- With questions being asked about my near standard rotary powered rx8 drift car here is a tech feature on my trusty drift car with some new raw drift footage from a chasing 7 drift day at Crail raceway . we ask the question, Can you drift an rx8
Please hit up that subscribe button
please comment let me know if you like, or think it was crap
I don’t see how everyone hates the rx8 body it looks beautiful
Honestly think the rx8 is one of the best looking cars around I will do more with the 8 chassis some day all my development time is into my Silvia at the moment
Holliday i get compliments on my all the time
They're really cheap too
The RX8 is on of the most beautiful cars
Nearly 15 years later and it still looks like a modern vehicle
I've been wondering about drifting an RX-8 and everyone keeps saying its a bad idea, but on paper it looks like a great platform - especially given the price of the cars. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video, so much useful information packed in and you answered all of my questions!
Glad to have been a help. The rx8 is an awesome drift car 👌
Honestly you deserve more subs, awsome video, keep it up👊
bbullock41617 thanks appreciate it 👍 I'll get more videos up soon
Don't need the air pump. It allows the cat to warm up quicker during cold start. Only runs for a few min upon startup
You don't need the cat either it kills the engine faster.
I have a 2004 rx8 black. I upgraded ls1 coil packs, plugs and wires, AEM cold air intake, HKS hipermax max iv gt coilovers almost stiff as possible thinking about upgrading the springs, mazdaspeed front and rear strut tower bar, Cobb tune for 12,500 rpm- 12,800 rpm red line and little more power, with a 2nd tune for a eco mode witch gets me about 19city/28highway, Stiffer rear subframe bushings for the hopping during low-end torque. I custom welded a 3" straight pipe exhaust from manifold all the way back. My friend custom made a wooden pistol grip shifter out of cherrywood. 30mm wheelspacers rx8 stock 18"s in front with rx8 automatic transmission 16"s in the rear... This is everything I did for fun on and off the track
That’s quite a machine man have you any pictures, videos of the car fire them to my Facebook pm, search pro307
This isnt my account, but id like to know a little more about what you did to your car. Find me on Facebook. search- Mark Peloso
Dude. how do you only have 600+ subs?! Awesome video!! I found an RX8 nearby already on coilovers and wheels that I'm definitely going to try to pick up now!
thank you, the rx8 is such a great car just remember to pre mix with the fuel and give it a good thrash now and again
@@Pro307 Definitely. I've had great luck doing 1oz of premix per gallon. If I can't get idemetsu I've have good luck with Valvoline universal 2 stroke oil.
Thanks for recommending this video to me today at speedfest. Great watch. Really like your channel and it would be great to see some more videos on the S14.5
+Calum Thomson more to come in the next few weeks !!
rx8 are designed to handle !!
Yea great chassis 👍
looks like fun
I felt this moment in my soul lol 12:23
Let's talk about body work *clunk* let's not talk about body work lol 😂😂😂 made a subscriber out of me
Thank you, I really enjoyed filming this, thank you very much for subscribing 👌🔥🔥
dude you need a harness bar! leaving it at that angle will break your back in a real crash! pls read up about it in the near future
Good video, awesome accent!!! Pro Tip - save up for a 1JZ/2JZ ---- (RX8 1JZ owner)
AMYAS Seek Truth thanks, bet a 1jz in the rx8 is just mega !!!!
Genuinely funny, movie quotes made me sub 👍😂
+Billy Fethers thanks really enjoyed making this one 👍
Next time I see yah, have some stickers for me!! I will stick em on my bike. Or the Camaro!! Great vid!!!
Blackopbobbers no problem man and I'll get my tattoo booked !!
Great video stuart ! Funny outtakes at the end 😂👌 he rally drives ..... into the the muddy field 😂🤘
+SMT MOTORSPORT thanks man glad you enjoyed it
Teach us oh great one - our RX8 gets delivered today.
Love the rx8 chassie actually building another at the moment
Tf do you only have 600 subs for? Bro, get on Snapchat maps, add tons of people, tell them to all add you. You’re a wholesome guy!
Thanks for the comment, I can only hope if I create quality content the views will come, I think more rx8 content would help
Bolt on parts do nothing for a rotary, the air pump is only there to pump air into the cat to prevent damage to the catalytic converter because those cars are so prone to flooding. All that said i love my RX8
Just remove the cat :D weight reduction, better performance and nice pops 'n bangs
Good video mate, funny and informative!
