Connery's grey suit when meeting Goldfinger at his ranch should be any mans sartorial goal. Clean lines, effortlessly cool, tailored to within an inch of its life. Perfection.
Good fashion review, Bubba - well-stated. I’ve always liked waistcoats, whether or not they’re considered “in fashion.” Personally, I find Roger Moore’s sartorial style the most dated.
As I recall, there were different cuts of the film, or something slightly strange about the line reading in the scene. Doesn't Bond say something like: "Three more ticks.."? That makes no sense if the timer stopped at 007 originally, as it would mean that Bond implies yhe number 004 as being of some importance. This always puzzled me as a kid.
@@Apanblod You're absolutely right. Bond DOES say "Three more ticks", because the counter originally did end at "003". It was only later this was changed, to add that extra "007" in-joke, but Connery's original line was kept - but I can't say for certain if it was because the producers forgot, didn't care, or it wasn't possible to change Connery's line as well.
@@bonghunezhou5051 but Goldfinger certainly deserved all the accolades. There were no films like this when people first saw it in 1964. It had a cultural impact like Jaws and Star Wars.
Hands down the absolute best bond film. I still get chills hearing Shirley Bassey singing the theme. From odd job to the db5 to the fight in fort Knox, nothing will ever compare to this movie Btw ... 1964 was the year that this was released as well as when the beatles hit America ... perfect timing for a country that was still in shock and still mourning the loss of jfk. We needed some good distractions and we got the best
Goldfinger's great performances and iconic moments led to a drastic change in the action film genre for the better. One of the best films ever made. 10/10
Goldfinger was a landmark film....Before this movie was made, I can't think of another like it; an action film with a big budget, cartoon-like villains sex, gadgets and a sense of humor. AFTER this movie, it spawned a genre. Starwars and Raiders of the Lost Ark are cut from the same piece of cloth. I was 13 when the movie premiered and it just blew me away.
Best classic bond movie, casino royal is without a doubt the best one tho, it may not be true to the character from the book but it doesn't have to be in order to be good
The one that cemented the series as a phenomenon. Iconic, and for the first hour this film is brilliant and well paced. When Bond gets to Goldfinger’s farm, it starts to slow down, but as soon as Operation Grand Slam begins, it starts to pick up again. Very much in my top 10 favourite films of the series. Also kudos for mentioning Connery’s appearance in NSNA, terrible film but Connery is great in the film. Also special mention to Michael Collins, the actor who dubbed Frobe’s performance, No Mr Bond, I expect you to DIIIEEE. Perfect. As for Pussy Galore, yes in the novel she changes orientation due to meeting Bond, but in the novel Trigger Mortis, Pussy Galore reverts back to her true self, after meeting the daughter of an old friend of Bond’s.
Years before I ever saw the movie....I fell in love with the soundtrack. I spent about a week with my older brother & his wife.....& he had the album. I remember listening to it over & over. I've always had a thing for great film scores, but 'Goldfinger' was probably where it all began for me. Or at least when I started paying attention.
I had a similiar experience with another James Bond film. With Spectre, it was the first time I really started to notice the musical score in a film. And, like you, I think it started an appreciation of film scores.
Thunderball is one I want to enjoy but it's impossible to do so. I do appreciate the fact that it's team effort to find the bombs but the film is stuck in neutral throughout it's duration.
I think the golf scene is part of what makes this film the best. They manage to have some moments where Bond is not doing action, is not seducing some woman, and is not gambling. They had similar in From Russia With Love, but when it came to Thunderball they started to lose the subtlety and the film is weaker as a result. Plus that sped-up boat scene at the end is hilariously bad. If someone could edit Thunderball to fix that scene would be twice as good.
Rip to the legendary James Bond star Sir Sean Connery one of the best and was one of my favorites and I am only 33 and been a big Bond fan since I was 8 years in 95. Sir Sean Connery 1930-2020
Trivia about the soundtrack: That's Leppelin's Jimmy Page on guitar back on his studio days. And Shirley was such a badass diva that she " faded " at the end of the long note at the end.,
You have to wonder how it all went down. I assume he knocked her out, then undressed her, but I guess she was not wearing much. I suppose he painted her in the bath, but whether he poured paint in the bath, used a paint gun, or a brush is anyone's guess. Someone must have gone out of their way to make a big batch of gold paint, which Oddjob then had to bring with him. Then how did he get her on the bed without getting gold paint all over himself, unless he just sat around waiting for it to dry. The thought of Oddjob walking through the hotel lobby with gold paint on his hands and suit is pretty hilarious.
