@@jj59575steven this is very true. I don’t think there was a single time this season where I was worried a character would die, and that worry was what kept me interested in the previous seasons. Also, the politics used to be sorta interesting and well done but now it’s just used cheaply and in your face with no layers or reason to exist. None of those scenes deserve more than an eyeroll. The shock value scenes are also really losing their touch because there are like 10 an episode now, and usually none of them are necessary. This whole season just feels like a parody of itself. Episode 7 was better, but they’re gonna need one hell of an episode to make up for this season.
Yeah that sequence in the basement honestly felt way over the edge to me. Granted the show has done horrifyingly disgusting things before (the shrink man scene or herogasm come to mind), but the former ended in a way that it felt semi-necessary (as in the result of that scene couldn’t have been fully accomplished without something equally disgusting), and for the latter, while herogasm was the central location of that episode, the horrifying acts weren’t the focus, they were the background while genuinely interesting things were happening with the main characters. Every single time we cut to the basement, the horrifying acts were the complete focus, and what was the payoff? Is Hughie going to be permanently scared by this? I doubt it’ll even come up two episodes from now (I haven’t seen the most recent yet so won’t speak to it); heck, when Hughie broke down to Starlight, it was barely over those acts, it was over his dad. They gave so much screen time to that stuff in the basement only for it to feel so thoroughly unnecessary, they didn’t even go for some extreme payoff to justify the extreme actions. It’s honestly tarnished my view of the show, I can’t even think about it without immediately feeling disgusted by that sequence, and it might genuinely keep me from watching anymore. The sad thing is, that’s my only major complaint so far. Some stuff isn’t all that interesting, but Homelander remains compelling enough on his own for me to stay engaged. But that sequence is still really getting to me, and idk if I can get over it.
In seasons 1-3, the political commentary was rational in its criticisms with the other side. In season 4 I'd say the writers are definitely letting their bias get the better of them. The reason why people hadn't complained about the politics before was because the scenes with it were generously spaced out, and the criticism was often dished out on both the right and left. In season 4, however, i don't think ive gone a single episode without a drawn out sequence about how homelanders supporters are white conspiracy theory republicans.
@@loganwilliams9104 The show has been making fun of right-wing movements since the beginning. It's kinda weird that you didn't realise that Homelander was a parody of Trump and the MAGA movement since season 1.
@@Neonvolendam It's like you refused to hear my comment, when I openly stated that the criticism was focused on both sides rather than just one, while also stating that while the show did mock the right, it was spaced out between episodes. This new season is just obnoxious in how desperately it wants to show you how conservative and alt right homelanders following is, while showing starlights side as the perfect left goodguys that can do no wrong.
@@loganwilliams9104 Because the movement has become increasingly radicalised by Homelander to the point of violence (which is an obvious nod to the violent radicalisation of the MAGA movement). The show has satirised the corporate attempts to pander to the left-wing audiences but that's as far as it went. It was never really "balanced". It was always left-leaning, from the very beginning. It's still kinda mind blowing that it took you guys 4 season to realise that.
@@Neonvolendam Making fun of how people on the left fall for the attempts at corporate pandering is quite literally making fun of the left. And I don't care how they try to justify in the story for why I have to constantly see dogshit self-insert political narratives in their show, it's still annoying to look at. You seem to have this idea that I'm a right-winger just because I find it cringe when writers use shows as an outlet to go "other side bad and my side perfect" which is not true in the slightest. If every member of the boy's started putting on Maga hats and had to stop homelander from informing the world about gender politics then I'd still be rolling my eye's. The show has quite literally become the same thing it was critiquing in season one with corporate pandering. Glad the season final was entertaining and got me excited for the next season atleast.
Season 4 isn't as good as the other seasons, but I still think the show in general is much better than most others out there. Writing for Television is incredibly difficult and not as easy as many people think it is - especially writing Satire for shows like the Boys. When things work, they're amazing - when they don't - they're disappointing. Lot of people are quick to jump to the conclusion of 'oh if they did this with the story the show would be better', not knowing that their own recommendation would cause other consequential plot dilemmas. Writers can and will make mistakes in their craft, and the best you can hope for is to learn from them to create better stories in the future. That being said though, I'm not excusing The Boys for not being as good this season. I just think that people's expectations are way too high for a show about Evil Corporate Superheroes.
I agree with you, the boys has always made fun of all politics in general. However, I do feel like this season is the weakest so far. the homelander scenes in episode 4 were fun, i like a-train's redemption arc, and the whole butcher tyler durden thing and the compound v virus is also intriguing. everything else just feels annoying, starlight feels a second coming of skyler white, kimikos story about her past is late and honestly kind of boring. I honestly don't care at all about the whole political battle narrative that has been used so heavily this season. I still like the show and I'm sure this season will end well, but so it far it's felt more like a bridge between season 3 and the final season

For me it is 3 things I have a problem with this season
1. The propaganda
2. The projection
3. The emphasis on disgusting scenes