Thank you, it was so fun to make
Sounds like this car, does the job
I enjoyed this bro. Thanks :)
Thanks 👍👍
i was going to sub but i notice this was your last rx8 content :(
Your absolutely right my rx8 content dropped off a cliff 😂, I intend to do another one but I can’t guarantee when! Possibly when I finish my pro build
@@Pro307 i have been wanting a rx8 lately and there isnt much content on this chassis. so when i found your vid i got excited but no more content :(
trying to add a rx8 to the stable along side my other shitboxes lol
your video style is dope and unique though man !
ur pretty on point tho underdog pro
Epic vid dude well done, I subscribed. just got my 3rd rx8 and got it for $1000nzd just so I can gut it out and use it for a drifter 👨🔧 stage ported, six speed 2005.
Thank you very much, well done on getting the rx8 hope you get some good seat time in it👌
@@Pro307 thanks man I've had some mad times in my rx8s but they're not for everyone. Your vids really are proper so much respect to ya and if ya ever In nz and need anything than hit me up.
Hey Project 307, nice video. and thanks for the screenshot of our website in there. I assume your using Idemitsu Premix in you RX-8. Your missfire may be coil packs if your running cheap ones there will be your problem.
The electrics on these engines are pretty good. but your limp mode issue could be a faulty Oil Metering Pump Sensor.
Get in touch and we will be happy to try and help.
Essex Rotary thank you really sry I haven't asked for permission to use it I need to be more careful with what I use in videos I should have given you guys a shout out just wanted to add some kinda proof to my claim sure it was an old racing beat article i ready the cost of running two cars means I'm focusing on my silvia but when I get back to the rx8 I'll give you guys a phone 👍
Project 307 cool, we actually drift one ourselves and have some prototype lock mods in testing. Please head over and check out our channel
ive got the 190 and would like to turn it into a drift car, set the build up to work on keeping the engine cool so if i decide to later on i can use forced induction and not kill the engine
Hey! I’ve been told the 190 are the better engine to turbo charge the water temp gauges are a bit crap as standard on the rx8’s an aftermarket gauge would be a good idea for keeping on top of water temp I’d be interested in knowing how you get on with drifting the 190 not sure how it would compare to the 230 thanks for the comment 👌
Great video, hope the channel takes off!
Thank you, appreciate your feedback ill try and keep adding interesting stuff build up my content
I was looking for examples of drifting RX8's and didnt expect to come across a video of Scottish lad give a decent breakdown of drifting one! haha. Does it get lost in the back corner before the wall when you're chasing other cars that are flat out? I'm pretty sure this problem on my motor was from rubbish alignment/tyres though.
Some of my earlier footage I’m using right crap back tyres but with a good alignment and a set of budget 225 back tyres, it has about the same speed as an e36. If you hold it flat along the wall you will get a good full outer line at driftland. I like your 180 it’s nice in red 👌
@@Pro307 Nice cheers! Did my time in an mx5 learning so going back to less power shouldnt be too much of an issue haha. Cheers!
Only be thing will put in limp mode and that’s the OMP
Yea the story is I ended up giving the motor to a local guy who had a try at a drift rx8 he ended up changing the oil metering pump and that cured the limp mode issue. I often wonder if would be better doing away with the pump altogether and just using a heavier pre mix
Really nice drift car mate
Thank you 👌
Congratulations for this clip, is awesome..
I have a question for u.
What is the difference between turn off completly the DTC and remove the relais like you do?
And more important, in your opinion, can i drift my 8 without welding the lsd but simple installing a 2 way lsd?
Thanks and sorry for my english
You have to be very careful with what you disconnect with the canbus everything is linked if you remove the wrong fuse the dash switches off. Disconnecting one of the sensors on the brakes removes the abs without effecting other systems and disconnecting the little box between the back seats removes the traction control thanks for the comment 👌
I think the rx8 didn’t get much love is because it didn’t live up to a FD rx7 like the MR-S with the SW20 Turbo. The new supra seems to follow the same path.
Do you think if it was turbo charged it would of been upto the hype or would an rx8 never be as good as a 7?
wheelbase is long that's why. can shorten the body innit. shell drift then :P
can you please relate more about that air pump?thanks!!
