Atlantic Coast in a Bonanza - Flagler to Charleston

  • It's a beautiful spring day in the southeast, and we are flying from Flagler, FL (just north of Daytona) to Charleston, SC, on our way home from spring break. Along the way there are nice views of the coast line, including St. Augustine and Hilton Head. A beautiful flight in our Beech over the beach!
    A few things that made this flight special were a departure controller who send us all over eastern Florida, an arrival ATIS in Charleston with a seemingly endless list of stuff that was broken or closed, and an empty GoPro battery seconds before touch down, I'm afraid. Still, I hope the nice views up to that point make up for it.
    Enjoy!

    I have always loved Flagler and have often said if I ever retire that's where I'd live. I've lived in Key West, Jacksonville Beach and Miami. Flager is such a nice small community. Beautiful video as always!

      I can see why you like Flagler. We have good friends there, and we have visited a number of times. Nice, quiet place.

      Thank you, Steve. Yes, it takes time to do all that, but I'm very glad to hear it helps.
      I'll have ideas for a few more videos this year - so stay tuned.

      Thanks, Bill. I just came back again from Florida and enjoyed the view along the east coast on a few flights down there. Certainly more scenic than farmland here in the Midwest. :-)

      Martin Pauly I live right near KJZI, where you opted not to land. I am surprised self-serf @ KJZI was more expensive than. @ KCHS. I have flown many hrs both in the Midwest as well as near CHS ... still prefer the coast 😀

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 лет назад

      The fuel price was the reason I went to KCHS on this trip; Executive (KJZI) would have been a tad bit closer to our destination. A rare example of a GA airport being more expensive than the main airport with airline service.

    Nice video! How long is that ride from Flagler to St Augustine? I fly into SGJ 18-20 times a year and I've been thinking about bringing a bike with me..

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 лет назад

      That ride took the better part of a day. It's not terribly far, but stopping at a couple of bars along the way took a toll... I was pleasantly surprised by how easy and safe the ride was, mostly on a dedicated bike lane/trail.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, you are right, Frank. The recording on that camera was suffering from lighting conditions that day - extremely bright outside, not bright at all inside. The new version of Final Cut Pro (X) that I switched to just recently no longer has the simple "gamma" adjustment but a more complex color correction effect. Looks like I need to study up on its use a little more. :)

    • @BaronPilot

      I still prefer FCP 7 until I commit to 4K. But that's the "old school" in me :-)

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 лет назад

      I delayed the transition from FCP to FCPX for a long time, too - just switched about a year ago. Video editing is only a hobby for me, and I was worried about the learning curve that comes with such a transition. In the end, the old FCP had become so unstable on my Mac (with OS X evolving) that I saw no choice but to make the jump. Today I am happy that I did the upgrade - while there are a few things that I think were easier in the old FCP Studio, for the most part my experience with FCP X has been positive, in terms of how fluid and responsive the system is and how some things have gotten much easier.

    Hi, Martin. Thanks for all your great videos. I fly an A36 also, and am wondering what app do you use on your iPad? Thanks!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 лет назад

      Hi John. Thanks for the kind feedback. The app I use is called WingX Pro, from Hilton Software. I guess it's very similar to ForeFlight and some other popular apps, it just happens to be the one I've been using ever since I started bringing my iPad into the cockpit.
      Regards, Martin

    Great video as always! What were the landing fees, costs, ect for using Signature at Charleston Int?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 лет назад

      Jos, I don't think there was a landing fee. I bought fuel - cheaper per gallon than Charleston Executive - and there may have been a parking fee for our two-night stay, but it wasn't much.

    • @josbren8943
      @josbren8943 7 лет назад

      Martin Pauly, thanks for the info. Do you have any desire to fly into kdca? I have been researching how to meet the requirements and I can assist with some of the more difficult ones if you are interested?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  7 лет назад

      Jos, flying into DCA would be a wonderful experience. I'm sure it's not easy, nor cheap. Is it even possible for a small Part 91 operator to go there? I have looked at the NBAA information about DCA, which seems to be geared more towards larger flight departments, not so much pilots of single engine piston airplanes.

    Radio seems to be picking up noise from the magnetos?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  6 лет назад +1

      Hi sosco22, yes that's exactly what was happening. My ignition harness was frayed in some places and was radiating energy from the magnetos into the radio system.
      At my last annual, the ignition harness was replaced, and the radio has been much, much better since then. You can hear that in my newer videos, like the ones in Atlanta or the "Return to O'Hare".

      Eric, runway 21 was closed that day, per the NOTAMs. If you go back to the ATIS broadcast, roughly at 19:28 in the video, you'll see the closure being mentioned.

    I think the controller wanted you to land half way down the runway to expedite clearing the runway.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 лет назад

      Joe, had that been his intention, the correct phraseology would have been "N70TB, make long landing". He only told me to plan to exit at Taxiway Foxtrot, which is towards the end.
      I did land long - probably 3000 feet in - and then he told me to go to the end of the runway.
      Regards, Martin

    • @joecritch143
      @joecritch143 5 лет назад

      Ok i didn't see that you had landed 3000 ft down the runway due to your battery dying. No biggie. Awesome videos Martin, really informative and entertaining.
