I am 1,79 metres tall, I own one since late last March (2014) and I reach the ground with at least one of my tips, in any circumstance. It is an incredibly easy big bike to ride. Confidence grows on you when riding it. I ride mine every day, always with a smile on my face, regardless of the weather and traffic conditions. I don't know that many bikes that would please me half as much.
8 years on since I got my 1190R (purchased new from the dealer) and it's still as awesome today as when I first rode it. Seriously fast and also very capable off-road. Amongst a host of farkles that I've fitted to it, some of the more notable ones include a Rottweiler air intake system, a fuel system / ABS dongle, a Scotts steering damper, and a Wings (short) exhaust. In summary, it's a beast !
Picked one up yesterday(August 12,2015). I've dreamed of owning a 990. But having the 1190r has put that dream asleep. I'll be slinging dirt in the morning😁
This bike is for sale right now in Germany. Saw it at the Hamburg show...very very nice bike. Clean, light, purpose built no extra bullshit weight. Perfect counter point to my MTS1200S. Very impressed.
Great camerawork, great sound, and Michael Guy is fantastic as always. If this marks the new video standard for MCN, 2013 is gonna be a cracking good year!
Michael guys a great journo! I've waited for this review for what seems like a lifetime now and am chuffed at michaels reaction to the bike. Can't wait for the final review of this bike!!!
The thing is it's the bike. The first time I road a 990 Adventure I was the same. That was 3 years ago and I still think it's one of the best bikes I have ever ridden (and I've ridden hundreds!); the bike really is that good. If you ride give yourself a treat and ride one. I am not a salesman or work for KTM ;^)
So far I like looks/styling. Many of the big adventure bikes look ugly even if they are great performers. I'd like to see how it looks with all the protective gear bolted on.
Awesome review, as always! As far as I know the 1190 R come with no ABS/traction control and a 21/18" wheels. Those are the major diff with the 1190. Am I right? Love the videos. And as a personal request I would like to see a review of the Honda Crosstourer. Any chance you will be doing one anytime soon?
I got this bike yesterday and I'm telling you it rocks!!! The feeling on it is amazing and it's reaaaaaaly fast...I also have a cbr6oof and I know about fast ;-)
I was hardcore BMW guy for years, after riding my buddy's Pikes Peak last year, I went to a dealer and traded my BMW Adventure really fast ! I love my Ducati but i think this KTM would be a great addition ..... I will never go back to overweight and under powered BMW !!!
why does this touring bike has >500 cc engine ? i mean they are more oriented toward comfort in long drives right ? some 250 cc bikes i tried once feels nimble and quick enough .. sports bikes needs more cc .. its understandable .. but why these touring bikes ? any gentleman would bother to explain ? :)
Are you sure of that price? In the U.K,.I think it's about £11-12,800? Even the soon to be launched liquid cooled BMW R1200GS is only £13,800 in its most expensive guise.
The KTM 1190 is the BEST all around Motor Cycle that has ever been bult, if I was not unemployed and with 5 kids to feed I would buy one in a HEART BEAT :(
Multi-strada quick is not a comment to be tossed around without good foundations, as I've test ridden one 2yrs ago and they're a hell of a bike the, however was warned against buying it as the electrics are not up to the damp in the U.K.? So, I'm sticking with my blackbird for the time being.
I'm not sure if their income is the issue here. The KTM expert viewed their plans to travel the long way round the world on adventure motorbikes and stated in his opinion that their trip couldn't be completed because it looked too hard, the marketing decision equivalent of declaring the Titanic unsinkable.
I LOVE my 990... but based on the riding I do I'm beginning to think this bike is well suited for me. Time will tell I won't be trading in for at least 2 years so I might be ready for a change by then :)
We all know that the 990 Adventure was the best on off-road, the best of all adventure bikes. So what we want is a review or a comparison with the 990.
