OpenSPOT 4 and ID52 - Running the Georgia AuxComm DSTAR net while portable

  • I decided to call the monthly Georgia AuxComm DSTAR net while operating portable with my new OpenSPOT 4. The main reason I got the OpenSPOT was to operate portable, so I thought running a net would be a good test of it’s capabilities. Should we need to setup DSTAR access in the field, using something like the OpenSPOT could prove useful. In addition to the voice traffic, I also sent a DSTAR picture to test the hotspot capabilities to handle other digital traffic. How well did it work? Watch the video and find out.
Equipment used: OpenSPOT 4 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, Icom ID-52 radio, iPad Air 5.
We conduct our DSTAR net on the 3rd Monday of each month at 8:30pm (ET) on the Georgia State Reflector REF030B, with REF030A as backup. Many of the DSTAR repeaters in Georgia stay linked to REF030B, which allows groups across the state to communicate for regular and emergency communications.
Georgia AuxComm is a new program providing auxiliary communications to our served agency, Georgia Emergency Management / Homeland Security (GEMA/HS). For more information, please visit our website gaauxcomm.org. I am also a member of ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service). The two programs are complementary - with AuxComm having more of a state-level focus and ARES a more local (typically county) focus.

Thank you for posting. I have a Yeasu FT 3D and I haven't used it to it's full potential yet. I'm getting motivated to get a hotspot, which I think will be better for me than just using repeaters, because I'm beginning to travel more and it's a pain to constantly have to look for and program repeaters. Think I'll be getting one soon. Thanks again and 73 KN4MXZ

Walter - the OpenSPOT is perfect for travel. I also have a Yaesu FT-3 and you can crossmode from YSF to DSTAR and DMR - effectively turning your FT3 into a multi-mode radio!

Love the ID52, I had the ID51 for a short time but gave it up as harder than I wanted to deal with back then. Now I can't really afford a new radio. Your video made me more interested in learning D star and maybe one day down the road I will give it another try. 73

Indeed, DSTAR is more fun if you have a local community interested in it. DSTAR is fairly prevalent here in Georgia and is actively used by ARES. The ID52 has a great menu system which makes it easier to use. I also have a D74, which is a great radio but setting up DSTAR is more complicated. I also think the IC-705 has brought new interest to DSTAR.

So far, so good. Great battery life, excellent signal reports. The only negative I have is that the case is a bit fragile - the plastic is a bit thin.

looks great. just purchased IC5100 and OpenSpot4pro. looking forward DSTAR. Any tips on how you designate OS4P as a From repeater. wasn't sure if need to import frequency from RT. would appreciate your advise.

I created a Repeater Group 30 and put my hotspots in there. Each hotspot (I have two) have their own memory channel setup as a DV repeater with a 0 offset. My openspot is set to 445.100. Hope that helps.

I can’t get Brandmeister to work at all on my FT3 or my 878UViiplus

Hmm... most of the time I'm going into the openSPOT via DSTAR (ID52) and out via whatever crossband mode I want. Have you setup a Brandmeister security code?

@@KI4ASK I did, turns out I can’t use the memory channel I created. I had to switch to VFO and worked like a champ.

Can the OS4 go analog to dstar?

Hmmm...I don't think so. It needs to already be in a digital mode to work another digital mode. At least, if there's a way to do it I'm not aware.