+cristyn liviu the smog secondary air injection pump is a small electric pump connected to a steal pipe that connects to the exhaust manifold, now I'm not expert but it injects a small amount of air into the manifold to help with exhaust emissions, don't remove it if you have a catalytic converter, don't think it really makes much of a performance difference removing it racing beat do a blanking plate I just made one out of a bit of steal
i am also making an rx for drift and i just wanted to know if there is a little gain there as well, thank you so much
Do have any vids on how you adjusted the castor out on your Rx8 i know this was 5years ago but be cool if you still have any links or info..
Hey, so don’t have any footage of that, do plan on doing another rx8 and will do a full series but that’s a future project. So at the back of the lower arm there is a large bolt that holds the arm to the subframe. The washer on the bolt is cam shaped and if you loosen the bolt and turn it this pushes the arm forward and adds castor. If I remember right the front bolt can adjust camber. Just be carful myn was very tight and I gave myself a serious smack to the face trying to loosen it 😅 thanks for leaving a comment 👌
@@Pro307 My man cheers dude for the info,,Im actually building a burnout car Rx8 its here on my channel ,Im getting into the front steering to get more lock hopefully in the nextweek ,but thats massive cheers for the info bruh my man,,,
@@Pro307 brother you were bang on done what you said, and massive, just got one em camber bolts like un movable atm but will try get it to budge maybe tomorrow,,but cheers for the info
Very tight I double spannered myn, slipped off and punched my self in the face doing them 😂 be carful don’t do that 😂
@@Pro307 ohyea nah it was actually tryna make the adjustment i had to use a wind up jack to get it to barely move took3days lol got it lined up then locked it into place or else it just wound back to its original position lol but all sorted we just shortening the hub steering knuckles now then away laughing ahaha
One name.... Mad Mike :)
Yea he’s basically the technical authority on anything rotary 👌👌
Hello buddy! Is that rx8 with stock engine and transmission?
if yes, is that 1st part about this car (it says episode 2?)
if yes, subscribed!!
I want to learn more about rx8 drift car, shortly, yes or no? with stock wankel engine for start, please.
Many thanks, Alex, East Kent, UK.
Alex Lebedev hey man thanks for the comment, this is stock engine stock gearbox and stock clutch believe it or not !!! I don't have another episode on the rx8 although I do have some go pro footage on my channel
You've said right in video, it's not that many videos around about rx8 in style you do. I like it! Thanks for nice startup with some tips and comments about unknown engine and stuff around.
I would be very interested to learn more, how I can contact you with some questions (no worries, only about drift & rx8 :) ) outside of RUclips or that's fine just to post them here?
C'mon, share with your experience sir :)
Nice videos. Just sold my silvia and currently thinking about getting an RX8.
Can you kindly provide your exact exhaust brand/specs from the headers and back? lots of different ebay versions. Thanks!
Hey thanks for the comment if I remember right it was a toyo brand cat back system with a decat pipe “test pipe” I wouldn’t recommend a cheap manifold the racing beat manifold is really good and will seal a lot better on the engine, my cheaper one leaked a bit, if you can track down a second hand one that would be perfect. I liked the system the 13b idles really quiet and the system dosnt drown to much 👌
add some smooth music to videos. love ya!
air pump is only to help catalyc on cold motor
Dawid David thanks man so much tech put in to try and make the car legal for emissions, makes you wonder if they will ever manage to make another rotary that will conform to more and more strict emissions rules
"This my wankle" :) like, subscribe and ring the bell!!!
Hi is it true that, if you trying to add more lock it will upset the electric steering rack?
And on that note why the electric steering not suitable for drift?
Also how bad is the standard lsd locking up the rear wheels?
thank you.
I didn’t find what I did to the lock upset the electric steering but I did fire on a lot of caster to help get some self steer. Electric steering will work for drifting it just limits driver feedback and I found it wouldn’t self centre as well as a hydraulic setup, the standard diff will lock up, but it will open if you come off the power and makes the car really snappy I found welding the diff made a big difference
@@Pro307
thanks a lot buddy. i think you were right in the beginning of the video. this is a great car just not really for drifting.
Lot of effort for too little.
But honestly really great video
+bigupschase thank you, such a fun car to drive always had a laugh driving it 👍
I've been having a look at the RX8 because It doesn't look bad, it's cheap and although the RX7 is recommended for drifting it's way too expensive from the few i've seen (as are the old nissans and toyotas people recommend as 'cheap' classic drift cars). Are they very different cars? I see a lot of old 3 series recommended for drifting but I wonder if, being BMW they'll be very expensive for replacement parts. I wouldn't mind a cheap MX5 as it seems fun although it's a bit small and also convertible so more dangerous if you roll / crash. What kind of things would you recommend.