Fantastic coverage of an absolute classic. Your reviews are just excellent- framing the time period and the context of what surrounded the film as well as giving us great clips and information that is probably unknown to all but the most devoted fans. This represents the Peak of James Bond and my personal favorite of the series. Sure, I think Casino Royale might just be the best Bond film ever but this one holds a special place for me because it was the very first one I ever saw and started my lifelong fandom. As you pointed out, this is the blueprint of the entire franchise and the genre itself - so it’s influence really can’t be overstated.
Goldfinger and Thunderball are my two favorite Bond films. There were some other very good Bond films in the franchise but these two stand head and shoulders above all the others IMO. Also, Sean Connery IS James Bond.
I'm not deaf but I have a couple of people who yap continuously while watching videos. I must say the person who checked the subtitles must have had an off (but funny) day. You've got to see them to understand Shitty Chitty Bang Bang is the best:)
It's the car. As an eight year-old in '64 (early '65 when i saw Goldfinger) it has has always been that very sharp Aston Martin DB5. My parents, younger brother and I went to the World's Fair in New York and we got to see James Bond's car really up close. Whether it was the movie car or a touring replica I'm not certain but the spokesmodel extolled the virtues of that special car. My father managed to film about thirty seconds coming down an escalator and moving around it another 270 degrees worth.
Definitely agree with your review. This is my favourite Bond film with so many quotable lines and enjoyable 60s action. I read the book recently and was pretty disappointed with the story, as I was expecting it to be great. One of the few instances for me where the movie surpases the book.
This wasn't his first time wearing a hair piece. He wore one the entire series of 007 films he was in. He even wore a hair piece in Darby O'Gill and the Little People back in 1959 as he started going bald at 21. With that said, #RIP007
The Goldfinger Theme song is hands down the best. If you listen carefully, you can hear the Bond theme in certain passages. I don't think that ever happened in another Bond Title song. Perhaps this is because John Barry himself was co-writer, along with....Anthony Newley, who recorded early versions on the song. Shirley Bassey's perfect vocal performance is iconic. Who doesn't get a little chill when they hear those opening bars in the intro? Barely known trivia: A young Jimmy Page was on one of the acoustic guitars during the soundtrack recording session.
My favourite Bond, both movie and book. But it is spoiled by one scene: when Tilly's car has it's whole side shredded by the Aston Martin and we're just supposed to ignore the fact that only the tires blowing out is commented on. Inexcusably sloppy, but your comments on this being Connery's finest turn as Bond and all the other praise you gave this film is spot on.
The hilarious thing about Gert Frobe is Goldfinger is that I'm currently watching him and the DOCTOR MABUSE Sixties series, where he plays the avuncular hero Inspector Lohman.
As much as I like this film, I've never been able to see it as "the best Bond film ever" as the inmense majority of people deem it to be, but still one of the best films in this long-running franchise nevertheless.
jordel2010: Me being kind of old, Goldfinger was the first Bond film I ever saw. I believe many people put this down as the best because Sean Connery is still widely viewed as the original and best Bond, and Goldfinger was probably his best performance as 007. And, of course, the first real introduction to Bond gadgets. From Russia With Love was also damn good. Daniel Craig’s reboot comes the closest to the original feel that Connery’s Bond had, IMHO.
@@Primus54 To me, Connery was and still is the best. My favorite Bond film of all time is From Russia With Love; to me, better than Goldfinger. Like I said, I'm on the minority not regarding Goldfinger as the best ever but I still think is a great film.
jordel2010: Well I’d say we’re pretty much of the same mind, my friend. I also thought Craig’s debut in Casino Royale was a real good movie and other than the beginning was very close to the book. Also, I rate Skyfall very high for its emotional ending. Nice chatting with you!
