as good or better then many of the images I saw. Maybe the images you showed were much faster ( and above ISO 6400 ) due to lighting and trying to stop motion, then I see the point. My best lens is the Panny 25,, F1.7 and even then I can get 1/150 sec @ F1.7 at ISO 6400 in very low light. Heck, shoot FF @ 4K if they allow ISO above 6400. It just seems that is the best way to catch more action ( and have video and audio ) with today's technology. It seems like everyone is limiting themselves to methods used long ago just because that is what was always done.