Made In Machines BMW parts second hand are really easy gotten hold of any e36 BMW/ compact will be a good start they are usually the bat budget car, yea mx5 or lexis is200 also an idea to check out rx8 is quite expensive to make work well as a drifter
Thanks very much for the tips. Does the same apply to the E46 or E46 M3s for cheap easily available parts? I do quite like the look of them. Is the Mx5 easy to drift stock or does it lack power? Which model of the IS200 would be good to check out?
+Made In Machines for the lexis a 2.0l 150 go model will drift set of Suspencion and 60/70 psi in the back tyres any BMW really 1.9, 2.0l 2.5 is a smoke machine, mx5 is under powered but you can make up for this with setup and tyre pressures best to buy someone else's project or a second hand drift car let someone else spend the money and time
I only want a cheap drift car that I don't mind wrecking. Something £1000-3000 maximum
The RX-8 will be great as a autox or a lapping car but for a drift car i just find you can get better cars for the money. If you're from N. America a sn95 mustang with a v8 would be a much better base in my opinion. But if you want a car to do it all and drift here and their (not actual drift missile) then yeah the rx8 would be pretty bang on
great video man! I just bought an rx8 for 900 quid and am planning to take it to driftland myself as I'm from round here. some very helpful stuff here! do you attend often? wouldn't mind stealing some tips ;)
also good to see you failing it gives me hope 😅
Think it's important to show fail the filming was taken over three years of using the car one year I did 3 or four drift day in a row without fault all my technique I have learned is thanks to my rx8 when I jump in my silvia it's easy to drive, I'm always down to driftland anything I can help with just give me a shout 👍
Project 307 hopefully see you there in the next couple months then! how big a job was extending that arm to get more angle?
57veggie was an arse of a job tbh they broke one time my friend was out he went threw a fence at Crail I cut about 20mm out the arm and ground the ends to a ver and stick welded, I'd recommend a professional welder if your not one yourself keep acumen angle the same
What are the smallest wheels you can put in the back? Can you show some details of the hydrobrake? I bought 192 and want to try drifting it stock :/ NotApro
+Evlo 16" I think is the smallest you'll get on the back over the brakes you can use a 205 x 40 tyre and it's should drive fine @lucky307 on Facebook if you send me a pm I can do a diagram for you if that would help
@@Pro307 i run 15s all the way around
Station 189 wow I’d have never thought 15” would have went over the front brakes that’s cool wouldn’t mind seeing your car on 15” do you have an Instagram link?
Thanks for the info, I was wondering what the bolt pattern was :) if the Nissan wheels both up that also means that the wheels from A 1980 Dodge diplomat fit that car also. The offset and size of the Dodge diplomat standard wheels are awesome for drifting and cheap :)
5 x 114.3 with a 40 offset is the Nissan standard 240sx wheel does that tie in with your dodge wheels ? Thanks for the comments 👍
Honestly thinking of buying a rx8 instead of a gs300 they are expensive. Depending on mileage and who knows what they have.
Rx8 are cheap for a reason. A lot of people have ruined their engines. They are high maintenance
so how long that car last? im fancy one as missile
A real long time, think I got about two years of solid drifting out of it before there was an oil metering problem. The electronics are a pain in the ass but the engine likes a good kicking. Engine lacks serious torque for drifting. Tough car to drift but rewarding
One question: i've heard its possible to put the NA/NB miata steering rack in the RX8 which should fix your complaints on the steering... Potentially viable swap?
Also swapping to the 5spd might be viable as it sheds quite a bit a weight...
I think you can go a lot lighter Is some areas the wiring alone is very heavy in the car yea 5 speed is lighter and I have herd of guys using the 5speed box, I’ve herd a lot of people using a e36 steering rack or a rx7 rack retrofitted, I think the wise fab lock kit uses the bmw rack and if you use an electric power steering pump would be great!