You can almost feel the excitement oozing through the lap top from this guy, I can't wait to trade the GSA in, Having rode through the Tanami desert ,along the Gibb river road an to Nhulunbuy in the northern Territory its just too heavy in the sand I couldn't count how many times I came adrift in the soft stuff,. The KTM seems to do it all you can go 10/10ths on the bitumen and then have real fun in the dirt GG
Missing -> Shaft drive ; Cruise control for long distances in AU ; full LED lighting, floods etc and a decent large OLED cockpit - multifunction display. Cant really say it class leading otherwise - weight - must by
It's true that Michael is one of a very few motorcycle reporters that tells it like it is, regardless of the manufacture. However, this particular video shows him to be a little less objective, also it doesn't help when he's standing outside the KTM headquarters. Also, Michael, we all know you're an honest bloke, but if you don't mind can you reduce the frequency of the word "genuinely"? Thanks.
as a ktm 990 adv owner i don't like the exhaust, i mean that huge pipe there doesn't feel quite right, what if i drop it and i breaks, compared to my 990 under the seat exhaust that are protected by the bars. also this guy did not told as anything about the traction control, abs, etc... it really sucks watching ktm wanting to be like a bmw gs1200 instead of doing their own thing, which they are quite good at. how about ktm doing a new 700cc adventure with lots of fuel capacity instead of this.
I've tried adv 1190. It was quite powerful and promising BUT the heat! Bike was so hot 30mph(50kmh) speed wasn't enough relieve my leg. This problem occured in just a 20min ride. Riding like this for a long time would be torture I mean this may seem like a small thing but, the users of these kinds of bikes look for comfort. Which KTM seems like failed. Unless it was a problem of the bike i've ridden
It's quote from review "we talk multi strada quick...easily " which means that MS is quickest of all on tarmac for shore until this but again i have little doubt MS have 150bhp, but if this KTM is so close to MS on tarmac...for off road we probably talk about The BEST in it's class which is big bore 1200ccm big Adventure bike but price will be equal "The BEST" whit full gizmos certainly not below € 16,000, which means 16,000 pounds
O.k now i look price in UK,(I must admit it's nice surprise, and my bad in first prediction) "naked" or basic version is 13,195 pounds which is compared with overestimated Ducati and BMW also, decent and fair price
Not a bad bike but where the shaft drive . That what we want in that adventure bike really . So ok give us sprockets and a chain alright but then you be given us a oversize back sprocket that be more low down power and high rews with using more fuel
Abs.
Truth to be told KTM was not wrong. Despite months of preparation guys failed to ride through tough Siberian bogs and have chosen to use train. Hollywood style. "Terra Circa" shows how it should be done
That's pretty funny. The KTM representative on The Long Way Round stated the trip Ewan and Charlie were planning couldn't be done. Presumably if representative of KTM he was correct, had the lads ridden KTM's they would be currently living in separate Mongolian yurts, dining on week-old sheep's testicles, singing Kumbaya by candlelight, and hanging their dirty laundry on the wrecked and broken remains of their stalled KTM"s.
But if you are under 5"7 you would need to parachute onto the bike while it's moving, and never ever stop cause you are never touching the ground even with your toes till you run out of gas and fall over. Awesome bike if you are in the NBA.
Arn't KTM the guys who refused to sponsor Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman's motorcycle trip Long Way Round because they thought it was too hard and was impossible to achieve? That's my impression of KTM's adventure motorcycling.
I hope the new KTM is more than 990. not to make shaft drive was mistake. 990 was crap to maintain!! drove one 64 532 km broken fuel pumps and so on electric problems always! fun to ride! but bad quality.
This guys enthusiasm is awsome. Its nice to watch someone talking so passionetly about a bike!

