People don't always enjoy flashy and fast paced superhero based gameplay. People also like being strategic and take some time before making a move like in chess. Even though most people, especially due to clip thinking nowadays, would prefer SM2 over BG3 (BG3 genre has way fewer fans), the fact that even people who hate that type of gameplay in games like BG3 admitted that the game deserved GOTY says something.

Not even joking me and most my friends said the same thing about bg3. Then one of friends convinced me to finally try it. I loved it the turn based combat doesn't feel bad like you'd expect.
To me, it seemed almost everyone had decided that BG3 would win GOTY. Don't judge it based on the looks of the combat as it's still really satisfying to duel weild divine smites while forcing them to crit. He's right, comparing the two is not something that can be done since they're different genres completely. BG3 has a ton of different ways the story could go, different builds, hundreds of hours of gameplay, high replay ability, great graphics if you have a good computer, so many choices, you can kill children, different armors and ways to customize your look, and easter eggs. You wanna kill all your party members in a way that you don't get a game over? Go for it, you can do that in act 1 with 5 of them. Wanna stop a hag from tricking a soon to be mother into trading her unborn child for bringing back her husband, then bring her husband back yourself how the hag would have as a zombie undead and convince the wife to love the zombie? You can do that. Wanna talk an enemy into having his army kill each other, then he kill his pet, then himself? You can do that. Don't get me wrong, spiderman 2 is an amazing game and looks spectacular, but I can't finish this sentence without contradicting myself... yeah...

Meanwhile, in BG3, you can kill a child and kill the parents with the child's corpse, or turn the child undead and have them kill their parents. There are so many evil options...

@@WarFoxThunder that’s not innovative either dude. Games been doing branching story paths since the ps1 era even. Original Resident Evil has like 4 endings. The walking Dead and Dishonored both released in 2012, and almost every decision you make greatly alters both the game world around you and the story’s final outcome. Far Cry 4 can end in the opening scene or be a 30 or so hour experience based on how you play.

Both Spider-Man 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 being nominated for several awards and even GOTY is an achievement within itself. Both licensed superhero games and CRPGS are often both looked down upon when it comes to nominations. They may get nominated for a couple sub categories but almost never GOTY. Both of them beging nominated for several awards *and* GOTY is actually an amazing feat. On top of that, one of them beating Alan Wake 2 is just insane. And in the same year that companies that have more financial pull on the industry like Bethesda, Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard, and WB not getting a free pass for sub-par effort while barely anything live service, full of micro transactions, loot boxes, season passes or any other consumer exploititive practices is a massive victory for all of us.
That's what I am saying, non of the other on going games even get close to what epic games does for fortnire, fortnite always on top, even when they're at their lowest point like ch 4 season 3.
@eliasmarquez4257 The AI is NOT better. And less gadgets make it worse because it gives it less variety and makes it even easier. The stealth isn't bad, per se, but it's painfully mediocre. Yes, everything doesn't need to be a challenge, but when it's this ridiculously easy, there's a problem with your gameplay.
Spiderman 2 didnt win because it played far to safely. There was next to no evolution from miles morales, and honestly, its running a risk of becoming stale like assasins creed if it doesnt mix the formula up a little

I've never played BG3, but from what i've heard about it, it sounds like a programming masterpiece. I was surprised it won considering the competition, but it definitely deserves it.
I'm a neutral observer with popcorn here who just loves games, but BG3 is one of the best games I've played in my entire life. It brought me back to the days of being a degenerate high schooler where I'd wake up, play all day for 14 hours, go to bed, dream about playing more, wake up and do it again, for WEEKS on end. It's an absolute masterpiece.
Imagine being so laughable that you rate game solely by gameplay, completely diminishing role of everyone else who worked on story, music and graphics.
At the end of the day, the gameplay really is all that actually matters. That's why God of War didn't beat out Elden Ring last year. Why BG3 won over TotK, is well beyond me. Maybe Geoff Keighley is really into fucking bears, who knows?

For example Pathologic had very difficult and not that fun gameplay for me, but i stayed for the story and that strange world. And there is Dishonored, where story honestly wasn't that good, but gameplay carried the whole game. Either way rating game solely by gameplay is wrong in my opinion. Also there's literally interactive movie games.

Some folks have talked about Larian studios making a Star Wars game, I'd love to see them do a Marvel game; any Marvel RPG with BG3 levels of passion would be magnificent.
Talk to two different people who have beat balders Gate and ask what they did in every situation. You will get wildly different answers. Spider man is basically, I pressed the punch button until I won. Pretty game,entertaining combat, but nothing deserving of game of the year.
Imo I feel like spider man 2’s story was a downgrade compared to Spider-Man Ps4. It’s still a great game. But baldurs gate 3 had my friend and I addicted when it first came out and we despise turn based games excluding persona games. We clocked in at around 500 hours total in the first couple of months.
Not true. I haven't actually played baldurs gate, but Inscryptions, a turned based gane, has much more engaging and fun gameplay than spiderman 2, ESPECIALLY in the first act and in Kaycee's Mod (not an actual mod, it's apart of the base game)

