No seriously. For ONCE (maybe twice) this season I understood Butcher’s point and agreed with his direction. I think he was really trying to play the long game with saving Ryan. I appreciated him bonding with him earlier this season. I totally understand him withholding that information and trying to deliver it to him slowly because that’s a lot to take in and he and Grace don’t know how much Homelander had really gotten into Ryan’s head or how much he was holding on to having a relationship with Homelander.

    • @beastlyman114

@@hahafunnybro exactly. Grace got impatient and just threw everything on him, and made him feel like he was trapped just like his dad was. That will NOT have a good lasting impression on his decisions against humans. Butcher almost had it, if he was alone in there I'm almost positive Ryan couldve been talked down but it might be too late now.

The problem is.. people have increasingly low attention span. And when they see superheros, they expect something like Avengers, where you got tight action sequences VFX and all every 15-30 mins a new place, new fight..
But this time, the boys had 8 hours runtime, with probably 1 hour of the action stuff and 7 hours of boringness.
It was nice though. I did enjoy it. But I would agree that majority people won't like it when they come to watch with the expectation of bloodshed, homelander threatening others, and people fighting each other.

Season 4 really is the opposite of Season 3 in every way.
Season 3 had consecutively amazing episodes only for it to derail itself in the finale. Whereas this season had pretty mid episodes that got brought back with the last two episodes. Even though 3rd season had way better episodes on average, I would argue the 4th season is better even with the slow and sour start-up.
This is the perfect case study as to how much season finales matter. Why climaxes matter in general; you screw your story's ending up and it won't really matter how well you've handled the buildup prior.

Are we going to gloss over the fact that Starlight goes through a journey, is confronted by evil Annie, and then literally moments later doubles down on her stupid victim complex by blaming Hughie for being raped, after just having been raped an episode or two ago. It's not even as if they did it on purpose and had it be a big moment where she realizes and confronts that part of her. She's just genuinely a shitty person who only cares about herself and how things that happen to others affect her.

    • @racool911
      @racool911 2 месяца назад +25

Didn't they literally make the entire season about her confronting how she's a terrible person and questioning if she's fit to be a hero. That's literally one of the biggest character moments of the last episode. The way you feel is how a lot of the world in the show feels, and how she herself felt.
Eventually you gotta just say "fuck it", who cares if you're a shitty person or not, most you can do is whatever makes you feel less shitty, even if you've made a lot of mistakes. Similar to A-Train. That's how she got her powers back.
Annie is a human, she says stuff she shouldn't have said, and probably doesn't mean. That's fine, people aren't themselves during extreme emotional distress. Even if the world or the audience hold it against you, you can't let those mistakes destroy you, you gotta just try your best to do the right thing. What matters is soon after she's still happily with Hughie, and they didn't let it get between them. Most other shows sacrifice natural human reactions to avoid making their characters seem unlikeable to the viewer.

It's clear by the episodes and the comments they've made outside that they think it's just a joke. That is disgusting.
And exactly. If they had made it into a moment where Hughie confronts her, points out how what she's doing in that moment is ridiculous and self centred, it could have been a really genius moment. So you have a character getting extremely fleshed out, but for basically no reason. Hes an irrelevant character in the grand scheme of things, but still has hours dedicated to him. I see what you're saying, but I also think him spending time locked up was important to not just his plot, but many others around him. His actions and trauma finally caught up to him and he had constant reminders that he wasn't able to escape. And then turning himself in because he felt like a monster gave Kimiko time to recognize how she really felt about him. She realized that Frenchie wasn't too good for her like she initially thought. And then when he returned, we saw that Frenchie was still a very much needed person on the team. Without him, the virus wouldn't be strong enough to get rid of Homelander. Sure, we expect Ryan to face Homelander eventually, but do we then expect Ryan to be able to take out Soldier Boy or Sam? I think the virus is gonna be necessary at the end and the good supes are going to accept that they might have to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Otherwise, we wouldn't have needed Frenchie to spend so much time figuring it out. So he may not FEEL like he's having massive effects on the plot right now, but I fully believe we will see the impact of Frenchie's perfected virus in the final season.