Great review! Michael always does an awesome job and I love watching his reports.
This bloke is great, what a smile on his face. The sort of bloke you'd like to know. And a good review too.
Picked one up yesterday(August 12,2015). I've dreamed of owning a 990. But having the 1190r has put that dream asleep. I'll be slinging dirt in the morning😁

I do not care about this category of bike at all but I really love watching your reports. So well done and keep it up, love the enthusiasm.
Look at his smile! Could he be more delighted? Great review!
The thing is it's the bike. The first time I road a 990 Adventure I was the same. Real adventure is done from a single, always was, always will be:)
Where the big bikes turn around, that is our beginning!
So far I like looks/styling. Many of the big adventure bikes look ugly even if they are great performers. I'd like to see how it looks with all the protective gear bolted on.
Nothing wrong with my 2013 f800gs as a duel sport bike.I have found it a surprisingly stable bike on and off rd with good enough power.
Awesome review, as always! As far as I know the 1190 R come with no ABS/traction control and a 21/18" wheels. Those are the major diff with the 1190. Am I right? Love the videos. is the exhaust the lowest part of the bike? looks like it might be easy to get crushed while off roading.
Good pre-review. Looks like KTM will have a winner with this bike.
Awesome review! Michael is the best.
I got this bike yesterday and I'm telling you it rocks!!! The feeling on it is amazing and it's reaaaaaaly fast...I also have a cbr6oof and I know about fast ;-)
me too
I was hardcore BMW guy for years, after riding my buddy's Pikes Peak last year, I went to a dealer and traded my BMW Adventure really fast ! I love my Ducati but i think this KTM would be a great addition .....
I will never go back to overweight and under powered BMW !!!
Any chance that you got to test ride the upcoming 390 Duke?
Solid review. Great pics too!
yes,u are right, didnt saw anybody smiling so much when presenting a motorcycle:D
why does this touring bike has >500 cc engine ? i mean they are more oriented toward comfort in long drives right ?
some 250 cc bikes i tried once feels nimble and quick enough .. sports bikes needs more cc .. its understandable .. but why these touring bikes ? any gentleman would bother to explain ? :)
Is it still a good offroad bike?
What jacket is he wearing?
Any word on price?
Can't wait to get my 1190r
it will be in the 2014 model year for us consumers according to what i have read.
Are you sure of that price? In the U.K,.I think it's about £11-12,800? Even the soon to be launched liquid cooled BMW R1200GS is only £13,800 in its most expensive guise.
I love my 990 SMT but I know if I demo ride this bike I may well trade in...awesome bike, it WILL be my next!
The KTM 1190 is the BEST all around Motor Cycle that has ever been bult, if I was not unemployed and with 5 kids to feed I would buy one in a HEART BEAT :(

I wish I could come and hang out with you guys!!
I'm not sure if their income is the issue here. The KTM expert viewed their plans to travel the long way round the world on adventure motorbikes and stated in his opinion that their trip couldn't be completed because it looked too hard, the marketing decision equivalent of declaring the Titanic unsinkable.
KTM makes many good bikes :) For on- and offroad ;)
I LOVE my 990... but based on the riding I do I'm beginning to think this bike is well suited for me. Time will tell I won't be trading in for at least 2 years so I might be ready for a change by then :)
A 150bhp adventure bike?
Nice bike, makes me grin also.

i wish they made a smaller version of this maybe 400cc
really lovely video!!
Great review
Michael Guy is a cool lad!!!
I cant wait for mine!!!!
as a ktm 990 adv owner i don't like the exhaust, i mean that huge pipe there doesn't feel quite right, what if i drop it and i breaks, compared to my 990 under the seat exhaust that are protected by the bars. also this guy did not told as anything about the traction control, abs, etc... it really sucks watching ktm wanting to be like a bmw gs1200 instead of doing their own thing, which they are quite good at. how about ktm doing a new 700cc adventure with lots of fuel capacity instead of this.
i totally agree.
As he said at the start of de review this is not the finished product.
I've tried adv 1190. It was quite powerful and promising

Multistrada what?
Great stuff.
looks better then the 990 in my opinion, a lot better =)

Look at the smile on his face....
Já a vi ao vivo na motoshow..
Sounds like a good un, the looks need to grow on me a bit yet but I'm sure it will , GS beater ? New GS .....???
I wish ktm makes a 390 adventure
dual purpose shape supersports engine, interesting mix but a bad idea
Only brand that this bike reveal is "Ducati" gas cap in 2:44...
Who is developing this bike? KTM or Ducati?!?
Not a bad bike but where the shaft drive . That what we want in that adventure bike really . So ok give us sprockets and a chain alright but then you be given us a oversize back sprocket that be more low down power and high rews with using more fuel
I think the cool guy meme should be replaced with a picture of Michael Guy!

Seems you're so genuinly genuine Lol
dream bike

is that a SuperDuke behind him and the Adventure????
But if you are under 5"7 you would need to parachute onto the bike while it's moving, and never ever stop cause you are never touching the ground even with your toes till you run out of gas and fall over. Awesome bike if you are in the NBA.
boxwoodgreen grow some legs buddy
mi motico dentro de tres años :D
Why buy them if you have the social status to get them for free?
Btw i thought the rider was gonna come in his pants when talking lol
Arn't KTM the guys who refused to sponsor Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman's motorcycle trip Long Way Round because they thought it was too hard and was impossible to achieve?
That's my impression of KTM's adventure motorcycling.

raw denim best te doen
Yeah, thats why there were 68 bmws and only 2 ktms in dakar 2013... oh wait.
Aren't Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman two millionairs who could easily afford two motorcycles?
That grin says an AWFUL lot.
genuinely.
If that's the face after riding it, imagine when he was riding it......
Agreed. That said, I think i'd be the same if i was being paid to do that lol.
The future will be Orange!
why always patronizing?
Thank god KTM have pissed off the big boys again.