Personally I disagree. Millions of people play chess everyday and it’s a turn based game. Baldurs Gate invites people to actually think tactically about their move and the potential consequences that each move can have. I would argue that thinking your way through a 15 character battle where any move could be your last is a lot more entertaining than button mashing in a lot of action games. It’s all down to personal preference obviously but still
If its not broke, don’t fix it. The only things they could do is improve web swinging more and the gadget system which they did and they gave you symbiote powers. The gameplay does not need reinventing each game. Especially not if it was good enough in the first game

I love turn based RPGs, but I tried Baldur’s Gate 3 and came out incredibly disappointed. I’d had such high expectations set in my head from everything I’d heard about it and it failed to live up to them. I’m not saying Spider-Man 2 should have won, I adored it, but it shouldn’t have won. I don’t think Tears Of The Kingdom should have either. I think it should’ve been Alan Wake 2. It was the devs first time making a survival horror game and they nailed it. I know that Tears Of The Kingdom innovated with the Ultrahand, but going into a completely different genre is more impressive.
Alan Wake 2 is SO MUCH MORE that survival horor. Alan pushed storytelling And visuals narrative into a fucking space. Like theres nothing Like this. Only Hideo And Sam make AAA games Like this nowdays. I personally was disapointed by spiderman 3. Not by its gameplay, but by the story. I think its obvious that I value story (since Im a writer myself) And the story of Spiderman had so much to offer, but fell short for me at the end

Any game that is sorta like DnD being a turn based rpg will always be the best contender overall. I’m not saying that because of opinion (I don’t even like turn based rpg games that much) I’m just saying that because it’s facts
Spiderman 2 was great, but it didnt really bring many new things to the table, hell i'd even argue it removed more than it added. The games combat is essentially identical for the most part except they practically nuked the gadgets from the last game, and removed the old suit abilites. They did improvr on the traversal mechanics, and the size of the world, but they removed some of the more entertaining open world activities the last game had. Mean while BG3 is likely the most innovative rpgs since skyrim, some might not be a fan of the combat which is fine, but there are plenty who prefer stratigic combat over button mashing.
Sadly the game doesn’t have an online mode, but it would be pretty cool if after you complete the story you could do some missions with your friend online

You can beat the game with several different play styles and tackle objectives several different ways. The story changes based on the choices you make. As you can be goodie goodie, or literally become the games villain if you so chose. You can murder all of your partners, replace them with evil people more suited to your taste, kill the main bad guy and take his place. You can do this as several different classes, while solving problems with ingenuity, brute force, finesse, or just being very good at talking to people. That's only a small part of it, but there you are 'depth of gameplay'.

When Baldur's Gate won, everyone in the comments who was spamming SPIDER MAN 2 started spamming RIGGED. No where else on the internet did I see that much praise towards Spider Man. To me, the consensus was that it was a good game, but no masterpiece. My personal game of the year was Tears of the Kingdom, but I wasn't expecting it to win game of the year.
Whenever I talk to my friend about baldur's gate he just says it's divinity it's not bad but nothing new. I just told them it's more or less like tabletop but I rather just play the actual thing with people I know. But yeah I really miss the first and second boulders gate.

Both games are great, it’s weird to me that some people can’t seem to understand that BG3 deserved it, but we got two great games this year, that’s more than can be said for recent years in gaming.
the difference for me is i could see myself putting maybe 60 hours into Spider-man 2 to 100%, while i’ve actively put 130 hours into bg3 and not even close to 100%, replay abilty is big factor for me imo
They could do Spider Man 2 better actually. There are some disadvantages. For example lack of the tasks to solve after completing the plotline, and you can’t replay the completed missions again either. For that you should replay the whole game

I don’t get the baldurs gate hype. I just don’t. It looks like the same old corny RPG and looks like it plays like a mobile game. Sure, I can imagine it’s extremely great for people who like that kind of game, but game of the year?? I’ll never ever get around it.

The walking Dead and Dishonored both released in 2012, and almost every decision you make greatly alters both the game world around you and the story’s final outcome. Far Cry 4 can end in the opening scene or be a 30 or so hour experience based on how you play.

Both Spider-Man 2 and Baldur's Gate 3 being nominated for several awards and even GOTY is an achievement within itself. Both licensed superhero games and CRPGS are often both looked down upon when it comes to nominations. They may get nominated for a couple sub categories but almost never GOTY.
Both of them beging nominated for several awards *and* GOTY is actually an amazing feat. On top of that, one of them beating Alan Wake 2 is just insane. And in the same year that companies that have more financial pull on the industry like Bethesda, Microsoft, Activision-Blizzard, and WB not getting a free pass for sub-par effort while barely anything live service, full of micro transactions, loot boxes, season passes or any other consumer exploititive practices is a massive victory for all of us.

@eliasmarquez4257 The AI is NOT better. And less gadgets make it worse because it gives it less variety and makes it even easier. The stealth isn't bad, per se, but it's painfully mediocre. Yes, everything doesn't need to be a challenge, but when it's this ridiculously easy, there's a problem with your gameplay.