Definitely the best Bond film, but not my favorite - although it's near the top of the list. It's got most of the iconic Bond moments - gold painted woman, Aston Martin, ejector seat, giant laser, steel rimmed bowler hat, Oddjob, Pussy Galore. Although I wouldn't say Honor Blackman is the most attractive Bond girl, I just really like the actress herself. She is probably the Bond girl where the actor matched the character the closest, except for maybe Grace Jones. She can judo throw people. She can ride a horse really well. Not sure if she can fly a plane, but I would not put money on her NOT being able to. I love how she was so confident that she scared all the men, even Connery. No-one knew how to handle her because she was so unreserved, which was still not a thing considered appropriate for women at the time. She would make a point of saying her character's name all the time because she found it funny how the men all cringed. And when she was interviewed about the movie she would say her character's name because the interviewers tried to avoid saying it. What a legend. (Also, there are jokey references to Goldfinger in The Avengers related to explaining where Dr Cathy Gale had gone to, including a postcard from Fort Knox.)
Cool I have that poster @0:36 . I would say his Toupee was the best in this film. It seems he tried wearing the same type of toupee from Thunderball in Never say Never but don't look well since he was 20 yrs older . The Aston Martin was a great touch and Odd Job was a memorable character of the film. I was disappointed he didn't use the machine guns on the car to mow anyone down but the new film has Craig doing a 360 mowing them down in his car . I heard so much about Goldfinger from so many people as a kid that I had to see the next film. This film had Connery acting more like the previous films and set the tone for gadgets I found the beginning slow till he got the car but the golfing was dull but I knew Connery enjoyed it since I heard he golfed alot after this film.
Just off a silly, self-glorifying Titanic review, I appreciate all the more your fact-based understating. You let the story speak for itself, and you have a great voice and clarity of speech. A solid 10-on-10 from me.
One of the best. Craig never could achieve this level of sophistication and even he admitted he has many reservations about taking the role. He looked ill at ease in the first and only achieved a modicum of respect in the 2nd but never as brilliantly done as Pierce Brosnan even.
No way! I just found this series and this video is brand new! Big big Bond fan. Its appreciated..anything to fill the time since theres... No Time to Die!
It's often said that this movie set the template for Bond films going forward, but I would argue it produced the second template. The first being From Russian With Love. From here on you have two types of Bond films. You have your Goldfinger clones (You Only Live Twice, Diamonds are Forever, Moonraker, A View to a Kill) and your FRWL clones (OHMSS, For Your Eyes Only, The Living Daylights, Casino Royale). I don't think it's a coincidence that the FRWL clones are the better films. FRWL is a better movie.
At the 50th anniversary of the movie I saw the film again on a long flight from Brisbane to LA. Still had a lot of time to think about the movie and wondered if one of the henchmen kept popping up in different scenes. Eventually I wrote an outline and just for the hell of it, commissioned a storyboard of the story called, “The Last Henchman”. If you folks reading this have time to waste, well, here’s the first page: fav.me/ddpckle
If you liked Gert Fröbe in Goldfinger I recommend you watch "Es geschah am hellichten Tag" ("It Happened in Broad Daylight", 1958). Possibly the movie that made him get casted for "Goldfinger" in the first place. It's an excellent Swiss-German film.
From Russia With Love is not only my favorite Bond film but I think it’s the best in general. Russia with Love was far from being campy. As the franchise progressed Bond went further and further in the campy domain. Don’t get me wrong, I love some of those campy Bond films but in my opinion nothing comes close to the masterpiece that is From Russia With Love! With all that being said I will admit that Goldfinger is a Phenomenal movie as well! It managed to hit all the right marks and Sean Connery gave another stellar performance as Bond but for me personally I still prefer From Russia With Love. That movie holds a very nostalgic place in my heart that is very difficult for me to explain. Both movies are fantastic and if anyone has never seen a classic Bond film with Sean Connery then you need to do yourself a favor and watch Goldfinger! If you dig that then you’ll love From Russia with love!
Harold Sakata was next seen in a Gilligan's Island episode he played Ramoo the henchman of Rory Calhoun who guest starred as Jonathan Kincaid a great white hunter who wanted to hunt a person so Gilligan was chosen to be his quarry it's a great spoof of The Most Dangerous Game. After that Harold Sakata vanished I never saw him in anything again.
EON was thinking of changing Pussy Galore’s name, but they arranged a photo of Honor Blackman with Prince Philip, on the condition that the publication use the caption “Pussy and the Prince.” When no one blinked, they stuck with Fleming’s original name.
