When I lived in Britain 20 years ago the bins were picked up solely by the metal bar they all have on the front. No side-crushing happened. These are more amusing though...
A lot of the damage done to the cart is due to the gripper style. Should be universal grip. Also, if the driver is not dead on the claws eventually rip through cart. Don't know how many customers are served per route. Generally 800-1500 homes 8-10 hour day. So fatigue can catch up to driver surely. Great video.

If cart is broken I would just get out of truck and load on top of grabber and dump it in the truck (if garbage obviously) as they just get stuck on the grabber for ages and also is dangerous - see bottle go flying which could have hit that kid at 5:47

I’m glad the trash company in my city has their shit together. They have all sturdy bins, and very specialized grabbers that perfectly conform to their bins.
@Swampy Is there a speed control for the jaws? If not then its poorly designed. If so in what situation would you use the ability to close quickly? The jaws are slamming into the bin with such pressure that it might be good for the first few years, but after a while the plastic is fatigued and fails.
Im pretty sure the whole point of the video is that they’re all broken which is why they crumple like that Ive never seen a bent plastic trash can in all my years because they were all in on piece edit: ok it seems like this is the same truck in the same town so I think the problem is with that specific truck not the design of the grabber
Jhone Glober Yup judge a whole country by one broken piece of machinery in one town Ive never seen those trucks do that so this is clearly a rare thing or else they wouldnt be everywhere In fact Its 7am and I can hear our garbage truck making its way around the neighborhood while its 12 degrees outside where no one would want to work If you want go ahead and be inefficient by using people instead of finding ways to advance as a species then go ahead but when you're ready to come into the first world we'll be waiting
In Australia, where i live, we have 240 litre injection molded plastic garbage bins - and no that's not a misspelling, that's how litre is spelled in Australia - and I have seen one bin fall into a garbage truck hopper. The operator didn't bother trying to get the bin out, the compactor mechanism took four passes at eating the bin but it eventually ate the whole bin. The hardest part for the truck to eat was the reinforced bin lip which was molded to have additional reinforcing on it. But the garbage truck eventually ate the whole thing. There were lots of crunching and snapping noises of plastic being snapped apart as the compactor crushed the bin. Apparently if a bin falls into a garbage truck they just let the truck eat it, they don't even try to rescue it out of it. You will usually receive a new bin, if not, you should contact your local council and they will supply a new bin.
They should just attach a large bin to the back of the truck so when they get a bin that is broken, they can load the stuff from one bin to the other bin that is attached to the back of the truck.
I live in unincorporated Bexar County where all waste collection is by private haulers and competition is quite aggressive. All of them still use rear load trucks with 3 man crews. Much better than a stupid ass arm tossing all the trash around.
@@firebirdude2 We usually get a new one if it is damaged or in my case someone stole? it, but maybe it went into the truck. But who would want a smelly garbage bin.
@Virginia Refuse Trucks. In the UK you get 1 of each free from the Council :- Grey = Non Recyclables, Blue = Tins & Bottles (both Glass & Plastic), Green = all Garden Rubbish - (you have to pay $30 a year to have that emptied), & a 1 cu yd re-enforced Brown Sack for Paper & Board. The reason why such cans don't get replaced, is because this garbage service, like the city of San Diego environmental services, asks you to pay $20 to replace it. And most people with broken cans say "no" because they can just live with it. Also, does anyone else notice that all of these are the same cans, in the same neighborhood, being emptied by the same truck and driver?
So? It's not like everyone needs to replace their barrel every month lol. Some places charge for the gas & man power to deliver the can, assembly, removal etc. And some residents (in general, not just LA) can go a long time before the container fails. Eventually the driver will put it out of service or throw the whole thing away, and then you'd have to get a new can in order to resume service.
Impossibly foolish design of the picker claw and lifting unit! Engineer who constructed it should be stuffed into a to be emptied can, or rightout take its place, to himself experience the ridiculous forces applied by this poor contraption... i bet every trash can is broken after maybe five cycles of going trough that ordeal. Stupid would be any citizen who paid for a new can, only to surely get it ruined a few weeks later again!
Hey, the mayor's nephew is driving this truck.l am amazed at how many people are blaming the bin manufacturers and not the garbage truck operators. It seems to me either the lifting mechanism is flawed or the drivers are not well trained. They would damage metal trash cans using this method.