I've never played BG3, but from what i've heard about it, it sounds like a programming masterpiece. I was surprised it won considering the competition, but it definitely deserves it.
I'm a neutral observer with popcorn here who just loves games, but BG3 is one of the best games I've played in my entire life. It brought me back to the days of being a degenerate high schooler where I'd wake up, play all day for 14 hours, go to bed, dream about playing more, wake up and do it again, for WEEKS on end. It's an absolute masterpiece.
Imagine being so laughable that you rate game solely by gameplay, completely diminishing role of everyone else who worked on story, music and graphics.
Gameplay should be 80% of what's considerend, unless the story is just SO good, but even them it should only be like 40% at most.
At the end of the day, the gameplay really is all that actually matters. That's why God of War didn't beat out Elden Ring last year.
Why BG3 won over TotK, is well beyond me. Maybe Geoff Keighley is really into fucking bears, who knows?

For example Pathologic had very difficult and not that fun gameplay for me, but i stayed for the story and that strange world. And there is Dishonored, where story honestly wasn't that good, but gameplay carried the whole game. Either way rating game solely by gameplay is wrong in my opinion. Also there's literally interactive movie games.

Some folks have talked about Larian studios making a Star Wars game, I'd love to see them do a Marvel game; any Marvel RPG with BG3 levels of passion would be magnificent.
Talk to two different people who have beat balders Gate and ask what they did in every situation. You will get wildly different answers. Spider man is basically, I pressed the punch button until I won. Pretty game,entertaining combat, but nothing deserving of game of the year.
Imo I feel like spider man 2’s story was a downgrade compared to Spider-Man Ps4. It’s still a great game. But baldurs gate 3 had my friend and I addicted when it first came out and we despise turn based games excluding persona games. We clocked in at around 500 hours total in the first couple of months.

Not true. I haven't actually played baldurs gate, but Inscryptions, a turned based gane, has much more engaging and fun gameplay than spiderman 2, ESPECIALLY in the first act and in Kaycee's Mod (not an actual mod, it's apart of the base game)

Personally I disagree. Millions of people play chess everyday and it’s a turn based game. Baldurs Gate invites people to actually think tactically about their move and the potential consequences that each move can have.
I would argue that thinking your way through a 15 character battle where any move could be your last is a lot more entertaining than button mashing in a lot of action games. It’s all down to personal preference obviously but still

I love turn based RPGs, but I tried Baldur’s Gate 3 and came out incredibly disappointed. I’d had such high expectations set in my head from everything I’d heard about it and it failed to live up to them. I’m not saying Spider-Man 2 should have won, I adored it, but it shouldn’t have won. I don’t think Tears Of The Kingdom should have either. I think it should’ve been Alan Wake 2. It was the devs first time making a survival horror game and they nailed it. I know that Tears Of The Kingdom innovated with the Ultrahand, but going into a completely different genre is more impressive.
Alan Wake 2 is SO MUCH MORE that survival horor. Alan pushed storytelling And visuals narrative into a fucking space. Like theres nothing Like this. Only Hideo And Sam make AAA games Like this nowdays. I personally was disapointed by spiderman 3. Not by its gameplay, but by the story. I think its obvious that I value story (since Im a writer myself) And the story of Spiderman had so much to offer, but fell short for me at the end

Love how they be talking about gameplay when Spider-Man 2 was half the length of the first game. Meanwhile the total time that people spent playing BG3 since it came out totals in the YEARS. Baldur's Gate is extremely complex fr and the tutorial isn't really a tutorial, you really have to figure things out yourself
Spiderman 2 was great, but it didnt really bring many new things to the table, hell i'd even argue it removed more than it added. The games combat is essentially identical for the most part except they practically nuked the gadgets from the last game, and removed the old suit abilites. They did improvr on the traversal mechanics, and the size of the world, but they removed some of the more entertaining open world activities the last game had. Mean while BG3 is likely the most innovative rpgs since skyrim, some might not be a fan of the combat which is fine, but there are plenty who prefer stratigic combat over button mashing.
If only SM2 had split-screen it would be super great for both couch and online gamers.
Sadly the game doesn’t have an online mode, but it would be pretty cool if after you complete the story you could do some missions with your friend online

You can beat the game with several different play styles and tackle objectives several different ways. The story changes based on the choices you make. As you can be goodie goodie, or literally become the games villain if you so chose. You can murder all of your partners, replace them with evil people more suited to your taste, kill the main bad guy and take his place.
You can do this as several different classes, while solving problems with ingenuity, brute force, finesse, or just being very good at talking to people.
That's only a small part of it, but there you are 'depth of gameplay'.

When Baldur's Gate won, everyone in the comments who was spamming SPIDER MAN 2 started spamming RIGGED. No where else on the internet did I see that much praise towards Spider Man. To me, the consensus was that it was a good game, but no masterpiece. My personal game of the year was Tears of the Kingdom, but I wasn't expecting it to win game of the year.