Can’t be many of us men who didn’t feel a slight sense of dread at the laser table scene, in the book it was a circular saw which would have been awful if they had used it in the movie. The Corgi diecast model of the DB5 was a favourite of mine as a kid and most of us had one although the figure who sat in the passenger seat didn’t last long.
I am sorry to one of those in disagreement, but as a Bond Fan, this is the Bond film I hatdc the most. During the entire time, Bond is held captive, making unsuccessful attempts to play saboteur to Goldfinger's plans, and is only successful because he nailed Pussy Galore hard enough for her to overcome for him in the 11th hour. From James Bond, I expect more capable spy work from him.
Connery's grey suit when meeting Goldfinger at his ranch should be any mans sartorial goal. Clean lines, effortlessly cool, tailored to within an inch of its life. Perfection.
Noy keen on the lapels on the waistcoat, otherwise 9/10
I prefer Lazenby's suit worn in Gumbold's office.
Mason and Sons actually sells an exact replica of the Goldfinger suit nowadays.
Good fashion review, Bubba - well-stated. I’ve always liked waistcoats, whether or not they’re considered “in fashion.”

Just off a silly, self-glorifying Titanic review, I appreciate all the more your fact-based understating. You let the story speak for itself, and you have a great voice and clarity of speech. A solid 10-on-10 from me.
Best Bond film ever.
One of the best. Craig never could achieve this level of sophistication and even he admitted he has many reservations about taking the role. He looked ill at ease in the first and only achieved a modicum of respect in the 2nd but never as brilliantly done as Pierce Brosnan even.
I was 12 when it came out in 1964, and of course I and everybody else went to see it. It's still one of my favorite movies, from a wonderful era.
For the longest time this was my favourite in the series but OHMSS has in the last year or so taken that spot.
OHMSS is the most grossly underrated Bond film.
@@jordel2010 Not amongst Bond fans. OHMSS is greatly appreciated for the smooth genius it is.
No way! I just found this series and this video is brand new! Big big Bond fan. Its appreciated..anything to fill the time since theres... No Time to Die!
Very nice review; thank you a lot for uploading
That's one hell of a good bit of fake hair on Connery. Had no idea.
For sure. I had a hard time believing it the first time I heard it.
Just so you know... The white jacket on Bond is a DINNER jacket, not a smoking jacket. A smoking jacket is only worn at home.
Gold is one of my favorite colors strangely. It's a rich color.
The World Is Not Enough has the similar plot like Goldfinger
I love this series. Can't wait for all 26, yes 26 I'm including never say never again and the unreleased Bond No time to die.
5:14 Modern women who talk about "the patriarchy" should watch this and reassess.
I agree. Best Bond 007 ever!
This is my absolute favorite series currently on youtube (maybe seconded only to Watcher's Puppet History). Keep 'em coming!
YT going overboard with ads interrupting vids, they must be hurting. FOUR in a 10 minute vid is ridiculous.
Quantum of solace is 106 min
Dr no is 109 min
Goldfinger is 110 min
RIP Sean.
Connery never vent in America to shot Goldfinger.
Movie Magic.
My favourite Bond flick. The height of cool.
The best Bond theme song is Nobody Does It Better.
"A touch dated"? That is the whole point of watching it.
For Russia with Love is the best bond film ever!!!
It's great movie.
"You won't be needing this!!! Old man...."

I totally agree
EON was thinking of changing Pussy Galore’s name, but they arranged a photo of Honor Blackman with Prince Philip, on the condition that the publication use the caption “Pussy and the Prince.” When no one blinked, they stuck with Fleming’s original name.
0:44 - 0:49 On a 24 hour loop lol
Can’t be many of us men who didn’t feel a slight sense of dread at the laser table scene, in the book it was a circular saw which would have been awful if they had used it in the movie.
The Corgi diecast model of the DB5 was a favourite of mine as a kid and most of us had one although the figure who sat in the passenger seat didn’t last long.
Corgi Classics still sell the James Bond cars including the Aston Martin DB5.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉
How to forget when Goldfinger said "It's Goldfinger time" and goldfingered all over the place
Clásica 🎥 De James Bond, con el gran actor británico Sean Connery, saludos desde Santiago De Chile gringos. 💪 💪 💪 💪
GOLD FEENGAAAA🎶
An undercover agent driving an Aston Martin?? But the best Bond ever in the 60s. Gave GB together with the Beatles colour again. Great times!