I’m not sure if the miata rack would be a bolt in solution but might also be an option
Nice channel bud 👍🏻
SMT MOTORSPORT thank you really appreciate your feedback I'll have some new episodes in the next few weeks
Project 307 you should do some videos of u fixing or building the rx8 car that helps with subs 👍🏻 and once ur over 100 subs it helps so keep it up bud and if ur up Aberdeen way give me a shout! 🤘
SMT MOTORSPORT o your a local lad that's awesome yea defiantly you done frail driftland yet ? Haven't had time to look through your videos but I will I'll be moving onto my pro silvia next so will do some films about that thanks for the advice
Project 307 yeah live in turriff so bit away from drift land and kinda new to drifting as I have always done rallying but fancy a wee change! First event is next month on the 16th small venue close to home but i will be at driftland soon 👍🏻 find me on faceballs Just look up SMT motorsport and we can meet up some time 😊
I mean, you gotta do something with the engine, more power man
I’d love to pull more power out the engine there’s a company doing a peripheral port 270 hp na but it’s all money ! Maybe a turbo or supercharger kit or even an fd engine transplant, maybe some day !! Thanks for the comment
@@Pro307 I'd recommend a supercharger a turbo will blow your seals faster.
I’d love a super charger always fancied one although I think the turbo is the cheaper option, end of 2020 I’ll be starting a new rx8 project I think
What upgrades would you do if you were to make an rx8 your comp car
I’d change the steering rack to a hydraulic rack with a electric pump I’d run better coil packs and a bridge port engine, if I had big budget id go a new turbo engine from racing beat
whats the height and width on the wheels i dont think i caught it? and i like the amount of lock it gives you it looks like its enough for big entries and save you from spinning.
em2attic the front wheels are an 18" x 9.5 wide with an et of +30 I've used a 30 mm spacer to take the et to 0 the lock is really good you can it gets you out of trouble if you go to sideways although the week does offer to take on the lower arm a bit
Project 307 nice nice glad somebody is finally doing the ol bastard rx8 justice hahaha! how much camber do you think youre running up front with that setup? i wish the lower control arms were steel instead of cast aluminum to be able to extend them for better clearence.
em2attic thanks yea I know exactly what you mean if the lower arms were steal you could cut them up for more clearance and extend, I've never really checked the camber I've just adjusted the standard adjuster for max caster camber have horrible - camber when the wheels are straight affecting the braking a bit
Poor rx8
cenmike82 you could say that for...well, every rx8
What track is that 🤔 or were is that the event looks good
A lot of the filming is at driftland but also crail raceway and Alford speed fest all in scotland
I’m thinking for my first drift car to be a RX8 do you think it’s a good choice
I have a serious soft spot for the rx8 it’s a great car and my biggest regret is not building a rx8 chassis for my pro car, if you find a good one your willing to put in the time and hardship of setting one up to drift it’s a great and different car you will stand out but it’s not the easiest car to learn in and it’s expensive to modify. My advice is if your really committed to an rx8 go for it if you want a beginner drift car that’s more cost effective try a bmw or a Lexus is200 I’m @pro307 on Facebook and Instagram if there’s any further questions I can help with thanks for the message 👌
Pro 307 thanks for giving me the answer I know the RX8 isn’t a good starter drift car I heard about that but it is a good looking car thanks again
Pro 307 thanks for the other ideas for first drift car
I disagree quite strongly with some of your comments , I had an rx8 back in the day and it was an excellent drift car
What points in particular do you disagree with ? Although I do point out some poor points and points that could use with being improved, I loved drifting my rx8 it never let me down
Well firstly I would say it had perfectly balanced weight distribution, highly predictable characteristics mid skid , massively sympathetic to novice drivers . Drift machine 100% . Of course More power would of been welcome in my particular vehicle but I think you would agree you can never have to much power , am I right?
the answer is yes.
He’ll yes 💪💪💪
How does that harness mounting position pass tech?
Ryan H Always passed no problem
Here in the states the maximum allowed angle for safe harness mounting is somewhere in the 0-20 degree range from the horizontal plane where the harness goes through the seats... Much more angle than that, similar to yours, has been known to cause injury in crashes
Ryan H your absolutely right, my Competition car has a harness bar at the back giving the correct angle, to get on track with the rx8 you don’t need a tech inspection
190hp or 231hp
231hp
Don't RX8's come with limited slip diffs ?
Blue motion your absolutely right they do have a factory lsd but it's not like a 2 way diff it's just a road lsd and offers to open up when drifting I find if you weld it make it a spool diff it drifts a lot more consistent
Do you still have the seats?
Chavorris Orr I don’t no sorry
what front wheels are those on ur 8?
+Aron Grangruth those are Rota gr6 18" x 9.5 et 30 really cool wheel
Aron Grangruth ive got 18×10.5 +22 offset on mine
Why make 15 minutes video when you already proved in the first 30 seconds that an RX8 can drift :)
I won’t lie, you got me there ;)