Frenchie has been a major player since the first season and he created the mega weapon that Butcher wields going into season 5. He is literally a main character. Calling him irrelevant in the grand scheme of things is wild, especially when everyone seems to love the scenes of The Deep and A-Train which are arguably as minor as Frenchie's. His backstory in season 4 impacts Kimiko and also parallels her past trauma that she is trying to grow from as well. They start the season believing that they are not worthy of the others' love and Frenchie's arc is majorly important to probably the most soul crushing part of season 4. We see how he feels about himself in prior seasons but until he acts on it by turning himself in he is not able to fully forgive himself.

Also the show's criticism of Starlight didn't work here cos we can easily see that, while she was bad to Fireworks..this happened offscreen and when they were younger.
      What WAS onscreen was:
      - her killing an innocent guy and admitting that she's becoming less pure
      - her mother being overbearing and making her act a certain way
Therefore, it's easy to forgive Starlights old actions in Season 4 cos we can just say she was a child influenced by her fam. However, if we really wanted to test her morality then they should've brought up what she did to that innocent guy and stop trying to make her fight against her morality.
They're still trying to make her the pure one faced by her past when she lost that purity a long time ago.

Sage was insufferable not for anything other than the clear hand of the writing team clearly trying to write an intellectual character but being ultimately limited by their own intellectual levels.
At the end of the season it just drops that she predicted several unpredictable and random events and it just happened so perfectly without any set-up makes it quite cheap. If the president didn't blurt out the assassination attempt her whole plan falls apart. He could have kept his cool and not said anything, he could have said why wasn't anything done about this? And then the whole framing arch just dies. The shifter could have not made it into the bunker in time and it would have fell apart.
Overall it's hard to write an intelligent character when you are of average intelligence.

I also think these people interpreted things like A-Train’s energy drink commercial and the Queen Maeve Inclusivity Kingdom as a general takedown of leftist politics instead of what it is, which is an obvious critique of Disney’s corporate wokeness. That’s pretty subjective from where this show has been going lol. First 2 seasons both had political involvement within them, but were very on the down low and were pieced apart. And the third season had the genius idea of attacking both sides of the political spectrum (left/right) by pointing out its flaws which broadens viewers and brings more together. That was perfect. What did season 4 do? Forgot about all of that by showing a very clear sided view of politics that was way too on the nose. Literally a “my beliefs are good, yours bad” scenario which is why it’s taken heat by so many. You couldn’t tell the distinction if professional writers wrote it, or keyboard warriors. Whether or not you believe in those views is another thing, but it isn’t a bright idea to divide what you were bringing together. Again when se3 came out, it countered all the super hero shows that were “woke” by going all angles, now it’s sitting in the same mud puddle along side them lol.

Without the context of the early to mid 2020s and which hashtags trended the day most things going on will just end up feeling incredibly awkward. It's definitely not timeless television. Not to mention that even if you disregard that, you're left with bloated characters with drawn out, inconsequential arcs and backgrounds that pad for time.

