  • Here's how we make callaloo in the Caribbean using a recipe from Trinidad and Tobago. The flavors of the callaloo is enhanced with coconut milk, and abundance of herbs and spices and how could we forget the uniqueness of this dish with the inclusion of crab. For the full recipe on making Trini callaloo, check out: caribbeanpot.co...

    @nakjon Balancing the "overcook" and getting as much flavor may be a bit tricky. This is why we normally use crabs in the shell... plus the shell adds a wonderful flavor as well. I would add the lump crab (I assume it will still be raw) about 5-8 minutes before the dish is fully cooked.

    In Trinidad we can substitute crab or pigtail with maggie crab or pigtail flavour the pot seasoning. Also there is a bush taken when young from the Dasheen plant, This is the traditional dasheen bush that we call callalo bush, Try it you will like it.

Thanks for great advice! It definitely would not have been the same if I'd just used the crab meat! :)

    Jamaica has this dish but it goes by a different name called pepper pot soup back in the day old folks would use dasheen leaves to make it but as time went by they started using the jamaican leafy green known as calalloo..... So not so strange after all caribbeanpot

  • @caribbeanpot
    @caribbeanpot  12 лет назад

    @rostant999 not sure how you decided what I mean (black thing).. that's not my agenda. I mentioned roti being "Indian" because we didn't invent (not sure what word to use) it. However, when you look at callaloo, doubles, bake and shark, curry crab and dumplings... the list can be long. They're dishes "we" have come up with or perfected.

    @Dalleyne11216 if you use actual crab meat, it will be excellent. Not the plastic looking processed stuff that you get cheap in the grocery stores. I've used it with great success. But you are correct.. the actual bones (not sure how else to call it), does add a lot of flavor.

    @sinfuldavy0 I do go shopping in Toronto, but the leaves found in most stores are not ideal for making callaloo. They're a bit tough and not the nice tender baby leaves (tight rolled ones) that's perfect for making this tasty dish. I assume you, if you use baby spinach, you would be tested to find a difference. thx for sharing your thoughts and recommendation.
