Congrats and welcome to the 80s Club! I came from a Disco II and P38; currently going on 20 years and 250,000 miles on my supercharged FZJ80.
Glad you got your sunroof drains unclogged! Safe travels.

The leak is probably from the drainage tubes from the sun roof, they tend to clog or break apart in a car this old. Have fun! 🙂

Also the windshield seal if the glass had been replaced. The 80 service manual called for application of sealant between the windshield frame and the rubber seal, but most shops just replaced the seal without using any sealant and it leaks in a few short months. BTW, you can apply sealant under the seal without removing the glass.

Seems to only be sun roof drainage clogged. Good to know for windshield 👍

I really like your realistic and practical approach of everything! I have a LC Troopy with poptop and they have their own set of problems like rust and super expensive parts! Also your explanation of the wheel sizes is spot on. Large tires (33+) on the Troopies also frequently cause premature gearbox wear. I stick to the 235/85/16 for that reason. You have the smart approach too I see! On the water leak; make sure there is no water accumulation under the floor carpet which will destroy your floor plate. Who knows how long the leak is already there. Happy New Year!

Hi, there are still available plastic covers for the sunroof. I installed mine today 😊. I'll share the part numbers after 1-2 hours. You can search them and find dealers who have genuine parts for 80 series.

My son has a RHD Landcruiser 80 series (diesel) and it also leaks water on the same side as yours. His does not have the sunroof. It could be rust under the windscreen rubbers/trim if not the drain tube for the sunroof. I hope the ‘Cruiser works out well for you.

I don’t know if you have junk yards in your country but I have bought a few cars from them and the one good thing about that is the only surprise you can get that the vehicle is not as bad as you thought it was. If you don’t know what a junk yard is I’ll bet the guy working on your Land Rover knows where one is. That could be a interesting field trip for you guys if your into old cars.

After owning 6 defenders and 4 discoveries I bought a 2022 Lexus LX470 V8 on LPG. I inspected dozens of Landcruisers 100’s but was not impressed by their state. Important when buying such a Landcruiser is to avoid rust. Toyota’s are not protected against rust. The LC80 is a beautifull car. Running it is expensive though and need a lot of maintenance. Buying it blindly on ebay is not a good idea IMO. The waterleaks are not a good sign and need instant repair and will be expensive though.

2 things. the roof rack holes will corrade and water will get in there and also the sunroof drain on each side. you can got compressed air and blow out with a help of a metal coat hanger. I own a 1996 and 1997 and this is usually. my 1997 i just removed the rack and had a body shop weld in new sheet metal on the roof and had it repainted. It looks perfect and no holes now.

I have to say that I’m not sure that I’d class a transmission problem that allowed you to drive the landy for an additional 1.5hrs as a breakdown. You made it. I have a similar age 110 puma and drive it all over Africa, it’s never left me stranded (but it is pretty much stock) like any old vehicle it has its maintenance issues. I also have a 1997 90 300TDi also stock - it has been incredible given the abuse it gets.
I can understand why you want a second vehicle as backup, I also think I understand why you got a Toyota 80 ‘fixer upper’ - it is going to be great for the youtube channel fixing it up
And comparing the vehicles - great for content.
But for people without a YT channel, I would go for something newer, with good parts and support in the country you are in. For overlanding, you can give up some of the extreme off road ability for durability and peace of mind

That’s a nice Landcruiser for sure,Falken tires seems to be great and probably will be the brand I’m going to mount on my Hilux when the BFG’s are done 🤪 leakage is probably coming from the sunroof drainage as already said so should be an easy fix, old car but so easy to maintain and parts are everywhere available probably, less noise, more comfort and more capable to do everything you want from a car💯👍🏻

No secret the windshield rubber gasket is worn out and needs replacing. Or the drainage tubes from the sunroof are clogged . Great truck but very old. Good luck.

Im sorry, but your complaints are just normal things that are the issue with every 30 year old vehicle. You actually complained about belts? 30 year old exhaust? Sunroof drainage? 30 year old plastics? Fix the the stuff that the PO's didnt fix give it a 3" lift and drive it for 300k... Trust me, you didnt make a mistake. Im sure you will be paying it foreward by dumping that Rover trashcan on some other unsuspecting buyer.

  • @paulboon1100
    @paulboon1100 18 дней назад +1

Little problems with relatively easy fixes, yes you bought a nearly 30 year old 4x4, you will come accross some worn out things, things that come with age. Buy a second hand vehicle and have some issues to fix, buy a new one and you pay the PRICE for not having those niggly little things. Nothing major, as long as the driveline is in good condition it will get you where you want to go.
BTW, the tubes on the sun roof that gets rid of water might have come off at the top, there is two, one left, one on the right, maybe blocked, not a big problem. Old plastics break and tyres wear out, they do!?
And yes the HZ is not like a CRD frugal with fuel or quick but it wont ever stop if you do your oil and filter changes every 5000km. If your thinking about a turbo for the thing to get uphil a bit faster, DO NOT go over 9-10 psi, rather 8psi and fit new bottem end and big end bearings, maybe some new piston rings? I wish you a very good trip.

Clickbait nonsense. I’ve never owned a single Toyota that leaked. It’s just bad luck for you. All cars cannot sustain excessive abuse forever. Old plastic breaking is not uncommon for any manufacturer and tyres are consumable. The reason Toyota has a good name is that they don’t break often and even when they do, they are easy and cheap to repair.

So congrats again on the 80, but few things its your first 80! Mine is a 91 even older factory TD 5spd MT no leaks its a Vx HDJ81 (81 is JDM) 80 designation is other regions in the world..!
Factory lockers are over rated and you probably paid way more than you need to, you even say its never been off road, the factory lockers servo is expensive to repair if it goes, they do! I have LSD only and do real off road and never have I need lockers! I pull out people, lockers are only valuable for 2 reasons! You know when to use them and how to use them! 2: If you wheel hard enough to use them and in a 80s thats allot further than most 4wd are
capable of unless you are rock crawling vs jeeps with 40” tires! Factoy lockers are seriously overrated. Until you want to sell it then the magpies will be attracted to it and again never use them! Which is worse than not knowing how to use them!
I have mentioned this before fix the little things, yes the vents are weak and brittle after 30years! Remember 30years! But once you refresh these parts its another 30years of life! You wont get that in any new car! 100%