    @henrychen310 2 месяца назад +2

Yeah, season 4 is more thematically focused, and all the characters are utilized towards that theme. However, it doesn’t mean that it’s interesting or entertaining.
Frenchie feeling bad about himself for what he’s done has been done before, back with the lamplighter thing seasons ago. His storyline with Colin is just tread ground, and being taken out of prison so quickly after turning himself in makes it feel like the consequences of his arc don’t really matter.
Kimiko’s storyline is so detached from everything and everyone else too. Shining light doesn’t affect anyone but herself, and so any scene with her or Frenchie feels like it doesn’t impact the main plot. Anything with them feels like filler, and if they and their storylines were written out, I think that “confronting your past” would have still been as effective as a theme.
Annie and Homelander have the same theme to their storylines, and they’re both still interesting. Annie’s storyline is interesting because she IS so self-righteous, that being called out on it is interesting.
Hughie’s storyline has the same problem as Frenchie’s where it took time to get off the ground, it felt like a side plot. But he has character development because he forgives A-train in a natural and satisfying way by having a reason to forgive his mom.
Frenchie’s storyline ends the same way it starts. We already know how much he hates himself for the shit he’s done. Reminding us isn’t character development, it’s character stasis. Maybe if Collin was more developed, someone worth caring about, there’d be actual drama there. But such a new character makes that impossible. But his only character trait is an ability to guilt trip Frenchie.
Then there’s a lot of the same shit with whether or not Butcher is on the team, MM bickering with Butcher and Annie bickering with Butcher.
The boys doesn’t feel like a team anymore either when they’re so segregated in their storylines.
As for the politics, the problem isn’t the subject of the satire. Satirizing the evangelical Christians has been done since the first episode and nobody had a problem with it in earlier seasons. Nobody has sympathy for conspiracy theorists either. The issue is that the politics of the show are trying to send a message. They aren’t trying to just be funny. South Park is good at satire because it makes something political ridiculous, and laughing with it is easy because it makes the viewpoint look dumb.
Annie gives an entire monologue about why she got an abortion. Is it sympathetic and make me care about the character? Yes. Does it also feel like it’s the show writers telling me what to think about abortion? Yes. Satire does not tell you what to think about politics. That’s propaganda. Propaganda isn’t funny, even when it agrees with your viewpoint.
So what makes effective satire? Making fun of an easy target without directly telling you what to think. Firecracker is funny because she’s like all the other people who rant about abortion without reading the room at all. Watching her getting beat up is funny too. That’s as far as the show needed to go. Annie giving a monologue about why she got an abortion is what makes it feel political. The key is make fun of the people, without telling you what to think.
That said, I agree with everything you said about Butcher. He went scorched earth from the start of season 3 to the end of season 3, besides saving Ryan. Season 4 needed to show us his development towards going the other way, because as heartwarming as it is to see him go from monster to human, we want to see him go scorched earth.

Soldier Boy went on ice for a season to be found by homelander.
Frenchie dates some random guy then they part ways and he dissapears.
Frenchie turns himself in for an episode then gets out right after.
The Boys get trapped by Sage and Firecracker and everyone makes it out okay.
The Boys get trapped by suped animals that kill every person that's not a major character and everyone makes it out okay.
Hughie gets caught spying on Homelander and he makes it out okay.
Hughie gets caught spying on tek knight and he makes it out okay.
A shapeshifting assassin appears and kidnaps Starlight. Starlight escapes and kills the Assassin next episode.
It feels like they could have skipped this season and started s5 with a slight time jump and just addressed the few things that did change in the first episode. Or just opened it with the final episode of this season followed by a few lines.

Now the sattire is more one side starlighters good other side homelanders bad and nothing is ever that simple there will always be bad on both ends. I do see why people legit dislike the show, especially season 4, and why people still love it. I do feel that the writers are just hoping people ignore critical plot holes, and the smaller ones in the grand scheme of things. Like Ryna switching back and forth between liking evil things and feeling sad about them. I get he's a teenager and finding stuff out, but he legit likes it when some people are killed, then feels bad other times? I also found that Hughie was a joke here and for all the wrong reasons. Like he's s*xually assaulted and it's played for laughs? And Starlight giving him grief for the whole shapeshifter thing when he had no idea (but figured it out in the end), and he's made to be the bad guy?
I don't think it's awful, but it was certainly nowhere near the tight writing of S1, and I liked S2 as well even if a lot of people didn't. There were big problems here and mainly relied on viewers to ignore the many, many, small plot holes and inconveniences. As I said, if you like the show, absolutely fair, but I was disappointed and feel the show could be better for everyone and fans. It can be a whole lot better!

My main issue with this season is that no matter how you see it, it was a 2 year wait for what essentially felt like filler and build up, and more than likely we’ll have to wait another two years for get any pay off. I also don’t believe that the season progressed far enough through escalation, at this point I don’t care that Homelander is on the brink of breaking point, he’s been like that for 2 and a bit seasons now. The season should’ve ended with the supes completely taking over it’s just not enough for how long the wait was.
Now of course I am missing out on the big elephant in the room in Gen V filling that gap in between. I’m sorry but Gen V does not hold a candle in the slightest, it was fine but overall I didn’t really care and it didn’t progress the boys storyline far enough to justify its existence.

The finale almost redeemed the whole season but come on.

nah this is a silly take. obviously everyone is fine w/ character development. and this vid fronts as if everyone is repulsed by conversations. but good seasons / good entertainment does character development WHILE moving plot forward. both. not either/or. but feels like half the season is just yap yap and things only started getting real last 2-3 eps of season. they could have done the same character development w/ either shorter scenes, or sprinkle it in throughout plot development. so sure character development is crucial to the story, but you need both character and plot development. this only had one for a major part of the season. really seems like they only had material for 5 episodes (including character development) and dragged it out.

Character development works best when it seems on purpose and with/of/for the actual story rather than tacked-on. Most of the "character development" in season 4 seemed like 'oh, in the past, by the way, I did this thing and now I'm going to go against my own interests for awhile.' This is bad, lazy writing. It feels like "filler" because, well, it mostly is. And it slows down and jumbles up the viewing experience.

  • @paulgowler5181
    @paulgowler5181 2 месяца назад +2

Agree with almost all of this. The thing is, for identification and transportation to happen with any fiction, you need to be able to buy the characters, their actions and motivations. So for Butcher to go full scorched earth, we have to empathise with why he does that. He's tried so hard to take the path he thinks Becca would want, and all it brings him is more pain and more failure. It breaks something in him. It's like losing Becca all over again.
I loved all of the character arcs. The whole season was about coming to terms with who you really are. MM is not a leader, he's a soldier, because he needs that small degree of absolution he gets from "just following orders". Frenchie and Kamiko are both continued with the consequences of their actions and have to find a way to carry that heavy baggage. Starlight has to acknowledge and even embrace the more unsavoury aspects of her personality and finds a way to put that into the service of protecting the people she loves. Huey has to reconcile who he used to be with the hardened mercenary he has essentially become. I loved that he had that speech about it, in which he says blood used to freak him out and now he barely flinches, and a few scenes later we see him drenched in blood and barely reacting. I loved how A Train is confronted with the real heroism of his brother and the awe of the kid and he comes to recognise that heroism is about doing the right thing and how that leads to him being willing to sacrifice himself, which he demonstrates by betraying Homelander which he knows is a death sentence if he's discovered. I love how even though he sort of flees, he ensures his family is safe and even tries to save Ashley. I love the strength of the connection built up between Huey and starlight to the extent that her leaving can't possibly be seen as betrayal or abandonment because they are joined by the same motivations that they recognise are bigger than either of them, and that her instant acceptance of his signal to flee communicates the respect and belief she has in him that he's so craved from her. I love that the Deep has just said fuck it and fully leaned into the supervillain role, which actually shows how weak he is because he's taken the easy path in his circumstances.
There were only two aspects of this season I didn't like. The scene where Deep kills the octopus, the comedy was massively overdone. I thought it should actually have been a very poignant moment. Deep is scumbag but he doesn't know he's a scumbag, not really, and he is often a very sensitive character. There were times when his heart was genuinely in the right place, and even the awful things he did, like sexually assaulting Starlight, it's like he just doesn't have the self awareness to even understand why that was so heinous. So killing his lover was a sort of valediction to the small part of him that was or at least aspired to be good. I think they did it like that to demonstrate the cold-blooded intentionality of it, as he was given multiple chances to change his mind; also, it was literally like the comedy of his character dying. He was always the comic relief, but now he's a ruthless killer and there's nothing really funny about him now. So even this scene I can accept.
But the thing I can't accept is what they did to Huey's dad. They made him die a killer. There was something pure and innocent about the character, and they took that from him and made him die literally with blood in his hands, for no real payoff. The whole JarJar thing could easily have been related to Huey by his mum. It would have been a touching scene. Huey has come in with V in his pocket. His mum says he must be confused and hurt about her being made executor, and saying his dad had told her about a cat called JaJar, etc, had told her that Huey was such a good person because he would hold on even when things looked futile, but that that was also his weakness because he found letting go so hard. She leaves to get coffee, not the other way around, Huey pulls out the V, turns it in his hands, contemplates, and returns it to his pocket. His mum comes back in with the coffee, and while they stand there, silently rebuilding the relationship, his dad dies peacefully.

To be fair Kimiko and Frenchie's character development arcs were extremely weak and random. They could have gone so many different ways about those that it really just felt like they threw them in there as fillers. Same with Hughie's, there was absolutely no reason to drag his dad's arc on for 5 episodes, it could have been closed up in one, maybe two. S4 was by far the weakest season so far, they kinda fumbled the bag with this one. Luckily the last 3 episodes saved it
